She was a mainstay on the screen for five decades.</p><p>She was most famous for her early role as Emma Peel in the television series <i>The Avengers</i> with Patrick McNee, and would be most recognized by younger audiences in <i>The Game of Thrones</i>, in which she played Olenna Tyrell, matriarch of the House of Tyrell.</p><p>Rigg played Tracy Draco, the only woman to have captured James Bond's heart, in <i>On Her Majesty's Secret Service</i>, where the two were wed.</p><p>Her main connection to Sherlock Holmes was straightforward: she took over the hosting duties for Masterpiece MYSTERY after Vincent Price's health issues caused him to step down. It's a national holiday that signals the unofficial end of summer, as people take final trips to the beach or mountains, enjoy a cookout, and the kids prepare to head back to school.</p><div style="text-align: left;">The holiday was officially recognized at the federal level in the 1930s, but its origins date to the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew. In 1887, Oregon became the first state to recognize Labor Day as a public holiday; by 1894, some 30 states were celebrating it as President Grover Cleveland signed it into law. But the law only gave the holiday to federal workers. It would take nearly 40 years to make it a holiday for everyone.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The Sherlock Holmes stories, set solidly in late Victorian / early Edwardian time, was filled with workers: sometimes nameless, faceless characters who were an essential part of the background of the action: cab drivers, gardeners, dockmen, weavers, housemaids, footmen and more. But there were others who sprang to relevance as they provided ample information to Holmes in his investigations.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">For you see, Sherlock Holmes believed in data over class. He knew that household staff and regular working-class people, like his Baker Street Irregulars, could see everything and overhear everyone without notice. And they deserved his attention.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Sherlock Holmes thrived on work—sometimes to a fault. While he told Watson "I never remember being tired by work, though idleness exhausts me completely," in <i>The Sign of Four</i>, his career would later see his constitution begin to suffer.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">In 'The Reigate Squires,' he was recovering from the "strain caused by his immense exertions," and in 'The Missing Three-Quarter' he returned to his rooms "exhausted with hunger and fatigue." There's no evidence he was talking about dinosaurs.</div><div><br /></div><div>You might think the Canon is devoid of mentions of human history that pre-date the spans of crime that Sherlock Holmes studied. And yet, there are a handful of mentions of prehistoric man.</div><div><br /></div><div>Interestingly, they all occur in stories related to the moors. Southwest England contains beautiful, rugged, and primordial landscapes that are very much the same today as they must have been thousands of years ago. Landscapes that saw our human ancestors struggling for survival.</div><div><br /></div><div>Two such stories take us to the moor: <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> and "The Devil's Foot." Both use the moor as a gothic setting to give us a sense of the supernatural: in one case a spectral hound from hell; in the other, mysterious deaths in a "devil-ridden" parish.</div><div><br /></div><div>In the first, Watson observes stone circles and wonders what they were. Stapleton informs him they were "the homes of our worthy ancestors. Prehistoric man lived thickly on the moor."</div><div><br /></div><div>Watson paints a wonderful image for us, based on his observations and reflections of the remnants of previous inhabitants of the moor:<br /><blockquote><div>"When you are once out upon its bosom you have left all traces of modern England behind you, but on the other hand you are conscious everywhere of the homes and the work of the prehistoric people. On all sides of you as you walk are the houses of these forgotten folk, with their graves and the huge monoliths which are supposed to have marked their temples. As you look at their gray stone huts against the scarred hill-sides you leave your own age behind you, and if you were to see a skin-clad, hairy man crawl out from the low door fitting a flint-tipped arrow on to the string of his bow, you would feel that his presence there was more natural than your own. The strange thing is that they should have lived so thickly on what must always have been most unfruitful soil. I am no antiquarian, but I could imagine that they were some unwarlike and harried race who were forced to accept that which none other would occupy."</div></blockquote></div><div><br />In "The Devil's Foot," we see the duo as far west as Cornwall, on the coast of Southwest England. The landscape is much the same as they explore it, yet Watson's assumptions about the people turn more violent than his initial take in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>.</div><div><blockquote><div>"In every direction upon these moors there were traces of some vanished race which had passed utterly away, and left as it sole record strange monuments of stone, irregular mounds which contained the burned ashes of the dead, and curious earthworks which hinted at prehistoric strife. The glamour and mystery of the place, with its sinister atmosphere of forgotten nations, appealed to the imagination of my friend, and he spent much of his time in long walks and solitary meditations upon the moor."</div></blockquote></div><div><br />While man has always had a predilection for violence among his own species, he never had a chance to do battle with prehistoric ancestors that went even farther back in the epochal timeline. Namely, dinosaurs.</div><div><br /></div><div>That is, until Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3lY7inh" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Lost World</a></i> came along. And later, Michael Crichton's <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3lTpL4d" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Jurassic Park</a></i>, which was dedicated to Conan Doyle. Or that time that Sherlock Holmes battled a T-Rex.</div><div><br /></div><div>What?</div><div><br /></div><div>Yes, that's right. As soon as you don a pair of red running shoes or a bright yellow slicker, there's a higher degree of certainty that you'll be caught.</p><p>That being the case, would you consider wearing a deerstalker cap while you're exposing yourself?</p><p>Because <a href="https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/serial-flasher-who-wears-sherlock-22624365?fbclid=IwAR2DbQsRMBs9QgOXKKnLSpS582Tr8aZa-quw-kRMZkdaR9hfk5M1GtbESiY" target="_blank">there's a serial flasher on the loose</a> in Tunbridge Wells, Kent who is wearing "a Sherlock Holmes hat," according to officials, as reported in <i>The Daily Star</i>.</p><p>If Tunbridge Wells sounds familiar to you, it's the location of <b><a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/09/groombridge-place-sherlock-holmes.html#.X1FSRnlKjb0" target="_blank">Groombridge Place</a></b>, an inspiration for Birlstone Manor in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>.</p><p>For three times in the span of two days, the would-be detective determined he needed a little more exposure. "I am lost without my Boswell," as Holmes said in "A Scandal in Bohemia."</p><p>The man is described as in his 40s or 50s and with a gray beard. Hey wait a moment — <a href="ihose.co/ihose199" target="_blank">our most recent podcast guest</a> fits that description. And he regularly wears a deerstalker...</p><p>Tunbridge Wells local Simon Vickers, 51, said: "This guy is asking to be caught really—anyone wearing a deerstalker is pretty easy to spot, so hopefully he'll be tracked down before much longer."</p><p><br /></p><p>Thinking this is a purely modern affliction, we turned to the Canon for reassurance. With a full head of hair and a square jawline, he wouldn't have seemed to fit Paget's version. Did you know that no one is born with freckles? That's because freckles are the result of exposure to the sun: they are pigment-producing cells that get revved up due to exposure to the sun.</div><div><br /></div><div>Liver spots are freckles that are acquired by older people who have been exposed to the sun over long periods of time. This is why they're sometimes called "age spots."</div><div><br /></div><div>With fair-skinned people more likely to get freckles, it's surprising we don't hear more about them in the Sherlock Holmes stories, given the fair-skinned beauties we come across. In fact, there are only two instances of freckled ladies that we know of. Do you know who they are?</div><div><br /></div><div>One is Laura Lyons, the typist and friend of Sir Charles Baskerville in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>. Watson met with her and was taken by her beauty:</div><div><blockquote><div>"The first impression left by Mrs. Lyons was one of extreme beauty. Her eyes and hair were of the same rich hazel colour, and her cheeks, though considerably freckled, were flushed with the exquisite bloom of the brunette, the dainty pink which lurks at the heart of the sulphur rose."</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>The other is Violet Hunter, the brave young lady who serves as a governess to the Rucastle family and is forced to cut her hair short and wear an electric blue dress as she sat in front of a window. Watson described her entrance to 221B Baker Street: "She was plainly but neatly dressed, with a bright, quick face, freckled like a plover’s egg."</div><div><br /></div><div>Interestingly, Wikipedia describes a plover's technique:</div><blockquote><div>"Plovers engage in false brooding, a type of distraction display. It was a momentous occasion, as Kean is only the sixth head of the BSI since its founding in 1934.</p><p>Burt and Scott had an opportunity to speak with Michael on a wide range of topics, including his Sherlockian origins (which were induced rather than pursued), his career in the publishing industry, early days in Sherlockian scions, and his role with the BSI Press.</p><p>Michael also takes us behind the scenes to give us the story of his selection as the next BSI, going back a number of years. This was certainly where the man lived. Some blankets rolled in a waterproof lay upon that very stone slab upon which Neolithic man had once slumbered. The ashes of a fire were heaped in a rude grate. Beside it lay some cooking utensils and a bucket half-full of water. A litter of empty tins showed that the place had been occupied for some time, and I saw, as my eyes became accustomed to the checkered light, a pannikin and a half-full bottle of spirits standing in the corner. In the middle of the hut a flat stone served the purpose of a table, and upon this stood a small cloth bundle—the same, no doubt, which I had seen through the telescope upon the shoulder of the boy. It contained a loaf of bread, a tinned tongue, and two tins of preserved peaches."</div></blockquote></div><div><div>When Holmes arrived (much to Watson's surprise), the doctor observed:</div><blockquote><div>"He was thin and worn, but clear and alert, his keen face bronzed by the sun and roughened by the wind. In his tweed suit and cloth cap he looked like any other tourist upon the moor, and he had contrived, with that cat-like love of personal cleanliness which was one of his characteristics, that his chin should be as smooth and his linen as perfect as if he were in Baker Street."</div></blockquote></div><div>And herein lies our question about how Holmes was able to affect such a pristine appearance in the wilderness of Dartmoor, set up as he was in a stone hut. Being clean-shaven in such a situation is not difficult to achieve, but but the linen always puzzled us. He mentioned Cartwright as supplying him with "a loaf of bread and a clean collar," but wouldn't there be more to his appearance than a clean collar? Perhaps having a clean-shaven face framed by a clean collar was enough to throw Watson off the scent.</div><div><br /></div><div>Then again, Holmes called the hut his "occasional retreat." Was there another place on the moor where he had a hideout? Perhaps he surreptitiously rented a room in Coombe Tracey. It was on December 7, 1934 that the formal dinner first got its start, but only one more was held (in 1936) before Edgar W. Smith came along and reinvigorated the tradition in January of 1940.</div><div><br /></div><div>Since that time, the Baker Street Irregulars has held its dinner every January, without interruption. World War II didn't stop it. Nor did years that included protests, terrorist events, financial upheaval, or anything else. The uncertainty around the future of the virus in the country stems from a lack of a national plan and that dictum of individuality that flows through Americans, whose national phrase seems to have gone from "<i>E Pluribus Unum</i>" to "You're Not the Boss of Me."</div><div><br /></div><div>So here we are.</div><div><br /></div><div>The Baker Street Irregulars plans to hold the Distinguished Speaker Lecture on Thursday, January 7 and its traditional dinner on January 8 (the latter is for members only). There may be additional events added, as the "weekend" has stretched informally from Wednesday through Sunday, with other associated groups holding events throughout.</div><div><br /></div><div>More information is available on the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/bsi-event-dates/" target="_blank">BSI Events page here</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div>January will be strange (indeed, as strange as these past few months have been). But Sherlockians are a determined and social group and will find a way to power through it. Creative and determined members thus far have hosted pop-up conferences, movie events, and social hours via Zoom since April, making up for the lack of in-person gatherings that define our clubable nature with our kinspirits.</div><div><br /></div><div>Interestingly, I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere as a podcast has very rarely held in-person events. Our co-hosts have recorded all but two episodes from separate locations. And we've held a couple of live-streamed video recordings over the summer. Expect more like that.</div><div><br /></div><div>Meanwhile, we hope to be back together at some point in 2021 (perhaps for the BSI's <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2020/03/20/bsi-2021-conference-dates/" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes and the British Empire</a> conference?).
