Based on <a href="https://amzn.to/455I6TQ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Andrew Lane's <i>Young Sherlock Holmes</i> book series</a>, this new version is grittier, irreverent, and action-packed. </p><p>Not to be confused with the Oscar nominated <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3YAun3H" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Young Sherlock Holmes</a></i> directed by Chris Columbus that debuted 40 years ago, we find Holmes at university rather than at public school, and in this origin story, rather than an early meeting of Holmes and Watson, we have an early meeting of Holmes and Moriarty. </p><p>The plot summary, from the official description:</p><blockquote><p>"Sherlock Holmes is a disgraced young man – raw and unfiltered – when he finds himself wrapped up in a murder case that threatens his liberty. His first ever case unravels a globe-trotting conspiracy that changes his life forever. Unfolding in 1870s Oxford and adventuring abroad, the series will expose the early antics of the anarchic adolescent who is yet to evolve into Baker Street's most renowned resident."</p></blockquote><p>The series stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Sherlock Holmes, Dónal Finn as James Moriarty, with Zine Tseng, Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Max Irons, and Colin Firth. </p><p>The trailer, released by Prime Video, was released today. <a href="https://youtu.be/R-NEi8tRC8Q?si=iTMP4_KM1riABWFi" target="_blank">Watch it here</a>:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="361" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/R-NEi8tRC8Q" width="615" youtube-src-id="R-NEi8tRC8Q"></iframe></div><br /><p>Don't expect too much faithfulness to the Canon — partly because this is all speculation and fantasy, and also because it's Guy Ritchie. He forges his own path.</p><p>However, the scenes will be lavish (likely with an assist from CGI making up shots of 1870s Oxford), the humor will be blunt, and the action scenes will be... quite action-packed.</p><p>The series premieres on March 4, 2026.</p><p><br /></p>

We had previously heard Matt Berry as the voice of Sherlock in Season 1, although that was a hallucination. </p><p>In case you hadn't watched Season 1, which began airing its 13 episodes in January 2025... the show features Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut), having survived the Reichenbach Fall and mourning the loss of Sherlock Holmes, setting up a clinic in Pittsburgh to treat strange and rare medical conditions. </p><p>He works with four younger doctors: twin brothers Stephens and Adam Croft (both Peter Mark Kendall), the deceitful Ingrid Derian (Eve Harlow), and the overly-aiming-to-please Sasha Lubbock (Inga Schlingmann). Helping Watson run the clinic is Shinwell Johnson (Ritchie Coster), the only one who knew Holmes, and in charge of the hospital is Watson's ex-wife Mary Morstan (Rochelle Aytes). Her mother, suffering from dementia, is the patient in tonight's episode. </p><p>Familiar characters who have appeared in the first season include Moriarty (Randall Park), Irene Adler (Whoopie Van Raam), and Mycroft Holmes (Vincent Gale). The show was created by Craig Sweeny, who was an executive producer and writer on <i>Elementary</i>. These are not rare—they are one of a kind.</p><p>Al Gregory is offering four letters written by King Charles III, between 2013 and 2016, when he was still the Prince of Wales. In 2010, the Express credited him as appearing <a href="http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/health/182273/Motor-neurone-disease-made-Joss-Ackland-and-his-wife-live-life-to-the-full" target="_blank">in more plays than any other living actor</a>.<br /> <br /> Born in London in 1928, he was trained at the Central School of Speech and drama and made his debut in 1945 in "The Hasty Heart." His first film was the thriller <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042949?ref_=nmbio_mbio" style="font-style: italic;">Seven Days to Noon</a> (1950), but he was uncredited; he made his credited debut in a supporting role in <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044656?ref_=nmbio_mbio"><i>Ghost Ship</i></a> (1952). Ackland spent the late 1940s through the first half of the 1950s in regional theatrical companies, where he worked on his craft.<br /> <br /> In 1955, he left the stage and managed a tea plantation in Africa for two years, where he also served as a disc jockey and wrote plays. In 1957, he returned to England and joined the Old Vic theatre company and managed the Mermaid Theatre from 1962-1964. At this time, he established his prominence on the stage with many performances in London's West End, including Captain Hook in "Peter Pan," Juan Peron in "Evita," and Falstaff in "Henry IV Parts 1 and 2."<br /> <br /> During that time, he also began a run as a memorable character actor in films and television. He had roles in widely distributed films with great box office success such as <i>The Hunt for Red October</i>, <i>Lethal Weapon 2</i> ("<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOBXH-5QrGU" target="_blank">Diplomatic immunity!</a>") and <i>The Mighty Ducks</i>.<br /> <br /> He made his first Sherlock Holmes-connected appearance as The Hon. Philip Green in "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax" opposite Douglas Wilmer in the BBC's <i><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0163492/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_179" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes</a></i>.<br /> <br /> He also played the president in John Cleese’s disastrous parody, <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Strange_Case_of_the_End_of_Civilization_as_We_Know_It" target="_blank">The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know It</a></i>, in which Cleese played the grandson of Sherlock Holmes. In "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0687038/?ref_=ttep_ep13" target="_blank">The Mystery of the Amber Beads</a>," an episode of the BBC series <i>The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes</i>, based on the anthologies edited by Hugh Greene, Ackland played Grubber.<br /> <br /> Ackland joined Christopher Lee and Patrick McNee in 1992 to play King Edward in <i><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102115/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_64" target="_blank">Incident at Victoria Falls</a></i>. In that role, he sent a ready-to-retire Sherlock Holmes on a mission to South Africa to recover the Star of Africa diamond.<br /> <br /> But we remember him most vividly and fondly for his turn as Jephro Rucastle in "The Copper Beeches" from Granada's <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>. He would become known professionally as Jeremy Brett.</p><p>He came from an upper-class background — his father was an Army officer and his mother was from the Cadbury confectionary dynasty. Brett would go on to attend Eton, where he was a member of the choir and excelled at singing.</p><p>This singing would prove to be helpful as he took on one of his most significant and memorable film roles: Freddy Eynsford-Hill in <i>My Fair Lady</i> (1964). In it, he was reunited with Audrey Hepburn, who also starred in Brett's first film, <i>War and Peace</i> (1956). It is a period setting with a female Sherlock Holmes. This was an interesting take with a female Holmes and a male Watson sharing digs at 221B. This program, <i><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7755494/" target="_blank">Miss Sherlock</a></i>, was created in 2018 and with it came with a female Sherlock and a female Dr. Wato-san, set in modern-day Tokyo. <br /><br /><center><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/V0FIUz5OpT4" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></center> <br /> <br /> <br /> Unless you speak Japanese, you might need a bigger screen to read the subtitles. The subtitles will not concern you because your eyes will already be riveted to the screen. Smart scripts and clean direction keep the action moving. <br /> <br /> <br /> You will recognize the stories, but just as you recognize one and think about the original tale, it will unfold in unexpected ways. The writing is very good, the visual impact of every scene is so well done. <br /> <br /> <br /> Sherlock and Wato-san rent an apartment from Kimi Hatano, in a house that looks like a Victorian throwback in the midst of a Tokyo neighborhood. Their digs are cluttered with what you would expect from Sherlock. All of the places and homes they visit are the expected minimalist, which provides a stark contrast. There are chemical experiments there too, but one of the results is a cucumber-based beauty cream. <br /> <br /> <br /> Sara "Sherlock" Shelly Futaba is every bit the genius detective, playing the most intense version of the Master. She is a fashionista, solving each crime in catwalk-ready but practical outfits and chasing down leads in stiletto heels. She is ruthless and unfeeling in her pursuit of the truth. Her instrument is the cello, which she plays flawlessly. The dressing gown has been replaced by delightful pajamas. She is superbly played by Yūko Takeuchi. <br /><br /> Dr. Wato ("Wato-san") has been a surgeon in Syria with PTSD who is now trying to find herself and romance. Sherlock is completely offended by her sense of fashion. She is definitely the long-suffering type, well portrayed by Shihori Kanjiya. <br /><br /> This version of the landlady is Kimi Hatano who is played by Ran Ito. Wato-san cooks traditional meals in her kitchen. She adds a lot to the ladies' lives, and is involved more than Mrs. Hudson was in the Canon. <br /><br /> Season 1 of <i>Miss Sherlock</i> contains 8 episodes. During the season we see their relationship evolve as their partnership grows. However, both are still insisting they are not friends.</div><div>  <br />The style of these episodes, and the stories, compare favorably to BBC's <i>Sherlock</i>. Although it is hard to do a side-by-side comparison, I found <i>Miss Sherlock</i> to be more riveting, with better stories, and less impressed with itself. <br /> <br /> <br /> Familiar characters abound, with their own modern and Japanese take. Among them, you will meet irresistible versions of Mycroft and Lestrade. It's like the familiar faces Dorothy saw when she woke up after the tornado in the scene from "The Wizard of Oz". They all seem so well cast, and make you happy to recognize them. As with the plots, there will be twists in the lineup.</div><div>  <br />When you can, give this smart, great, modern interpretation of Sherlock Holmes and his <br /> world a try. Unless you speak Japanese, be sure to watch when you can focus on the screen. <br /><br /> The English subtitles of this Japanese program remind of a story from the attempts at language translation during the Cold War, which may be apocryphal. Scientists had a computer translate "the spirit was willing, but the flesh was weak” to Russian, then translated the result from Russian back to English to the phrase “the vodka was good, but the meat was rotten.” </div><div><br /></div><div>In the case of <i>Miss Sherlock</i>, the results are astonishingly good. "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" translates to Japanese and back as "Eliminate the impossible…and you are left with the unlikely truth". <br /><br /></div><div> As of this writing, HBO has not responded to my question about Season 2 of <i>Miss Sherlock</i>. Even if there were one planned, it would have to be recast, due to the untimely death of Yûko Takeuchi, who played Sherlock, in September 2020.<br /><br /></div><div><i>Miss Sherlock</i> is available on HBO Max, HBO Asia, and Hulu Japan. He began his career in entertainment first as an actor, then as a stage manager, advertising agent, and for an artistic agency before joining the ranks of Granada Television in 1960. He literally worked his way up, beginning as a bus driver and handyman before being given responsibility for local programs and archival material.</p><p>He was tapped as an assistant director for <i>Coronation Street</i> in 1965 before joining other shows in the following years, such as <i>Mr. Rose</i> and <i>Pardon the Expression</i>. His fledgling experience as a producer began in 1968 with a couple of episodes of Coronation Street, followed by a proper producing career in 1972 with <i>A Family at Wa</i>r and <i>Holly</i>. </p><p>The Sherlock Holmes connection began in 1981, when Cox realized that Granada, which already had a commitment to dramatizations of classics from the likes of H.G. Wells, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, and Evelyn Waugh, should turn its attention to Sherlock Holmes.</p><p>According to the definitive biography of Cox by <a href="https://www.arthur-conan-doyle.com/index.php?title=Michael_Cox" target="_blank">The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia</a>,</p><blockquote><p>"Cox is really the father of the Sherlock Holmes series. Without him, it would not have existed. Indeed, it was he who, a fine connoisseur and fervent admirer of Arthur Conan Doyle, realized that Sherlock Holmes' stories had finally fallen into the public domain and that the great detective had hardly been seen on television screens for ten years. He was the one who convinced Granada's management that it was possible to achieve a great success by producing a colour version of Sherlock Holmes' adventures for a new generation of spectators."</p></blockquote><p>While the accountants were looking to cut expenses in any way, Cox realized the value for the Granada brand that classics afforded them. While they were never huge ratings successes, these lavishly produced dramas brought the studio respect in the domestic market and exposure on public television in the United States.</p><p>David Plowright, managing director (and Michael's boss) at Granada Television, gave Cox two conditions on which he would green-light the production: there had to be a financial commitment from an American partner before production began, and they needed someone of star quality — "Someone like Jeremy Brett," he said.</p><p>As they listed their criteria, the casting directors determined that they were unable to find "someone like Jeremy Brett" to fill the role—they could only find Jeremy Brett himself! So that was settled. As to the U.S. partner turned another lovely coincidence is that PBS's popular <i>MYSTERY!</i> series was produced by Joan Wilson, who just happened to be Jeremy Brett's wife.</p><p>In bringing the series to life, David Plowright provided another bit of inspiring leadership: he suggested that a full-scale replica of Baker Street be constructed as an exterior set. This iconic thoroughfare lent a great deal of realism and credibility to the Granada series over time, and is as essential and iconic as Brett himself in the title role.</p><p>The other piece of preparation that Michael Cox introduced to the production, along with associate producer Stuart Doughty and researcher Nick Cooney, was <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Baker-Street-File-Appearance-Television/dp/1553100387/ref=sr_1_1?crid=31CR84R4A1QCK&dchild=1&keywords=the+baker+street+file+michael+cox&qid=1613057657&sprefix=The+Baker+Street+File%2Caps%2C192&sr=8-1" target="_blank">The Baker Street File</a></i>. Now a collector's item, it was described as "A guide to the appearance and habits of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson specially prepared for the Granada Television series <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>." There were 100 copies published in 1983 for the cast and crew of the series — photocopied typed sheets between manilla card stock. Then in 1997, Calabash Press published a paperback version. Music—such an important part of Sherlock Holmes's personality—had to be commissioned, and <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/01/remembering-composer-patrick-gowers.html" target="_blank">Patrick Gowers</a> composed the main theme and incidental music, including period- and geography-specific pieces that were variations of the original.</p><p>The series finally debuted on ITV in England in April 1984. </p><p>Cox remained attached to the production for its entirety, through <i>The Case-book of Sherlock Holmes</i> in 1991. By that time, Cox was engaged as an independent producer (Granada had cut costs and eliminated a number of executive positions; by 1992, Plowright was outsted as CEO) and Jeremy Brett's health was in a precipitous decline.
