We talk about the great animators and illustrators who shaped his style, from Chuck Jones and Tex Avery to the great Walt Kelly. And we wrap up with a look back at his first Baker Street Irregulars dinner, and the unusual story behind his investiture as “Dr. Grimesby Roylott.”

Our “Learned Societies” segment kicks off with Sherlockian society activities rounding out the second half of November. Then, it’s the latest edition of “Examining the Pictures,” with the film critic, journalist, and author Christian Monggaard, BSI, with his review of the fourth and final season of the BBC’s Sherlock series. Finally, the Canonical Couplet quiz will test your Sherlock Holmes knowledge, with a copy of "Is This a Joke, Mr. Holmes?" for the winner. It has all been done before, as Sherlock Holmes told Inspector Gregson in A Study in Scarlet. While he was referring to the a specific case in the annals of crime history, the inference was clear: human nature is constant.

The crimes reported to us by Dr. Watson are by their very nature worthy of stories, but they indicate how common and similar humans are throughout time, driven by many of what are known as the Seven Deadly Sins: wrath, greed, pride, sloth, envy, gluttony, and lust. These core vices make up the basic physical, emotional, and mental needs of humans, as expressed in the extreme.

The way these vices are manifested in the stories may seem outrageous enough to readers, but they hold true enough to not be completely shocking. That is, they would be recognizable to anyone, in any land.

The older man who is trying to make himself more vigorous for his object of desire, the con man who concocts a story to make a willing dupe that much more pliable, the heartbroken lover who seeks revenge, a man of honor who kills to defend the woman he loves... these are all examples from the Canon that we can imagine happening in our world today.

Sherlock Holmes agreed on this point, and even expressed it similarly to Watson in "A Case of Identity":

“My dear fellow,” said Sherlock Holmes as we sat on either side of the fire in his lodgings at Baker Street, “life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence. If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generations, and leading to the most outré results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable.”

Meanwhile, things are out of this world at Baker Street Elementary...

Baker Street Elementary follows the original adventures of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, as they and their friends work through the issues of elementary school in Victorian London. They will also need to have a proven record that supports that definition. No current judges or previous winners may be considered for the award. The award is not limited to members of the Baker Street Irregulars.

How Is Someone Nominated?

The award will be given based on nominations. The nominator should complete an essay of 750 words or fewer that answers this question: “Who do you believe should be recognized for their work in mentoring aspiring Sherlockians and why? Please provide specific examples of their guidance, encouragement, and welcoming spirit.”

Qualities to consider when nominating: Welcoming to all Sherlockians; looking out for new Sherlockians to join the ranks; encouraging involvement and guiding people through their participation; connecting new Sherlockians to current members of the BSI; believing in someone even if they don’t believe in themselves; leaving the organization better than when they joined it.

Should someone be nominated in one year and not win, they would need to be re-nominated for consideration in succeeding years.

Where Should Nominations Be Sent?

Nominations should be sent to ricementorshipaward@gmail.com. T. Rick Jones—author, veteran Actors’ Equity stage manager, former Managing Editor of Daily Star Trek News, and prolific contributor to Sherlock Holmes Magazine—brings a unique perspective to Sherlockiana.

We explore what happens when two fandoms meet, comparing the cultures of Star Trek and Sherlockiana, and then turn to the practical question of how the adventures of Sherlock Holmes could be brought effectively to the stage. With his experience in theater production, Rick offers insights into the challenges—and possibilities—of adapting Conan Doyle’s stories for live drama.

Our conversation also explores Rick’s writing about Arthur Conan Doyle and spiritualism, and how subjects that may seem distant from modern audiences can still be fascinating and relevant. He discusses his upcoming essay examining the intriguing connections between Shakespeare and Sherlock Holmes, as well as the wide range of interviews and essays he has produced for Sherlock Holmes Magazine. It’s a conversation about Holmes, theater, literature, fandom, and popular culture—and another reminder that there are always new ways to look at the Great Detective.

Our “Learned Societies” segment kicks off with Sherlockian society activities coming up in the first half of November. Finally, the Canonical Couplet quiz will test your Sherlock Holmes knowledge, with a copy of Mystery!: A Celebration. for the winner. He wasn't alone in this thinking; as the lone Vulcan on the Enterprise, Spock consistently reminded others that he was governed by logic and did not allow emotions to affect his judgment.

Nicholas Meyer, BSI (“A Fine Morocco Case”), author of The Seven Per-Cent Solution and director of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, previously made connections between Holmes and Spock, as the latter referenced "an ancestor of mine" when using the famous impossible/improbable quote.

More about Spock, Star Trek, and Meyer below.

Meanwhile, Bob Stek's novella, titled An Ancestor of Mine, was originally posted on AO3 (Archive of Our Own) and has been downloaded many hundreds of times. The plot is as follows:

Can Professor Moriarty blackmail Sherlock Holmes? He has evidence that the examination of a cosmic string by Star Trek’s Mr. Spock went horribly awry, and stranded him in Victorian England. In his new home, a surprise onset of Pon Farr leads to an encounter with a Wold Newton descendant — Violet Rutherford, a progressive English adventuress with eclectic interests and friends. Their relationship stretches the Prime Directive to the breaking point and leads to the birth of both Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes.

It could explain so much. Logic in the blood is liable to take the strangest forms.

Bob has kindly agreed to have the volume published on I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere, so we include it here:

She joined the BBC as a director in 1965, working across single-play strands including 30 Minute Theater and Sunday Afternoon Theatre, then went freelance in 1969, directing for the BBC, Anglia, and Yorkshire television as well as Granada — work that included the Emmy-nominated Heidi (1974) and long stretches on Coronation Street and Crown Court.

From 1976 she worked almost exclusively for Granada, producing dark and supernatural drama Shades of Darkness among it — and the Victorian-set Cribb series. It was against that backdrop that she made the recommendation for which Sherlockians can be the most grateful: she suggested Jeremy Brett for the title role in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. By her own account, she was not even particularly fond of Sherlock Holmes. She simply knew talent when she saw it — which, as Holmes himself might have observed, is a rarer gift than it sounds.

Guiding the Canon to the Screen

“A friendly native will surely guide us.” [CREE]

Wyndham Davies went on to produce The Return of Sherlock Holmes, taking over day-to-day running of the series when Michael Cox stepped back to his executive producing duties. When Cox resumed direct control for The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (1991), she returned to lead the two-hour feature films that followed — among them The Master Blackmailer (1992) — working with screenwriter Jeremy Paul to stretch thinner source material to feature length.

Her fiercest fight came with The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1994). Having initially been denied airtime, she fought for and won six one-hour episodes — then had to steer the production through Jeremy Brett's advancing illness, a circumstance that led to the decision in one episode to give Holmes this part to his brother Mycroft, rather than abandon the story. It was producing under the most difficult of circumstances, in service of a series she had helped propel.

A Career Beyond Baker Street

“Art in the blood is liable to take the strangest forms.” [GREE]

Holmes was only ever part of her output. In 1997 she won a BAFTA Cymru for Best Drama for August, a Welsh-set adaptation of Uncle Vanya, directed by its star Anthony Hopkins. She had previously received the Chicago International Film Festival's Silver Plaque for The Lady's Maid's Bell (1985). Along the way, she gave early opportunities to actors including Michael Caine, Hugh Grant, and Rhys Ifans — a reminder that her eye for talent was no one time accident of casting Brett, but a career-long habit.

The Granada series she helped shepherd to screen remains, for many, a fixed point in a changing age against which every subsequent Sherlock Holmes is measured. That debt is owed in no small part to a producer who knew a good thing the moment she saw it, and who spent the rest of her career proving it wasn't a fluke.

You can listen to an in-depth conversation with June Wyndham Davies, conducted by The Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast:
