"Education never ends, Watson." [RETI]

In early 2006, Stanford University initiated a public-reading project called Discovering Sherlock Holmes, in which their "rediscovery of the 19th century" efforts resulted in free copies of the Holmes stories reproduced in the Strand magazine, in serialized format. The stories included "A Scandal in Bohemia," The Speckled Band," The Hound of the Baskervilles, and "The Final Problem."

The Stanford project will continue in 2007 with twelve additional stories, released on a weekly basis: “The Empty House,” “Silver Blaze,” “The Musgrave Ritual,” “The Reigate Squires,” “The Greek Interpreter, ” “Charles Augustus Milverton,” “The Abbey Grange,” “The Second Stain,” “The Bruce-Partington Plans,” “ The Devil’s Foot,” “The Dying Detective,” and “His Last Bow.”

Since the first round of Sherlock Holmes serials proved more popular than the Stanford staff anticipated (there were over 12,000 requests for free facsimiles to be mailed out), this time around, the cost for paper-based reproductions will cost $20 for the set of 12. The site will again have PDF versions of each as well.

If you're interested in signing up, please visit the Discovering Sherlock Holmes subscription page (open as of November 9). There is also a place for you to make a donation, in order to keep this program going in the future.

A special note to teachers: this is a great project to get your middle school and high school classes involved in reading Sherlock Holmes stories. For more information on incorporating the teaching of Holmes in the classroom, check out the Beacon Society and the wonderful work they're doing.

Thanks to Randall Stock, who reported this item in a recent posting to the Conan Doyle Yahoo! group.
