And for the uninitiated, it's just a matter of not knowing what you need to survive the BSI Weekend.<br /><br />This is the <b>ninth </b>annual installment of this post — the first of which was inspired by interviewing several members of the Baker Street Irregulars — including some newer members who might have a less distant memory of their first Weekend, and some who have been at it literally for decades. Information has been updated to reflect changes in the city as well as in technology.</div><div><br /></div><div>And this year, the ongoing pandemic has incurred some changes as well.<br /><br /><br />And if there are any additional tips that you think would be helpful to attendees, please feel free to add your own as a comment below. While it's not Tapanuli fever or the black Formosa corruption, it's a good idea to take precautions.</li><li>The first thing to note is that all events hosted by the Baker Street Irregulars require proof of vaccination for entry. The virus situation is always changing, so please visit the B<a href="https://files.bakerstreetirregulars.com/bsi-event-covid-19.pdf" target="_blank">SI Event Covid-19 requirements PDF</a> for the latest details. And check that PDF again on January 11 in case there are any last-minute changes.</li><li>If you're doing non-BSI things in New York, the city also requires proof of vaccination for indoor activities such as dining.</li><li>And it wouldn't hurt to wear a mask when you're indoors and around a lot of people as well. </li><li><b style="font-style: italic;">Remember:</b><i> Your health and the health of loved ones at home when you return are of great concern to people who like to share your company at these events. </i>❤️</li></ul></div><div><ul><li><b>PLEASE NOTE: </b>To get the latest BSI event news, go to the BSI website and sign up for the free <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/bsi-news-via-email" target="_blank">News from the BSI</a> email service.</li></ul></div><div><br /><h3>Bags 🧳</h3><ul><li>Make sure that you have plenty of room to bring home books that you buy. If you have to bring an extra bag that you can fold up and put in your suitcase, do so. </li><li>Some suggest bringing a plastic shopping bag to the BSI dinner, as it makes carrying the dinner packet around a little easier, especially if you plan to go to another venue afterward. </li><li>You might also consider <b>bringing a shopping bag to the Merchants Room</b> on Saturday to carry your various purchases. Not all merchants provide bags; carting away your haul is <i>your</i> responsibility. And you <i>do</i> want a haul, don't you?</li></ul><br /><h3>Meeting Others 📇</h3><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Bring business cards. You will be meeting a lot of new people, and you will be sharing contact information. Put as many as you think that you will need in your pack, and then double it. And be sure to include all modes of contacting you, including website, Twitter handle, etc. </li><li>If you're in need of a good card, the <a href="http://moo.com/">Moo</a> does a splendid job and <a href="http://vistaprint.com/">VistaPrint</a> has a fast turnaround time. </li><li>If you want to make sure you get your table mates to sign your menu, bring a pen to the dinner.</li><ul><li><b><i>Pro tip</i></b>: there's usually a pen in the dinner packet.</li></ul><li>Allow yourself time to schmooze with other Sherlockians. This is the fastest way to make new friends, who will quickly become old friends. </li></ul><br /><h3>Comportment / Etiquette 🤝</h3><ul><li><b>Do</b> tell people how good it is to see them again — or to meet them for the first time after having known them only online. <b>Do</b> tell them that you miss them in the intervening months between BSI weekends. <b>Do</b> tell them how invaluable they are to you as a Sherlockian comrade-in-arms and friend and how much you value their friendship. </li><li>If you're scheduled to speak at an event, be mindful not to overdo the alcohol beforehand. Dutch courage is usually inappropriate in such circumstances. </li><li>In this hyper-connected world, it's easy to forget that there are those attending the weekend for whom "it is always 1895" — or nearly so. When you're taking photographs, please be mindful of those who are firmly rooted in the 20th century and who might not want to appear on your  timeline by <u>asking their permission</u> to share your photos of them online. Common courtesy is timeless.</li></ul><div><br /></div><h3>Attire 🥿 🧥</h3><ul><li>Bring comfortable shoes. The weekend inevitably includes a lot of walking. </li><li>This one is especially for the ladies: it's useful to have a change of shoes in your handbag so the stilettos don't murder you by the end of the evening (or vice versa). </li><li>Bring warm clothes. It is winter in New York, and non-Sherlockian New York friends say they know when we are in town because we bring really bad weather. </li><li>Dress in layers. Many times the weather can be cold, but there have been instances in New York in January when we could – and did – comfortably walk about the streets without even a jacket on. </li></ul><br /><h3>Money 💰</h3><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Bring small bills. They will come in handy as you share taxis going from place to place, and you’ll find them handy when tipping helpful service employees. </li><ul><li><b><i>Pro tip</i></b>: We prefer withdrawing $2 bills from the bank and bringing them with us to make things extra efficient.</li></ul><li>Bring a checkbook to the Merchants Room as not everyone takes credit cards and you may find an item you must have. </li><li>If you see something you're interested in at the Merchants Room and you can afford it, don't wait until your second sweep of the room – it will probably be gone by then.</li><li>Most of the vendors in the Merchants Room are very kind and understanding people, and many are also collectors or Sherlockians themselves. If you would care to haggle with them, they're likely open to it. It can't hurt to ask.</li><li>The BSI and Wessex Press tables will accept <b>credit cards, PayPal and Apple Pay</b>.</li><li>Estimate, on the top side, what you expect to spend – and then double it. That might get you through. 💸</li></ul><br /><h3>Time 🕰️</h3><ul><li>If you have any health conditions, allow yourself time to go back to your hotel room for periodic rests. Many find these rests invaluable, enabling them to enjoy the weekend despite their condition. Schedule your time. </li><li>Know when you need to be places (including when you need to catch the train/plane back home). </li><li>Count on it taking some time to get a cab amongst the other Sherlockians who may be headed to the same events as you.</li><li>Alternatively, download a ride-hailing app (such as Uber, Lyft or Via) to help you avoid these waits. <b>See below for more details and a way to save money on rides</b>.</li></ul><br /><h3>Getting Around 🚕 🚇 🚶</h3><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Hey, Magellan, guess what? You have the power of a global satellite navigation system in the palm of your hand. That is, if you have a smartphone. Google Maps or Apple Maps are indispensable for getting around, by foot, taxi, or public transportation.</li><li>If you want something customized to New York, there are other apps to choose from: <a href="https://citymapper.com/nyc" target="_blank">Citymapper</a>, <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=guide.unitedstates.newyork.prod&hl=en_US&gl=US" target="_blank">New York Guide for Android</a> and iOS has the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/new-york-travel-guide-offline/id319296365?mt=8">New York Travel Guide and Offline Map</a>.</li></ul><div><br /></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>If you don't like using the map app on your phone, print out a street map of the city with the places you need to be circled or otherwise identified. Many things are within walking distance, but it is good to know you are starting out in the right direction (or know when to turn). </li><li>Download and print the <a href="http://www.bsiweekend.com/2019/12/summary-of-events.html" target="_blank">Summary of Weekend Events</a> from <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/">bsiweekend.com</a> (and seen below), or bookmark it on your smartphone. </li></ul><div><br /></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>If you want to go to Otto Penzler's <a href="http://mysteriousbookshop.com/" target="_blank">Mysterious Bookshop</a> and are staying at The Westin Grand Central Hotel, the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to go is by subway. From Grand Central take a <b>4</b> or <b>5</b> express train <b>two</b> stops to <b>Brooklyn Bridge Station</b>; it is a very short walk over to Otto's. Don't take a local (which makes 10 stops). The express is about five minutes. </li><li>Download the <b>MYmta app</b> from the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mymta/id1297605670?mt=8">App Store</a> or <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=info.mta.mymta&hl=en">Google Play</a> for navigating the subway. </li><li>Pool funds with others to buy regular per-ride <b><a href="http://web.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm">MetroCards</a></b>. These can be shared by up to four people on each trip and are good for one transfer between subway/bus or between buses on uptown/crosstown routes within 2 hours.</li><ul><li>If you're 65 or older, present ID for a reduced fare MetroCard – $2.75 for two rides with the same transfer provisions noted above. <b>Note:</b> a 65+ MetroCard <b><i>cannot</i></b> be shared and you must find a live 'token booth' clerk to inspect your ID – reduced fare not available in machines.</li><li>If you reach the end of the Weekend with a balance on your MetroCard, return to New York more frequently! Or give your card to local-area Sherlockians.</li></ul></ul><div><br /></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Download a ride-hailing app such as <a href="https://lyft.com/i/SCOTT726787" target="_blank">Lyft</a> or Uber. </li><ul><li>We highly recommend <a href="http://ridewithvia.com/" target="_blank"><b>Via</b></a>, which costs only $5 per ride anywhere in Manhattan and is one of the best values from the airport. Use the code <b><a href="http://ridewithvia.com/">scott5q3</a></b> to sign up and get a free ride.</li><li>If you'd like a code for Lyft, use <a href="https://lyft.com/i/SCOTT726787">SCOTT726787</a> to sign up and receive a $5 credit towards rides.</li></ul><li><b>Pro Tip:</b> </li><ul><li><a href="http://ridewithvia.com/" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">Via</a> offers the <b>1-week Manhattan 24/7 <a href="https://support.ridewithvia.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002370132-What-is-the-ViaPass-" target="_blank">ViaPass</a></b>, which is a great option if you're planning on non-subway transportation. It will give you up to <b>4 rides per day</b> (all day!) of up to $12 each in Manhattan (most Via rides are $5 or less) and will give you <b>20% off</b> any rides to the boroughs or airports. There is an additional nominal charge for +1s. The cost for a 1-week Manhattan 24/7 ViaPass is <b>$89 + tax</b>.</li></ul></ul><br /><h3>Logistics 📝</h3><ul><li>Bring your event payment confirmations, just in case of a glitch in the system. </li><li>Also, everything is pretty centrally located, but it's a good idea to have a list of your schedule with the addresses of the venues so that you don't suddenly find yourself asking, where the devil am I supposed to be right now? </li><li>The heat during the BSI dinner has been uncomfortable in years past in the Yale Club (potentially dangerously uncomfortable a few years ago) – if this happens again, vests/waistcoats are not advised. Unless you're <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcaric/8379354330/">Mattias Bostrom</a>. </li></ul><br /><h3>The Unscheduled 📅</h3><ul><li>If possible, make breakfast plans with other Sherlockians (unless you prefer to eat breakfast alone – saving energy for later conversations).</li><li>To some, the secret to enjoying the jam-packed weekend is to find private, unpublicized events for more intimate interactions. How to find these? “<i>You know my methods. Apply them</i>.” </li></ul><br /><h3>Dining 🍽️</h3>What? You’re not getting enough food between events? Thankfully there are gaps that allow a Sherlockian to venture places on his or her own. And of course, there are plenty of restaurants in and near Grand Central Station, which is in great proximity to the Yale Club and the Westin Grand Central Hotel.<br /><ul><li>The restaurant scene in NYC has changed drastically during the pandemic. Some old favorites may no longer be there; some may have restricted hours or dining arrangements.</li><li>Check <b><a href="https://www.opentable.com/landmark/restaurants-near-grand-central-station" target="_blank">Open Table</a></b> for restaurants that take reservations; they offer free booking and allow you to see availability of tables by time and by number of seats. </li><li>Several Sherlockians like to go to the <b><a href="http://www.oysterbarny.com/">Oyster Bar</a></b> for dinner after the Thursday night lecture. There are a number of <b><a href="https://www.grandcentralterminal.com/restaurants/" target="_blank">Grand Central Restaurants</a></b> inside. </li><li>For a more comprehensive listing of eateries nearby, check <b><a href="https://www.tripadvisor.com/RestaurantsNear-g60763-d103371-Grand_Central_Terminal-New_York_City_New_York.html" target="_blank">TripAdvisor</a></b>, <b><a href="https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Restaurants+Near+Grand+Central+Station&find_loc=New+York%2C+NY" target="_blank">Yelp</a></b>,</li><li>And heaven forbid, don't forget about the <a href="http://www.redflamenyc.com/">Red Flame</a>, the perennial favorite next door to the Algonquin Hotel on W. 44th Street.</li></ul><br /><h3>Online 📱</h3>Whether you're in New York for the festivities or sequestered at home, it might be worthwhile to follow along online. Nor even spiritual, for that matter. He was driven by logic.</div><div><br /></div><div>Remember in "The Sussex Vampire," he said "The world is big enough for us. No ghosts need apply."</div><div><br /></div><div>We could assume that he would place the Holy Ghost into that category as well. </div><div><br /></div><div>However, he acknowledges that there is a higher power than any human can ascertain, and his famous "moss rose" soliloquy in "The Naval Treaty" is often cited as evidence of that: </div><blockquote><div>"Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers."</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>And Sherlock Holmes was at least familiar with the Bible (from his school days, no doubt), as he was able to dig up the reference to David and Bathsheba in "The Creeping Man":</div><blockquote><div>"My biblical knowledge is a trifle rusty, I fear, but you will find the story in the first or second of Samuel."</div></blockquote><div>While he wasn't likely to say prayers — even when on the brink of the Reichenbach Falls — Christopher Morley, founder of the Baker Street Irregulars, wrote one that transcends all religious beliefs. A prayer that we can all enjoy this holiday season, or year-round.</div><div><br /></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Sherlock Holmes's Prayer</h2><div>by Christopher Morley</div><div><br /></div><div><div>[1] Grant me, O spirit of Reason, matter for Deduction, Intuition, and Analysis; plenty of three-pipe problems, that I may avoid the cowardice of seven percent cocaine, or at least substitute something a little special in white wines.</div><div><br /></div><div>[2] Grant me newspapers, telegrams, and the grind of carriage wheels against the kerb; the meditative breakfast at morning; the unexpected client in the night-time. Harris, someone calling himself "Crimson Jack" is recreating the murders of Jack the Ripper. The book beautifully sets the stage with a minor case that introduces us to a Sherlock Holmes, who's been taking up government work and a John Watson who's volunteering at a hospital to do his part for the war effort. The immediate mystery takes place against larger political questions: about supporting a fading empire, maintaining public morale, and changing professions and roles. <p></p><p>That's best seen with one of the new characters, Gail Preston, an American radio journalist. She's brash, smart, and puts Watson quite off-balance. She plays "charming and eccentric" quite well, manipulating suspects into divulging information. Then there's Commander Phil Rayner of military intelligence, sent to work with the group by Mycroft Holmes, and of course, old friend Inspector Lestrade.  </p><p>The language nicely gives a historic flavor while still being immensely readable. The Holmes we see here is witty and a bit prickly. He tends to investigate in disguise and keep his cards close, while Watson (our narrator) doggedly follows along where instructed. Harris does a nice job keeping Watson baffled without descending into the idiocy that has been the public perception of Bruce's portrayal. </p><p>I blush to admit that I haven't actually seen those movies (yet!), so I had some concern about how much I'd enjoy this version (coupled with a feeling that Jack the Ripper is as overdone as Moriarty), but I was surprised at just how much I enjoyed it! The characters work whenever you set them, I believe, but the wartime environment plays up the drama. I'm eager to see the films that inspired this novel, now, as well as more in this series. However, the public demand was so great following the serial publication of <i>The Hound</i>, and the financial offer so generous from Greenough Smith, editor of the <i>Strand Magazin</i>e, that Conan Doyle couldn't refuse.</p><p>Doyle's American publisher, McClure, Phillips & Company came up with a brilliant publicity campaign for the book: they disassembled the manuscript and offered them, as single sheets, to dealers who purchased copies of the book.</p><p>According to Heritage:</p><blockquote><p>"Unfortunately, due to the fact that this particular manuscript was written on highly acidic paper, and the individual pages were mounted with equally acidic backing material, most of the pages used in the promotion have not survived either their framing or their display conditions. Only a very small percentage exists today - and few are in as good condition as this particular leaf. This particular page is a highly desirable one — it contains actual mention of Sherlock Holmes — referred to as "Holmes"."</p></blockquote><p><br /></p><p>The leaf in question is the first page of Chapter XIII, titled "Fixing the Nets". It opens thusly:</p><blockquote><p>"We're at close grips at last," said Holmes, as we walked together across the moor. "What a nerve the fellow has! How he pulled himself together in the face of what must have been a paralysing shock when he found that the wrong man had fallen a victim to his plot. Of the estimated 185-page manuscript, there are only <a href="https://www.bestofsherlock.com/baskervilles-manuscript.htm" target="_blank">37 leaves</a> known to be in existence, according to Randall Stock's <a href="https://www.bestofsherlock.com/baskervilles-manuscript.htm" target="_blank">Best of Sherlock census</a>. Twenty-four are owned by institutions, ten are in the hands of private collectors, and the whereabouts of the other three are unknown (including <a href="http://www.bestofsherlock.com/mss/hound-manuscript-stolen.htm" target="_blank">one that was stolen</a>). </p><p>The only full chapter known to exist resides with the New York Public Library; it was the subject of the first volume of the BSI Press Manuscript Series, <i><a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2001/12/31/hound-baskervilles-ch11/" target="_blank">The Hound of the Baskervilles (Ch. XI.)</a></i>, and is the chapter titled "The Man on the Tor". </p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“I fancy that I see your Grace’s cheque-book upon the table” [PRIO]</h3><p>Get those checkbooks ready. This isn't going to be a small affair.</p><div>The last time a leaf from the <i>Hound </i>manuscript sold was <a href="https://www.bestofsherlock.com/ref/baskervilles-ms-christies-2012.htm" target="_blank">December 2012, when it went for more than $150,000</a>. The previous sale of another leaf was for $78,000 in December 2004.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>By comparison, the opening bid for this leaf (H.31 in Randall Stock's census) is <a href="https://historical.ha.com/itm/autographs/authors/sir-arthur-conan-doyle-autograph-manuscript-leaf-from-the-hound-of-the-baskervilles/a/6243-47171.s" target="_blank">$85,000</a> ($106,250 with the buyer's premium), but estimates are pegged at $170,000. </div><div><br /></div><div>Will it sell? Will it achieve the estimate? It was offered at auction twice before: in December 2011 (pre-sale estimate: $115,00-125,000) and April 2016 (pre-sale estimate $100,000-150,000), but went unsold in both cases. Given that the opening bid is well below each of those previous estimates, we're optimistic; however, the number of likely buyers for this is exceptionally low. He's been hired to answer Sherlock Holmes' mail. Well, the messages that people send to 221B Baker Street, one of the most famous addresses of all time. <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3nQLaNi" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock's Secretary</a></i> is a present-day mystery novel that begins when someone steals some of Sherlock's letters. </p><p>Addy and true crime podcaster (and object of Addy's crush) Zabel Carvalho follow the clues to find out who's behind the theft and why. Along the way, they discover a ridiculous group of exaggerated personalities, including a small group of local Holmes Society members who can't agree on anything. </p><p>There's also a terrible never-seen 1960s TV movie about Sherlock Holmes that plays a role. The desire to find a missing TV episode is one many fans will relate to. They will likely also appreciate the scene-setting references. Sidney Paget, Benedict Cumberbatch, Basil of Baker Street, <a href="https://ihose.co/ihose185" target="_blank">William S. Baring-Gould</a>, and Jonny Lee Miller, among others, all get a passing mention. </p><p>It's the details that caught me. I have no idea whether this is a real job [<i><a href="https://www.economist.com/1843/2021/10/06/the-curious-incident-of-sherlock-holmess-real-life-secretary" target="_blank">It was</a>. - Ed.</i>], or what happens to Sherlock's mail these days, but I loved thinking about how Addy handled the task and decorated his office. The discussions he and Zabel have, trying to apply Sherlock's methods and puzzle out what's going on, are the kinds of conversations many Sherlockians have envisioned, were they lucky enough to be pulled into a mystery. </p><p>This is a light, breezy read that moves quickly through its twists and turns. It is the first quality of a criminal investigator that he should see through a disguise.” [HOUN]</div></blockquote></div><div>The first quality. As in table stakes. The bare minimum. What you would expect from a professional consulting detective.</div><div><br /></div><div>And yet...</div><div><br /></div><div>In the very first novel, <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, Sherlock Holmes is fooled by an actor who visited Baker Street in the costume of an old woman:</div><div><blockquote><div>“Old woman be damned!” said Sherlock Holmes, sharply. “We were the old women to be so taken in. It must have been a young man, and an active one, too, besides being an incomparable actor. The get-up was inimitable.”</div></blockquote></div><div>This wasn't a terribly confidence-inspiring performance by the young detective, so full of himself in front of Watson with his <i>Book of Life</i> ego and his you-have-been-in-Afghanistan-I-perceive smugness.</div><div><br /></div><div>And then, when he was introduced to readers of the <i>Strand Magazine</i> in “A Scandal in Bohemia,” once again we find the Sherlock Holmes fooled by a disguise, although this time it was a woman dressed as a man:</div><div><blockquote><div>“I’ve heard that voice before,” said Holmes, staring down the dimly lit street. “Now, I wonder who the deuce that could have been.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>There would be other disguises in the Sherlock Holmes stories — James Windibank as Hosmer Angel, Neville St. Claire as Hugh Boone, Arthur Pinner as Harry Pinner, Sir Robert Norberton as Lady Beatrice Falder — all of which Holmes is able to detect. So his statement in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> was consistent with the image he wished to present to the world.</div><div><div><blockquote>“What you do in this world is a matter of no consequence,” returned my companion, bitterly. “The question is, what can you make people believe that you have done.” [STUD]</blockquote></div></div><div><br /></div><div>While Holmes would have us believe that he could never be fooled by a disguise, we know the truth. Glen and his wife Cathy Miranker curated the 221 objects, selected from Glen's impressive trove of over 8,000 items.</p><p>You'll hear how he came to acquire some of those objects, how he (or rather his erstwhile conscience) decides when to add an item to the collection, what it's like to prepare his most precious items to be loaned to an institution, and what to expect at the exhibition.</p><p>[Note: we did encounter a bit of sound disruption in during the recording; consider it akin to the static you might hear in old time radio shows.]</p><p>To honor Glen's appearance, our <b>Canonical Couplet</b> will get the winner a collectible from the IHOSE vaults.
