In the bible, the number 600 often signified strength and unity: Noah was 600 when he boarded the ark; Moses and the Israelites were pursued by 600 Egyptian chariots. Ancient armies organized in groups of 600 for optimal strategic effectiveness.</div><div><br /></div><div>In numerology, the number 600 is an "angel number," with the number six signifying unity and harmony, and the number zero signifying infinity. We take that as a sign that the comic strip, which just marked nine years here on the IHOSE site, is in harmony with us (and is evidently slated to remain with us forever). It's been a lovely collaboration.</div><div><br /></div><div>And it didn't escape our notice that 600 in Roman numerals is DC.</div><div><br /></div><div>Here's to those characters in the strips, as well as Steve, Joe, and Rusty, the creators of Baker Street Elementary...</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; When Sir Hugo Baskerville, "a most wild, profane, and godless man" finds that the girl he kidnapped has made her escape, we get a sense as to his temper tantrum:</div><div><blockquote><div>"Then, as it would seem, he became as one that hath a devil, for, rushing down the stairs into the dining-hall, he sprang upon the great table, flagons and trenchers flying before him, and he cried aloud before all the company that he would that very night render his body and soul to the Powers of Evil if he might but overtake the wench. And while the revellers stood aghast at the fury of the man, one more wicked or, it may be, more drunken than the rest, cried out that they should put the hounds upon her."</div></blockquote></div><div>One has to imagine such a fellow as employing a few choice invectives.</div><div><br /></div><div>And although there are no profanities—even the use of "bloody" is reserved for actual sanguinary events—there are a number of insults that are peddled. </div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes himself is the subject of many of these, usually uttered by frustrated antagonists. The initial Kickstarter for part one was wildly successful, and the Kickstarter for the sequel is under way. </p><p>The praise has been effusive: </p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>“A darn good romp” – Guillermo del Toro, Oscar-winning director</li><li>“Classic Sherlock Holmes! You can smell the chimney-smoke and feel the clatter of hooves. And so it is with the children of <a href="http://www.bakerstreetelementary.org/" target="_blank">Baker Street Elementary</a>.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It has now been 10 years since this Charles Schulz-inspired Sherlockian comic strip made its debut from the minds of Joe Fay, Rusty Mason, and Steve Mason. Here at <i>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</i>, we recognized the innocence and joy of Baker Street Elementary as a throwback to the Sunday comics of yore, and have featured this strip every other Sunday on this site for the past eight years (along with some related commentary).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Think of what a decade of Holmes and Watson together gave us: the two first met in early 1881 and their exploits included <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, <i>The Sign of Four</i>, the entire collection of <i>The Adventures</i> and <i>The Memoirs</i>, ending only with "death" of Sherlock Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls with Professor Moriarty.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Those tales meant we would encounter a clever female foil for Sherlock Holmes, a client with a severed digit, a scam targeted at a man with red hair, a snake as a murder weapon, short hair and a blue dress as a requirement for employment, a disappearing horse, a murderous pygmy, an travel-worn American set on vengeance, and a number of past acquaintances whose reappearance meant death.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">This was just the beginning of a 40-year journey. Will Baker Street Elementary have the same longevity? The type of wood mattered too; oak and ash were preferred for their mystical qualities.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Interestingly, in Bram Stoker's <i>Dracula</i>, the Count wasn't defeated with a stake through his heart. The implication at the end of the story is that Holmes is the boy's father. </p><p><br /></p><p>But the version I find most intriguing comes from comic books. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/comicsworthreading.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/immortal-x-men-8-scaled.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="520" height="800" src="https://i0.wp.com/comicsworthreading.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/immortal-x-men-8-scaled.jpg" width="520" /></a></div><p><i>Immortal X-Men</i> #8, out November 2022, was written by Kieron Gillen and illustrated by Michele Bandini, with cover (above) by Mark Brooks. In it, readers find out that the great detective was really the shape-changing Mystique. Destiny, another shape-shifter and her lover, was Irene Adler. </p><p>So what does this have to do with Holmesian heirs? Well, Chris Claremont, noted X-Men writer for many years, had originally <a href="https://www.cbr.com/x-men-rogue-mystique-father-destiny-mother/" target="_blank">planned to reveal</a> in the 1980s that Destiny and Mystique were Nightcrawler's parents. Which makes Nightcrawler, the furry blue teleporting mutant, Sherlock Holmes' son. </p><p>There's a family reunion I'd love to see. Maybe some of it will come out in the upcoming <i>X-Men: The Wedding Special</i>.
