This was of course in reference to this excerpt from the opening of "The Adventure of the Five Orange Pips": </div><div><blockquote><div>"The year ’87 furnished us with a long series of cases of greater or less interest, of which I retain the records. Among my headings under this one twelve months I find an account of the adventure of the Paradol Chamber, of the Amateur Mendicant Society, who held a luxurious club in the lower vault of a furniture warehouse, of the facts connected with the loss of the British barque “Sophy Anderson” of the singular adventures of the Grice Patersons in the island of Uffa..."</div></blockquote></div><div>While there was no island mentioned, Uffa did warrant two entries in the Encyclopedia Britannica:</div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>“Tradition tells that Uffa, who probably threw up the earthworks called the Castle Hill, established the capital of East Anglia at Thetford about 575.” </div></blockquote><blockquote><div>“According to tradition, Uffa made a fortification at Norwich about 570.”</div></blockquote><div></div></div><div>Boswell very cleverly determines that the mound and castle could be considered like an island and therefore might very well be the reference.</div><div><br /></div><div>In his <i><a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&cm_sp=SearchF-_-home-_-Results&an=Julian+Wolff&tn=Sherlockian+atlas&kn=&isbn=" target="_blank">Sherlockian Atlas</a></i>, Julian Wolff identified it in Plate IV: "The Map That Was Wanted: THE ISLAND OF UFA (sic) As Charted by the U.S. Navy.</div><div><br /></div><div>He noted that it was part of the Solomon Islands, specifically the Russell Islands Eastern Part: <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/p2k3TGcom7L1b9wh6" target="_blank">Ufa Island</a> (now called Ufaon). The Music Sherlock Holmes Heard in The Red-Headed League

From his own violin-playing to a few mentions of concerts he attended, he often escaped from the woes of the world and the problems he was trying to solve through music.</p><p>In "The Adventure of the Red Headed League," he says "Sarasate plays at St. James's Hall this afternoon," and he and Watson make their way to the concert, where Holmes clearly enjoyed himself, "wrapped in the most perfect happiness, gently waving his long, thin fingers in time to the music."</p><p>In addition to being a performer, Sarasate was a composer. We're told "he was a silent, morose man, not very popular either with masters or boys."</div><div><br /></div><div>And yet, when Lord Saltire stole away from the school, lured by his kidnapper, it was Heidegger who pursued him with such haste and vigor that he left his shirt and socks behind, climbed down the ivy, and gave chase on his bicycle before meeting a grisly end.</div><div><br /></div><div>Despite his lack of popularity and his semi-misanthropic nature, he went beyond the call of duty to safeguard one of the school's resident students.</div><div><br /></div><div>This is the kind of dedication and care we hear about by many teachers across the world. These employees of (mostly) public entities who are woefully underpaid take their charge seriously, as they are tasked with molding the minds and character of the next generation. He began his career in entertainment first as an actor, then as a stage manager, advertising agent, and for an artistic agency before joining the ranks of Granada Television in 1960. He literally worked his way up, beginning as a bus driver and handyman before being given responsibility for local programs and archival material.</p><p>He was tapped as an assistant director for <i>Coronation Street</i> in 1965 before joining other shows in the following years, such as <i>Mr. Rose</i> and <i>Pardon the Expression</i>. His fledgling experience as a producer began in 1968 with a couple of episodes of Coronation Street, followed by a proper producing career in 1972 with <i>A Family at Wa</i>r and <i>Holly</i>. </p><p>The Sherlock Holmes connection began in 1981, when Cox realized that Granada, which already had a commitment to dramatizations of classics from the likes of H.G. Wells, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, and Evelyn Waugh, should turn its attention to Sherlock Holmes.</p><p>According to the definitive biography of Cox by <a href="https://www.arthur-conan-doyle.com/index.php?title=Michael_Cox" target="_blank">The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia</a>,</p><blockquote><p>"Cox is really the father of the Sherlock Holmes series. Without him, it would not have existed. Indeed, it was he who, a fine connoisseur and fervent admirer of Arthur Conan Doyle, realized that Sherlock Holmes' stories had finally fallen into the public domain and that the great detective had hardly been seen on television screens for ten years. He was the one who convinced Granada's management that it was possible to achieve a great success by producing a colour version of Sherlock Holmes' adventures for a new generation of spectators."</p></blockquote><p>While the accountants were looking to cut expenses in any way, Cox realized the value for the Granada brand that classics afforded them. While they were never huge ratings successes, these lavishly produced dramas brought the studio respect in the domestic market and exposure on public television in the United States.</p><p>David Plowright, managing director (and Michael's boss) at Granada Television, gave Cox two conditions on which he would green-light the production: there had to be a financial commitment from an American partner before production began, and they needed someone of star quality — "Someone like Jeremy Brett," he said.</p><p>As they listed their criteria, the casting directors determined that they were unable to find "someone like Jeremy Brett" to fill the role—they could only find Jeremy Brett himself! So that was settled. As to the U.S. partner turned another lovely coincidence is that PBS's popular <i>MYSTERY!</i> series was produced by Joan Wilson, who just happened to be Jeremy Brett's wife.</p><p>In bringing the series to life, David Plowright provided another bit of inspiring leadership: he suggested that a full-scale replica of Baker Street be constructed as an exterior set. This iconic thoroughfare lent a great deal of realism and credibility to the Granada series over time, and is as essential and iconic as Brett himself in the title role.</p><p>The other piece of preparation that Michael Cox introduced to the production, along with associate producer Stuart Doughty and researcher Nick Cooney, was <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Baker-Street-File-Appearance-Television/dp/1553100387/ref=sr_1_1?crid=31CR84R4A1QCK&dchild=1&keywords=the+baker+street+file+michael+cox&qid=1613057657&sprefix=The+Baker+Street+File%2Caps%2C192&sr=8-1" target="_blank">The Baker Street File</a></i>. Now a collector's item, it was described as "A guide to the appearance and habits of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson specially prepared for the Granada Television series <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>." There were 100 copies published in 1983 for the cast and crew of the series — photocopied typed sheets between manilla card stock. Then in 1997, Calabash Press published a paperback version. Music—such an important part of Sherlock Holmes's personality—had to be commissioned, and <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/01/remembering-composer-patrick-gowers.html" target="_blank">Patrick Gowers</a> composed the main theme and incidental music, including period- and geography-specific pieces that were variations of the original.</p><p>The series finally debuted on ITV in England in April 1984. </p><p>Cox remained attached to the production for its entirety, through <i>The Case-book of Sherlock Holmes</i> in 1991. By that time, Cox was engaged as an independent producer (Granada had cut costs and eliminated a number of executive positions; by 1992, Plowright was outsted as CEO) and Jeremy Brett's health was in a precipitous decline. The age of Sherlock Holmes was over at Granada Television Cox went on to produce one more television movie in 1991: <i>Thatcher: The Final Days</i>.</p><p>Since that time, Michael Cox enjoyed retirement and participated in Sherlockian activities from time to time: he traveled to the United States to join the From Gillette to Brett conferences and attended gatherings of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, which made him an Honorary Member last year (a well-deserved accolade).</p><p>His contributions to the world of Sherlock Holmes will forever be with us.</p>

As Holmes observed in the opening of "The Creeping Man":</div><blockquote><div>“Whoever saw a frisky dog in a gloomy family, or a sad dog in a happy one? Snarling people have snarling dogs, dangerous people have dangerous ones. And their passing moods may reflect the passing moods of others.” </div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>For years, Sherlockians have debated the presence of a pet dog when Watson said "I keep a bull pup" in<i> A Study in Scarlet</i>. The debate is whether he meant he literally owned a dog, if it was a reference to a kind of pistol, or if it was a euphemism for having a short temper.</div><div><br /></div><div>That aside, we know that Holmes and Watson didn't keep a pet while at 221B Baker Street.</div><div><br /></div><div>However, there was a canine present in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>—one that was in the care of the unnamed landlady:</div><div><blockquote><div>“Now would you mind going down and fetching that poor little devil of a terrier which has been bad so long, and which the landlady wanted you to put out of its pain yesterday.”</div></blockquote></div><div>Other pet dogs didn't fare so well in the Canon (see this <a href="http://ihose.co/ABREV" target="_blank">key to the four-letter abbreviations</a>):</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Jephro Rucastle's dog Carlo went hungry: “We feed him once a day, and not too much then, so that he is always as keen as mustard.” [COPP]</li><li>Sir Eustace Brackenstall was a brute to his wife's dog: “There was a scandal about his drenching a dog with petroleum and setting it on fire—her ladyship’s dog, to make the matter worse—and that was only hushed up with difficulty.” [ABBE]</li><li>Another dog named Carlo was mistreated but this time with poison: “That’s what puzzled the vet. A sort of paralysis. Spinal meningitis, he thought.”  “And the dog! If one were to use such a poison, would one not try it first in order to see that it had not lost its power?” [SUSS]</li><li>The hound was maltreated in order to make it more ferocious and menacing: “The beast was savage and half-starved. If its appearance did not frighten its victim to death, at least it would paralyze the resistance which might be offered.” [HOUN]</li></ul></div><div>There's no record of cats being mistreated in the Sherlock Holmes stories, although there were only two instances on record of cats being kept as pets (aside from Dr. Roylott's cheetah):</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Milverton's household had one:  Something rushed out at us and my heart sprang into my mouth, but I could have laughed when I realized that it was the cat. [MILV]</li><li>And Holmes's elderly housekeeper Martha, “a dear old ruddy-faced woman in a country cap. She was bending over her knitting and stopping occasionally to stroke a large black cat upon a stool beside her.” [LAST]</li></ul></div><div>No signs of penguins, though. Christopher Plummer <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/05/movies/christopher-plummer-dead.html" target="_blank">passed away today</a> at the age of 91 after suffering a fall.</p><p>Plummer was a versatile actor, at home on the stage, television, and film, and the variety of his roles underscored his versatility and talent. From his early career on stage and television, he appeared in dozens of productions in a short span of years, becoming well-versed in and well-known for Shakespearean plays.</p><p>But it was his appearance as Captain Von Trapp in the 1965 hit <i>The Sound of Music</i> that set his career alight. He made his way to the National Theatre and then on to Broadway, where he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for playing the title role in Edmond Rostand's <i>Cyrano </i>in 1973. </p><p>His other awards, too numerous to mention in totality, included an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2MX3d5B" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Beginners</a></i> (2012), for which he also received a Golden Globe and BAFTA (as well as more than two dozen other minor awards). From his appearance in the Pink Panther anthology to his portrayals of figures such as Rudyard Kipling, King Herod, Archduke Ferdinand, Vladimir Nabokov, his impressive Shakespearean appearances, and the mass of comedies, dramas, and adventure productions, his abilities were truly remarkable. Whether events occur in 21st century London (<b><i><a href="https://amzn.to/3tbLyYo" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock</a></i></b>), New York (<b><i><a href="https://amzn.to/3akdzV4" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Elementary</a></i>)</b><i> </i>or Japan (<b><i><a href="https://amzn.to/3j0rxzl" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Miss Sherlock</a></i></b>), Sherlockian pastiches tend to reflect a contemporary mindset.</p><p>One recently released pastiche, <b><i><a href="https://amzn.to/2Yp4PYk" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">He Huli ʻUlaʻula -  A Study in Scarlet</a></i> </b>by Leilehua Yuen, does an exceptional job by setting her pastiche in 19th century Hawaii. (The introductory sequence alone, highlighting her travels to the island, provide an equivalent context to her character as the original <i>A Study in Scarlet</i><b> </b>[STUD] gave Watson.) When she arrives, she meets her cousin Kamaka Holmes, whose desire to become the first consulting detective in Hawaii is inspired by the methods and thinking of the Great Detective himself. <p></p><p>(This aspect is one of the joys of this volume; it is not just a simple transference of characters into this context, but also the fact that Holmes has an influence as a fictional character. Many of the story beats parallel the original <i>A </i><i>Study in Scarlet</i>, but also manage to find unique twists and perspectives which are not usually found in most pastiches). </p><p><b><i>He Huli ʻUlaʻula</i> </b>also provides a very engaging mystery within a unique historical context. With its intentions to educate as well as entertain, this volume contains several appendices which include a glossary, some historical insights, and a poem by Alexander Pope. Various maps and photos strewn throughout the volume also provide a greater sense of time and place, and are used judiciously to engage the reader. Given that Hawaii's history transitioning from a kingdom to a republic is not common knowledge, <b><i>He Huli ʻUlaʻula</i> </b>serves as a great entry point for further historical exploration.</p><p>As the first in a (hopeful) series of novels, <b><i>He Huli ʻUlaʻula</i> </b>is an enjoyable work that reflects the Sherlockian canon in multiple ways. The year is fairly well established, as he was referred to as "a tall, a gaunt man of sixty" in "His Last Bow," set squarely in 1914. It is sad to record that Miss B. married a man who, so far as we know, has no special interest in Sherlock. The first dinner was held June 5, 1934. Mr. H. G. Wells, who had been in New York about that time, should have been there, but admitted that he could not pass the examination. One member, of a horoscopic bent, announced that zodiacal and astrological study indicated Sherlock’s birthday as probably January 6, 1854. This pleased me as it coincided with the birthday, in 1894, of the 2nd Garrideb, Dr. Felix Morley. So we decided to hold the annual meeting, if possible, some time during January."</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>But when it comes to Holmes's zodiacal sign, Nathan Bengis took a different view ("What Was the Month?" <i>The Baker Street Journal</i>, Vol. 7, No. 4, 1957):</div><div><br /></div><blockquote><div>"For consider: if Sherlock Holmes was born on January 6, he comes under the sign of Capricorn; but if in May or June, he must be assigned to Taurus, Gemini, or Cancer. Now to denominate the Master as a Goat is simply ludicrous; a Bull, patently absurd, and a Crab, a rank insult. So that, by the end of the much vaunted Sherlockian process of elimination, he most be a son of Gemini, the very sign within which Mr. Boswell's date of June 17 falls!
