The seventh in the series of stories that make up <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>, "The Blue Carbuncle" is the sole Christmas story in the Sherlock Holmes canon.<br /><br />Watson sets the stage for us by opening the tale with this paragraph:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">"I had called upon my friend Sherlock Holmes upon the second morning after Christmas, with the intention of wishing him the compliments of the season. He was lounging upon the sofa in a purple dressing-gown, a pipe-rack within his reach upon the right, and a pile of crumpled morning papers, evidently newly studied, near at hand. Beside the couch was a wooden chair, and on the angle of the back hung a very seedy and disreputable hard felt hat, much the worse for wear, and cracked in several places. A lens and a forceps lying upon the seat of the chair suggested that the hat had been suspended in this manner for the purpose of examination."</blockquote>Until 2022, it had become something of an annual tradition at <i>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</i> to acknowledge December 27th with a favorite reading (after which it fell by the wayside for s bit). And so it is with the children of <a href="http://www.bakerstreetelementary.org/" target="_blank">Baker Street Elementary</a>.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It has now been 10 years since this Charles Schulz-inspired Sherlockian comic strip made its debut from the minds of Joe Fay, Rusty Mason, and Steve Mason. Here at <i>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</i>, we recognized the innocence and joy of Baker Street Elementary as a throwback to the Sunday comics of yore, and have featured this strip every other Sunday on this site for the past eight years (along with some related commentary).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Think of what a decade of Holmes and Watson together gave us: the two first met in early 1881 and their exploits included <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, <i>The Sign of Four</i>, the entire collection of <i>The Adventures</i> and <i>The Memoirs</i>, ending only with "death" of Sherlock Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls with Professor Moriarty.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Those tales meant we would encounter a clever female foil for Sherlock Holmes, a client with a severed digit, a scam targeted at a man with red hair, a snake as a murder weapon, short hair and a blue dress as a requirement for employment, a disappearing horse, a murderous pygmy, an travel-worn American set on vengeance, and a number of past acquaintances whose reappearance meant death.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">This was just the beginning of a 40-year journey. Will Baker Street Elementary have the same longevity? It's not that he was employing black magic or supernatural powers; he simply was skilled beyond the means of common folk of his time.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Their shock and surprise were evident, as they expressed their astonishment by comparing him to wizard. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Inspector Stanley Hopkins expressed belief that Holmes was a wizard, adding,</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I really do sometimes think that you have powers that are not human.” [ABBE]</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">When the Right Honorable Trelawney Hope discovered the lost document thanks to Holmes, he declared him “a wizard, a sorcerer!” [SECO]</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">James Dodd expressed surprise with Holmes's deductions: “Mr. Holmes, you are a wizard.” [BLAN]</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And Watson himself exclaimed “Holmes, you are a wizard,” when Holmes mentioned grey-tinted glasses. [RETI]</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But there were other realizations of Holmes's powers that didn't go quite as far as calling him a wizard. Sherlock Holmes himself had a strong sense of right and wrong.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And in many cases, that meant allowing a perpetrator to go free after solving the case. Was this code of honor meant to speak to the potential character of such individuals in the future, in order to allow them to change their ways? Or perhaps he thought their deeds were justifiable?  </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "The Blue Carbuncle," he flings the door open and allows James Ryder to escape, with a tinge of empathy:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">"I suppose that I am commuting a felony, but it is just possible that I am saving a soul. This fellow will not go wrong again; he is too terribly frightened. Send him to jail now, and you make him a jail-bird for life."</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But that term commuting a felony, was the preogative of the crown. In "The Mazarin Stone," he said he'd "compound a felony." And in "The Priory School," he said the Duke of Holdernesse "condoned a felony."</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The proper term was "misprision of felony," or failing to report knowledge of a felony to the appropriate authorities. Watson first meet, thanks to the introduction via Stamford, they seem an odd pair — like two circles of a Venn diagram that just barely overlap. And yet this combination is exactly what was necessary to bring the many adventures of Sherlock Holmes to the world. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Had they been more alike, we wouldn't have experienced the wonder and awe with which Watson treated some of their interactions. Nor would we have instances of Holmes's ultimate disappointment when he sent Watson in his place during certain cases.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">For instance, in "<b>The Solitary Cyclist</b>," Watson returns from his observation of the cyclist, which was done at a considerable distance:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Mr. Sherlock Holmes listened with attention to the long report which I was able to present to him that evening, but it did not elicit that word of curt praise which I had hoped for and should have valued. On the contrary, his austere face was even more severe than usual as he commented upon the things that I had done and the things that I had not.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Your hiding-place, my dear Watson, was very faulty... As it is you were some hundreds of yards away, and can tell me even less than Miss Smith... You really have done remarkably badly.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“What should I have done?” I cried, with some heat.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Gone to the nearest public-house. But we can't say Holmes wasn't prepared; he did so knowing that Watson didn't have the power of observation as him.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">He managed to outdo Watson on Watson's description of Josiah Amberley:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Left shoe wrinkled, right one smooth.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I did not observe that.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“No, you wouldn’t. I spotted his artificial limb. But proceed.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Watson was already disturbed at this kind of set-up in <b><i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i></b>. Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons.<br /><br />Of all of the quotes in the Canon, William Shakespeare was the most oft-quoted author. There is but one Shakespearean play that Holmes quotes twice: <i><a href="https://amzn.to/37GCVtA">Twelfth Night</a></i>. In <i>The Sign of the Four</i>, Holmes concludes, "All is well that ends well." This is from from Act IV, Scene 4. And in "The Empty House," Holmes states "'Journeys end in lovers meetings,' as the old play says," from Act II, Scene 3.<br /><br />The reason the date was chosen is that in Christianity, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6">January 6th</a> is the Feast of the Epiphany, or officially the twelfth day of Christmas. I suppose if we were being truly technical about it, the twelfth night of Christmas would fall on January 5th...<br /><br />In addition, William S. Baring-Gould in his <a href="https://amzn.to/2QrZ4G3"><i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, posited that because Holmes was a little cranky on the morning of January 7th — the date on which <i>The Valley of Fear</i> began — he had a hangover, induced by birthday celebrations the evening prior.<br /><div><br /></div><div>And why 170?
