It's hard to believe that one of the most influential impersonators of Sherlock Holmes has been gone 30 years.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;" /><span face="Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #0e0e0e; font-size: 14px;">Many have hailed Brett as the definitive Sherlock Holmes, although it can be argued that each generation has its own definitive Holmes. Watson alongside Brett in the series, this book is a comprehensive review of Brett's career on stage and screen. It contains hundreds of rarely seen and some exclusive photographs with the kind permission of the Brett family, Granada Studios and many others. I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere podcast as Sherlockian talk radio in 2007, recognizing that Sherlockians have enjoyed audio content related to the great detective since at least the 1930s. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Meiser#Writing_career" target="_blank">Edith Meiser</a>, who was featured in the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2023/02/07/bsj-2022-christmas-annual/" target="_blank">2022 BSJ Christmas Annual</a>, wrote many scripts for <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i> on radio in the 1930s, including the very first episode that starred William Gillette.</div><div><br /></div><div>Meiser would later go on to write <i>The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i> for Basil Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons.<br /><br />Of all of the quotes in the Canon, William Shakespeare was the most oft-quoted author. There is but one Shakespearean play that Holmes quotes twice: <i><a href="https://amzn.to/37GCVtA">Twelfth Night</a></i>. In <i>The Sign of the Four</i>, Holmes concludes, "All is well that ends well." This is from from Act IV, Scene 4. And in "The Empty House," Holmes states "'Journeys end in lovers meetings,' as the old play says," from Act II, Scene 3.<br /><br />The reason the date was chosen is that in Christianity, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6">January 6th</a> is the Feast of the Epiphany, or officially the twelfth day of Christmas. I suppose if we were being truly technical about it, the twelfth night of Christmas would fall on <b>January 5th</b>...<br /><br />In addition, William S. Baring-Gould in his <a href="https://amzn.to/2QrZ4G3"><i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, posited that because Holmes was a little cranky on the morning of January 7th — the date on which <i>The Valley of Fear</i> began — he had a hangover, induced by birthday celebrations the evening prior.<br /><div><br /></div><div>And why 171? I believe he is well up in anatomy, and he is a first-class chemist; but, as far as I know, he has never taken out any systematic medical classes. His studies are very desultory and eccentric, but he has amassed a lot of out-of-the way knowledge which would astonish his professors.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">From the very beginning, we were meant to believe that Sherlock Holmes was an expert chemist. Cringy, even.</p><p><br /></p><p>But it set the stage for what was to come, not only in nearly <a href="https://ihose.co/ihoseshows" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">300 episodes since then</a>, but in our companion show <b><i><a href="https://www.episodes.fm/1198869691" target="_blank">Trifles</a></i></b> and in numerous other Sherlock Holmes podcasts started by other passionate Sherlockians.</p><p>In Episode 289 of IHOSE, our special correspondent Madeline Quiñones will begin a segment called "A Chance of Listening," a series of short assessments of many of these Sherlock Holmes podcasts that have sprouted up since those early days of 2007. Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons.<br /><br />Of all of the quotes in the Canon, William Shakespeare was the most oft-quoted author. There is but one Shakespearean play that Holmes quotes twice: <i><a href="https://amzn.to/37GCVtA">Twelfth Night</a></i>. In <i>The Sign of the Four</i>, Holmes concludes, "All is well that ends well." This is from from Act IV, Scene 4. And in "The Empty House," Holmes states "'Journeys end in lovers meetings,' as the old play says," from Act II, Scene 3.<br /><br />The reason the date was chosen is that in Christianity, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6">January 6th</a> is the Feast of the Epiphany, or officially the twelfth day of Christmas. I suppose if we were being truly technical about it, the twelfth night of Christmas would fall on January 5th...<br /><br />In addition, William S. Baring-Gould in his <a href="https://amzn.to/2QrZ4G3"><i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, posited that because Holmes was a little cranky on the morning of January 7th — the date on which <i>The Valley of Fear</i> began — he had a hangover, induced by birthday celebrations the evening prior.<br /><div><br /></div><div>And why 170?
