A real-life version of "The Lion's Mane" occurred in Westport, Massachusetts, near Boston. While not a Lion's Mane (aka Cyanaea capillata), it was no less traumatic when a swimmer was <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/06/29/swimmer_stung_by_portuguese_man_of_war_off_westport_beach/" style="color: #000066; font-weight: bold;">severely stung by two Portuguese Man-of-War jellyfish</a>. Understandably, the victim said:

Penned by Watson after he presumed his friend, Mr. Sherlock Holmes, perished at the Reichenbach Falls, these words - and the extremely emotion-filled introduction to <a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/fina.htm" style="color: #000066; font-weight: bold;">"The Final Problem"</a> - reflect the level of despair that Watson and his readers felt when then learned of the demise of Holmes.

In a similar vein, J.K. Rowling is making headlines as <a href="http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/06/26/060626232443.lhc6qc94.html" style="color: #000066; font-weight: bold;">she announced there will be two deaths</a> in the last installment of the Harry Potter series, possibly including the protagonist. 
 
The Guardian 's interactive editorial "Comment is free" section has an entry called <a href="http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/phil_maynard/2006/06/harry_potter_must_die.html" style="color: #000066; font-weight: bold;">Harry Potter Must Die</a>, in which Phil Maynard claims "it's worth remembering that deaths in literature aren't always what they seem." He naturally uses an example of a certain detective, whose exploits made him the Harry Potter of his day, in terms of popularity and sales.

Back on <a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;" href="http://bakerstreetjournal.blogspot.com/2006/04/date-being-asked-holmes.html">April 27</a>, we announced a Google Calendar version of the Calendar of Sherlockian Events. As it happens, that version was only open to Gmail account holders. After some revising, Google has made it possible for non-Gmail users to view and use the calendar, so we now present the calendar in the right column of the blog. This is a particularly useful tool for traveling Sherlockians, or for scion leaders who would like to advise Web users of their events. The calendar is still based on <a href="http://sherlockiancalendar.homestead.com">Ron Fish's authoritative database</a>; there are links to both versions in the "Events"section of the main blog, which as always, you can reach by clicking on the Baker Street Blog banner at the top of your page.

For those who have not yet had the pleasure, Randall Stock runs a wonderful little Web site called <a href="http://bestofsherlock.com/" target="_blank">The Best of Sherlock Holmes</a> that, among other things, tracks the whereabouts of <a href="http://www.bestofsherlock.com/conan-doyle-manuscripts.htm" style="color: #000066; font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">Conan Doyle manuscripts</a>. 
 
He recently announced that there has been an update to his <a href="http://www.bestofsherlock.com/beetons-christmas-annual.htm" style="color: #000066; font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">checklist of Beeton's Christmas Annuals from 1887</a>. Randall says:

The "Escapes" section of today's New York Times ran an article entitled <a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;" href="http://travel2.nytimes.com/2006/06/16/travel/escapes/16down.html">To a Castle, by River and Rail</a>. The article mentions: <ul><li><a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;" href="http://hartford.about.com/cs/daytrips/a/aagcastle.htm">Gillette Castle State Park</a> and William Gillette's association with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes;</li><li><a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.essexstreamtrain.com/">The Essex Steam Train and Riverboat</a>, a wonderful way to see the countryside;</li><li><a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.sherlockholmesfestival.com/">The Sherlock Holmes Festival</a> to be held in Tryon, NC November 3-6.</li></ul> I can highly recommend any of the Connecticut sites - I've been there many times and Gillette Castle is where I got my start as a Sherlockian.
