Today is a special day in the date-books of Sherlockians and Doyleans from around the world. On May 22, 1859, Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born.<br />
<br />
You may recall that on <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/05/fine-figure-of-man-tall-lithe-and-agile_22.html#.WSufpGgrLb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this date last year</a>, Google presented one of its holiday logos, to honor his most famous creation. What will the world have in store this year for Conan Doyle?<br />

We suppose he's still be honored every day, since his name is still associated with the immortal Sherlock Holmes, Brigadier Gerard, Professor Challenger and Harry Houdini, not to mention <a href="http://www.ash-tree.bc.ca/acdsocy.html">the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Society</a> and <a href="http://www.acdfriends.org/">Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Collection</a> at the <a href="http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/uni_spe_conan_doyle.jsp">Toronto Public Library</a>.<br />

As you probably know,  the Baker Street Irregulars, the literary society dedicated to the study of Sherlock Holmes, have called New York City their headquarters since their founding in 1934. While the early membership hailed almost exclusively from the northeast, today's BSI hails largely from around North America and even from a number of other continents.<br />
<br />
And despite the infinite number of entertainment venues in New York, each year <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/bsiweekend.html">when it is time for Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts to descend</a> upon Gotham, there are a number of places that we like to visit, revisit and call our home-away-from home.<br />
<br />
When we noticed an article from the Louisville, Kentucky <span style="font-style: italic;">Courier-Journal</span> titled <a href="http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007705200367">New York has a wealth of literary landmarks</a>, our antennae went up. Upon finishing the article, it seemed that it had been written for anyone who has attended a BSI Weekend in the past. A few of the familiar landmarks that made the C-J's list:<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.algonquinhotel.com/">The Algonquin Hotel</a>, the oldest still-operating hotel in New York and the birthplace of the New Yorker. It is also the unofficial headquarters of the BSI during our January weekends.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.mcsorleysnewyork.com/">McSorley's Old Ale House</a>, which usually plays host to the conclusion of the Christopher Morley Walk, is noted for its very reasonably-priced food.</li>
<li><a href="http://mysteriousbookshop.com/">The Mysterious Bookshop</a> is Otto Penzler's book-lover's haven, now transplanted in a trendy TriBeCa neighborhood. Although it's slightly out of the way, Otto's hospitality and tremendous selection make it worth the trip.</li>
</ul>
Print out the original article and file it away for January. You'll find yourself making a checklist of these places and being able to get through quite a bit of it. And you might even find something you've previously missed that you'd like to visit this time around.<br />

One of the destinations of many Sherlockian tourists in London is the <a href="http://www.parkplazasherlockholmes.com/" target="_blank">Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes Hotel</a>, a (now) boutique hotel on Baker Street that is part of Park Plaza Hotels of Europe.<br />
<br />
Although the exterior retains that classic Baker Street look, including some very large bow windows on the first floor (that's second floor to you Yanks), the accommodations inside are much more modern. And the rates, while not outrageous by London standards, may be more than the average tourist can handle - especially given <a href="http://www.x-rates.com/">the current exchange rate</a> of the U.S. Dollar and the British Pound.<br />
<br />
Actually, the room rates are fairly reasonable, given the style and comfort of the hotel, as well as the notion that you're staying just a block or two away from 221B.<br />
<br />

Félicitations a mes amis!<br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.sshf.com/design/pub_mag1.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://www.sshf.com/design/pub_mag1.jpg" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px;" /></a><br />The magazine, lavishly produced in color, is free for members of the SSHF and contains all sorts of Sherlockian material, from news to music and book reviews, recaps of events to scholarship, and much, much more. And of course, it wouldn't be a SSHF publication without unique artwork by Jean-Pierre Cagnat.<br /><br />The cost of a single issue is 12€ for non-European subscribers, or 30€ for four issues per year. The end is nigh. At least that’s what the publishing world would have us believe. With the advent of the final Harry Potter book this summer, there’s a fear that with J.K. Rowling’s long-awaited finale will come the end of the cottage industry of related Harry Potter books.<br />
<br />
The May 10 edition of the <span style="font-style: italic;">Wall Street Journal</span> ran a piece (<a href="http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB117876383431898056-GThmnkKdFTp3CJQAcEEzWOdEkHA_20080509.html?mod=tff_main_tff_top">Last Hurrah for ‘Harry’ Offshoots?</a>) in which the books about the books were called “a whole literary ecosystem,” while the original Potter canon was likened to “whales to which many barnacles have attached themselves.” With over 190 books in print, it’s easy to see why. But is there cause for concern about the demise of Potterian scholarship and publishing?<br />
<br />
I think you know where I’m going with this. We’ve seen this phenomenon before, with Sherlockian scholarship paving the way. Before Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (or was it Dr. Watson?) had completed the Canon in 1927, Ronald Knox had penned his seminal treatise <a href="http://lachlan.bluehaze.com.au/books/knox_essays_in_satire/index.html">Studies in the Literature of Sherlock Holmes</a> in 1911. Only four years after Conan Doyle’s death did the Baker Street Irregulars came into being; it was just over a decade later that they began publishing the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/"><i>Baker Street Journal</i></a>.<br />
<br />
To this day, Sherlockian scholarship has not dimmed. The BSJ is still being published some 60 years later. In England, the <a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.org.uk/journal.php"><i>Sherlock Holmes Journal</i></a> is churned out on a regular basis and has been for over 50 years. Countless societies around the world continue with their own publications; online discussion groups flourish.<br />
<br />
Of course, the characters were never under copyright, so great liberties have been taken by a variety of authors, placing Holmes with concurrent historical figures and other literary characters, as well as in unlikely situations including sailing on the Titanic and getting married.<br />
<br />
While the Harry Potter characters will be well protected from such pastiches in the short term, parodies and pure scholarship are fair game. I suppose the question remains: will the seven original books continue to hold the interest of future generations in the same way they’ve enchanted the current adolescents and adults alike? If so, is the content of such a rich type that unending scholarship can continue to be churned out, or are these simply “beach books” – sensational and fun reading - that helped sustain the publishing industry for a short time?<br />
<br />
I'll close with a more controversial question for you, dear reader: were the Holmes stories simply viewed as Victorian/Edwardian beach books? It seems like many in academia today treat them as such.<br />
<br />

First it was the politically-correct BBC bowing to current groundswell when they barred Sherlock Holmes from smoking in their recent production <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892743/"><i>Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars</i></a> starring Jonathan Pryce.<br />
<br />
Now it seems that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) - the entity that is responsible for rating movies – is using smoking as one of the factors in deciding how to rate movies. They have not delineated any specifics, but it is thought that if a film already has a PG-13 rating thanks to levels of violence, drug use and sex, smoking will tip it over the edge to make it an R movie.<br />
<br />
Evidently, anti-smoking activists think this doesn't go far enough, as they would like to see an automatic R attached to any movie that features smoking. They want to protect the children.<br />
<br />
But I ask: would a Sherlock Holmes movie with a tobacco-free Holmes help the kids? Would they be better off by seeing the first unofficial consulting detective without his pipe? Think about it: the entire world knows Sherlock Holmes because of his profile in his hat and his pipe. Remove the latter and he’s just a mad hatter.<br />
<br />
Just think of the consequences:<br />

Then you’ll have the anti-cavity lobby and the American Dental Association after you. Not to mention the creators of Kojak, who’d sue for copyright infringement.</li>
<li>What would Holmes store in his Persian slipper?</li>
<li>When he’s in a disputatious mood, what physical object would he choose?</li>
</ul>
We've seen the modern version of this taken to its logical conclusion in the BBC's <i>Sherlock</i> with the three-patch problem utilizing nicotine patches instead. But Sherlock and Mycroft do enjoy a cigarette from time to time, despite the best efforts of Watson and Mrs. Hudson.<br />
<br />
These are the ramifications if the character were forced to go cold turkey. If he retained all of his addictions as we know them, it seems that any Holmes movie would likely receive an R rating, thus keeping away the younger crowd. As if we need any more obstacles in introducing Sherlock Holmes to kids…<br />

As you can imagine, it can sometimes be difficult to come up with content for this blog. Even though we can generally find something in the news every day that mentions "Sherlock Holmes," it's not always what we would deem "blogworthy" - that is, not of high enough quality to place before you, dear reader. When you couple that with a busy work life and home life, it's amazing that we can get one post out a week, let alone one a day.<br />

Of course, not being satisfied with simply being over-committed and over-delivering, we're actually thinking of <span style="font-style: italic;">over </span>over-delivering. I'm in the process of developing something to complement <strike>The Baker Street Blog</strike> I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere and make the experience even richer for you. What could it possibly be? Interested? Curious?<br />

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need an iPod. You can use any MP3 player or you can listen directly from your computer. One thing I strongly recommend - and again, you don't need an iPod or an Apple computer to do this - is <a href="http://www.apple.com/itunes/">iTunes</a>, the free software for listening to music and podcasts. You can <a href="http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/">download iTunes here</a>. It makes subscribing to podcasts very easy.<br />

In "<a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/suss.htm">The Sussex Vampire</a>," Holmes received a letter mentioning the <i>Matilda Briggs</i>.  But he clarified the statement for Watson:<br />

"Matilda Briggs was not the name of a young woman,     Watson," said Holmes in a reminiscent voice. "It was a ship which is associated     with the giant rat of Sumatra, a story for which the world is not yet prepared."</blockquote>

We have no other information about the <span style="font-style: italic;">Matilda Briggs</span>. But there are some theories that there was a connection with the real-life mystery ship, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Celeste" style="font-style: italic;">Mary Celeste</a>.<br />

<span id="fullpost"><br />The <span style="font-style: italic;">Mary Celeste</span> was an abandoned ghost ship found off the coast of Portugal in 1872. If you'd like more background about the ship, check the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Celeste">Wikipedia article</a>.<br /><br />The connection to the <span style="font-style: italic;">Matilda Briggs</span>? In actuality, there was a woman on board named Sophia</span><span id="fullpost"> Matilda Briggs. And in 1884, Arthur Conan Doyle popularized the myth by making it the basis of his story "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Habakuk_Jephson%27s_Statement" title="J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement">J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement</a>."<br /><br />And the reason for mentioning it all all right now? There are news reports that a "ghost yacht" <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6574547.stm">was found off the coast of Australia</a> with its crew missing, a battered sail, computers functional, and table set for dinner. Could it be another case of the Mary Celeste? Or could it be that, since Australia isn't all that distant from Sumatra, there is another case of a giant rat?</span><br />

To celebrate that event, producer James Fitzpatrick of <a href="http://www.tadlowmusic.com/">Tadlow Music</a> is releasing a limited collector's edition, the <span style="font-weight: bold;">World Premiere Recording of the Complete Score</span> of <a href="http://amzn.to/1ob8SAb" rel="nofollow" style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</a> (<a href="http://amzn.to/1ob8SAb" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Amazon</a> | <a href="http://amzn.to/1uiMV2P" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Amazon UK</a>).<br />

You may recall <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/10/in-music-soli_1.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">a previous post </a>in which we highly recommended that collectors get a taste for the full score by purchasing Rózsa's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FKorngold-Concerto-variazioni-Carmen-Fantasy%2Fdp%2FB000003FIW%2Fsr%3D8-4%2Fqid%3D1159756065%2Fref%3Dsr%5F1%5F4%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dmusic&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=ur2&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;camp=1789&creative=9325" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Violin Concerto, Op. 24</a>. Now we have for the first time the definitive score, orchestrated by noted Rózsa expert <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0706992/" target="_blank">Nic Raine</a>, a noteworthy orchestrator and composer in his own right. We have previewed a copy and recommend it with our highest regard. Stick with us. This is a long, but worthwhile post to read.<br />
<br />
<span id="fullpost">While the "Classic Themes" version was at least representative of the theme, that orchestra was<a href="http://www.filmreference.com/images/sjff_04_img1597.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://www.filmreference.com/images/sjff_04_img1597.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; width: 200px;" /></a> tinny in comparison to what is now available from Tadlow Music.  As well it should, since the music is performed by the <a href="http://www.city-of-prague-philharmonic-orchestra.org/en/article.asp?article_id=29&lang_id=2" target="_blank">City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra</a> with the same orchestral line-up that Rózsa used: 26 violins, 10 violas, 10 celli, 5 basses, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, harp, piano, celesta and timpani plus 4 percussion. The original Rózsa sketches were obtained from Syracuse University, containing not only the complete music as heard in the film, but additional and alternate cues never used.<br /><br />With over 77 minutes of music, the richness and emotion of Rózsa's score is more evident than ever. Solo violinist Lucie Svehlova truly captures the depth of loneliness, melancholy and quirkiness of Holmes through her interpretation. One can almost feel him longing for a relationship other than the cerebral, never to find it. There are alternate cues for some of the Scottish music in the film, and the original version of the main titles.<br /><br />The liner notes that accompany the CD are extensive - the booklet is 24 pages long and filled with information about the life of Rózsa, notes on the cues, and details about the production of this new recording.  In it, Rózsa's daughter Juliet writes:</span><br />

<span id="fullpost">Billy Wilder had a grand vision for the 260-page shooting screenplay with a $10 million budget. <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005JKHF?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00005JKHF" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00005JKHF" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /></i> was set to be three hours and twenty minutes with an intermission, but was drastically cut after studio executives demanded a shorter version. Wilder acquiesced, taking out what Rózsa considered some of the best material. According to the composer, what resulted was:</span><br />

<span id="fullpost">...two episodes were cut and hacked about in an attempt to make one story out of two. The weakest story, about a submarine disguised as the Loch Ness Monster was left intact, but elsewhere all the best bits were eliminated. The truncated film as you see it today is a sorry travesty of the original and a great disappointment to all involved.</span></blockquote>
<span id="fullpost"><br />According to the liner notes, "Wilder was devastated by the callous emasculation of his work, and returned to the screen only infrequently after that. <span style="font-weight: bold;">The restoration and preservation of Wilder's original cut remains one of the highest priorities of the <a href="http://www.afi.com/" target="_blank">American Film Institute</a>.</span>" [emphasis ours]<br /><br />In the meantime, Fitzpatrick has done a remarkable job of restoring and preserving this score for our pleasure. It seems that one of our own is suffering in a pretty bad way and could use some snail mail to cheer him up. Joseph Coppola, BSI ("Victor Hatherly") writes that a fellow member of the Mycroft Holmes Society of Syracuse needs some good old community effort to help lift his spirits.  Joe writes:<br />

It's not very often that one of the original 60 stories from the Sherlock Holmes canon goes on the market. Which is why <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/6559519.stm">news of the June 21 auction</a> of the manuscript of "<a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/3gab.htm">The Three Gables</a>" is likely to attract quite a bit of attention.<br />

The aucton is being held at <a href="http://sothebys.com/app/live/event/EventDetail.jsp?event_id=28297">Sotheby's in New York</a> (click the link for limited details) on June 21 at 10:00 a.m. Previews are available from June 15 - 20, 2007 and a catalogue is <a href="http://sothebys.com/app/live/pub/PubCatDetail.jsp?event_id=28297">available for purchase</a>. The manuscript, once owned by the Marquis of Donegall and then Walter Pond, BSI,  is expected to fetch approximately $350,000.<br />

Notice I didn't say "collect," because I'm far too aware that some of us <span style="font-style: italic;">accumulate</span> books rather than collect them.  And a common difficulty is locating that book that you know you just saw and making sense of an ever-increasing library.<br /><br />By day I work in the marketing world where my specialty is social media - the convergence of marketing, advertising, PR and technology - taking the forms of blogs, podcasts, online communities, wikis, RSS feeds, etc.  The Baker Street Blog in its current form exists because of my interest/expertise in this area. As a by-product of this work, I get to see a lot of social networking sites that can enhance productivity, make our lives easier, or are just plain fun.<br /><br />Here are three new solutions for book lovers that I thought you might want to check out for yourself.  All of these sites share a couple of main features: the book titles, images and descriptions are driven by large databases such as <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&keywords=Sherlock%20Holmes&tag=thebakerstree-20&index=books&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325">Amazon.com</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /> and the Library of Congress; and they allow you to connect with other readers.<br /><br /><span id="fullpost"><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">"In his library..." LibraryThing</span><br />The first up is <a href="http://librarything.com/">LibraryThing</a>. This site launched last summer and has really taken off. Essentially, it is two things: a way to catalog your library and a way to connect with other people who have the same books. You just need to create a user name and password and you're done. And here are some of the things you can do:<br /><ul><li>Input the ISBN and let the databases populate the fields<br /></li><li>Rate your books and write reviews</li><li>Search, sort and edit your book inforation</li><li>Apply tags that identify your collection the way you want to think about it</li><li>Join groups and chat about your interests</li><li>Get recommendations from LibraryThing based on your collection</li></ul>LibraryThing has a limited version and a paid version; with the free version, you can catalogue up to 200 books; with the paid version you can list an unlimited number of books. The paid version costs $10/year or $25 for a lifetime membership. Explore.</span>  With Shelfari you can create a virtual bookshelf to show off your books. It's essentially the same model as Library Thing: Connect with friends. Discover exciting new titles. Voice your opinion. All for free. But the major difference is that you actually can show off your books. Among the things you can do with Revish:<br /><ul><li>Review books<br /></li><li>Read and comment on reviews</li><li>Keep a reading list and a reading journal</li><li>Participate in groups, discussing books</li></ul><br />This is definitely a site for the serious book lover. Liebow, BSI ("Inspector Gregory") passed away this weekend. For those who knew him, Ely was a deeply thoughtful and intellectual man with a superb sense of humor and a deep knowledge of Sherlock Holmes. I didn't know him well, but I did manage to raise a few glasses with him in a suite at the Iroquois Hotel some 10 or 12 years ago after my first BSI Dinner (and before the Iroquois went upscale). He was quiet in that room of rabblerousers (you know who you are!), but when he spoke, he was heard. And then there was usually heard a thunder of laughter.<br /><br />In addition to the Baker Street Irregulars, Ely was a member of Hugo's Companions, the Hounds of the Baskerville and 140 Varieties of Tobacco Ash. He appeared at a number of conferences over the years and was known for his signature Sherlockian book:<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0879721987?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0879721987">Dr. Joe Bell: Model for Sherlock Holmes</a>, which has just been re-released.  And the estimable Brad Keefauver has him listed at #70 on the <a href="http://www.sherlockpeoria.net/Report_pages/top100writers.html">Hundred Hottest Sherlockian Writers of the Last Century</a>.<br /><br />Ely's obituary ran in the <a href="http://www.legacy.com/ChicagoTribune/Obituaries.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=87044995" style="font-style: italic;">Chicago Tribune</a> and the <a href="http://www.legacy.com/ChicagoSunTimes/DeathNotices.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=87006080" style="font-style: italic;">Chicago Sun-Times</a>:<br /><blockquote>Ely M. For those of you who didn't catch on yet, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/04/is-long-row-veil_1.html#.Uuc9SsQo5w3" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">yesterday's post</a> (April 1, 2007 - that should have been a dead giveaway) was a hoax. While the rumors of Russell Crowe are still rumors, albeit well-publicized ones, the Nicholas Rowe fantasy was purely an invention of the twisted minds here at I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere.<br />

Further to the reports of a <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/03/one-man-can-invent-another-can-discover_16.html#.Uuc9DMQo5w0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes movie</a> being developed by Warner Bros. comes the news of a lead actor that will undoubtedly be more acceptable to readers of this blog. The initial reports were that <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080317032801/http://www.moviesonline.ca/movienews_11569.html">Russell Crowe</a> would be the lead, in a nod to Holmes' more physical side, and many Sherlockians were livid.<br />

But you may be pleased to know that the producers have come to their senses and have instead settled on <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0746583/">Nicholas Rowe</a> as their choice. Astute Sherlockians will remember Rowe from the 1985 adventure film <a href="https://amzn.to/2PpllXr"><i>Young Sherlock Holmes</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0000AUHPC" style="border: medium none; margin: 0px;" width="1" />, directed by Barry Levinson and produced by Steven Spielberg, where he played a school-age Holmes who looked remarkably like Joseph Bell, the medical professor who inspired Conan Doyle.<br />

The producers, who originally were going for toughness, have evidently agreed that Rowe, who stands 6 feet 4 inches tall, will undoubtedly be an imposing figure.  And they're being mindful of the Canon as he perfectly fits Watson's description of Holmes from <span style="font-style: italic;">A Study in Scarlet</span>:<br />

"In height he was rather over     six feet, and so excessively lean that he seemed to be considerably taller. His eyes were     sharp and piercing, save during those intervals of torpor to which I have alluded; and his     thin, hawk-like nose gave his whole expression an air of alertness and decision."</blockquote>
Rowe seems to be following in the footsteps of the late <a href="https://amzn.to/2PiByxL">Jeremy Brett</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: medium none; margin: 0px;" width="1" />, as Rowe lost his longtime partner Lou Gish last year to cancer. You may recall that Brett went on with the Granada series shortly after he lost his wife Joan to cancer in the mid-1980s.<br />
<br />
This is really welcome news, as Hollywood seems to get casting all wrong many times in Holmes films. It's encouraging to see an actor who can really inhabit the character - especially one who proved himself in his previous Holmes outing.<br />
