Watson, M.D. as his helpmate.</div><div><br /></div><div>Time and again, Holmes put the good doctor into questionable circumstances, and Watson gave it his best effort (sometimes after Holmes had to overcome Watson's initial reluctance).</div><div><br /></div><div>In “The Bruce-Partington Plans,” we find Holmes considering breaking and entering the household of the suspect, and Watson initially expressing some trepidation before coming around:</div><div><br /></div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>   “I don’t like it, Holmes.”</div><div>   “My dear fellow, you shall keep watch in the street. I’ll do the criminal part. It’s not a time to stick at trifles. Think of Mycroft’s note, of the Admiralty, the Cabinet, the exalted person who waits for news. We are bound to go.”</div><div>My answer was to rise from the table.</div><div>   “You are right, Holmes. We are bound to go.”</div><div>He sprang up and shook me by the hand.</div><div>   “I knew you would not shrink at the last,”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>And when Sherlock Holmes announced his plans to burgle Charles Augustus Milverton's household, Watson resolutely demanded to join him:</div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>   “Well, I don’t like it; but I suppose it must be,” said I. “When do we start?”</div><div>   “You are not coming.”</div><div>   “Then you are not going,” said I. “I give you my word of honour—and I never broke it in my life—that I will take a cab straight to the police-station and give you away unless you let me share this adventure with you.”</div><div>   “You can’t help me.”</div><div>   “How do you know that? Whether because of being overwhelmed with seeing all of the online updates or from traveling, we just forgot about it.</div><div><br /></div><div>Which seems entirely on-brand for today's comic.</div><div><br /></div><div>When we think about all of the things Sherlock Holmes had to keep in his mind and the multiple monographs he seemed to have at the ready (much like Adam West's Batman had the can of Bat Shark-Repellent spray handy that one time a shark froze to his leg...), it's astounding that his "little brain-attic" seemed to be organized and prepped for just the right moment.</div><div><br /></div><div>Even <strike>Conan Doyle</strike> Watson seemed to have difficulty remembering dates. H placed "Wisteria Lodge" in 1892, when Holmes was in the second year of his hiatus.</div><div><br /></div><div>And the ultimate fumbling of dates: not between stories, but <i>within</i> one. When Jabez Wilson visited Baker Street in "The Red-Headed League" and shared the origins of his strange tale, he noted "April 27, 1890, just two months ago." And yet, when he returned a little while later, he showed Holmes and Watson this:</div><div><br /></div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>He held up a piece of white cardboard about the size of a sheet of note-paper. As Dakin explains in his introduction: </div><div></div><blockquote><div>"Instead of being dazzled by Sherlock’s genius, as others are, we have taken a good look at the limited range of skills he considered important, sorted them into helpful areas, and deduced some wisdom that can be applied to your life.</div><div><br /></div><div>"For example, Holmes is a master of disguise. But this book won’t tell you how to successfully portray a drunken groom or an old Italian priest. It will, however, look at how disguise is used in everyday life, online and in the media, to confuse and deceive you." </div></blockquote><div></div><div><br /></div><div>The inky, scratchy caricatures are appealing, capturing Holmes' unique blend of awareness, presence, and grumpiness. There's a dark humor to some of them that suits the general air of knowing cynicism in the advice and examples. </div><div><br /></div><div>There are a number of quotes from Holmes and other characters, used by Dakin as a jumping-off point for advice and observations. He reinforces the importance of detail, of carefully curating your knowledge to be useful, thinking through the strategy of fighting, techniques to gain information, and the importance of friendship. </div><div><br /></div><div>In between, he draws life lessons from specific stories, including <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, "The Blue Carbuncle," "The Red-Headed League," and "The Man With the Twisted Lip." Some of the points he aims for can seem a bit of a stretch, but at least his suggestions are thought-provoking. </div><div><br /></div><div>This small, slim hardcover is aimed at the gift market. Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons.<br /><br />Of all of the quotes in the Canon, William Shakespeare was the most oft-quoted author. There is but one Shakespearean play that Holmes quotes twice: <i><a href="https://amzn.to/37GCVtA">Twelfth Night</a></i>. In <i>The Sign of the Four</i>, Holmes concludes, "All is well that ends well." This is from from Act IV, Scene 4. And in "The Empty House," Holmes states "'Journeys end in lovers meetings,' as the old play says," from Act II, Scene 3.<br /><br />The reason the date was chosen is that in Christianity, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6">January 6th</a> is the Feast of the Epiphany, or officially the twelfth day of Christmas. I suppose if we were being truly technical about it, the twelfth night of Christmas would fall on January 5th...<br /><br />In addition, William S. Baring-Gould in his <a href="https://amzn.to/2QrZ4G3"><i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, posited that because Holmes was a little cranky on the morning of January 7th — the date on which <i>The Valley of Fear</i> began — he had a hangover, induced by birthday celebrations the evening prior.<br /><div><br /></div><div>And why 168?
