While most Sherlockians know that Sherlock Holmes didn't actually wear an Inverness cape, the world at large has another perception. Along with the meerschaum pipe and deerstalker hat, the Inverness is one of the classic accouterments that helps identify this Victorian era icon.
In the November 5 issue of the New York Times, the Money section has an article entitled Mist, Moors and a Better Rain Cape concerning the ingenuity behind constructing a better Inverness for bagpipers. Interesting issues at play there.
And, if you're in the market for an Inverness yourself (a number of my Sherlockian friends have them, both in light nylon waterproof material as well as Highland wool - which is amazingly warm), here are a few resources for you:
- The Scottish Inverness Cape Company - Harris tweed and rainproofs
- Mister Antony - manufacturer mentioned in the NYT article
- The Kilt Store
