We've mentioned Jack Benny previously on our program (see <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose92">Episode 92</a>, beginning at 3:26). The legendary Hollywood entertainer's career spanned vaudeville, radio, television, and film, and he was noted for his uncanny timing.<br />
<br />
Part of the attraction of Jack Benny's persona was that he was always being upstaged by his co-stars Mary Livingstone (his real-life wife), his butler Rochester, his orchestra leader Phil Harris, his announcer Don Wilson, and even his violin teacher, Professor Le Blanc (played by Mel "Man of a Thousand Voices" Blanc). Jack was supposed to be a cheapskate who didn't know the first thing about anything.<br />
<br />
All of this was even funnier because in real life, Jack was one of the most generous people in Hollywood who knew everything about comedy there was to know (and quite a bit about music). A raised eyebrow or a slight turn of the head with a deadpan look at the audience could turn everything upside down.<br />
<br />
So imagine when Jack and his ensemble were able to stage <a href="https://youtu.be/rhf_soW72eE?t=8m43s">their own version of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i></a> as Jack was planning to return to his hometown of Waukegan, IL. This show was originally broadcast on June 11, 1939 - just two and a half months after Twentieth Century Fox released the Basil Rathbone / Nigel Bruce version of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> on March 31, 1939.<br />

We've all had experience listening to Sherlock Holmes audio programs. Right? RIGHT??<br />

And just as we have favorite screen adaptations, we also have our special audio heroes as well. Rathbone and Bruce, Gielgud and Richardson, Shelley and Hobbes, Merrison and Williams... they all bring to mind a feeling of nostalgia for the stories.<br />
<br />
But there are many original episodes that have gone missing. And our guest, Ian Dickerson, has managed to track down some of the original scripts of the Rathbone/Bruce radio series that were lost to the ages. Between the Edith Meiser era and the Anthony Boucher / Denis Green era, there was another writer — one known more for his stories about Simon Templar than anything else. And Ian managed to unearth them and put together a fine book on the topic.<br />

Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Their names are forever linked, just as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are. And it is their remarkable seven-year collaboration that we discuss in this episode.<br />

You've seen their likenesses in still photos. You've probably heard their voices in audio recordings. And you've had a chance to see their films from the late 1930s and early 1940s, whether in the theater, as a Saturday afternoon matinee on television, public TV pledge drive, or perhaps on a DVD or on YouTube.<br />

The point is this: regardless of your level of fondness or distaste for this pairing, they remain iconic and inextricably linked to their portrayals of the world's greatest detective and his medical companion. Yes, it was Nigel Bruce's version of Dr. Watson that was called <i>boobus Britannicus</i>, but it seemed to fit with the times and with the air of the series.<br />

We take you on a journey from their initial outing in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> and <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i> in 1939 at 20th Century Fox, to their radio drama collaboration under Edith Meiser and later Anthony Boucher, and through the 12-film series under the Universal banner. The actor Peter Sallis <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-40165443" target="_blank">has passed away</a> at the age of 96.<br />
<br />
Sallis was best known in the UK for his role as Norman "Cleggy" Clegg in <i>Last of the Summer Wine</i> from its first episode in 1973 until the series concluded in 2010. He was the only actor who appeared on every one of the 295 episodes.<br />
<br />
Internationally — and cross-generationally — he was better known as the voice of Wallace, the cheese lover and inventor, in the Wallace and Gromit animated films by Nick Park.<br />
<br />
But in the world of Sherlock Holmes, Peter Sallis will forever hold our imagination and admiration for his turn as Dr. Watson in the stage production of <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Musical-Adventure-Sherlock-Original-Broadway/dp/B000CQQGVE?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">Baker Street</a></i> in 1965. The Jerome Coopersmith / Ray Jessel musical starred Fritz Weaver as Sherlock Holmes, Martin Gable as Professor Moriarty, and Inga Swenson as Irene Adler.<br />

We interviewed <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/11/remembering-fritz-weaver.html#.WTW29GgrLb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Fritz Weaver</a> and spoke with him about his experience in the <i>Baker Street</i> in <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose26" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Episode 26</a> of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere:<br />

Of all of the audio clips we played from the soundtrack, we did not have an opportunity to play Sallis's signature number as Watson, "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwVwhqUjZOQ" target="_blank">A Married Man</a>." In this emotional number, Watson recalls his life before meeting his beloved Mary, their life together, and then his eventual status as a widower:<br />

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Sallis" target="_blank">Peter Sallis</a> had a long and varied career on the stage, television and film. And astute listeners and followers of the BBC Radio adaptation of Sherlock Holmes (ref. <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose68" target="_blank">Episode 68</a> and <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose69" target="_blank">Episode 69</a> with Bert Coules) may recall Sallis as Jonas Oldacre in "The Adventure of the Norwood Builder" with Clive Merrison as Sherlock Holmes and Michael Williams as Dr. Watson.<br />
<br />
Sallis stopped performing in 2010 after he gradually lost his sight due to macular degeneration. We had asked his manager for assistance in having Sallis on as a guest on IHOSE, but he graciously declined. Even so, we're fortunate to have a record of Sallis's performances in the instances mentioned above.<br />

Actor Andrew Sachs <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/12/01/andrew-sachs-much-loved-fawlty-towers-actor-manuel-role-dies/" target="_blank">passed away on November 23</a>, aged 86. He was most well known for his role as Manuel, the hapless Spanish waiter in <i>Fawlty Towers</i> with John Cleese. But Sherlockians knew him for his turn as Dr. Watson on the radio plays on BBC.<br />
<br />
Bert Coules, whom we interviewed on <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose68" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Episode 68</a> and <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose69" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Episode 69</a> (click for more), was the head writer for the series that dramatized the entire 60 stories of the Sherlock Holmes canon and starred Clive Merrison as Sherlock Holmes and Michael Williams as Dr. John Watson.<br />
<br />
After Williams' death in 2001, the BBC green lit 16 more episodes, collected in <i><a href="http://merrisonholmes.com/further_adventures.php" target="_blank">The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</a></i>, which Coules wrote. At this point, Andrew Sachs had been selected to play Watson, but Coules was still under a confidentiality agreement when he spoke to Scarlet Street in an interview, as he recounts in his book <i><a href="http://ihose.co/221BBC" target="_blank">221 BBC</a></i>:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I can tell you that our new Watson is a well-known actor, most closely associated with one particular role (and one about as far removed from Dr. John H. Watson as it's possible to get) but with a very wide and varied career in stage, film, TV and radio, and experience as both a writer and director. He will bring exactly the same qualities to the part as did the late Michael Williams: a fine sense of intelligence and strength, a refusal to play second fiddle, a subtle humour and a great and long-suffering affection for Holmes."</blockquote>
<br />
Once Sachs took over the part, it was seamless, picking up perfectly from where Williams left off, yet bringing his own individuality to the role. According to Roger Johnson, BSI ("<i>Pall Mall Gazette</i>"), writing in <i>Sherlock</i> magazine:<br />
<blockquote>
"Sachs' Watson is quietly assured, thoughtful, courteously charming and wryly humorous... a self-confident man, modest and above all, likeable."</blockquote>
<br />
Sachs had initially intended to play Watson like Nigel Bruce, but series director Patrick Rayner gave him the best advice. Says Sachs:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I started out thinking of bumbling old Nigel Bruce but Patrick put me right. He told me 'Just say the words' - best advice ever."</blockquote>

But fans of Sherlock Holmes will remember Rees for his convincing and dramatic radio appearance as Sherlock Holmes in the 1988 BBC Radio production of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, which was written by Bert Coules. How many of us grew up listening to <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose68" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes on the radio</a>? Basil Rathbone, Clive Merrison, Carleton Hobbs, the names would become
synonymous with the Great Detective. The theatre of the mind offers listeners a
completely unique entertainment experience. Unlike film or the written word,
details are presented before you with little room for interpretation, radio
plays offers listeners the chance to create many of their own details through
subtle audio cues.<br />
<br />
The soft clattering of horse hoofs, the offhanded comment of
the beautiful scenery, or the cries of dismay over the Falls of Reichenbach,
all help us to fill in the gaps of the fictional world in whatever way we see
fit. Budgetary limitations, or unrealistic visuals need not apply. The Falls
can be enormous, a city street jam packed with people, or a vista pristine. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>

While radio was hit hard (especially in America) by television,
audio dramas have made a comeback in recent years thanks to the mass
distribution offered through the Internet. Technology and audio innovations
have opened the doors for people throughout the world to pursue their passions
and produce their own high quality audio dramas from the convenience of their
home computer.<o:p></o:p></div>

It was into this world that David Harnois chose to combine
his background in theatre and audio work, with his fandom of Sherlock Holmes,
to take on one of the most difficult tasks in Sherlockdom: adapt the full
canon!<o:p></o:p></div>

After having acted as Holmes in a local theatre production,
David was not eager to give up the role. Armed with his experiences on the
stage and help from friends and colleagues, David began work to adapt the canon
into a workable audio format. <o:p></o:p></div>

<a href="http://iamlostwithoutmyboswell.com/" target="_blank">I Am Lost Without My Boswell</a> first started in early 2014
with a goal of adapting every story in the canon, with a full cast of
characters comprised of actors and fans alike. After just over a year of work,
David’s passion project had produced a dramatization of "<a href="https://soundcloud.com/holmesboswell/a-scandal-in-bohemia" target="_blank">A Scandal in Bohemia</a>"
and "<a href="https://soundcloud.com/holmesboswell/the-red-headed-league" target="_blank">The Red Headed League</a>," and are well on their way to producing the third
installment, "A Case of Identity."<br />

We sat down with David to ask him some
questions about the project, where he gets his inspiration, and how <i>you</i> can
audition for a role in the next story.<o:p></o:p></div>

<b>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere: <i>Can you recall what your first exposure to Sherlock
Holmes was?</i></b><o:p></o:p></div>

<b>David Harnois:</b> I'm sure as a kid I saw <i>The Great Mouse Detective</i>, and I
know I saw the Wishbone episodes of “A Scandal in Bohemia” and “The Hound of
the Baskervilles.” Holmes was a character I sort of worked my way back around
to. I read some mystery novels when I was in middle school, my favorite comic
book character is Batman, it was really a matter of time. When the Robert Downey, Jr. film came out, I thought that maybe it was time to actually read
the stories. The BBC's <i>Sherlock</i> and the Granada Holmes were the final nails in
that coffin. <o:p></o:p></div>

<b><br /></b>
<b>IHOSE: <i>Can you tell me a little bit about your professional
background? Do you have any training in audio editing?</i></b><o:p></o:p></div>

<b>DH:</b> I grew up doing theatre. I started when I was 11, and
continued on throughout my childhood. I graduated with my BA in Theatre in 2009
from the University of Northern Iowa. The audio work comes from a combination
of my theatrical background, being in a band, and my years as a karaoke DJ.
Between the band and the DJing, I gained a pretty good ear for balancing audio,
and working with audio equipment. I started doing sound design work in college,
did it for the theatre I worked at, and have a regular freelance gig I do once
a semester. My training in it was all pretty much on the job.<o:p></o:p></div>

<b>IHOSE: <i>What prompted you to do your own audio dramatization? </i></b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<b>DH: </b>I was given the opportunity to play Holmes onstage in a
production of “Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily” (produced by
Waterloo Community Playhouse and written by Katie Frogrette). So I cut off my
hair after 9 years, shaved after 4 1/2 and took my turn in Baker Street. After
the show was done, I started realizing that I liked playing Holmes so much I
didn't really want to stop. I thought the easiest way to keep doing it was
something like this. I put the idea out to my Facebook friends, and they
responded with a resounding, “YES! Do it!” Plus I got to keep my hair and my
goatee. <o:p></o:p></div>

<b>IHOSE: <i>How did you go about the scripting process?</i></b><o:p></o:p></div>

<b>DH: </b>The nice thing about the bulk of the stories being public
domain is that the text is all readily available online. I just copy and paste
the story text into a new document and start to reformat it like a script. I
indicate which text to not speak; you'll notice a large lack of 'he said', 'she
said'. I try to make it flow much more conversationally. I also make
indications about text to read, but that it also indicates a sound effect. My
personal copy of “A Case of Identity” is highlighted in 4 colors: 1 for general
highlighting of lines, 1 for words I need to watch from a pronunciation
standpoint, 1 for words not in English, and 1 for sound effects. <o:p></o:p></div>

<b>IHOSE: <i>Was this your first time producing your own audio
production? What was the most difficult part of the process?</i><o:p></o:p></b></div>

<b>DH: </b>This was indeed my first go at something like this. I was
fortunate to have a lot of support early on, so I was able to get a nice
microphone right off the bat, which was a big help. I suppose the most
difficult part was, and still is, finding a consistent place to record. During
SCAN I was recording at work after hours, which actually got me in trouble
(which is a whole other story). For REDH we were able to record in Jabez
Wilson's (John Jensen) house. <o:p></o:p></div>

<b>IHOSE: </b>With "A Scandal in Bohemia" and "The Red-Headed League" under your belt, how's the production going
on "A Case of Identity"? <o:p></o:p></div>

<b>DH: </b>It's going well so far! We have a cast, and we've done a
read-through of the script. We'll be recording this coming Sunday at the
Waterloo Public Library. Hopefully we can knock the recording out in one
session. Then it's on to the editing.<o:p></o:p></div>

<b>IHOSE: <i>What's the story you are looking forward to producing the
most?</i></b><o:p></o:p></div>

<b>DH: </b>Ooo, <i>that</i> is a good question. I'm actually looking forward
to “The Yellow Face,” because outside of demonstrating that Holmes isn't always
right, I think it ultimately displays a good message about tolerance,
understanding, and honesty that is never bad to be reminded of. From a
challenge standpoint, I'm excited and terrified for <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>. The
novels are going to take a lot more work, and a lot more time to produce. But
it will be worth it. <o:p></o:p></div>

After selling a dramatized version of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> to the BBC (which starred Roger Rees), Bert was given the green light to dramatize all 60 Sherlock Holmes stories, serving as the head writer.<br />

Bert discusses the casting of the new series, including what was required in a Watson that was an equal partner - and a zinger aimed at Nigel Bruce - as well as the increased comfort felt by the characters and actors over the course of the series recording.You may be surprised to learn how the stories were assigned to the writing team (a scientific method from the BBC, no doubt) and how the writers were "imaginatively faithful" to the stories. Not to mention the backstory behind an alternative ending to "The Solitary Cyclist."<br />

Of particular interest for us in this show is a multitude of sound clips from the BBC series - including the music that played such a prominent role in some episodes. We did a bit of our own sound design in this episode in keeping with the spirit of the theme.<br />

We also discuss some of the more intriguing guest stars on the series, such as Peter Sallis, Desmond Llewelyn, Brian Blessed and Tom Baker, as well as the "new" Watson during <i>The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>, Andrew Sachs. Bert has a great story about how he ended the series in a manner than ensured it will not be continued.<br />
