I've managed to enjoy Nicholas Meyers' <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GSCRT8?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000GSCRT8">The Seven Percent Solution</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B000GSCRT8" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /> and both <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GLS2L2?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000GLS2L2">The Revenge of Moriarty</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B000GLS2L2" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0425050939?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0425050939">Return Of Moriarty</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0425050939" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /> by John Gardner, but that's about the extent of it.<br /><br />I was just informed of a set of stories first released in 2003 that has recently been revised and expanded. I refer to <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1846855047?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1846855047">The Singular Adventures of Mr Sherlock Holmes</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1846855047" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /> by Alan Stockwell. While the titles of the (oh-so-Canonical number of 17) stories can be a little off-putting - "The Sulky Pony," "The Bride of the Moon," and "The Blue Silk Underwear" to name a few - evidently, the plots themselves are quite workmanlike in their construct.<br /><br />From <a href="http://www.mrsherlockholmes.co.uk/">Mr. Stockwell's Web site</a>, I found two very worthwhile recommendations. One from David Stuart Davies: "What makes the tales so enjoyable is the ingenuity of the plots: they are engagingly inventive."<br /><br />And another from Roger Johnson, one of our regular readers and commenters, noted "The style is a simulacrum of Dr Watson’s, and Mr Stockwell clearly knows his period and his Canon."<br /><br />While I can't comment on having read the stories myself, I'm more inclined to purchase this pastiche than any other.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1846855047?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1846855047" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger2/5683/1768/320/Singular.0.jpg" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" /></a>

"By Special License..." [COPP]

I know there are a number of Sherlockians out there with vanity plates (personalized license plates for automobiles). As a matter of fact, I seem to recall someone about 10 years go putting together a database of Sherlockian vanity plates. Does anyone know if it still exists?<br /><br />Well, I thought it might be interesting if we created our own right here. I found a <a href="http://www.acme.com/licensemaker/">License Plate Generator</a> that allows you to see your plates as they would appear, should you choose to spend the extra cash on them.<br /><br />I'm thinking that I might like to have one, but in my state, there are restrictions against beginning the plate with a numeral. He was a Doctor of Medicine, for goodness sake! But while he was intelligent in his own right, when compared with Sherlock Holmes, he naturally fades a bit - and his own humility plays it down as well. It doesn't help when Holmes tells him, "you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light." [HOUN]<br /> <br /> If any mere mortal pairs himself up with Sherlock Holmes, there's bound to be an element of perceived stupidity about the individual. But that doesn't mean that one is a knucklehead. And when one has seen war service and experienced women "over three separate continents," we struggle to think how a journalist could possibly call him "boring."<br /> <br /> Yes, Gene Weingarten doens't understand Dr. Watson. Connoisseurs of Sherlockian sculpture have another city to visit if they care to indulge their artistic preferences. To give you a measure of the man honored that evening, here's one of Al's remarks:<br /> <span class="bodystory"></span><br /> <blockquote> <span class="bodystory">"As I look out at you and see your warm faces," Rosenblatt said,"I also see a sea of shoulders. And I have no illusions — you have carried me on your shoulders."</span></blockquote> <span class="bodystory">You get the same self-deprecating, humble and honest style when you speak with him personally as well.<br /> <br /> For a number of years, Al has served as the BSI's poet laureate, commemorating the previous year and the BSI Weekend in verse, presented at the annual <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/bsiweekend/schedule.html">BSI Cocktail Reception</a>. As someone who has dabbled in doggerel, it's one of the highlights of the Weekend for me. Subscribers to <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/itemsforsale.html">The Baker Street Journal</a> are treated to his witty writing in the Spring issue.<br /> <br /> In recent years, Al's daughter Betsy has joined him at the podium to give a familial assist on the reading (she also pulls a semi all-nighter to craft the verse with her dad the night before). Betsy has followed her father's footsteps in the law as well as in the Sherlockian movement. In coverage of the retirement dinner in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Poughkeepsie Journal</span>, Betsy mentioned that, when she visits her parents at home, she enjoys discussing legal points with her father:</span><span class="bodystory"></span><br /> <blockquote> <span class="bodystory">"I don't always reach a conclusion," she said, "but talking to Dad about the law sure opens the breathing passages. "Engage a Special." [FINA]

If you haven't discovered the joys of podcasts yet, you should get on the ball. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcast">Podcasts</a> are audio files set up in a serialized format that you can listen to on the go with an mp3 player, or sitting at your computer. Despite the name, there's no requirement to own an iPod in order to listen to a podcast.<br /><br />Think of it as radio on demand - you can select what you want to listen to, and where you want to listen to it. You get customized updates sent right to your feedreader or music interface, such as <a href="http://www.apple.com/itunes/">iTunes</a>. Each week, he spends a few minutes giving an introduction to the series he is highlighting. Up until episode 68, he rarely repeated a subject. The Stanford Sherlock Holmes Project Continues

The stories included "A Scandal in Bohemia," The Speckled Band," <span style="font-style: italic;">The Hound of the Baskervilles</span>, and "The Final Problem."<br /> <br /> The Stanford project will continue in 2007 with twelve additional stories, released on a weekly basis: “The Empty House,” “Silver Blaze,” “The Musgrave Ritual,” “The Reigate Squires,” “The Greek Interpreter, ” “Charles Augustus Milverton,” “The Abbey Grange,” “The Second Stain,” “The Bruce-Partington Plans,” “ The Devil’s Foot,” “The Dying Detective,” and “His Last Bow.”<br /> <br /> Since the first round of Sherlock Holmes serials proved more popular than the Stanford staff anticipated (there were over 12,000 requests for free facsimiles to be mailed out), this time around, the cost for paper-based reproductions will cost $20 for the set of 12. Connecticut Yankee <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Gillette">William Gillette</a> played Sherlock Holmes for more than 35 years at the beginning of the twentienth century to great acclaim, but no film of his performance remains. Along with the meerschaum pipe and deerstalker hat, the Inverness is one of the classic accouterments that helps identify this Victorian era icon.<br /><br />In the November 5 issue of the <span style="font-style: italic;">New York Times</span>, the Money section has an article entitled <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/05/business/yourmoney/05goods.html?_r=1&ref=yourmoney&oref=slogin">Mist, Moors and a Better Rain Cape</a> concerning the ingenuity behind constructing a better Inverness for bagpipers. "Here Is a Quotation..." [WIST]

One of the benefits of being a Baker Street Irregular is the ability to "go everywhere, see everything and overhear everyone." As such, I generally find out about a variety of events, books and multimedia items of Sherlockian nature.<br /><br />Through the generosity of <a href="http://yalepress.yale.edu/yupbooks/qyd/fred.asp">Fred Shapiro</a> and his publishers at the Yale University Press, I recently received a copy of his new work <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0300107986?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0300107986">The Yale Book of Quotations</a>. As you no doubt can tell from each entry on this blog, I'm a fan of quotations. In fact, a reader sent me an email a few weeks back expressing admiration for my habit of using a Canonical quotation as the headline for each blog post.<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0300107986?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&creativeASIN=0300107986" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger2/5683/1768/320/YBQ.jpg" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" /></a><br />Shapiro's contribution to the area traditionally dominated by <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0316084603?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&amp;amp;amp;amp;camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0316084603">Bartlett's</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0316084603" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /> is that it is the first major quotation book to emphasize modern sources and the first quotation book of any sort to use state-of-the-art research methods to comprehensively collect famous quotations and to trace quotations to their accurate origins.<br /><br />But he also does Sherlockians a great service. There are 39 quotations attributed to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sir Arthur Conan Doyle</span>, largely from the Canon. We also hear from <span style="font-weight: bold;">Anthony Boucher</span>, one half of the Boucher-Green writing team for the Sherlock Holmes radio series in the 1940s. And the founder of the Baker Street Irregulars, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Christopher Morley</span>, makes an appearance with four quotes.<br /><br />Clever readers will also be able to enjoy quotations from members of the <a href="http://www.algonquinhotel.com/AboutUs/round_table.htm">Algonquin Round Table</a>, such as <span style="font-weight: bold;">Heywood Broun</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Edna Ferber</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">George F. Kaufman</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Robert E. Sherwood</span> and others like:<br /><ul><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Robert Benchley</span>: "It took me 15 years to discover I had no talent for writing, but I couldn't give it up because by that time I was too famous</li><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Alexander Woollcott</span>: "Germany was the cause of Hitler just as much as Chicago was the cause of the Chicago<span style="font-style: italic;"> Tribune</span>."<br /></li><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Dorothy Parker</span>: [<span style="font-style: italic;">Upon being challenged to use the word 'horticulture' in a sentence</span>] "You can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make her think."<br /></li></ul><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0300107986?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0300107986">The Yale Book of Quotations</a> contains literally thousands of other quotations which span from traditional historical and literary sources to more modern areas such as advertising slogans, radio and television catchphrases, proverbs, film lines and nursery rhymes. And Shapiro has gone the extra distance of clearing up improperly attributed quotes - some you didn't even know were wrong. It was Napoleon Bonaparte, not William Tecumseh Sherman who said "War is hell!"<br /><br /><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0300107986" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /><br />This is really a unique find and it's certainly easy for anyone to browse. In addition, there is a keyword index, in case you're looking for a certain quotation to fill a void, and there are plenty of annotations and cross-references that make this more than simply a reference book.

"Wiggins Has Just Been Up to Report..." [SIGN]

This is a little dated, but fun news, nonetheless. Tipped off by a post to the <a href="http://www.bcpl.net/%7Elmoskowi/hounds/hounds.html">Hounds of the Internet</a> about a horse at Churchill Downs called Wiggins, I did a little sleuthing.<br /><br />Churchill Downs Racing News had an entry on May 26, called <a href="http://www.churchilldowns.com/news/racing_news/racing_news_05262006.html">Wiggins Sets Sights on Stephen Foster</a> in which the Canonically named gelding was reported as winning by 2 1/2 lengths to take home $58,900. Not bad for a Baker Street Irregular.<br /><br />Even more interesting: Wiggins is the sire of Cartwright. Cartwright, of course, was "the little chap from the express office" who accompanied Holmes to the moor in <a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/houn-12.htm"><span style="font-style: italic;">The Hound of the Baskervilles</span></a>.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-style: italic;">"Cartwright had come down with me,"</span> [HOUN]<br /></div>

"Light a Cigar and Let Me Expound." [BOSC]

The October 25 edition of the New York Times contains <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/25/books/25grim.html?_r=1&oref=slogin">a book review</a> of Daniel Stashower's latest book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/052594981X?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=052594981X">The Beautiful Cigar Girl: Mary Rogers, Edgar Allan Poe, and the Invention of Murder</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=052594981X" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" />.<br /><br />The book centers around the murder of a very real Mary Rogers, a woman of striking good looks who was hired to stand behind the cigar counter to attract men. Poe became interested in teh mystery and assigned the fictional Auguste Dupin to the case.<br /><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/052594981X?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=052594981X" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger2/5683/1768/320/CigarGirl.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" /></a><br />It sounds as if Mary Rogers was the Paris Hilton of her day. Stashower writes: "she was the first woman in New York to be famous for being talked about," and quotes a contemporary newspaper article that noted "Her notoriety is unencumbered by position or achievement." Sounds like Paris Hilton to me.<br /><br />One excerpt from the book review:<br /><blockquote>"Mr. Stashower invests this high-wire act — a near disaster, as it turned out — with the same air of suspense as the murder investigation itself."<br /></blockquote><br />For those of you who may not be familiar with <a href="http://www.stashower.com/">Daniel Stashower</a>, he is a member of the Baker Street Irregulars, receiving his investiture "Thurston" in 2001. "A Case of Considerable Interest..." [BOSC]

As I understand it, the <a href="http://acdfriends.org/acdat35.htm">ACD@35</a> conference this past weekend was a remarkable success. I have heard very good things about the program, in particular about the caliber of speakers present.<br /><br />To keep the celebration going, the Toronto Public library has just announed a special exhibition that has been mounted. <a href="http://ve.torontopubliclibrary.ca/case_of_considerable_interest/index.html">A Case of Considerable Interest</a> will display items from from the Conan Doyle Collection, including Sherlock Holmes-related books, Doyle's other works, and a section on the Canadian connection.<br /><br />The exhibition runs until January 7, 2007. Once again, we have lost one of our own: Maureen Green Van der Flaes, BSI ("Kitty Winter") passed away yesterday, October 18, after suffering severe head injuries from a fall. Maureen was also a long-time member of the <a href="http://www.ash-nyc.com/">Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes</a>.<br /><br />As a Toronto-area Sherlockian, her husband, Edwin Van der Flaes, BSI ("Victor Trevor") has indicated that he doesn't want it to affect the <a href="http://www.acdfriends.org/acdat35.htm">ACD@35</a> weekend which is starting today.<br /><br />I'm sorry to say that I didn't know Maureen personally. Any recollections of her are welcome in the comment section below. "I Will Examine Your Symptoms..." [DYIN]

There have been a number of theories thrown around with regard to the mental health of Sherlock Holmes over the years. Those include such diagnoses as biopolar disorder, <a href="http://www.geocities.com/athens/acropolis/8950/holmes/autism.htm">autism</a>, <a href="http://www.geocities.com/sherlockiana/holmesian/add_yop.html">attention deficit hyperactivity disorder</a>, and most recently, Asperger's syndrome.<br /><br />I've previously blogged about Holmesian influence in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009WPM1Q?tag=thebakerstree-20&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=B0009WPM1Q&adid=0JM5DFGC4058WS44SHDZ&">House</a>. It should come as no surprise then, that in a recent episode (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0836216/">"Lines in the Sand"</a>), Wilson noted symptoms of Asperger's syndrome in an effort to explain House's quirks:<br /><blockquote style="font-style: italic;">"Asperger's syndrome is a mild and rare form of autism. It is typically characterized by difficulty establishing friendships and playing with peers, trouble accepting conventional social rules, and they dislike any change in setting or routine. "</blockquote><br />But one positive side to Asperger's syndrome is the degree of creativity which is afforded to many of its sufferers. "I Think That I Have Deserved Better..." [HOUN]

The <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13594096/">2006 Quill Awards</a> were awarded at a gala in New York City last night. Readers certainly did their part in voting for Les Klinger in the Mystery/Suspense/Thriller category. However, his monumental work, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&keywords=new%20annotated%20sherlock%20holmes&tag=thebakerstree-20&index=books&amp;amp;amp;linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325" style="font-style: italic;">The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important; font-style: italic;" width="1" />, was not the winner in the category last night.<br /><br />Still, it's wonderful to see a Sherlockian - one whom I am lucky to call a friend - in the same category as the competition. And there are plenty of books that I <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">don't</span> buy.<br /><br />Those who knew JBS personally remember a gregarious and generous man - generous with his time and with his collection. The fact that Shaw's collection was the basis for the <a href="http://special.lib.umn.edu/rare/holmes.phtml">Sherlock Holmes Collection at the University of Minnesota Libraries</a> certainly proves that.<br /><br />Personally, I never had the chance to meet Mr. Shaw. If there are any readers out there with a personal experience with the great Sherlockian collector John Bennett Shaw, a comment would be welcome.
