Found pinned to his wall by a harpoon through his chest, he was finished off by... well, we'll avoid spoilers here. </div><div><br /></div><div>But there's an interesting bit of autobiographical information that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle gives away in his description of Carey:</div><div><blockquote><div>He was a most daring and successful seal and whale fisher. In 1883 he commanded the steam sealer <i>Sea Unicorn</i>, of Dundee. He had then had several successful voyages in succession, and in the following year, 1884, he retired.</div></blockquote><div><i>Sea Unicorn</i> is a unique and memorable name for a ship. Do you know what creature is called a "sea unicorn"? If you guessed the narwhal, you're right. The narwhal (<i>Monodon monoceros</i>) is a type of toothed whale that is native to the Arctic.</div><div><br /></div><div>In 1880, Conan Doyle took a voyage on the <i>Hope</i>, an arctic whaler, and kept a diary of his experiences on board. His diary was reproduced in the marvelous book <b><i><a href="https://amzn.to/49kMtgE" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Dangerous Work</a></i></b>, edited by Jon Lellenberg and Dan Stashower. Is it possible that Conan Doyle came across a sea unicorn in his arctic whaling adventures?</div><div><br /></div><div>As we see from the entry on Sunday, June 6th, Conan Doyle provided two illustrations: "Towing home the Narwhal" and "The Narwhal itself."</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Which is perhaps an homage to the very family of animal that laid him up at university and changed the course of his life's work.</div><div><br /></div><div>He knew that dogs are shrewd creatures, and their natural abilities afforded him additional insight and information than he might otherwise gain. Consider the various uses of dogs in the Canon:</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Tracking tools</b>: <br /><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Toby (SIGN) helped track the creosote footmarks of Jonathan Small and Tonga; </li><li>Pompey (MISS), given the scent of aniseed, helped retrace the path of Dr. Leslie Armstrong</li></ul><b>Clue-givers</b>: </div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>The dog that "did nothing in the night-time" (SILV) is probably the most famous dog in the Canon, aside from the Hound. Most of the Canonical Sherlock Holmes stories begin with the title "The Adventure of..."</div><div><br /></div><div>But to those who have been around a while, they notice the titles that did nothing in the night-time.</div><div><br /></div><div>The first six short stories ("A Scandal in Bohemia," "The Red-Headed League," "A Case of Identity," "The Boscombe Valley Mystery," "The Five Orange Pips," and "The Man with the Twisted Lip") do not contain "The Adventure of" in their titles. Watson, M.D., he's wallowing in his situation at the Criterion. After running into his old dresser, Stamford, the latter tells Watson of a peculiar student in the chemical laboratory. Watson naturally assumes, <b><i>“A medical student, I suppose?”</i></b></div><div><br /></div><div>It's a natural question from a medical man. Stamford indicates that Holmes's bedside manner may have been less than ideal for such a profession:</div><div><br /></div><div><blockquote><div>“Holmes is a little too scientific for my tastes—it approaches to cold-bloodedness.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>Yet in denying knowledge of Holmes's intended area of study, Stamford completely missed an opportunity as he expressed horror at Holmes's practices:</div><div><br /></div><div><blockquote><div>“When it comes to beating the subjects in the dissecting-rooms with a stick, it is certainly taking rather a bizarre shape.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>Might this not be the makings of a future coroner? After all, when he came across dead bodies in various stories in the Canon, Holmes took great care to examine the corpses. We're told that he examined Drebber's body carefully, even sniffing the dead man's lips (STUD).</div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes was able to tell that William Kirwan was shot at a distance of more than four yards, as he examined the wound on the body and noted an absence of powder-blackening on the clothes (REIG).</div><div><br /></div><div>Indeed, Holmes made a careful study of many dead bodies over the course of his documented career: </div><div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b><i>The Sign of the Four</i></b> — He examines Bartholomew Sholto’s rigid body at Pondicherry Lodge.</li><li><b>"The Boscombe Valley Mystery" </b>— He studies Charles McCarthy’s body at the crime scene.</li><li><b>"Silver Blaze"</b> — He looks at the body of John Straker, the murdered trainer.</li><li><b>"The Cardboard Box"</b> — He examines the severed human ears sent in a package.</li><li>"<b>The Resident Patient"</b> — He investigates the dead body of Blessington.</li><li><b>"The Norwood Builder"</b> — He inspects Jonas Oldacre’s supposed remains (which turned out to be those of a couple of rabbits)</li><li><b>"Black Peter"</b>— He examines Peter Carey’s corpse pinned to the wall.</li><li><b>"The Abbey Grange"</b> — He views Sir Eustace Brackenstall’s murdered body.</li><li><i><b>The Valley of Fear </b></i>— He examines the body of John Douglas in Birlstone Manor.</li><li><b>"The Bruce-Partington Plans"</b> — He inspects the corpse of Cadogan West, found on the tracks of the Underground.</li></ul></div></div><div>Sherlock Holmes would have made an excellent pathologist. Spanning from <i>Tom Sawyer</i> to <i>The Complete Sherlock Holmes</i> to <i>The Essays of Francis Bacon </i>and <i>Kidnapped</i>, the book is constructed in such a way that it doesn’t require a full commitment; you can read as many or as few essays as you like at a time, and you'll still walk away satisfied.<br /><br />It’s an entire book that has no beginning, middle, or end, and is simply chapter after chapter of reveries and personal anecdotes, wrapped in the dust jacket of literature.<div><br />In his preface to Walt Whitman’s <i>Leaves of Grass</i> we find a validation of People Like Us ― people enamored with books; people who can find meaning in pages that haven't been opened for decades (or longer); people who find inspiration in nearly everything they read.  In this preface wrote of one of his own favorite tributes to <i>Leaves of Grass</i>, penned by another author:<br /><blockquote>“The passage I mean was written in 1887 by Robert Louis Stevenson. His preface “<b>In Memoriam Sherlock Holmes</b>” was more than an essay summing up the 60 stories; it was an introduction to the world of Sherlock Holmes devotees:</p><blockquote>“One of the blissful ways of passing an evening, when you encounter another dyed-in-the-blood addict, is to embark upon the happy discussion of minor details of Holmesiana. ‘Whose gold watch was it that had been so mishandled?’ one may ask; and the other counters with ‘What was the book that Joseph Stangerson carried in his pocket?’ Endless delicious minutiae to consider!”<div></div></blockquote><p><br /></p><p>Minutiae indeed. He was quivering with silent laughter.”</div></blockquote><div>Sherlock Holmes responded seemingly enigmatically:</div><div><blockquote>“I trust that age doth not wither nor custom stale my infinite variety.”</blockquote></div><div>What is the significance of this quote and what did Holmes mean?</div><div><br /></div><div>This was a paraphrase of a line from William Shakespeare's <i>Antony and Cleopatra</i>, when Enobarbus described the allure of the Queen of the Nile to the Roman leader:</div><div><blockquote>“Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale <br />Her infinite variety”</blockquote></div><div>In the play, it meant that Cleopatra's charms were so endlessly varied that Antony could never tire of her.</div><div><br /></div><div>In our case, Holmes meant that even after a three-year hiatus, he still retained the power to surprise Watson. It is a pattern that repeated many times throughout their association in the Canon. When Sir Hugo Baskerville, "a most wild, profane, and godless man" finds that the girl he kidnapped has made her escape, we get a sense as to his temper tantrum:</div><div><blockquote><div>"Then, as it would seem, he became as one that hath a devil, for, rushing down the stairs into the dining-hall, he sprang upon the great table, flagons and trenchers flying before him, and he cried aloud before all the company that he would that very night render his body and soul to the Powers of Evil if he might but overtake the wench. And while the revellers stood aghast at the fury of the man, one more wicked or, it may be, more drunken than the rest, cried out that they should put the hounds upon her."</div></blockquote></div><div>One has to imagine such a fellow as employing a few choice invectives.</div><div><br /></div><div>And although there are no profanities—even the use of "bloody" is reserved for actual sanguinary events—there are a number of insults that are peddled. </div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes himself is the subject of many of these, usually uttered by frustrated antagonists.
