I have tried to obtain it in an economical fashion for some time and have come up short.<br /> <br /> Well, look no further, Sherlockians and soundtrack fans. "We Were to Go to the Theatre." [BRUC]

Lee is an avid Sherlockian and a first-rate human being. He used to illustrate "From the Doctor's Diary," a cartoon that regularly appeared in <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/">The Baker Street Journal</a>.<br /><br />As a writer, Lee has worked on <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092455/">Star Trek: the Next Generation</a>, including the episode "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092455/">Ship in a Bottle</a>," in which Moriarty escapes from the holodeck computer.<br /><br />One of Lee's crowning achievements (in my opinion, at least) is his play <a href="http://www.gulliver.cc/stage/hw.htm">Holmes & Watson</a>, written in 1989. It was performed for participants of the 1990 Baker Street Irregulars weeken, to great acclaim. Didn't see it that weekend? Well, the play is running again, this time at <a href="http://www.newplayhouse.org/">The New Play House</a> at the Cultural Arts center in <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&amp;hl=en&q=Frederick,+MD&ie=UTF8&z=11&ll=39.413916,-77.411041&spn=0.265244,0.673599&om=1">Frederick, MD</a>. Performance dates are October 5-8, and October 12-15.<br /><br />One note: at the October 14 matinee, there will be a panel after the performance, featuring a discussion with the director. Greg Jordan of the <span style="font-style: italic;">Bluefield Daily Telegraph</span> (Bluefield, WV) has written a very nice first-person perspective about the importance of early encounters with books, titled <a href="http://www.bdtonline.com/editorials/local_story_263163731.html?keyword=secondarystory">Sherlock Holmes - and others - Can Inspire Life-Long Love of Books</a>.<br /><br />In addition to recounting his first meeting with Sherlock Holmes (a somewhat regular feature in <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/" style="font-style: italic;">The Baker Street Journal</a> - check our <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/currentvolume/archivedarticles.html">online archives</a> for an example), he also notes a youth literacy program called "A Bookcase for Every Child":<br /><span><br /><blockquote style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Participants in this project help lower income children in the 3 to 5 age bracket get more exposure to reading by giving them their very own bookcase and some gently used books.</blockquote><br />This is a wonderful gesture and an inspired program. Schultz, BSI ("The <span style="font-style: italic;">Gloria Scott</span>") crossed over the Reichenbach on September, 7, 2006. Bob was a long-time contributor to the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/">Baker Street Journal</a> and an early attendee of the annual Baker Street Irregulars dinner.<br /> <br /> His first contribution to the Journal was in the BSJ's infancy in the mid-1940s, and until his investiture in 2002, he hadn't attended a BSI dinner in over 50 years. Even in the midst of the January weather we've come to dread at the BSI weekends, Bob would venture down from Vermont (I suppose it was warmer, coming south) and, as a late octogenarian, navigate the streets of New York himself.<br /> <br /> He was a gentle and kind man, soft spoken, yet rugged as any outdoorsman. He witnessed the BSI of old and the current BSI, contributing to the schloarship in both epochs. His efforts were not without merit: in 2002, his article <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/images/2002%20Dating%20of%20Blood%20Stains%20Schultz.pdf">Upon the Dating of Bloodstains</a> was granted the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/morleymontgomeryaward.html">Morley-Montgomery Award</a>.<br /> <br /> His obituary, courtesy of the <i>Burlington Free Press</i>:<br /> <br /> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: 85%;"></span><br /> <blockquote style="font-family: trebuchet ms;"> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: 85%;">ROBERT SPENCER SCHULTZ III - Robert Spencer Schultz lll, 89, of South Burlington, died Sept. 7, 2006, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Ripton. Born July 1, 1917, in LaSalle, Ill., he was the son of Robert Spencer Schultz II and Elizabeth Letts Schultz. He was a proud and loyal graduate of Williams College, Class of 1939. After graduation, he worked for Econometrics in New York City and then for the War Department in Washington, D.C. during World War II. He returned to NYC and Econometrics where he met his wife, Jane Stern Schultz. He spent most of his career as an economist for Union Bag (Camp) Paper Corporation. He later worked for Mackay Shields and served on the New York Council of Economic Advisors under Governor Hugh Cary. He taught briefly at Fordham University. In 1983, he and Jane retired to South Burlington.</span><br /> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: 85%;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: 85%;">Bob had numerous local involvements. He was a volunteer for Shelburne Farms, the Shelburne Museum and the Champlain Shakespeare Festival and was an active member of the Chittenden County Historical Society. The fellowship he found at All Saints Episcopal Church in South Burlington was extremely important to him as were his friends in The Goose Club of the Alpha Inn, a local Sherlock Holmes group. He was a member of the Baker Street Irregulars and a contributor to the Baker Street Journal. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hiking and skiing and shared this love with his family. He learned to ski while at Williams and by the early 1960s, he was a Mad River Glen diehard. He was very active in the Scarsdale Ski Club before moving to Vermont. He and Jane were longtime members of the Appalachian Mountain Club and Green Mountain Club and both were members of the AMC's "Four Thousand Footer Club."</span><br /> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: 85%;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: arial; font-size: 85%;">Bob was predeceased by Jane, his wife of 59 years and the love of his life. He is survived by his three children and their families: a son, John Schultz and his wife Annette of Moretown; a daughter Barry (Barbara) King and her husband Warren of Ripton; a daughter Teddy (Edna) Ben Said and her husband Bechir of Lee, N.H.; and six grandchildren, Megan and Katie Schultz, Eliza and Amanda King and Azziza and Ramzi Ben Said. The human mind reels at the conflict between this man of science who created the world's foremost reasoner and a man who was so naive that no reasoning could change his beliefs.<br /> <br /> The Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal has written up <a href="https://gwern.net/doc/psychology/cognitive-bias/2006-polidoro-houdinisimpossibledemonstration.html">Houdini's Impossible Demonstration</a>, recounting Harry Houdini's attempt to smack some sense into Conan Doyle.<br /> <br /> To Conan Doyle's credit, he never wavered in his belief, even after Houdini tried to debunk those into whom Conan Doyle placed his faith. But in trying to convince a true believer, Houdini was a little too vain — he didn't reveal how he accomplished the trick. He simply said, "I can assure you that it was accomplished by trickery and by nothing else."<br /> <br /> This was incredibly short-sighted, as he was trying to coax a man out of believing in one thing that required no tangible proof (Spiritualism) and into believing in another thing without proof. Traditionally, one of the biggest obstacles Sherlockian authors have had to overcome is the seemingly limited audience size for whom they are writing. Excellent books have been written but in many cases have been priced so high as to severely reduce the number of readers who might purchase them.<br /><br />There is an excellent option available at <a href="http://www.lulu.com/" style="color: rgb(51, 255, 51); font-weight: bold;">Lulu.com</a>. It is a self-service printing site for authors. The Baker Street Irregulars has lost its oldest member. Ronald Mansbridge, BSI ("A Case of Identity") has passed beyond the Reichenbach.<br /><br />His first BSI dinner was in 1936, but he didn't receive his titular investiture until 1998. An Englishman by birth, he traced his family's roots to the Mansbridge Hundred, a pre-Norman district along Southampton Water in Hampshire.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.legacy.com/NYTimes/DeathNotices.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonID=19129716">His obituary</a>, courtesy of the New York Times:<br /><br /><blockquote>MANSBRIDGE-Ronald, 100. On September 1, 2006, peacefully in his home in Weston, Connecticut. Born 11 November 1905 in England, son of George Frederick Mansbridge, inventor of the Mansbridge electrical condenser, and Florence Quye Mansbridge. Educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, Mansbridge founded the American Branch of Cambridge University Press and served as its manager for 40 years. Beloved husband of the late Georgia St Clair Mullan (d. 1988) and Janet Dunning Van Duyn (d. 2003). Remembering Barbara Iris Van Buskirk, née Ulan, ASH

Keever Jr. Solace Center.<blockquote><p>She was a daughter of Samuel Ulan of New City, N.Y., and the late Mildred Lindenbaum Ulan.</p> <p>Mrs. Van Buskirk was an accomplished craftsperson, specializing in jewelry and fiber arts and was the designer for the Center For Diversity Education. She was an art director at Bantam/Doubleday/Dell Publishers and a beloved member of Beth Ha Tephila. Barbara was a member of Mystery Writers of America and of the Adventuress' of Sherlock Holmes. She was a loving wife, mother, sister and daughter who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.</p> <p>In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband of 21 years, Charles L. Rockford, Illinois Will Feature Sherlock Holmes Events

Mutant Dog or Hound from Hell?

<h4 style="text-align: center;"> <b>"Had I not known this legend" [HOUN] </b></h4> <br /> A recent headline "<a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/id/14383883/ns/us_news-weird_news/t/dead-beast-marauding-hybrid-mutant/#.WaGa2CiGPb0" style="color: #000066; font-weight: bold;">Hybrid mutant found dead in Maine</a>" was arresting on its own, but the accompanying photograph was equally as alarming.<br /> <br /> Some sort of a beast was found dead on the side of the road in Maine, after having been hit by a car. Officials think it may have been a cross between a wild dog and a coyote or a wolf. But for those who cannot afford to travel to remote libraries, aren't aware of ongoing public auctions, or don't know private collectors, the electronic transmission of information is the next best thing to holding a valuable in one's hands.<br /> <br /> Some Sherlockians may view this wide dissemination of knowledge as counter to the very essence of what Christopher Morley was trying to create with the Baker Street Irregulars - that "whiskey and sodality" among a select few - but early members of the BSI created pamplets, booklets and publications to entertain and edify each other, originally at the annual dinners, then in print beyond that. And, as Brad notes, their correspondence was legend. But thanks to these writings in which they shared their experiences, we can enjoy them as well.<br /> <br /> The journey of Sherlockian discovery is a profoundly personal one. The ongoing series in <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/" style="color: #000066; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"><i>The Baker Street Journal</i></a>, "<a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/images/First%20Meeting%20by%20Tweed%20Roosevelt%20EDITED.pdf" style="color: #000066; font-weight: bold;">My First Meeting with Sherlock Holmes</a>" is a testament to the fact that each of us has come to enjoy the detective and the Game in vastly different ways. For thousands of people around the world, the Canon serves as an introduction to friendships in Sherlockian circles which extend many generations and families.<br /> <br /> In the Twenty-First Century, everyone is able to share his experience or her discoveries in a way that can be accessed and distributed by all. In 1985, Richard Lancelyn Green edited <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?link_code=ur2&tag=thebakerstree-20&amp;camp=1789&creative=9325&location=/gp/search%3F%26index=books%26keywords=%26quot%3Bletters%20to%20sherlock%20holmes%26quot%3B%26_encoding=UTF8" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-weight: bold;">Letters to Sherlock Holmes</a>, a compendium of some of the requests that arrived at the address over the years.<br /><br />According to the report, the movie will focus on the person living at that address, whose world is turned upside down when he gets one of these letters and decides to take on a real case.

For the uninitiated, I post the entire Constitution and Buy-Laws of the Baker Street Irregulars, as written by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmer_Davis" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;">Elmer Davis</a>.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Constitution</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Article I</span><br />The name of the society shall be the Baker Street Irregulars.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">Article II</span><br />Its purpose shall be the study of the Sacred Writings.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">Article III</span><br />All persons shall be eligible for membership who pass an examination in the Sacred Writings set by officer of the society, and who are considered otherwise suitable.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">Article IV</span><br />The officers shall be: a Gasogene, a Tantalus, and a Commissionaire.<br />The duties of the Gasogene shall be those commonly performed by a President.<br />The duties of the Tantalus shall be those commonly performed by a Secretary.<br />The duties of the Commissionaire shall be to telephone down for ice, White Rock, and whatever else may be required and available; to conduct all negotiations with waiters; and to assess the members pro rata for the cost of same.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Buy-Laws</span><br /><ol><li>An annual meeting shall be held on January 6th, at which the canonical toasts shall be drunk which were published in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Saturday Review</span> of January 27, 1934; after which the members shall drink at will.</li><li>The current round shall be bought by any member who fails to identify, by title of story and context, and quotation from the Sacred Writings submitted by any other member.</li><ol><li>Qualification A: If two or more members fail so to identify, a round shall be bought by each of those so failing.</li><li>Qualification B: If the submitter of the quotation, upon challenge, fails to identify it correctly, he shall buy the round.<br /></li></ol><li>Special meetings may be called at any time or any place by any one of three members, two of whom shall constitute a quorum.</li><ol><li>Qualification A: If said two people are of opposite sexes, they shall use care in selecting the place of meeting, to avoid misinterpretation (or interpretation either, for that matter).</li><li>Qualification B: If two such persons of opposite sexes be clients of the Personal Column of the <span style="font-style: italic;">Saturday Review</span>, the foregoing does not apply; such persons being presumed to let their consciences be their guides.<span style=";font-family:";font-size:11;" ></span></li></ol><li>All other business shall be left for the monthly meeting.</li><li>There shall be no monthly meeting. </li></ol>

"Well, I Chose August..." [LAST]

August 7, 2006, to be precise. This is the date I've chosen to unveil the feature of the <span style="font-style: italic;">"utmost coolness"</span> to the Sherlockian community.<br /><br />I started with Peter Blau's master list of Sherlockian societies, then mapped them all on a new site called Frappr in order to give us the beginnings of <a href="http://www.frappr.com/sherlockians" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102); font-weight: bold;">Sherlockians Around the World</a>.
