It was a mixture of his background and experience, and his nearly life-long love of Sherlock Holmes.</p><p>It also helps that he lives in close proximity to the location where Conan Doyle spent his first honeymoon—a location with an eerie occurrence that may have led to the selection of the Great Detective's name.</p><p>You'll want to see if you can test your knowledge with the <b>Canonical Couplet</b>: we give you two lines of poetry that describe one of the stories, and you name it. It was a momentous occasion, as Kean is only the sixth head of the BSI since its founding in 1934.</p><p>Burt and Scott had an opportunity to speak with Michael on a wide range of topics, including his Sherlockian origins (which were induced rather than pursued), his career in the publishing industry, early days in Sherlockian scions, and his role with the BSI Press.</p><p>Michael also takes us behind the scenes to give us the story of his selection as the next BSI, going back a number of years. We discuss his vision for the role of a literary society in the twenty-first century and more pointedly, the difficult decision to make the 2021 BSI Weekend a virtual affair.</p><p>Also covered is our upcoming 200th episode: we are looking for your feedback. And of course, the latest round of <b>Canonical Couplets</b>. We had a record number of submissions in the last episode; the prize this time is a copy of <i>Sherlock Holmes: The Writings of John H. Well, hold that thought for a moment. A quick word about where we are.<br /> <br /> As you're probably aware, there is the <a href="http://www.acdfriends.org/" target="_blank">Friends of the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection</a>, a group specifically focused on the support of said collection at the Toronto Public Library.<br /> <br /> Separately, <b>The Arthur Conan Doyle Society</b> was established by Christopher Roden, BSI ("Sir Henry Baskerville") and Barbara Roden, BSI ("Beryl Stapleton"), but is now defunct. From the late 1980s through the late 1990s, they published <i>The Parish Magazine</i>, the newsletter of the Arthur Conan Doyle Society and <i>ACD: The Journal of the Arthur Conan Doyle Society</i>.<br /> <br /> But for 20 years, there has been nothing in terms of a dedicated place for scholarship about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.<br /> <br /> Certainly the Sherlockian and Doylean communities do not lack for publications, in terms of the traditional (journals, books, and newsletters) and the new (online outlets to discuss publications past an present).<br /> <br /> Dr. Polasek raises an excellent point about the scholarship that's doing nothing in the night-time:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "We don’t have a home specifically for peer-reviewed scholarship. This is in spite of the number of academics we have in our ranks, and in spite of the fact that a lot of scholars who aren’t part of the Sherlockian community write on Conan Doyle’s life and works. Most Sherlockians miss those articles because they appear scattered in discipline-specific academic journals with small, specialist readerships."</blockquote> <br /> Therefore, she is establishing <i>The Conan Doyle Review</i> as<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "A home for scholars across disciplines to publish work on Conan Doyle’s life, works, creative afterlives, and cultural legacies in a journal with academic rigor and professional distinction—a journal that welcomes readers who don’t necessarily research and write such articles themselves, but would nevertheless be interested in reading them. The Conan Doyle Review will sit at the intersection of the academic, Sherlockian, and Doylean worlds."</blockquote> <br /> Today, Polasek announced the launch of <i>The Conan Doyle R</i><i>eview</i>. When the magazine published its last issue in 1950, it was the end of an era that spanned nearly 60 years.<br /> <br /> In the late 1990s, <i>The Strand</i> was given a new life by Andrew Gulli, who determined that the world was prepared for more literature around detective fiction. Summed up, this is basically an issue that is being brought to court via a case titled <b><a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/125645482/KLINGER-vs-CONAN-DOYLE-ESTATE-LTD">Klinger vs. Conan Doyle Estate</a></b>, in which Leslie Klinger, BSI ("The Abbey Grange") is contesting the Conan Doyle Estate's claim that any new content that contains Sherlock Holmes must pay a royalty or license fee to the Estate. Burt and Scott parse through some of the non-technical/legal aspects of the case and discuss what's at stake.<br /> <br /> Speaking of being at stake, the other item on the docket is the debate as to what in fact constitutes a Sherlockian of good standing? That is, can one have arrived at the doorstep of 221B Baker Street via the BBC series (or Granada, or Universal, etc.) or must one have been schooled only in the printed literature and dress the part of a 1940s joiner? It's quite a debate - one that was taken up vehemently by The Baker Street Babes earlier this year, after the "Elite Devotee Redux" was published in recently resurrected  <i>Saturday Review of Literature</i>.
