And 4K technology is the latest in that evolution.</div><div><br /></div><div>4K resolution refers to a display with a horizontal resolution of roughly 4,000 pixels, or 3840 x 2160 pixels. In <i>The Sign of the Four</i>, Holmes concludes, "All is well that ends well." This is from from Act IV, Scene 4. And in "The Empty House," Holmes states "'Journeys end in lovers meetings,' as the old play says," from Act II, Scene 3.<br /><br />The reason the date was chosen is that in Christianity, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6">January 6th</a> is the Feast of the Epiphany, or officially the twelfth day of Christmas. I suppose if we were being truly technical about it, the twelfth night of Christmas would fall on <b>January 5th</b>...<br /><br />In addition, William S. Baring-Gould in his <a href="https://amzn.to/2QrZ4G3"><i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, posited that because Holmes was a little cranky on the morning of January 7th — the date on which <i>The Valley of Fear</i> began — he had a hangover, induced by birthday celebrations the evening prior.<br /><div><br /></div><div>And why 171? Scott played Justin Playfair, a judge who retreats into fantasy and thinks he is Sherlock Holmes after his wife's death. It is set in New York City. Dr. Watson had been a surgeon but was never in the military. In this, Holmes is portrayed by Jonny Lee Miller as a petulant and obnoxious post-rehab drug addict. This program, <i><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7755494/" target="_blank">Miss Sherlock</a></i>, was created in 2018 and with it came with a female Sherlock and a female Dr. Wato-san, set in modern-day Tokyo. <br /><br /><center><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/V0FIUz5OpT4" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></center> <br /> <br /> <br /> Unless you speak Japanese, you might need a bigger screen to read the subtitles. The subtitles will not concern you because your eyes will already be riveted to the screen. Smart scripts and clean direction keep the action moving. <br /> <br /> <br /> You will recognize the stories, but just as you recognize one and think about the original tale, it will unfold in unexpected ways. The writing is very good, the visual impact of every scene is so well done. <br /> <br /> <br /> Sherlock and Wato-san rent an apartment from Kimi Hatano, in a house that looks like a Victorian throwback in the midst of a Tokyo neighborhood. Their digs are cluttered with what you would expect from Sherlock. All of the places and homes they visit are the expected minimalist, which provides a stark contrast. There are chemical experiments there too, but one of the results is a cucumber-based beauty cream. <br /> <br /> <br /> Sara "Sherlock" Shelly Futaba is every bit the genius detective, playing the most intense version of the Master. She is a fashionista, solving each crime in catwalk-ready but practical outfits and chasing down leads in stiletto heels. She is ruthless and unfeeling in her pursuit of the truth. Her instrument is the cello, which she plays flawlessly. The dressing gown has been replaced by delightful pajamas. She is superbly played by Yūko Takeuchi. <br /><br /> Dr. Wato ("Wato-san") has been a surgeon in Syria with PTSD who is now trying to find herself and romance. Sherlock is completely offended by her sense of fashion. She is definitely the long-suffering type, well portrayed by Shihori Kanjiya. <br /><br /> This version of the landlady is Kimi Hatano who is played by Ran Ito. Wato-san cooks traditional meals in her kitchen. She adds a lot to the ladies' lives, and is involved more than Mrs. Hudson was in the Canon. <br /><br /> Season 1 of <i>Miss Sherlock</i> contains 8 episodes. During the season we see their relationship evolve as their partnership grows. However, both are still insisting they are not friends.</div><div>  <br />The style of these episodes, and the stories, compare favorably to BBC's <i>Sherlock</i>. Although it is hard to do a side-by-side comparison, I found <i>Miss Sherlock</i> to be more riveting, with better stories, and less impressed with itself. <br /> <br /> <br /> Familiar characters abound, with their own modern and Japanese take. Among them, you will meet irresistible versions of Mycroft and Lestrade. It's like the familiar faces Dorothy saw when she woke up after the tornado in the scene from "The Wizard of Oz". They all seem so well cast, and make you happy to recognize them. As with the plots, there will be twists in the lineup.</div><div>  <br />When you can, give this smart, great, modern interpretation of Sherlock Holmes and his <br /> world a try. Unless you speak Japanese, be sure to watch when you can focus on the screen. <br /><br /> The English subtitles of this Japanese program remind of a story from the attempts at language translation during the Cold War, which may be apocryphal. Scientists had a computer translate "the spirit was willing, but the flesh was weak” to Russian, then translated the result from Russian back to English to the phrase “the vodka was good, but the meat was rotten.” </div><div><br /></div><div>In the case of <i>Miss Sherlock</i>, the results are astonishingly good. "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" translates to Japanese and back as "Eliminate the impossible…and you are left with the unlikely truth". <br /><br /></div><div> As of this writing, HBO has not responded to my question about Season 2 of <i>Miss Sherlock</i>. Even if there were one planned, it would have to be recast, due to the untimely death of Yûko Takeuchi, who played Sherlock, in September 2020.<br /><br /></div><div><i>Miss Sherlock</i> is available on HBO Max, HBO Asia, and Hulu Japan. I spent some time playing through it on regular and master difficulties and I can say I’m pretty impressed. </p><p>It’s a huge step up from the original and builds on what the devs have been improving over the years on all their Sherlock Holmes games! Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons.<br /><br />Of all of the quotes in the Canon, William Shakespeare was the most oft-quoted author. There is but one Shakespearean play that Holmes quotes twice: <i><a href="https://amzn.to/37GCVtA">Twelfth Night</a></i>. In <i>The Sign of the Four</i>, Holmes concludes, "All is well that ends well." This is from from Act IV, Scene 4. And in "The Empty House," Holmes states "'Journeys end in lovers meetings,' as the old play says," from Act II, Scene 3.<br /><br />The reason the date was chosen is that in Christianity, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6">January 6th</a> is the Feast of the Epiphany, or officially the twelfth day of Christmas. I suppose if we were being truly technical about it, the twelfth night of Christmas would fall on January 5th...<br /><br />In addition, William S. Baring-Gould in his <a href="https://amzn.to/2QrZ4G3"><i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, posited that because Holmes was a little cranky on the morning of January 7th — the date on which <i>The Valley of Fear</i> began — he had a hangover, induced by birthday celebrations the evening prior.<br /><div><br /></div><div>And why 169? Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons.<br /><br />Of all of the quotes in the Canon, William Shakespeare was the most oft-quoted author. There is but one Shakespearean play that Holmes quotes twice: <i><a href="https://amzn.to/37GCVtA">Twelfth Night</a></i>. In <i>The Sign of the Four</i>, Holmes concludes, "All is well that ends well." This is from from Act IV, Scene 4. And in "The Empty House," Holmes states "'Journeys end in lovers meetings,' as the old play says," from Act II, Scene 3.<br /><br />The reason the date was chosen is that in Christianity, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6">January 6th</a> is the Feast of the Epiphany, or officially the twelfth day of Christmas. I suppose if we were being truly technical about it, the twelfth night of Christmas would fall on January 5th...<br /><br />In addition, William S. Baring-Gould in his <a href="https://amzn.to/2QrZ4G3"><i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, posited that because Holmes was a little cranky on the morning of January 7th — the date on which <i>The Valley of Fear</i> began — he had a hangover, induced by birthday celebrations the evening prior.<br /><div><br /></div><div>And why 168? Or perhaps, given his background, how the haggis was made.</div><div><br /></div><div>He didn't create the genre of detective fiction, but he did popularize it. Greats such as Edgar Allan Poe and Wilkie Collins preceded him, but Doyle wasn't particularly fond of their heroes' abilities, as told by the authors.</div><div><br /></div><div>In <a href="https://youtu.be/tUjUZ-ASJeI" target="_blank">a 1929 movie reel</a>, he expressed his initial dissatisfaction:</div><div><br /></div><div><blockquote><div>Well, first of all, about the Sherlock Holmes stories. They came about in this way: I was quite a young doctor at the time and I had a course of scientific training, and I used to occasionally to read detective stories, it often annoyed me how in the old-fashioned detective story the detective always seemed to get at his results either by some sort of lucky chance or fluke, or else it was quite unexplained how he got there. He got there but he never gave an explanation to how. Now that didn't seem to me quite playing the game. It seemed to me that he's bound to give his reasons why he came to his conclusions.</div></blockquote><div><br /></div></div><div>So, he set out on a different path. A path that was not only possible but plausible, thanks to Dr. Joseph Bell, a professor at Edinburgh University, who taught Conan Doyle:</div><div><br /></div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>But when I began thinking about this, I began to think of turning scientific methods, as it were, onto the work of detection. And I used, as a student to have an old professor his name was Bell, who was extraordinarily quick at deductive work. So naturally I thought to myself, "well if a scientific man like Bell was to come into the detective business, he wouldn't do these things by chance, he'd get the thing by building it up, scientifically."</div><div><br /></div><div>So, having once conceived that line of thought, you can well imagine that I had as it were, a new idea of the detective and one which it interested me to work out. From his own violin-playing to a few mentions of concerts he attended, he often escaped from the woes of the world and the problems he was trying to solve through music.</p><p>In "The Adventure of the Red Headed League," he says "Sarasate plays at St. James's Hall this afternoon," and he and Watson make their way to the concert, where Holmes clearly enjoyed himself, "wrapped in the most perfect happiness, gently waving his long, thin fingers in time to the music."</p><p>In addition to being a performer, Sarasate was a composer. If you've never had the opportunity to listen to some original Sarasate, here's <a href="https://youtu.be/E_8f2Za39ZY" target="_blank">Navarra for Two Violins and Piano, Op. 33 (1889)</a>, from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, played by Paul Huang and Danbi Um on violin, and by Orion Weiss on piano:</p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/E_8f2Za39ZY" width="560"></iframe></p><p><br /></p><p>Most chronologists agree that "The Red-Headed League" took place in late 1889 or 1890. Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons.<br /><br />Of all of the quotes in the Canon, William Shakespeare was the most oft-quoted author. There is but one Shakespearean play that Holmes quotes twice: <i><a href="https://amzn.to/37GCVtA">Twelfth Night</a></i>. In <i>The Sign of the Four</i>, Holmes concludes, "All is well that ends well." This is from from Act IV, Scene 4. And in "The Empty House," Holmes states "'Journeys end in lovers meetings,' as the old play says," from Act II, Scene 3.<br /><br />The reason the date was chosen is that in Christianity, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6">January 6th</a> is the Feast of the Epiphany, or officially the twelfth day of Christmas. I suppose if we were being truly technical about it, the twelfth night of Christmas would fall on January 5th...<br /><br />In addition, William S. Baring-Gould in his <a href="https://amzn.to/2QrZ4G3"><i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, posited that because Holmes was a little cranky on the morning of January 7th - the date on which <i>The Valley of Fear</i> began - he had a hangover, induced by birthday celebrations the evening prior.<br /><div><br /></div><div>And why 167? In 2017, we added <a href="http://sherlockholmespodcast.com/">Trifles</a> to our lineup. And in the last few months, we began occasional live broadcasts of some of our shows.<br /> <br /> That is to say, we've experimented with frequency, format and style. Which is why it's thrilling to see Sherlockian colleagues who take up the mantle and begin experimenting as well.<br /> <br /> In this case, the <a href="http://bakerstreetirregulars.com/">Baker Street Irregulars</a> are trying something new: a video podcast called The Fortnightly Dispatch, available through the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCB6PxUy_wZF5mWqE4bMNAlA">Baker Street Journal YouTube channel</a>.<br /> <br /> The <a href="https://youtu.be/5M8sWGzllUc">first episode</a> dropped yesterday, featuring a chat between BSJ publisher and host Steven Doyle, BSI ("The <i>Western Morning News</i>") and Ray Betzner, BSI ("The Agony Column"), proprietor of the <a href="http://www.vincentstarrett.com/">Studies In Starrett</a> blog.<br /> <br /> In his introductory remarks, Steve said:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "The idea for this podcast came out of the desire in these socially isolated times to connect with fellow Sherlockians. After all, our hobby thrives most when we are connecting with our friends. And while we can watch the movies, read the stories and share messages on Facebook, really to talk and connect and have that kind of interaction with our fellow Sherlockians is vital.<br /> <br /> "And so that's what this is about — reaching out and connecting with people across the country and around the world. We're going to be talking to people about a variety of subjects: books they've written or read, places they've gone, things they've done in the past or are planning to in the future. And we really want to connect we have the scion societies across the country as well.<br /> <br /> "That relationship between the BSI and science societies is important. And let's face it the scion societies are where all the daily Sherlockian life happens, apart from annual events on the calendar. So we going to be reaching out and talking to people at local scion societies and what they're up to." </blockquote> <div> <br /></div> <h3> <b>How is this different from I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere?</b></h3> We initially wondered that ourselves. It turns out there are a few distinctions.<br /> <br /> The most obvious fact is that the Fortnightly Dispatch is a video podcast, while <a href="http://ihose.co/ihoseshows">I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</a> has been largely an audio program.<br /> <br /> In addition, I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere tends to be topical — it's designed to allow the listener to do something as a result: read a book, see a show, buy a product — and it covers what's currently happening in the world of Sherlock Holmes.<br /> <br /> The Fortnightly Dispatch is designed to be timeless and something of a shared history. They'll be sharing stories and the history of people and organizations in our hobby. New Sherlockians may not be aware of the rich and interesting history, and this is a way to build a base of knowledge for them.<br /> <br /> The focus on local scion societies is an interesting angle. For years, the <i><a href="http://ihose.co/BSJ">Baker Street Journal</a></i> carried a section called "The Scion Societies" — a section dedicated to reports from the meetings. However, if you read them, they all followed the same format: so-and-so gave a toast, we ate, people gave papers, someone won a quiz, etc. Neither terribly interesting nor unique.<br /> <br /> But it did create a way for all of the local Sherlockian societies to connect with the BSI and with wider readership. While "scion" status doesn't grant a society anything other than a nice certificate, it does seem to be important to connect our interest to local groups. And creating more awareness and interest in a library of episodes is a unique way to build on that.<br /> <br /> While Burt Wolder and Scott Monty are both members of the BSI, I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere is not strictly a BSI production. (<i>You do subscribe to us and like us there, right?</i>)<br /> <br /> After a few technical glitches, things got moving, and we were into our natural rhythm. During the first half of the show, we threw out a few of our ideas as to who were some of the characters in the Sherlock Holmes stories who faced <a href="http://ihose.co/trifles169" target="_blank">Loneliness and Isolation</a>.<br /> <br /> In the second half, we opened up the discussion to commenters and viewers, who were very kind, patient and encouraging. And they had some of the best suggestions!<br /> <br /> Little did we know that the streaming interface we were using to broadcast to both channels also allowed us to see the aggregated comments in one place (we were desperately going back and forth to Facebook and YouTube from our interface).<br /> <br /> Nevertheless, the effect of hosts and viewers coming together was a most rewarding one.<br /> <br /> We downloaded the original live video, took out the unnecessary fumbling, and added some graphics. Just like they do at NPR.<br /> <br /> But since "the world went all awry," we thought we might shake things up a bit.<br /> <br /> There's been a rise in people working from home and there have been shelter-in-place notices in many places across the country and the world, thanks to the spread of COVID-19.
