When it converges with the world of Sherlock Holmes, it becomes all the more interesting.</p><p>Joshua Harvey lives at that convergence and has some wonderful stories to tell about his history with music, with Sherlock Holmes, and with Patrick Gowers, the composer of the score of the Granada/ITV Sherlock Holmes series.</p><p>In addition to his work with Gowers' material, Josh threw himself into a Canonical composing fit during the pandemic, writing theme songs for a variety of Sherlockian societies (aka "scions") that met both online and in person. The Music Sherlock Holmes Heard in The Red-Headed League

From his own violin-playing to a few mentions of concerts he attended, he often escaped from the woes of the world and the problems he was trying to solve through music.</p><p>In "The Adventure of the Red Headed League," he says "Sarasate plays at St. James's Hall this afternoon," and he and Watson make their way to the concert, where Holmes clearly enjoyed himself, "wrapped in the most perfect happiness, gently waving his long, thin fingers in time to the music."</p><p>In addition to being a performer, Sarasate was a composer. If you've never had the opportunity to listen to some original Sarasate, here's <a href="https://youtu.be/E_8f2Za39ZY" target="_blank">Navarra for Two Violins and Piano, Op. 33 (1889)</a>, from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, played by Paul Huang and Danbi Um on violin, and by Orion Weiss on piano:</p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/E_8f2Za39ZY" width="560"></iframe></p><p><br /></p><p>Most chronologists agree that "The Red-Headed League" took place in late 1889 or 1890. Sure enough, in the time it takes to type "billie eilish you should see me in a crown bbc sherlock" into Google and read <a href="https://genius.com/a/billie-eilish-s-new-single-you-should-see-me-in-a-crown-is-inspired-by-an-episode-of-bbc-s-sherlock">the first item listed</a>, my hunch was confirmed.<br /> <br /> Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell was born on December 18, 2001. Home schooled by parents who work in the entertainment industry. She told <a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/billie-eilish-pops-next-it-girl">Vogue</a>:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "I’ve been in the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus since I was 8. And my brother [Finneas O'Connell, born July 30, 1997] has as well. That’s where I’ve gotten all my singing technique, even though it’s mostly choral stuff. It’s helped me learn the proper way to sing and not ruin my voice completely. But I’ve just always sung, all the time. I sang so much that my family had to shush me. Then I started writing when I was about 11." </blockquote> <br /> Finneas writes songs, has his own band and acts. He's been on <i>Modern Family</i> and <i>Glee</i>, to name two. But his music style was ubiquitous.<br /> <br /> Born Melvin Ragin, he became known as Wah Wah Watson after his extensive use of the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/01/obituaries/wah-wah-watson-dead.html" target="_blank">wah-wah pedal</a> that he used for his guitar which he played with dozens of bands and lead singers such as The Supremes, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, and more.<br /> <br /> <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/01/obituaries/wah-wah-watson-dead.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fobituaries&action=click&contentCollection=obituaries&region=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=6&pgtype=sectionfront" target="_blank">Mr. Ragin passed away</a> last week at the age of 67.<br /> <br /> The wah-wah effect originated in the 1920s when musicians moved mutes in and out of their trumpet and trombone bells. We're sure you've <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Msh45Mruxbo" target="_blank">seen this in action</a>.<br /> <br /> Ragin used the effect on his guitar and it created a signature tune throughout the late 60s and 70s.<br /> <br /> <h2> <b>The Sherlock Holmes Connection</b></h2> The reason we're mentioning Wah Wah Watson here isn't only because of his name. In 1976, he released his own album titled <i>Elementary</i>, featuring Watson on the cover wearing a deerstalker and with a meerschaum pipe.<br /> <br /> This would have been at the height of Sherlock Holmes fervor that was spurred on by <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose85" target="_blank">Nicholas Meyer, BSI</a> ("A Fine Morocco Case") and his book and film <i>The Seven Per-Cent Solution</i>. We here at I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere <a href="http://ihose.co/1916film" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">broke the news</a> that the long-lost film had been discovered in Paris and covered <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/06/sherlock-holmes-in-san-francisco.html#.V4eggLgrLb0" target="_blank">the screening of the film</a> at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival last year.<br /> <br /> We're pleased to present four musical themes that were played for the American premiere of the restored Gillette <i>Sherlock Holmes</i>. The excerpts are meant to illustrate the article, “Scoring Gillette’s Sherlock Holmes,” that acclaimed composer Donald Sosin wrote for the <i>BSJ Christmas Annual</i>, describing how he composed his music. And although these film excerpts are best understood when used in conjunction with Donald’s article, they can also be enjoyed on their own — examples of how a great original Holmesian score is constructed and coordinated with the images.<br /> <br /> The tracks come from the opening night performance when Gillette’s film was screened at San Francisco’s Castro Theater on May 30, 2015, where 2,000 people heard the score that night, performed by Sosin and his ensemble: Donald on piano with Günther Buchwald, violin; Sascha Jacobsen, bass; and Frank Bockius, percussion.<br /> <br /> <div style="text-align: center;"> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/videoseries?list=PL6m8pknf2xi93U_1gnk0plD7jgatMMz2V" width="640"></iframe><br /></div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PL6m8pknf2xi93U_1gnk0plD7jgatMMz2V&v=tmA3svbgk-4" target="_blank">Four Musical Themes from Gillette's <i>Sherlock Holmes</i></a></div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: left;"> Since then, the film has attracted several first-rate scores – all quite distinct and all fine examples of the broad range of silent film accompaniment. The film has attracted several leading silent film composers – Stephen Horne who accompanied the film in Bangkok; Neil Brand in Paris, London, Pordenone, and on the Flicker Alley DVD; Steve Sterner at New York’s Film Forum; Dan Drazin in Northbrook, Illinois; Dennis James in Santa Barbara, California; and Phil Carli at the Library of Congress and the BSI Conference in Chautauqua. No two performers sound alike, each creating his own signature motifs and building on those motifs to give fresh perspective to the characters and plot lines.</div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: center;"> The themes performed here are the building blocks that Sosin created to build his extraordinary score. The themes recur, permitting improvisation and ingenious acoustic effects and designed to provide a musical mirror to the ever-changing mood and action.</div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sherlock-holmes-the-odessa-connection#/" target="_blank">According to Sosin in an Indiegogo</a> he ran, he has been commissioned by the Odessa International Film Festival to expand that 4-musician score for a 45-piece orchestra. The premiere of that composition is set for July 16, 2016. The music is in rehearsal and on schedule – a generous, anonymous donor stepped in to make up the short fall. His connection to the world of Sherlock Holmes was through the 1965 Broadway musical <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker_Street_(musical)">Baker Street</a>.<br /> <br /> Born in Cardiff, Wales in 1929, Raymond Jessel earned a degree in music from the University of Wales and then emigrated to Canada, where he went to work as an orchestrator and composer for CBC Radio. He wrote a theatrical satire Spring Thaw with Marian Grudeff, which led to a collaboration on Baker Street and the score for a revival of <i>Hellzapoppin</i>.<br /> <br /> Jessel then moved to Hollywood where he began writing for variety shows such as <i>The Dean Martin Show</i>, <i>The Carol Burnett Show</i> and <i>The Smothers Brothers Show</i>. He wrote 34 episodes of <i>The Love Boat</i> — including the two-hour special "The Musical" — and was the story editor for 60 episodes between 1977 and 1980. Jessel also wrote nine episodes of <i>The Head of the Class</i>.<br /> <br /> According to <a href="http://www.rnh.com/bio/169/Jessel-Raymond">Rodgers & Hammerstein</a>:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> Ray Jessel returned to Broadway in 1979, being chosen by Richard Rodgers to write additional lyrics for I Remember Mama. He wrote the lyrics to four songs in the show including "A Little Bit More" — the last song Richard Rodgers was to write for the musical stage.</blockquote> <br /> But Jessel's surprise talent was actually in performing, which he took up at the age of 72. It was in this capacity that he paid a surprise visit to the Baker Street Irregulars in 2010. He dropped into the BSI cocktail reception and played <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL888E2C347114B076">a handful of songs</a> to the crowd's delight, including the hysterical "Short Term Memory Loss Blues," "Shirley Levine" and one number from <i>Baker Street</i>, "Finding Words for Spring."<br /> <div style="text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/videoseries?list=PL888E2C347114B076" width="640"></iframe><br /></div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <br /></div> Jessel had also popped into the BSI dinner the evening before, where he talked for a bit about his experience writing <i>Baker Street</i> and regaled us with additional songs from the musical. We count ourselves fortunate for having had the pleasure of seeing him perform live and for being the beneficiary of his excellent work on <i>Baker Street</i>.<br /> <br /> Of course, most of America came to know another side of Jessel rather late via his surprise hit "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtVqD-ac5eQ&ab_channel=WolfSmack" target="_blank">What She's Got</a>," featured on America's Got Talent in 2014.
