The award will be judged on the mentor’s commitment to bringing aspiring Sherlockians into the cause and encouraging them to find ways to keep green the memory of Sherlock Holmes. While those activities could be in the traditional realm of trifling monographs and playing The Game, we would also recognize that the effort could take place in other media and activities. </div><div><br /></div><div>To sum up who we are looking for in a few words: Someone who is generous, welcoming, and offers encouragement.</div><p><br /></p><h3>Who Is Eligible For The Award?</h3><p>The Susan Rice Mentorship Award is open to all living Sherlockians who are generous, welcoming, and offer encouragement. They will also need to have a proven record that supports that definition. No current judges or previous winners may be considered for the award. The award is not limited to members of the Baker Street Irregulars.</p><p><br /></p><h3>How Is Someone Nominated?</h3><p>The award will be given based on nominations. The nominator should complete an essay of <b>750 words or fewer </b>that answers this question: “Who do you believe should be recognized for their work in mentoring aspiring Sherlockians and why? Please provide specific examples of their guidance, encouragement, and welcoming spirit.” </p><p>Qualities to consider when nominating: Welcoming to all Sherlockians; looking out for new Sherlockians to join the ranks; encouraging involvement and guiding people through their participation; connecting new Sherlockians to current members of the BSI; believing in someone even if they don’t believe in themselves; leaving the organization better than when they joined it. </p><p>Should someone be nominated in one year and not win, they would need to be re-nominated for consideration in succeeding years.</p><p><br /></p><h3>Where Should Nominations Be Sent?</h3><p>Nominations should be sent to <a href="mailto:ricementorshipaward@gmail.com">ricementorshipaward@gmail.com</a>. They wrote:</p><blockquote><p> “We are deeply saddened to share news of the passing of our friend, June Wyndham Davies. Her transition was peaceful and she was with loved ones."</p></blockquote><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><h2 style="text-align: left;">An Eye for Holmes</h2><h4 style="text-align: left;">“Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself; but talent instantly recognizes genius.” [VALL]</h4><p>Born on June 27th in Cardiff, Wales to Mervyn and Despina Wyndham Davies, June trained at RADA and began her career as an actress before moving behind the camera. She joined the BBC as a director in 1965, working across single-play strands including <i>30 Minute Theate</i>r and <i>Sunday Afternoon Theatre</i>, then went freelance in 1969, directing for the BBC, Anglia, and Yorkshire television as well as Granada — work that included the Emmy-nominated <i>Heidi </i>(1974) and long stretches on <i>Coronation Street</i> and <i>Crown Court</i>.</p><p><br /></p><p>From 1976 she worked almost exclusively for Granada, producing dark and supernatural drama <i>Shades of Darkness</i> among it — and the Victorian-set <i>Cribb</i> series. It was against that backdrop that <a href="http://www.dunwich.org/tv/sherlock/junewynd.html" target="_blank">she made the recommendation</a> for which Sherlockians can be the most grateful: she suggested Jeremy Brett for the title role in <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>. By her own account, she was not even particularly fond of Sherlock Holmes. She simply knew talent when she saw it — which, as Holmes himself might have observed, is a rarer gift than it sounds.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Guiding the Canon to the Screen</h2><h4 style="text-align: left;">“A friendly native will surely guide us.” [CREE]</h4><p>Wyndham Davies went on to produce <i><a href="https://amzn.to/4A8vjxV" target="_blank">The Return of Sherlock Holmes</a></i>, taking over day-to-day running of the series when Michael Cox stepped back to his executive producing duties. When Cox resumed direct control for <i><a href="https://amzn.to/4yqUVo0" target="_blank">The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes</a></i> (1991), she returned to lead the two-hour feature films that followed — among them <b><i>The Master Blackmailer</i></b> (1992) — working with screenwriter Jeremy Paul to stretch thinner source material to feature length.</p><p><br /></p><p>Her fiercest fight came with <i><a href="https://amzn.to/4yx9kz3" target="_blank">The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes</a></i> (1994). Having initially been denied airtime, she fought for and won six one-hour episodes — then had to steer the production through Jeremy Brett's advancing illness, a circumstance that led to the decision in one episode to give Holmes this part to his brother Mycroft, rather than abandon the story. It was producing under the most difficult of circumstances, in service of a series she had helped propel.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><h2 style="text-align: left;">A Career Beyond Baker Street</h2><h4 style="text-align: left;">“Art in the blood is liable to take the strangest forms.” [GREE]</h4><p>Holmes was only ever part of her output. In 1997 she won a BAFTA Cymru for Best Drama for <i>August</i>, a Welsh-set adaptation of <i>Uncle Vanya</i>, directed by its star Anthony Hopkins. She had previously received the Chicago International Film Festival's Silver Plaque for <i>The Lady's Maid's Bell</i> (1985). Along the way, she gave early opportunities to actors including Michael Caine, Hugh Grant, and Rhys Ifans — a reminder that her eye for talent was no one time accident of casting Brett, but a career-long habit.</p><p><br /></p><p>The Granada series she helped shepherd to screen remains, for many, a fixed point in a changing age against which every subsequent Sherlock Holmes is measured. For a generation of viewers raised on Nigel Bruce’s harrumphing, hand-wringing Watson — lovable, certainly, but irredeemably the butt of the joke and <i>Boobus Britannicus</i> in the flesh — Burke’s arrival was nothing short of a corrective. <p>Here, at last, was the Watson Conan Doyle had actually written: an Army surgeon who had seen Maiwand, a man of action who carried his service revolver and knew how to use it, a physician of professional competence, and — perhaps most importantly — an intelligent, observant, fully grown human being whom Sherlock Holmes would actually have chosen as his friend.</p><p><br></p><span></span></div>

The death of Michael Pennington (<a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0672190/?ref_=mv_close" target="_blank">IMDb</a>) at the age of 82, announced this weekend, takes one such impersonator from us. </div><div><br></div><div>His <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/obituaries/2026/05/10/michael-pennington-english-shakespeare-company-old-vic/" target="_blank">obituary in <i>The Telegraph</i></a> notes he was “acclaimed for its intelligence and flawless diction”, which one would hope from the founder (with Michael Bogdanov) of the English Shakespeare Company, the author of ten books on his craft, and over a half-century of stage work that any actor would envy. </div><div><br></div><div>But Sherlockians recall Pennington for a more particular distinction. In the span of six years, he played both halves of the most legendary archrivalry in literature: Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty. Few actors have stood on both sides of the abyss at Reichenbach. Fewer still have done so with his pedigree.</div><div><br></div><h2>The 80s Sherlock Holmes Renaissance</h2><h4>“and in 1887” [TWIS]</h4><div>To understand how Pennington landed in Baker Street at all, you have to understand the strange weather of the 1980s. Sherlock Holmes had never quite gone away (he never does), but the decade brought an extraordinary convergence. The Holmes stories had passed into the public domain in Britain in 1980, fifty years after Conan Doyle’s death, and a pair of producers, Sy Weintraub and Otto Plaschkes, seized on the opportunity, signing <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/02/much-shocked-by-death-houn_9.html" target="_blank">Ian Richardson</a> for a planned six-film series. Only two were filmed before Granada’s rival production scared the rest off the field — <i style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><a href="https://amzn.to/4ppUrus" rel="nofollow" style="color: #013fd3; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">The Sign of Four</a></i><span face="Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-size: 14px;"> and </span><i style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><a href="https://amzn.to/48hJF3b" rel="nofollow" style="color: #484848; font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">The Hound of the Baskervilles</a></i>, both in 1983 — but Richardson’s urbane, mischievous Holmes set a high bar for the decade.</div><div><br></div><div>That rival was, of course, the production at Granada Television in Manchester, where <b>Jeremy Brett</b> began in 1984 what would become the most exhaustive and, for many of us, the definitive screen treatment of the Canon. Brett’s Holmes was a force of nature — sharp, mercurial, and pitched at a key the role had never quite been pitched at before. By 1986, the Granada series was hitting its stride with its own <i>The Return of Sherlock Holmes</i> season, the very title resonating with the centenary that loomed.</div><div><br></div><div>For 1887 was the year Sherlock Holmes first appeared print, in <i>Beeton’s Christmas Annual</i>, in a story called <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>. The hundredth anniversary did not pass unnoticed: scion societies held celebrations, publishers commissioned new editions, the BBC and broadcasters worldwide commemorated, and producers on both sides of the Atlantic angled for a piece of the moment. It was into this fizzing centenary year that an American TV movie called <i>The Return of Sherlock Holmes</i> (with a sly nod toward both the centenary and the Granada series) arrived on CBS, on January 10, 1987.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><h2>A Holmes Out of Time</h2><h4>“The date being—?” [CREE]</h4><div>The premise was the stuff that gives more traditional Sherlockians hives. A Boston private investigator, Jane Watson (played by <b>Margaret Colin</b>), great-granddaughter of the good doctor, discovers in her ancestral estate a cryogenic capsule containing one Sherlock Holmes — placed there in suspended animation after an attempt on his life by a previously unsuspected brother of Professor Moriarty, who had infected him with bubonic plague. Thawed, cured, and dragged into the late twentieth century, Holmes is hauled off to America to help Jane with a case that draws (loosely) on <i>The Sign of Four</i>: a man named Small, a woman named Morstan, and a long line of grudges.</div><div><br></div><div>It is, frankly, a weak premise. It was also a backdoor pilot for a series that never came. The script is uneven, the science is silly, and the second-act tour of suburban America with Holmes marveling at copy machines is exactly what you fear it might be. </div><div><br></div><div>And yet Pennington plays Holmes straight: alert, courtly, baffled but never broken, allowing the comedy to come from the world’s strangeness rather than from any softening of the man. His Holmes is tall, ascetic, slightly melancholy, and uncannily watchful. He looks, in fact, the way Holmes is supposed to look. </div><div><br></div><div>Reviews at the time were mixed (the <i>New York Times</i> harrumphed about a “felonious assault on the memory of Arthur Conan Doyle’s great detective”), but the IMDb reviews speak for themselves: more than one of them notes regret that the proposed series was never picked up. In November 1992, BBC Radio 4 broadcast its long-running, faithful, story-by-story dramatization of the Canon with <b>Clive Merrison</b> as Holmes and <b>Michael Williams</b> as Watson, an ensemble that would in time produce the first complete radio adaptation of all sixty stories in the Canon.</div><div><br></div><div>The story that month was “The Final Problem,” and for the role of <b>Professor James Moriarty</b>, the producers cast Michael Pennington. The now-classic film <i>Young Sherlock Holmes</i> and the more recent series <i>Young Sherlock</i> have taken on this period with gusto.</div><div><br /></div><div>The other period is the Great Hiatus — those mysterious years between Holmes's plunge over the Reichenbach Falls on May 4, 1891, and his startling reappearance in Watson's consulting room in the spring of 1894. Conan Doyle gave us only the briefest sketch of Holmes's wanderings to Tibet, Persia, Mecca, and Khartoum. The rest has been left to our imaginations — and has proven to be fertile ground for scholars, pasticheurs, and screenwriters alike.</div> <p>The latest entry in this venerable tradition comes from a Swiss-German-Belgian co-production titled <em><strong>The Death of Sherlock Holmes</strong></em> (working title), which began filming this spring and is slated for a 2027 premiere.</p><p><br /></p> <h2>A Cast and Crew of Note</h2> <h4><span style="text-align: center;">“</span>extends over many nations<span style="text-align: center;">”</span> [SIGN]</h4> <p><a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1245863/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_7_nm_1_in_0_q_Rafe%20Spall" target="_blank">Rafe Spall</a> (<em>Under Salt Marsh</em>, <em>Trying</em>) takes up the deerstalker — or whatever passes for one in his amnesiac state — alongside <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1760420/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_5_nm_1_in_0_q_Deleila%20Piasko" target="_blank">Deleila Piasko</a> (<em>The Exposure</em>, <em>Transatlantic</em>). </p><p>The series is the brainchild of <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3388080/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_0_nm_1_in_0_q_Claudia%20Bluemhuber" target="_blank">Claudia Bluemhuber</a> (<em>Fallen, Robin and the Hoods</em>), <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1825205/?ref_=fn_t_1" target="_blank">André Küttel</a> (<em>Needle Park Baby, </em><i>Die Beschatter</i>), and <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1301190/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_3_nm_5_in_0_q_Pierre%20Monnard">Pierre Monnard</a> (<em>Needle Park Baby, </em><em>Winter Palace</em>), with Küttel and <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt22875000/?ref_=nm_flmg_job_1_accord_1_cdt_t_3" target="_blank">Simone Schmid</a> (<em>Die Beschatter</em>) handling the scripts. Monnard and Bluemhuber share directing duties.</p> <p>Producer Silver Reel, fresh off a 2025 International Emmy win for the YA series <em>Fallen</em>, is steering the project alongside Sky Switzerland, SRF, ARD Degeto, and Umedia. Sphere Abacus is handling international distribution, while Sky has acquired exclusive U.K. and Ireland broadcast rights.</p><p><a href="https://www.srf.ch/kultur/film-serien/drehstart-in-kuerze-srf-koproduziert-eine-neue-sherlock-holmes-serie" target="_blank">According to SRF</a>, filming will take place in Switzerland, South Tyrol, and Bavaria.</p><p><br /></p> <h2>What Happened After Reichenbach?</h2> <h4><span style="text-align: center;">“</span>It was, indeed, a fearful place<span style="text-align: center;">”</span> [FINA]</h4> <p>Here is where the premise gets interesting for those of us who have spent considerable time pondering the Hiatus. Set against what the producers describe as the "majestic and merciless" Swiss Alps, the story opens with an Englishman pulled barely alive from an icy mountain stream by a local woman named Alma and her young son Franz. When the village doctor turns up murdered, suspicion falls on the boy — leaving the amnesiac stranger as his only ally.</p> <p>The man remembers nothing of his past. But flashes of razor-sharp deduction begin to surface, betraying a hidden history. As fragments of memory return, he must reckon with a question that no Sherlockian will find suspenseful in the slightest, but which our hero apparently must work out for himself: who is he, really? </p><p>What begins as an isolated Alpine mystery widens into a far-reaching conspiracy, inching him toward the legendary name he may once have borne. It is, in essence, the Great Hiatus told as a memory-loss thriller, with the Holmes compelled to deduce his own identity.</p><p><br /></p> <h2>A Crowded Field and a Welcome Addition</h2> <h4 style="text-align: left;">“So many have said so, and yet here I am” [THOR]</h4> <p>SRF notes that there are more than 250 Sherlock Holmes screen productions — making him <a href="https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2012/5/sherlock-holmes-awarded-title-for-most-portrayed-literary-human-character-in-film-tv-41743" target="_blank">the most-portrayed literary character in cinema history</a>. Adding another television series to that already groaning shelf might seem redundant, particularly at this time, but the Hiatus has always been fertile ground precisely because Conan Doyle left it so sparsely filled in. </p><p>From Nicholas Meyer's <em>The Seven-Per-Cent Solution</em> to Caleb Carr's <em>The Italian Secretary</em> and Anthony Horowitz's <em>The House of Silk</em>, writers have repeatedly returned to the question of where Holmes went and what he did.</p> <p>What sets this production apart is its geography. Filming in the very Alps where Conan Doyle dispatched his hero — and where Sherlockians have made annual pilgrimages to Meiringen and the Reichenbach Falls for decades (the most recent by the <a href="https://pod.link/ihearofsherlock/episode/NmU4ZjQ1MjktMTNlZS00N2Y2LThmMzYtMmU5MDMwN2FmZjdm" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Society of London having just concluded</a>) — promises an authenticity of setting that no soundstage can replicate. </p><p>Whether the storytelling rises to the level of the locations, we shall have to wait until 2027 to discover.</p> <p>For now, we will be following with great interest. As Holmes himself observed upon his return:</p> <blockquote> <p>“<strong style="font-style: italic;">My dear Watson, I owe you a thousand apologies. Some tiptoe around the scenes like polite visitors at 221B Baker Street — competent, forgettable, grateful for the tea.</p><p>And then there are those who settle into the basket chair beside the fireplace, and become not only Sherlock Holmes's biographer, but his friend and custodian as well.</p><p>Today we mourn <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000380/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_1_nm_7_in_0_q_robert%2520du" target="_blank">Robert Duvall</a> (1931–2026), and for those of us who keep green the memory of Sherlock Holmes, we remember him not only as an American acting titan (in roles such as Tom Hagen, Lt. Colonel Kilgore, or Augustus McCrae, or any of the towering men he embodied) but as a most unusual Dr. John H. Watson.</p><p>Because in 1976, in a film as strange and audacious as any pastiche ever put to celluloid, Duvall stepped into Watson’s shoes in <i><a href="https://amzn.to/4cwRODa" target="_blank">The Seven-Per-Cent Solution</a></i> — and in doing so, gave us one of the most human portrayals of the good doctor ever committed to film.</p><p><br /></p><h2 style="text-align: left;">A Holmes Who Needed Help</h2><h4 style="text-align: left;">“the strain caused by his immense exertions” [‘The Reigate Squire’]</h4><p>We all know the premise: adapted from Nicholas Meyer’s bestselling novel, was that Sherlock Holmes was not merely eccentric. He was addicted to cocaine. And that dependency led him to an obsession with Professor Moriarty, eventually leading to Holmes's health collapse.</p><p>And so it was Watson, not only a physician but Holmes's only friend, who duped him into traveling to Vienna to be treated by none other than Sigmund Freud.</p><p>That reversal is what makes Duvall’s performance so essential to Sherlockian history. For once, Watson was not the amiable biographer, the loyal chronicler scribbling in the margins of genius. He was the moral center. The steady hand. He played him as Watson was, first and foremost: a physician.</p><p>Duvall's Watson is calculating without being cold, concerned yet restrained, and deeply sorrowful as he watches his friend unravel under the weight of paranoia and narcotics.</p><p>He is conflicted about having to deceive Holmes, but resolute in his effort to do so, as this is the only way to save him. We mere mortals had little hope of acquiring or applying the skills and methods of the great detective. Based on <a href="https://amzn.to/455I6TQ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Andrew Lane's <i>Young Sherlock Holmes</i> book series</a>, this new version is grittier, irreverent, and action-packed. </p><p>Not to be confused with the Oscar nominated <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3YAun3H" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Young Sherlock Holmes</a></i> directed by Chris Columbus that debuted 40 years ago, we find Holmes at university rather than at public school, and in this origin story, rather than an early meeting of Holmes and Watson, we have an early meeting of Holmes and Moriarty. </p><p>The plot summary, from the official description:</p><blockquote><p>"Sherlock Holmes is a disgraced young man – raw and unfiltered – when he finds himself wrapped up in a murder case that threatens his liberty. His first ever case unravels a globe-trotting conspiracy that changes his life forever. However, in November, a <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Sherlock/comments/1p0fo59/the_sherlock_escape_room_in_london_looks_like/" target="_blank">Reddit poster</a> reported that, when trying to book a slot to visit, there was no response to the phone number or email address. I had a similar experience — when emailing, I got an immediate auto-response, but no actual follow-up. </p><p>Comments on that same post report an announcement that the owners "have decided to commence liquidation proceedings" as well as a former worker claiming co-workers were still owed payment. And for the uninitiated, it's just a matter of not knowing what you need to survive the BSI Weekend.<br /><br />This marks <b>13 years</b> since we began sharing these tips — the <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2012/12/a-suggestion-perhaps-houn_28.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">first of which</a> was inspired by interviewing several members of the Baker Street Irregulars — including some newer members who might have a less distant memory of their first Weekend, and some who have been at it literally for decades. Information has been updated to reflect changes in the city as well as in technology.</div><div><br /><br />And if there are any additional tips that you think would be helpful to attendees, please feel free to add your own as a comment below. If you have to bring an extra bag that you can fold up and put in your suitcase, do so. </li><li>Some suggest bringing a plastic shopping bag to the BSI dinner, as it makes carrying the dinner packet around a little easier, especially if you plan to go to another venue afterward. </li><li>You might also consider <b>bringing a shopping bag to the Merchants Room</b> on Saturday to carry your various purchases. Not all merchants provide bags; carting away your haul is <i>your</i> responsibility. And you <i>do</i> want a haul, don't you?</li></ul><br /><h3>Meeting Others 📇</h3><ul><li>Bring business cards (a quaint tradition). You will be meeting a lot of new people, and you will be sharing contact information. Put as many as you think that you will need in your pack, and then double it. And be sure to include all modes of contacting you, including website, social media, etc. </li><li>If you're in need of a good card, the <a href="http://moo.com/">Moo</a> does a splendid job and <a href="http://vistaprint.com/">VistaPrint</a> has a fast turnaround time. </li><li>If you want to make sure you get your table mates to sign your menu, bring a pen to the dinner.</li><ul><li><b><i>Pro tip</i></b>: there's usually a pen in the dinner packet.</li></ul><li>Allow yourself time to schmooze with other Sherlockians. This is the fastest way to make new friends, who will quickly become old friends. </li></ul><br /><h3>Comportment / Etiquette 🤝</h3><ul><li><b>Do</b> tell people how good it is to see them again — or how lovely it is to meet them for the first time after having known them only online. </li><li><b>Do</b> tell them that you miss them in the intervening months between BSI weekends. </li><li><b>Do</b> tell them how invaluable they are to you as a Sherlockian comrade-in-arms and friend and how much you value their friendship. </li><li>If this is your first time at the Weekend or at an event, <b>ask questions</b> if you're unsure of something, are curious, or would like to understand more. As in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>, "certain rites, and also certain duties" may be involved, and it may not be clear why.</li><li>If you're scheduled to speak at an event, be mindful not to overdo the alcohol beforehand. Dutch courage is usually inappropriate in such circumstances. </li><li>In this hyper-connected world, it's easy to forget that there are those attending the weekend for whom "it is always 1895" — or nearly so. When you're taking photographs, please be mindful of those who are firmly rooted in the 20th (or 19th!) century and who might not want to appear on your timeline by <u>asking their permission</u> to share your photos of them online. Common courtesy is timeless.</li><li>Please be kind to anyone helping you from the BSI and wider Sherlockian community. We're all volunteers, doing this out of the kindness of our hearts. Your kindness, patience, and understanding will go a long way.</li></ul><div><br /></div><h3>Attire 🥿 🧥</h3><ul><li>Bring comfortable shoes. The weekend inevitably includes a lot of walking. </li><li>This one is especially for the ladies: it's useful to have a change of shoes in your handbag so the stilettos don't murder you by the end of the evening (or vice versa). </li><li>Bring warm clothes. It is winter in New York, and non-Sherlockian New York friends say they know when we are in town because we bring really bad weather. </li><li>Dress in layers. Many times, the weather can be cold, but there have been instances in New York in January when we could — and did — comfortably walk about the streets without even a jacket on. </li></ul><br /><h3>Money 💰</h3><ul><li>Bring small bills. They will come in handy as you share taxis going from place to place, and you’ll find them handy when tipping helpful service employees. It is also customary to leave a tip for your housecleaning staff at the hotel.</li><ul><li><b><i>Pro tip</i></b>: We prefer withdrawing $2 bills from the bank and bringing them with us to make things extra efficient when entering or exiting doors and taxis.</li></ul><li>Bring a checkbook (or cash!) to the Merchants Room, as not everyone there takes credit cards (yet) and you may find an item you must have. </li><li>If you see something you're interested in at the Merchants Room and you can afford it, don't wait until your second sweep of the room — it will probably be gone by then.</li><li>Most of the vendors in the Merchants Room are very kind and understanding people, and many are also collectors or Sherlockians themselves. If you would care to haggle with them, they're likely open to it. It can't hurt to ask.</li><li>The BSI and Wessex Press tables accept <b>credit cards, PayPal and Apple Pay</b>.</li><li>Estimate, on the top side, what you expect to spend — and then double it. That might get you through. 💸</li></ul><br /><h3>Time 🕰️</h3><ul><li>If you have any health conditions, allow yourself time to go back to your hotel room for periodic rests. Many find these rests invaluable, enabling them to enjoy the weekend despite their condition. Schedule your time. </li><li>Know when you need to be places (including when you need to catch the train/plane back home). </li><li>Count on it taking some time to get a cab amongst the other Sherlockians who may be headed to the same events as you.</li><li>Alternatively, download a ride-hailing app (such as <b>Uber </b>or <b>Lyft, </b>or <b>Curb </b>for taxis) to help you avoid these waits. <b>See below for more details and a way to save money on rides</b>.</li></ul><br /><h3>Getting Around 🚕 🚇 🚶</h3><ul><li>Hey, Magellan, guess what? You have the power of a global satellite navigation system in the palm of your hand. That is, if you have a smartphone. You can either request a cab with it, or when you're in a cab simply enter a 7-digit code displayed in the cab and it will pair with your device.</li></ul></ul><br /><h3>Logistics 📝</h3><ul><li>Bring your event payment confirmations, just in case of a glitch in the system. </li><li>Also, everything is pretty centrally located, but it's a good idea to have a list of your schedule with the addresses of the venues so that you don't suddenly find yourself asking, where the devil am I supposed to be right now? </li><li>The heat during the BSI dinner has been uncomfortable in years past in the Yale Club (potentially dangerously uncomfortable a few years ago) – if this happens again, vests/waistcoats are not advised. Unless you're <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcaric/8379354330/">Mattias Bostrom</a>. </li></ul><br /><h3>The Unscheduled 📅</h3><ul><li>If possible, make breakfast plans with other Sherlockians (unless you prefer to eat breakfast alone — saving energy for later conversations).</li><li>To some, the secret to enjoying the jam-packed weekend is to find private, unpublicized events for more intimate interactions. How to find these? “<i>You know my methods. Apply them</i>.” </li></ul><br /><h3>Dining 🍽️</h3>What? You’re not getting enough food between events? Thankfully there are gaps that allow a Sherlockian to venture places on his or her own. And of course, there are plenty of restaurants in and near Grand Central Station, which is in great proximity to the Yale Club and the Westin Grand Central Hotel.<br /><ul><li>The restaurant scene in NYC has changed drastically during the pandemic. Some old favorites may no longer be there; some may have restricted hours or dining arrangements.</li><li>Check <b><a href="https://www.opentable.com/landmark/restaurants-near-grand-central-station" target="_blank">Open Table</a></b> for restaurants that take reservations; they offer free booking and allow you to see availability of tables by time and by number of seats. </li><li>Several Sherlockians like to go to the <b><a href="http://www.oysterbarny.com/">Oyster Bar</a></b> for dinner.
