Indeed, there is no recorded year in which a war has not taken place.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">As we look across the Sherlock Holmes stories chronologically, beginning with "The <i>Gloria Scott</i>," dated by various chronologists between 1872 and 1876, and ending with "His Last Bow" in 1914, we find that wars provide bookends for the Canon.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">From 1873–1875, the British were involved in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Ashanti_wars#Third_Anglo-Ashanti_War" target="_blank">Third Anglo-Ashanti War</a> in West Africa. And in 1914, as Holmes and Watson stood outside on the terrace, they contemplated what was the beginning of the Great War (later known as World War I).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And let's not forget that Watson himself was wounded during the Second Anglo-Afghan War at the Battle of Maiwand. Without war, we might never have learned of Sherlock Holmes.</div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Will human warfare ever cease? Sadly, that seems unlikely. But he was careful about collecting that data:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Circumstantial evidence is a very tricky thing,” answered Holmes thoughtfully. “It may seem to point very straight to one thing, but if you shift your own point of view a little, you may find it pointing in an equally uncompromising manner to something entirely different.” [BOSC]</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Yet he would allow Scotland Yard and the official police force to follow their own misguided attempts at capturing criminals from time to time, almost intentionally misleading them.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "Wisteria Lodge," he encouraged Inspector Baynes to “follow your path and I will follow mine,” and he allowed Lestrade to continue to pursue his theory of monomania in "The Six Napoleons." </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Why would he do this? For one, it allowed him an unfettered path to pursue his own inquiries. And for another, it kept them in his good graces, so they would continue to come to him for assistance.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In fact, our introduction to the official police in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> gives it away:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“My dear fellow, what does it matter to me. Supposing I unravel the whole matter, you may be sure that Gregson, Lestrade, and Co. will pocket all the credit. That comes of being an unofficial personage.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />“But he begs you to help him.”<br /><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Yes. We were 13 years past "The Cardboard Box," the final episode in the Granada Sherlock Holmes series, made popular in part by Jeremy Brett in the starring role. And it was three years before <i>Sherlock</i> with Benedict Cumberbatch would debut, and five years before <i>Elementary</i> with Jonny Lee Miller would make its first appearance. </div><div><br /></div><div>The talk of the town in 2007 was a potential movie project dreamt up by former Warner Bros. producer Lionel Wigram, who had been working on a concept for about 10 years. In March, Warner Bros. finally committed to the idea and the project was announced.</div><div><br /></div><div>But who would they seek to don the deerstalker in this iconic role? What Hollywood star would have the screen presence combined with an ability to draw box office audiences?</div><div><br /></div><div>Speculation had already surfaced on some entertainment news sites and discussion forums that Russell Crowe was a candidate. Many in the Sherlockian community wrinkled their noses at such a ridiculous miscasting. Crowe was hardly the right type for Holmes.</div><div><br /></div><div>Who might be a better candidate?</div><div><br /></div><div>We immediately thought back to 1985 and Nicholas Rowe in his appearance in <i>Young Sherlock Holmes</i>. But we were operating on the bleeding edge of things, and aside from a link at the bottom of the story alerting readers <a href="https://hoaxes.org/aprilfool/" target="_blank">to background info</a> and the date of the byline, there was nothing to indicate foul play was afoot.</div><div><br /></div><div>Well, the public ate it up and for a brief moment, <i>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</i> became a source for Hollywood news. </div><div><br /></div><div>We <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/04/had-fooled-us-3gar_2.html" target="_blank">came clean</a> the following day, revealing the hoax.</div><div><br /></div><div>And Robert Downey, Jr. went on to be selected to play the role in the Guy Richie-directed <i>Sherlock Holmes</i> (2009) and sequel <i>Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows</i> (2011), both of which were global box office smash hits, raking in over $500 million each.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Be careful what you read out there on April Fool's Day. In it, readers find out that the great detective was really the shape-changing Mystique. Destiny, another shape-shifter and her lover, was Irene Adler. </p><p>So what does this have to do with Holmesian heirs? Well, Chris Claremont, noted X-Men writer for many years, had originally <a href="https://www.cbr.com/x-men-rogue-mystique-father-destiny-mother/" target="_blank">planned to reveal</a> in the 1980s that Destiny and Mystique were Nightcrawler's parents. Which makes Nightcrawler, the furry blue teleporting mutant, Sherlock Holmes' son. </p><p>There's a family reunion I'd love to see. Maybe some of it will come out in the upcoming <i>X-Men: The Wedding Special</i>.
