Integrating several of these factors into a single story can lead to very irregular storytelling, focusing less on the mystery and more on the uniqueness of the theme.</p><p>Timothy Miller's <b><i><a href="https://amzn.to/41uBRYG" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Strange Case of the Pharoah's Heart</a></i></b> is a uniquely intriguing piece of Sherlockian writing, integrating real-life historical events and genre themes into a compelling read that deserves your attention.</p><p>Miller's premise is intriguing and unique: in 1923, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson had a serious falling-out over their belief systems. Sherlock Holmes has adopted the philosophy of spiritualism over his usual belief in deduction much to Dr. Watson's chagrin. Although they split, Watson is approached by Lady Evelyn Carnarvon whose father sponsored the expedition that discovered the <a href="https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/archaeologist-opens-tomb-of-king-tut" target="_blank">Tomb of Tutenkamen</a>. Soon, Holmes and Watson are joined by a third character, a woman named Estelle Roberts who is a medium who can communicate with the dead.</p><p>Miller's <b><i><a href="https://bookshop.org/a/93253/9781645060819" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Strange Case of the Pharoah's Heart</a></i></b> also takes a unique narrative approach, splitting the narration between Dr. James Watson and Estelle Roberts. While this may dismay Sherlockian purists, it provides great tension between the potentially rational and potentially supernatural. The dual narrative opens up the story, providing insights and perspectives that could be easily missed in a straightforward pastiche. As the mystery progresses, Miller introduces various characters who help both Holmes and Watson shine.</p><p>Describing the plot in greater detail would be unfair to Timothy Miller, as <b><i>The Strange Case of the Pharoah's Heart</i> </b>provides a great reading experience for Sherlockians. Oh sure, the crimes would be revealed, but the methods were more opaque.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">In <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, Holmes showed his disdain for literary detectives:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><blockquote><div>“Now, in my opinion, Dupin was a very inferior fellow. That trick of his of breaking in on his friends’ thoughts with an apropos remark after a quarter of an hour’s silence is really very showy and superficial. He had some analytical genius, no doubt; but he was by no means such a phenomenon as Poe appeared to imagine.”</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>And Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in <a href="https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/sir-arthur-conan-doyle-interview-1927/" target="_blank">a famous 1927 newsreel</a>, indicated his own dissatisfaction with the mysterious methods of such sleuths:</div><blockquote>“I used occasionally to read detective stories, it often annoyed me how in the old-fashioned detective story the detective always seemed to get at his results either by some sort of lucky chance or fluke, or else it was quite unexplained how he got there. He got there but he never gave an explanation how. Now that didn't seem to me quite playing the game. The program is as follows (all times are BST):</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Ross Davies and Mark Jones – 26 June @ 7pm</h3><h4 style="text-align: left;"><b><i>Arthur Conan Doyle and the Adventure of the Gaiola Malediction</i></b></h4><p>In April/May, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle vacations on his relatives' tiny paradise of an island estate (Gaiola) off the port of Naples, Italy, where he meets an Italian inventor, who claims to have automated the process of duplicating of sculptures. Conan Doyle buys the English rights to the patented machinery, partners with a colourful sculptor-contractor named W.G. Jones who turns out to be both dishonest and difficult to deal with (not quite a grifter, but pretty close!). </p><p>The whole thing turns into a business nightmare, but not before the plan and Conan Doyle's business (both ultimately unsuccessful) get widespread attention in the news media on both sides of the Atlantic. By June 1905, the madcap adventure is over.</p><p>There are many nifty visuals, and many interesting words in both the news coverage and the private correspondence (including some pretty clearly direct connections to a couple of the Sherlock Holmes stories). Smith called this short-tempered scion). Both wanted to see Sir Arthur recognized for the genius of his creation. (No doubt they also wanted to see some of that sweet royalty money for the estate, but that's a story for another time.)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But doesn't our assignment of Watson as the author acknowledge the true genius of Conan Doyle? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">His ability as a storyteller was so skilled that in some cases, contemporary readers couldn't discern fact from fiction. It has a price tag of £96,000 and is on view at his gallery at the Bluebird Garage in Chelsea, London."</p></blockquote><p>To be clear, <i>ATG</i> stated that this was Conan Doyle's design, rather than his own desk: </p><blockquote><p>"Only seven were made and two of these are owned by Goyard. One is in a French museum, three are in private collections (including this from Oulton). It was billed as a retrospection, not a resurrection. However, the public demand was so great following the serial publication of <i>The Hound</i>, and the financial offer so generous from Greenough Smith, editor of the <i>Strand Magazin</i>e, that Conan Doyle couldn't refuse.</p><p>Doyle's American publisher, McClure, Phillips & Company came up with a brilliant publicity campaign for the book: they disassembled the manuscript and offered them, as single sheets, to dealers who purchased copies of the book.</p><p>According to Heritage:</p><blockquote><p>"Unfortunately, due to the fact that this particular manuscript was written on highly acidic paper, and the individual pages were mounted with equally acidic backing material, most of the pages used in the promotion have not survived either their framing or their display conditions. Only a very small percentage exists today - and few are in as good condition as this particular leaf. This particular page is a highly desirable one — it contains actual mention of Sherlock Holmes — referred to as "Holmes"."</p></blockquote><p><br /></p><p>The leaf in question is the first page of Chapter XIII, titled "Fixing the Nets". It opens thusly:</p><blockquote><p>"We're at close grips at last," said Holmes, as we walked together across the moor. "What a nerve the fellow has! How he pulled himself together in the face of what must have been a paralysing shock when he found that the wrong man had fallen a victim to his plot. Of the estimated 185-page manuscript, there are only <a href="https://www.bestofsherlock.com/baskervilles-manuscript.htm" target="_blank">37 leaves</a> known to be in existence, according to Randall Stock's <a href="https://www.bestofsherlock.com/baskervilles-manuscript.htm" target="_blank">Best of Sherlock census</a>. Twenty-four are owned by institutions, ten are in the hands of private collectors, and the whereabouts of the other three are unknown (including <a href="http://www.bestofsherlock.com/mss/hound-manuscript-stolen.htm" target="_blank">one that was stolen</a>). </p><p>The only full chapter known to exist resides with the New York Public Library; it was the subject of the first volume of the BSI Press Manuscript Series, <i><a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2001/12/31/hound-baskervilles-ch11/" target="_blank">The Hound of the Baskervilles (Ch. XI.)</a></i>, and is the chapter titled "The Man on the Tor". </p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“I fancy that I see your Grace’s cheque-book upon the table” [PRIO]</h3><p>Get those checkbooks ready. This isn't going to be a small affair.</p><div>The last time a leaf from the <i>Hound </i>manuscript sold was <a href="https://www.bestofsherlock.com/ref/baskervilles-ms-christies-2012.htm" target="_blank">December 2012, when it went for more than $150,000</a>. The previous sale of another leaf was for $78,000 in December 2004.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>By comparison, the opening bid for this leaf (H.31 in Randall Stock's census) is <a href="https://historical.ha.com/itm/autographs/authors/sir-arthur-conan-doyle-autograph-manuscript-leaf-from-the-hound-of-the-baskervilles/a/6243-47171.s" target="_blank">$85,000</a> ($106,250 with the buyer's premium), but estimates are pegged at $170,000. </div><div><br /></div><div>Will it sell? Will it achieve the estimate? It was offered at auction twice before: in December 2011 (pre-sale estimate: $115,00-125,000) and April 2016 (pre-sale estimate $100,000-150,000), but went unsold in both cases. Given that the opening bid is well below each of those previous estimates, we're optimistic; however, the number of likely buyers for this is exceptionally low.
