But even so, Holmes knew that if he <i>did</i> survive, he had the best publicity man in the world who could tell his story: John Watson guarded the legacy of Sherlock Holmes.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">When "The Final Problem" reached the reading public, Watson wrapped it up with one of the highest compliments he could pay to his friend and colleague, calling him "the best and the wisest man whom I have ever known."</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">High praise indeed not just on the weight of its own, but because it is an echo of another bit of praise. In the final paragraph of <i>Phaedo</i>, Plato said the following about the death of Socrates:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">"Such was the end, Echecrates, of our friend, who was, as we may say, of all those of his time whom we have ever known, the best and wisest and most righteous man."</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; "The Norwood Builder" featured Jonas Oldacre, who made solicitor John Hector McFarlane his sole beneficiary.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><h4 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Legal contract</h4><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In which story do we find an owner of a house restricted from removing any items in the house upon its sale? Mrs. Maberley unknowingly had an exposé in her possession that revealed the perfidy of Isadora Klein in "The Three Gables."</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><h4 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Trial by jury</h4><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In which story did Holmes, acting as judge and Watson, acting as jury, come to the verdict of "not guilty"? When Captain Croker told his story about the death of Sir Eustace Brackenstall in "The Abbey Grange," Holmes took the law into his own hand.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><h4 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Litigation</h4><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Can you name a cantankerous old litigant, described comically by Watson as "an elderly red-faced choleric crank whose passion is the British law, and who is said to have no less than seven lawsuits upon his hands at present?"
