I investigated the modernist composers who scored the Hammer films for a BBC Radio 4 documentary. </p><p>This score inhabits those dark realms: influenced by Universal horror scores of the 1930s and the jagged harmonies of 1950s Hammer. I've even included a homage to Hammer maestro James Bernard."</p></blockquote><p><br /></p><p><b>Mark Gatiss</b> stars as Sherlock Holmes with <b>Sanjeev Bhaskar</b> as Dr. Watson. According to <a href="http://www.davidstuartdavies.co.uk/sherlock-holmes">Davies' website</a>, the former premiered at Salisbury Playhouse in 1999 and won an award at the Edinburgh Festival that same year. But Ludwig is quick to note that it is respectful of the characters and of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.<br /> <br /> Questions naturally arose as the discussion continued: How does one represent such various settings as railway stations, Dartmoor, Baskerville Hall, the streets of London, etc. that are vastly different from the traditional "living room / sitting room" setting we're used to seeing in the theater? How is the hound brought to life? Besides the scheduled Fringe events the National Library of Scotland has the original manuscripts of <i>The Illustrious Client</i>, and Doyle’s first short ghost story <i>The Haunted Grange of Goresthorpe</i>, written possibly in 1877 or 1878, plus select ACD correspondence. Dan Clarkson, one of the authors, played Holmes, Watson, Moriarty and whoever-else-was-needed. His longtime partner, Jeff Turner, and Lizzie Wort, an old classmate of Dan’s from Bretton Hall, University of Leeds, also madly traded deerstalker, pipe and bowler as required as the three alternately played Holmes, Watson, Mrs. Hudson and also whoever-else-was-needed. The enthusiasm they brought to this comic re-telling of the Canon was infectious and the hammy asides Dan made to the audience created a warm rapport with young and old.<br /> <br /> <i>Potted Sherlock</i> follows the award winning <i>Potted Potter</i>, all seven Harry Potter books told in seventy minutes, which debuted in 2006, had five sold-out Fringe seasons, five sold-out London runs, extensive United Kingdom and international tours prior to its critically-acclaimed US premiere at the Little Shubert Theater in New York City in 2012. <i>Potted Sherlock</i> will be opening in London’s West End at Christmas time. Let us hope that the troupe brings their talent to NYC once again.<br /> <br /> <br /> I was fortunate enough to be able to interview the writers, Dan Clarkson and his brother Tom, after one of the performances. Before seeing the show and meeting them I was a bit cynical about how they came to write a comedic show about Holmes and Watson. The Harry Potter series, much loved as the stories are, was complete and <i>Potted Potter</i> had run its course. In fact, when they learned that I was a BSI member, they said they were nervous about hearing from a Sherlockian expert ("My blushes, Watson!"), asking if I thought they were being faithful to the stories. Dan told of reading the tales growing up and even arguing with a teacher that the most venomous snake in the world was the Indian swamp adder – Sherlock Holmes said it was so!<br /> <br /> The two of them wrote a few skits making fun of some of the inconsistencies (?!) in their favorite stories when Dan’s producer suggested doing all 60 stories in a Potted version. They welcomed the challenge and began researching and writing.They spent weeks re-watching the Granada Jeremy Brett series and Basil Rathbone movies and re-reading the stories.They also spent a day or two in Dartmoor to experience the gloomy atmosphere as they were writing the script. Despite the silliness inherent in the show, I think their love for Holmes and Watson comes through clearly.<br /> <br /> As popular and successful as <i>Potted Potter</i> was, I predict that <i>Potted Sherlock</i> will be even more popular.  If you are fortunate enough to be in London this Christmas season, do not miss it. Dietz's adaptation is a clever blending together of the major plots from <i>A Scandal in Bohemia</i> and <i>The Final Problem</i>, but unlike the Gillette script Dietz keeps the name of Irene Adler for the female lead character.<br /> <br /> <i>Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure </i>is at heart still a mystery/adventure story, but Dietz also incorporates elements of romance and humor involving the characters of Holmes and Watson, which are themes that are not typically as prominent in the Canon. Holmes is portrayed as somewhat of a smug, condescending character who enjoys a joke at Watson's expense. As for the Doctor, he comes across as a bit of a bumbling oaf. It doesn't ruin his character, but that aspect of the Watson persona is certainly played up more than is typical. The audience is also presented with an interesting perspective on Holmes' two rivals; the evil Moriarty and the beautiful Irene Adler. Each of them outwit Holmes in various ways, but yet the contrast between their characters is very striking.<br /> <br /> Steven Dietz does a fine job of marrying the quintessence of the Holmes and Watson characters with a few new characteristics resulting in a play which provides a couple of hours that are quite entertaining. Being the life-long Holmes fanatic I am, I boldly (foolishly?) volunteered to adapt the script for the Post-Meridian Radio Players. The major caveat was that I had to bring the script in under an hour.</span><br /> <br /> I didn't know what I was in for. <br /> <br /> First thing we did was transcribe a 1977 production done for the <a href="http://www.cbsrmt.com/">CBS Radio Mystery Theatre</a>. This was to be my starting point. If you've ever heard this version it's heavily abridged, with several major sequences and characters cut out. The dialog is also, for lack of a better word, paraphrased. <br /> <br /> To fix the paraphrasing problem we subsequently transcribed every scrap of dialog from the original novel into a basic radio script. <br /> <br /> With these two scripts in hand I set out to marry them together. My goals were as follows:<br /> <ul style="text-align: left;"> <li><span style="background-color: white;">To restore as much original Doyle dialog as possible. </span></li> <li><span style="background-color: white;">To restore the missing sequences of the cab-chase in London and the Laura Lyons character. </span></li> <li><span style="background-color: white;">Get it down under an hour. The producer told me, and I quote, "45 minutes would be best."</span></li> </ul> <br /> <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a>I worked on my script for the better part of a month during rehearsals for "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (I scored a small part in that show) and it came in at 46 manuscript pages. I thought I was in good shape, but the last step was the formatting. If you've ever done a radio script before they follow a standard manuscript format that allows you to estimate the length of your show with each page equaling a minute of performance time. I inserted my script into the template, let it format, and then counted the pages.<br /> <br /> When the script came in at 117 pages total, well. My response can't be repeated on this blog. <br /> <br /> I had three weeks to get the script into fighting shape before auditions, so I began frantically cutting. Every night I would go over the script looking for more that could be eliminated while keeping my original goals intact. The boy seen going out to the stone-huts? Gone. The crazy neighbor who spies one everyone with a telescope? Eliminated. Holmes' lengthy summation of the case in the final chapter? Condensed. Many scenes that were originally two became one. I honestly didn't think I'd make it. <br /> <br /> But I did, and I'd like to think I did Sir Arthur proud. <br /> <br /> <i><a href="http://www.huboftheuniverseproductions.com/events_srt12.html"><b>The Hound of the Baskervilles</b></a></i> opens this weekend (click through for more info), July 27th and 28th, at Responsible Grace at 204 Elm Street in Somerville, MA (just outside of Boston). So is finding a theatrical version of the Great Detective. But the combination of the two - a direct parody of the canon done for the stage? Sometimes, that can be a little bit trickier to find.<br /><br />However, there is hope - currently running in Croydon is a production of <a href="http://www.thestage.co.uk/reviews/review.php/31592/ha-ha-holmes-the-beast-of-the-blistervilles">Ha Ha Holmes - The Beast of the Blistervilles</a>, a very loose adaptation of one of the key novels in the canon. (Of course, Hound is no stranger to parody, having been made into a comedy by Peter Cook and Dudley Moore in the late 1970s, or even 1988's <span style="font-weight: bold;">Without A Clue</span>, my personal favorite of the Holmes comedies). This looks to be a great theatrical experience, especially for those Sherlockians who may be making a pilgrimage to the United Kingdom in the near future.<br /><br />Of course, as Watson suggests in "A Scandal in Bohemia", "<span style="font-style: italic;">The stage lost a fine actor, even as science lost an acute reasoner, when he became a specialist in crime."</span>.
