Watson, M.D., he's wallowing in his situation at the Criterion. After running into his old dresser, Stamford, the latter tells Watson of a peculiar student in the chemical laboratory. Watson naturally assumes, <b><i>“A medical student, I suppose?”</i></b></div><div><br /></div><div>It's a natural question from a medical man. Stamford indicates that Holmes's bedside manner may have been less than ideal for such a profession:</div><div><br /></div><div><blockquote><div>“Holmes is a little too scientific for my tastes—it approaches to cold-bloodedness.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>Yet in denying knowledge of Holmes's intended area of study, Stamford completely missed an opportunity as he expressed horror at Holmes's practices:</div><div><br /></div><div><blockquote><div>“When it comes to beating the subjects in the dissecting-rooms with a stick, it is certainly taking rather a bizarre shape.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>Might this not be the makings of a future coroner? After all, when he came across dead bodies in various stories in the Canon, Holmes took great care to examine the corpses. We're told that he examined Drebber's body carefully, even sniffing the dead man's lips (STUD).</div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes was able to tell that William Kirwan was shot at a distance of more than four yards, as he examined the wound on the body and noted an absence of powder-blackening on the clothes (REIG).</div><div><br /></div><div>Indeed, Holmes made a careful study of many dead bodies over the course of his documented career: </div><div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b><i>The Sign of the Four</i></b> — He examines Bartholomew Sholto’s rigid body at Pondicherry Lodge.</li><li><b>"The Boscombe Valley Mystery" </b>— He studies Charles McCarthy’s body at the crime scene.</li><li><b>"Silver Blaze"</b> — He looks at the body of John Straker, the murdered trainer.</li><li><b>"The Cardboard Box"</b> — He examines the severed human ears sent in a package.</li><li>"<b>The Resident Patient"</b> — He investigates the dead body of Blessington.</li><li><b>"The Norwood Builder"</b> — He inspects Jonas Oldacre’s supposed remains (which turned out to be those of a couple of rabbits)</li><li><b>"Black Peter"</b>— He examines Peter Carey’s corpse pinned to the wall.</li><li><b>"The Abbey Grange"</b> — He views Sir Eustace Brackenstall’s murdered body.</li><li><i><b>The Valley of Fear </b></i>— He examines the body of John Douglas in Birlstone Manor.</li><li><b>"The Bruce-Partington Plans"</b> — He inspects the corpse of Cadogan West, found on the tracks of the Underground.</li></ul></div></div><div>Sherlock Holmes would have made an excellent pathologist. Spanning from <i>Tom Sawyer</i> to <i>The Complete Sherlock Holmes</i> to <i>The Essays of Francis Bacon </i>and <i>Kidnapped</i>, the book is constructed in such a way that it doesn’t require a full commitment; you can read as many or as few essays as you like at a time, and you'll still walk away satisfied.<br /><br />It’s an entire book that has no beginning, middle, or end, and is simply chapter after chapter of reveries and personal anecdotes, wrapped in the dust jacket of literature.<div><br />In his preface to Walt Whitman’s <i>Leaves of Grass</i> we find a validation of People Like Us ― people enamored with books; people who can find meaning in pages that haven't been opened for decades (or longer); people who find inspiration in nearly everything they read.  In this preface wrote of one of his own favorite tributes to <i>Leaves of Grass</i>, penned by another author:<br /><blockquote>“The passage I mean was written in 1887 by Robert Louis Stevenson. I wish it might be printed on the wrapper of every copy of the <i>Leaves</i>:<br /></blockquote></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px;"><div><blockquote style="text-align: left;">‘<i>A book of singular service, a book which tumbled the world upside down for me, blew into space a thousand cobwebs of genteel and ethical illusion and, having thus shaken my tabernacle of lies, set me back again upon a strong foundation. . . But it is only a book for those who have the gift of reading</i>.’</blockquote></div></blockquote><blockquote style="text-align: left;">“How extraordinarily rare are those that have the Gift, is little guessed. To read not as a receptacle but as collaboratory; to read not merely to be amused or shocked or anaesthatized; to read, in short, to resensitize One’s Self — this is an achievement. It cannot and dare not happen too often.”</blockquote><p><br /></p><p>The collaboratory of Sherlockians is legendary, as we've build on Conan Doyle's original work and on the work of fellow students toiling in the vineyards, thanks in large part to Morley's encouragement.</p><p>Doubleday asked him in 1930 to write the preface to the memorial edition of <i>The Complete Sherlock Holmes </i>upon the death of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His preface “<b>In Memoriam Sherlock Holmes</b>” was more than an essay summing up the 60 stories; it was an introduction to the world of Sherlock Holmes devotees:</p><blockquote>“One of the blissful ways of passing an evening, when you encounter another dyed-in-the-blood addict, is to embark upon the happy discussion of minor details of Holmesiana. ‘Whose gold watch was it that had been so mishandled?’ one may ask; and the other counters with ‘What was the book that Joseph Stangerson carried in his pocket?’ Endless delicious minutiae to consider!”<div></div></blockquote><p><br /></p><p>Minutiae indeed. When Sir Hugo Baskerville, "a most wild, profane, and godless man" finds that the girl he kidnapped has made her escape, we get a sense as to his temper tantrum:</div><div><blockquote><div>"Then, as it would seem, he became as one that hath a devil, for, rushing down the stairs into the dining-hall, he sprang upon the great table, flagons and trenchers flying before him, and he cried aloud before all the company that he would that very night render his body and soul to the Powers of Evil if he might but overtake the wench. And while the revellers stood aghast at the fury of the man, one more wicked or, it may be, more drunken than the rest, cried out that they should put the hounds upon her."</div></blockquote></div><div>One has to imagine such a fellow as employing a few choice invectives.</div><div><br /></div><div>And although there are no profanities—even the use of "bloody" is reserved for actual sanguinary events—there are a number of insults that are peddled. </div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes himself is the subject of many of these, usually uttered by frustrated antagonists. We find a mixed bag.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Jokes as an Excuse</h3><div>Let's begin with father figures. Who can you think of that, when brought to justice, claimed they were only joking?</div><div><br /></div><div>The first is a stepfather, who, in collusion with Mary Sutherland's mother, duped her into believing Hosmer Angel was a real suitor in "A Case of Identity": </div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>“It was only a joke at first,” groaned our visitor.</div><div>“We never thought that she would have been so carried away.”</div></blockquote><div></div></div><div><br /></div><div><div>In "The Norwood Builder," Jonas Oldacre was smoked out of his hiding place after John Hector McFarlane was accused of his murder:</div><div></div><blockquote><div>The wretched creature began to whimper.</div><div>“I am sure, sir, it was only my practical joke.”</div></blockquote></div><div>And later, has he was being taken away by Inspector Lestrade: </div><div><blockquote><div>“It was a joke, my good sir, a practical joke, nothing more,” he whined incessantly. “I assure you, sir, that I simply concealed myself in order to see the effect of my disappearance, and I am sure that you would not be so unjust as to imagine that I would have allowed any harm to befall poor young Mr. McFarlane.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>In order to dismiss any fear her husband might have or keep him from harm, Elsie Cubitt claimed that the dancing men cipher was a joke: </div><blockquote><div>“She answered that it was some senseless practical joke, and that I should not take any notice of it.” </div></blockquote><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Jokes Eliminated as Motives</h3><div>There are also instances of jokes being eliminated as a motive in certain dire circumstances.</div><div><br /></div><div>When he awoke to find the house abandoned in "Wisteria Lodge," John Scott Eccles told Holmes:</div><div><blockquote><div>“I was furious. My first idea was that I had been the victim of some absurd practical joke.” </div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes and Lestrade, discussing the motive of the severed ears arriving in "The Cardboard Box": </div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>“You have observed, of course,” said he at last, “that the ears are not a pair.”</div><div>“Yes, I have noticed that. But if this were the practical joke of some students from the dissecting-rooms, it would be as easy for them to send two odd ears as a pair.”</div><div>“Precisely. But this is not a practical joke.”</div></blockquote><div></div></div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes played things up for Culverton Smith in "The Dying Detective," getting the criminal to admit that he sent Holmes a poisoned booby-trap:</div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>“Yes, yes, I opened it. There was a sharp spring inside it. Some joke—”</div><div>“It was no joke, as you will find to your cost.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Mistaken for a Joke</h3><div>And there are cases where something considered a joke when Sherlock Holmes knew something much more serious was at stake:</div><div><br /></div><div><div>After Jabez Wilson discovered he had been duped to be away from his shop, he viewed it as an inconvenience and a monetary loss:</div><div></div><blockquote><div>“But I want to find out about them, and who they are, and what their object was in playing</div><div><div>this prank—if it was a prank—upon me. It was a pretty expensive joke for them, for it cost them two and thirty pounds.”</div></div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>In "The Five Orange Pips," John Openshaw's father was left with the effects of his own brother, Colonel Openshaw. When an envelope arrived and told him to "put the papers on the sundial," the elder Openshaw dismissed the threat and remarked:</div><div><blockquote><div>“ ‘Some preposterous practical joke,’ said he. ‘What have I to do with sundials and papers? I shall take no notice of such nonsense.’</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>When the race was over and Colonel Ross wondered where the murderer of John Straker was, Sherlock Holmes claimed that he was "In my company at this moment." It is, of course, how all great things are accomplished: through collaboration, pooling of resources, and scale.</div><div></div><div><br /></div><div>Not everyone is able to get along, though. When ancient man turned to an agricultural society rather than a hunt-and-gather society, it required working with others. This not only led to conflicts with other growing societies, but to squabbles from within.</div><div><br /></div><div>Rebellion typically arises when one group feels oppressed under a harsh leadership, with certain rights having been stripped from them. They organize, rise up, and see the results of their work (either negative or positive).</div><div><br /></div><div>A couple of rebellions in the Sherlock Holmes stories come to mind:</div><div><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>"The<i> Gloria Scott</i>": a mutiny aboard a ship of prisoners that led to the ship's demise and the delivery of incognito survivors to their destination.</li><li><i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>: Sir Hugo held the Baskerville seat during "the Great Rebellion," meaning the English Civil War (1642 –1651)</li><li><i>A Study in Scarlet</i>: John Ferrier and Jefferson Hope were considered rebels against the church's authority</li><li><i>The Sign of Four</i>: Jonathan Small tells of the 3d Bengal Fusiliers at the Fort of Agra and how, when the Great Mutiny broke out, he joined them "to meet the rebels at Shahgunge," and upon returning to the fort, the Four used the existence of rebels to mask their heist.</li><li>"The Crooked Man": Corporal Henry Wood was sent into battle amid "ten thousand rebels round us, and they were as keen as a set of terriers round a rat-cage," before being captured by a group of them.</li></ol></div><div><div>But perhaps it is the would-be mutineer John H. Watson we should have kept our eyes on the whole time — an Army man with experience in India and Afghanistan. He told us early on that he was considering rising up against Sherlock Holmes:</div><blockquote><div>"I might have rebelled against these exasperating solos..."
