There are plenty of instances of animal flesh on the side-board at 221B Baker Street, whether it's a couple of brace of grouse, Henry Baker's Christmas goose, or a joint of beef.<br />
<br />
But when it comes to vegetables, we don't hear quite so much. Yes, the parsley sank into the butter, but that was at the Abergavenny household.<br />
<br />
However, there are clues to the consumption of vegetables in and around London. For example, in "The Man with the Twisted Lip," Holmes and Watson were on the road early and saw evidence of activity:<br />

"A few country carts were stirring, bearing in vegetables to the metropolis."</blockquote>
And in "The Beryl Coronet," there was a romance brewing between Francis Prosper and the maid of the Holder household:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Oh, yes! he is the green-grocer who brings our vegetables round. His name is Francis Prosper."</blockquote>
The presence of a green-grocer meant that the family had fresh fruits and vegetables delivered to the house on a regular basis.<br />
<br />
But other than the landlady babbling "of green peas at seven-thirty," [3STU] no other greens warranted specific mention as part of a meal.<br />
<br />
On <a href="https://www.sherlockholmespodcast.com/2020/04/episode-172-mystery-of-watsons-second.html">Trifles</a>, we had an opportunity to talk about vegetarians in Victorian England, the connection between the Sherlock Holmes stories and vegetarian restaurants, as well as the few mentions of vegetables in the Canon:<br />

We've been podcasting since 2007, when we began recording I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere two years after we began writing the Baker Street Blog (which <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/08/i-hear-of-sherlock-everywhere-is.html#.XsNoLGhKjb1">merged into IHOSE in 2013</a>). In 2017, we added <a href="http://sherlockholmespodcast.com/">Trifles</a> to our lineup. And in the last few months, we began occasional live broadcasts of some of our shows.<br />
<br />
That is to say, we've experimented with frequency, format and style. Which is why it's thrilling to see Sherlockian colleagues who take up the mantle and begin experimenting as well.<br />
<br />
In this case, the <a href="http://bakerstreetirregulars.com/">Baker Street Irregulars</a> are trying something new: a video podcast called The Fortnightly Dispatch, available through the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCB6PxUy_wZF5mWqE4bMNAlA">Baker Street Journal YouTube channel</a>.<br />
<br />
The <a href="https://youtu.be/5M8sWGzllUc">first episode</a> dropped yesterday, featuring a chat between BSJ publisher and host Steven Doyle, BSI ("The <i>Western Morning News</i>") and Ray Betzner, BSI ("The Agony Column"), proprietor of the <a href="http://www.vincentstarrett.com/">Studies In Starrett</a> blog.<br />
<br />
In his introductory remarks, Steve said:<br />

"The idea for this podcast came out of the desire in these socially isolated times to connect with fellow Sherlockians. After all, our hobby thrives most when we are connecting with our friends. And while we can watch the movies, read the stories and share messages on Facebook, really to talk and connect and have that kind of interaction with our fellow Sherlockians is vital.<br />
<br />
"And so that's what this is about — reaching out and connecting with people across the country and around the world. We're going to be talking to people about a variety of subjects: books they've written or read, places they've gone, things they've done in the past or are planning to in the future. And we really want to connect we have the scion societies across the country as well.<br />
<br />
"That relationship between the BSI and science societies is important. And let's face it the scion societies are where all the daily Sherlockian life happens, apart from annual events on the calendar. So we going to be reaching out and talking to people at local scion societies and what they're up to." </blockquote>

<b>How is this different from I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere?</b></h3>
We initially wondered that ourselves. It turns out there are a few distinctions.<br />
<br />
The most obvious fact is that the Fortnightly Dispatch is a video podcast, while <a href="http://ihose.co/ihoseshows">I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</a> has been largely an audio program.<br />
<br />
In addition, I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere tends to be topical — it's designed to allow the listener to do something as a result: read a book, see a show, buy a product — and it covers what's currently happening in the world of Sherlock Holmes.<br />
<br />
The Fortnightly Dispatch is designed to be timeless and something of a shared history. They'll be sharing stories and the history of people and organizations in our hobby. New Sherlockians may not be aware of the rich and interesting history, and this is a way to build a base of knowledge for them.<br />
<br />
The focus on local scion societies is an interesting angle. For years, the <i><a href="http://ihose.co/BSJ">Baker Street Journal</a></i> carried a section called "The Scion Societies" — a section dedicated to reports from the meetings. However, if you read them, they all followed the same format: so-and-so gave a toast, we ate, people gave papers, someone won a quiz, etc. Neither terribly interesting nor unique.<br />
<br />
But it did create a way for all of the local Sherlockian societies to connect with the BSI and with wider readership. While "scion" status doesn't grant a society anything other than a nice certificate, it does seem to be important to connect our interest to local groups. And creating more awareness and interest in a library of episodes is a unique way to build on that.<br />
<br />
While Burt Wolder and Scott Monty are both members of the BSI, I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere is not strictly a BSI production. While we feature many BSI publications, authors and members, we don't exist to promote the organization or its history; that's a by-product of what we do.<br />

One of the most commonly debated topics in the Sherlock Holmes canon is Dr. Watson's wound. When we first meet him in <i>A Study in Scarlet,</i> Watson tells us about his war injury, his subsequent convalescence, his arrival in London, his spending habits that outstripped his wound pension, which in turn led to his rooming with Sherlock Holmes.<br />
<br />
And thus was born one of the great literary duos of history. All because of Watson's injury.<br />
<br />
In that first appearance Watson tells us that it was his shoulder that took the bullet; Sherlock Holmes's observation makes it clear:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"His left arm has been injured. He holds it in a stiff and unnatural manner."</blockquote>
But in the very next story, <i>The Sign of Four</i>, Watson claims his leg has sustained the injury:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I made no remark, however, but sat nursing my wounded leg. I had a Jezail bullet through it some time before..."</blockquote>
Is Watson trying to throw us off the scent? Perhaps he intentionally misleads us in order to create confusion. Could it be that he is also attempting to cloud the enquiries of the British Army, which might be interested to know about Watson's wound as it relates to the pension he receives?<br />
<br />
If the army discovered that Watson's wound(s) was/were more—shall we say 'delicate'?—than he initially indicated, they might have revoked his pension.<br />
<br />
On <a href="https://www.sherlockholmespodcast.com/2020/04/episode-172-mystery-of-watsons-second.html">Trifles</a>, we discussed a couple of competing theories, one of which had a very original and creative solution to the mystery of the two wounds:<br />

Actor and comedian <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0929609/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0">Fred Willard</a> passed away at the age of 86, due to natural causes.<br />
<br />
Willard first gained attention with Martin Mull in the satirical talk show <i>Fernwood Tonight</i> in 1977, and later guest starred on many popular television shows, including recurring roles on <i>Everybody Loves Raymond</i>, <i>Mad About You</i>, and <i>Modern Family</i>. Anywhere he appeared, you could guarantee a laugh.<br />
<br />
At the time of his death, his final project, <i><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9612516/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_1">Space Force</a></i>, was in post-production.<br />
<br />
But he was probably best known in the last twenty years for playing clueless but hilarious individuals in a series of mockumentary films, including <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3dQ2kUD">Waiting for Guffman</a></i>, <a href="https://amzn.to/3dW3jTp"><i>Best in Show</i></a>, <a href="https://amzn.to/2WEx3ya"><i>A Mighty Wind</i></a>, and <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3cHNAam">For Your Consideration</a></i>.<br />
<br />
<br />
His connection to the world of Sherlock Holmes is a little more tenuous, but we picked up on a couple of instances in his mockumentaries.<br />
<br />
The first is from the image above, taken from <i>For Your Consideration</i>. In this film, Willard played a Chuck, a host of a news entertainment show, along with Jane Lynch as his co-host, Cindy.<br />

We've seen occasional confusion in the Sherlock Holmes stories, such as the changing dates in "The Red-Headed League" (from April to October) and Watson's wife calling him James instead of John.<br />
<br />
So it's interesting that there was a spelling error in "The Cardboard Box" that helped Holmes narrow down the identity of the culprit.<br />
<br />
The box was addressed to "Miss S. Cushing, Cross Street, Croydon." Holmes makes the following observations about the writing:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Done with a broadpointed pen, probably a J, and with very inferior ink. The word ‘Croydon’ has been originally spelled with an ‘i’, which has been changed to ‘y’." </blockquote>
<br />
He then concludes:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"The parcel was directed, then, by a man—the printing is distinctly masculine—of limited education and unacquainted with the town of Croydon."</blockquote>
Without the spelling error, where would that have left us?<br />
<br />
The handwriting would have still shown whatever "masculine" qualities Holmes saw in it. Would a properly-spelled "Croydon" have eliminated his conclusion about the man's education, though?<br />
<br />
Or was it the handwriting itself, absent the spelling error, that gave Holmes the impression that the man was not highly educated?<br />
<br />
We can draw our own conclusions about the state of affairs at Baker Street Elementary...<br />
