While the most famous pieces of Sherlock Holmes's wardrobe may typically be his deerstalker cap and Inverness cape — ironically two items never mentioned in the Canon — he's still recognized (although less well known) in his dressing gown. William Gillette (above) famously played Sherlock Holmes on stage some 1,300 times from 1899 to 1930 in a heavy quilted and silken number.<br />

But what do we know about the dressing gowns mentioned in conjunction with Holmes in the original stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? And how can you dress just as nattily as Holmes in the comfort of your own abode?<br />

<h3>
The Original Stories</h3>
The first time (in the order the stories were published) we glimpse Sherlock Holmes in a dressing gown is in "The Man With the Twisted Lip," in which Watson describes the scene at the St. Clairs' home:<br />

"He took off his coat and waistcoat, put on a large blue dressing-gown, and then wandered about the room collecting pillows from his bed, and cushions from the sofa and armchairs. With these he constructed a sort of Eastern divan, upon which he perched himself cross-legged, with an ounce of shag tobacco and a box of matches laid out in front of him."</blockquote>

We next read of Watson discovering Holmes "lounging upon the sofa in a purple dressing-gown" in "The Blue Carbuncle," as Holmes examined Henry Baker's discarded hat. The pair were later interrupted by Peterson the commissionaire, with his amazing discovery of the precious gem in the crop of the goose he brought home to his wife.<br />

Other times when Holmes appeared in his dressing gown were days when he was sitting idly at Baker Street, such as in "The Engineer's Thumb" ("lounging about his sitting-room in his dressing-gown, reading the agony column of <i>The Times</i>"), "The Beryl Coronet" ("My friend rose lazily from his armchair, and stood with his hands in the pockets of his dressing-gown, looking over my shoulder."), and "The Bruce-Partington Plans" ("He was a different man to the limp and lounging figure in the mouse-coloured dressing-gown who had prowled so restlessly only a few hours before round the fog-girt room.").<br />

There are instances when Holmes is roused to action and, still clad in his dressing gown, wakes Watson. In "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax," "he rushed into my room. He was in his dressing-gown, but his pale, hollow-eyed face told me that his night had been a sleepless one." And in "The Resident Patient," Holmes has done everything but change into his coat: "At half-past seven next morning, in the first dim glimmer of daylight, I found him standing by my bedside in his dressing-gown." We see Holmes the quick-change artist in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>: "'Your hat and boots, Watson, quick! Not a moment to lose!' He rushed into his room in his dressing-gown, and was back again in a few seconds in a frock-coat."<br />

Let's not forget the dressing gown as disguise for Holmes's mannequin in the window in two stories. First, Holmes's return in "The Empty House" led Col. Sebastian Moran to mistake the bust for his real target as "It stood on a small pedestal table with an old dressing-gown of Holmes's so draped round it that the illusion from the street was absolutely perfect." Later in the story, Holmes wore it himself: "He had thrown off the seedy frock-coat, and now he was the Holmes of old in the mouse-coloured dressing-gown which he took from his effigy."<br />

And later in "The Mazarin Stone," in an effort to fool Count Negretto Sylvius (and evidently Dr. Watson as well),<br />

"There was a facsimile of his old friend, dressing-gown and all, the face turned three-quarters towards the window and downwards, as though reading an invisible book, while the body was sunk deep in an armchair."</blockquote>
<br />
Yes, the dressing gown was almost akin the effect of a superhero changing from street clothes to appointed costume as our hero readied himself for any occasion.<br />

<h3>
The Color Theory</h3>
If you read the excerpts above, you'll note that there are three colors mentioned (and in most cases no color noted whatsoever). What are we to make of this? Some Sherlockians have assumed that Holmes owned more than one dressing gown (see "Sherlock Holmes's Dressing Gown(s)," S.F. Blake, <i>The Baker Street Journal</i>, Vol. 10, No. 2, April 1960, pp. 86-89 - <a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/ebooks/ebsj.html" target="_blank">available via the eBSJ</a>).<br />
<br />
But we prefer the ingenious and tidy solution developed by Christopher Morley, the founder of the Baker Street Irregulars. In his essay "Was Sherlock Holmes an American?" which first appeared in 1936, he mentioned the controversy<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"such as, was Holmes's dressing gown blue, purple or mouse colored?" [Fn. "Elementary. This particular gown was blue when new. (<i>The Twisted Lip</i>) It had gone purple by the time of the <i>Blue Carbuncle</i>. During the long absence 1891-94, when Mrs. Hudson faithfully aired and sunned it in the backyard, it faded to mouse (<i>The Empty House</i>).</blockquote>
It was this deduction that led Morley to plan for the official colors of the Baker Street Irregulars. "I want to sell the BSI boys the idea of adopting <i>colors</i> for the club: to be shewn in either a rosette for the lapel, or even in a necktie. The colors, of course, to be<br />

these being the three shades through which Sherlock's dressing gown passed in its fadings. A fine rich purple; a pleasing "electric blue" (like the dress Violet Hunter had to wear in Copper Beeches!); and then a furry, soft, comfortable mouselike gray. . . . "</blockquote>
Then came the official <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/03/the-1950-bsi-dinner.html" target="_blank">announcement at the 1950 BSI Dinner</a>. And the ties (and rosettes!) are still in use today, available to investitured Baker Street Irregulars.<br />

Today is January 6th — and that marks the date on which we traditionally celebrate Sherlock Holmes's birthday.<br />
<br />
We say "traditionally," because there is no definitive statement of his actual date of birth in the Canon, but beginning with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Morley">Christopher Morley</a>, the date of January 6th has become the de facto accepted date for Holmes' birthday. Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons.<br />
<br />
Of all of the quotes in the Canon, William Shakespeare was the most oft-quoted author. There is but one Shakespearean play that Holmes quotes twice: <i><a href="https://amzn.to/37GCVtA">Twelfth Night</a><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEjsc-CslxTjCdXUIIrP1JjtSbrOuVqbQY4wmPXHv0-mQ3lat6DMqDTNXzZPdvzHRXj-xozSLxUPcn8JI0-LUvaXIZGji9159DhTm6UHyjT4VCjdNIMgx7hzEWiMc_OPMDRgSPlp2TFuq5EU6lVl_Fc1lVuulrAZ1GMRBeizQJqv4VV5P60gdS7kIz4=" /></i>. In <i>The Sign of the Four</i>, Holmes concludes, "All is well that ends well." This is from from Act IV, Scene 4. And in "The Empty House," Holmes states "'Journeys end in lovers meetings,' as the old play says," from Act II, Scene 3.<br />

The reason the date was chosen is that in Christianity, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6">January 6th</a> is the Feast of the Epiphany, or officially the twelfth day of Christmas. I suppose if we were being truly technical about it, the twelfth night of Christmas would fall on January 5th...<br />
<br />
In addition, William S. Baring-Gould in his <a href="https://amzn.to/2QrZ4G3"><i>The Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i></a>, posited that because Holmes was a little cranky on the morning of January 7th - the date on which <i>The Valley of Fear</i> began - he had a hangover, induced by birthday celebrations the evening prior.<br />

And why 166? Scholars have fixed the year of Sherlock Holmes's birth to 1854 by virtue of a line in "His Last Bow" when he was described as "a tall gaunt man of sixty."<br />

The New Year not only brings us into the 'Twenties, but brings welcome news from the world of Sherlock Holmes as well.<br />
<br />
Three stories from <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Case-Book_of_Sherlock_Holmes#Contents">The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes</a></i> officially enter the public domain as of January 1, 2020: "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire," "The Adventure of the Three Garridebs," and "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client." Each was first published in 1924, and under the 95-year copyright term, the copyright expired at the end of 2019.<br />
<br />
That means there are just six stories left under copyright protection: "The Adventure of the Three Gables," "The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier," "The Adventure of the Lion's Mane," and "The Adventure of the Retired Colourman," which will enter the public domain in 2022; and "The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger" and "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place," which will enter the public domain in 2023.<br />
<br />
While the copyrights on the original stories is undisputed, longtime followers of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere may recall the highly pitched legal battle over copyright of the characters from 2013 and 2014.<br />
<br />
<h2>
<b>A Brief History of #FreeSherlock</b></h2>
It began in early 2013 when Leslie S. Klinger, BSI ("The Abbey Grange") s<a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/02/imagine-that-you-can-bully-me-chas_14.html#.Xg0SLEdKjb3">ued the Conan Doyle Estate Ltd. for use of characters</a> from the Sherlock Holmes canon. The CDE argued that the characters were not fully formed until all of the stories were completed.<br />
<br />
This bizarre legal theory would have created a special copyright term for characters, who could remain copyrighted long after the stories in which they appear enter the public domain, as long as their owners keep tweaking them in subsequent books. Not surprisingly, <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/12/plaintiff-victorious-in-free-sherlock.html#.Xg0Ij0dKjb2">the court rejected this argument</a>, finding that<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“It is a bedrock principle of copyright that once work enters the public domain it cannot be appropriated as private (intellectual) property, and even the most creative of legal theories cannot trump this tenet.”</blockquote>
In <a href="http://ihose.co/freesherlock">a special episode of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</a>, we talked with intellectual property law professor Betsy Rosenblatt, BSI ("Lucy Ferrier") and Les about the implications for literary and entertainment characters:<br />

Then in June 2014, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, with an opinion written by Judge Richard Posner, <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/07/the-us-supreme-court-denies-conan-doyle.html#.Xg0SdEdKjb0">rejected the appeal by the Conan Doyle Estate Ltd.</a>, rebuking it as a "quixotic" attempt to seek "perpetual, or nearly perpetual copyright protection" of the Sherlock Holmes character.<br />
<br />
The CDE filed an emergency stay with the Supreme Court of the United States in July and SCOTUS promptly denied it. Then in August, <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/08/7th-circuit-orders-conan-doyle-estate.html#.Xg0ar0dKjb1">the 7th Circuit ordered the Conan Doyle Estate to give up its "extortion"</a> and develop a new business model.<br />
<br />
The saga reached its conclusion in November 2014 when <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/11/supreme-court-wont-hear-freesherlock.html#.Xg0TPkdKjb1">SCOTUS officially rejected the dispute</a>.<br />
<br />
And here we are.<br />
<br />
The stories continue to roll into public domain, and the characters remain so.<br />

We've come across a few <a href="https://www.sherlockholmespodcast.com/2019/05/poisons.html">poisons in the Sherlock Holmes stories</a>. From South American alkaloids to prussic acid to charcoal and more, there have been a handful of poisons that have caused irreparable damage or death to the victims.<br />
<br />
But in most of these instances, there was one thing that we lacked: an antidote.<br />
<br />
Think about that for a moment: in each case where poison was concerned, there was no antidote for a lethal dose. The victims all expired.<br />
<br />
In the occasional instance of victims receiving a non-lethal dose, they either had the poison removed in some fashion (SUSS) or removed themselves from the environment before more damage could be done (DEVI).<br />
<br />
However, Watson's medical bag wasn't completely devoid of solving harrowing cases. He of course carried his universal specific everywhere. That's right; brandy.<br />

Today traditionally marks the date on which "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" took place. The seventh in the series of stories that make up <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>, "The Blue Carbucnle" is the sole Christmas story in the Sherlock Holmes canon.<br />
<br />
Watson sets the stage for us by opening the tale with this paragraph:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I had called upon my friend Sherlock Holmes upon the second morning after Christmas, with the intention of wishing him the compliments of the season. He was lounging upon the sofa in a purple dressing-gown, a pipe-rack within his reach upon the right, and a pile of crumpled morning papers, evidently newly studied, near at hand. Beside the couch was a wooden chair, and on the angle of the back hung a very seedy and disreputable hard felt hat, much the worse for wear, and cracked in several places. A lens and a forceps lying upon the seat of the chair suggested that the hat had been suspended in this manner for the purpose of examination."</blockquote>
It has become a tradition at I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere to acknowledge December 27th with a repeat feature. Just as the <i>Wall Street Journal</i> annually reproduces a 1949 editorial written by Vermont Royster called "<a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj-3My0j_zJAhUIPCYKHePhBrMQFgghMAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Farticles%2FSB10001424052970204464404577112431986005786&usg=AFQjCNFBOMTBdMiqlxf9tGYz0Jb-tieRKw&sig2=qjutMkGmsi34eHf1n39PhQ" target="_blank"><i>In Hoc Anno Domini</i></a>," we saw no reason to avoid replication here.<br />

To us, one of the most iconic fogs in Baker Street lore is the opening of "The Bruce-Partington Plans," in which Watson very clearly sets the scene:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"In the third week of November, in the year 1895, a dense yellow fog settled down upon London. From the Monday to the Thursday I doubt whether it was ever possible from our windows in Baker Street to see the loom of the opposite houses."</blockquote>
And to remind us that this was not just a weather phenomenon, but an industrial-influenced condition, he described "the greasy, heavy brown swirl still drifting past us and condensing in oily drops upon the window-panes."<br />

Perhaps you recall Watson mentioning in the midst of "The Bruce-Partington Plans" that Sherlock Holmes took his mind off of things while waiting for crucial information by losing himself "in a monograph which he had undertaken upon the Polyphonic Motets of Lassus."<br />

Perhaps you've wondered who Lassus was. That would be Orlande de Lassus (or Orlando di Lasso), a Renaissance composer, who along with Palestrina, was one of the most influential musicians of the late 16th century.<br />

But what did a "polyphonic motet" sound like? And what were these motets composed for? And why should Sherlock Holmes have an interest in them?<br />

Whether you're making the trip for the first or twenty-first time, you know that the Weekend provides the same level of excitement, anticipation and giddiness as Christmas morning does to a child.<br />

It's usually during those anxious moments that our brain-attic tends to forget some of the essentials that help make a great trip perfect. And for the uninitiated, it's just a matter of not knowing what you need to survive the BSI Weekend.<br />
<br />
This is the <b>eighth </b>annual installment of this post — the first of which was inspired by interviewing several members of the Baker Street Irregulars — including some newer members who might have a less distant memory of their first Weekend, and some who have been at it literally for decades. Information has been updated to reflect changes in the city as well as in technology.<br />

Bags 🧳</h3>

<li>Make sure that you have plenty of room to bring home books that you bought. If you have to bring an extra bag that you can fold up and put in your suitcase, do so. </li>
<li>Some suggest bringing a plastic shopping bag to the BSI dinner, as it makes carrying the dinner packet around a little easier, especially if you plan to go to another venue afterward. </li>
<li>You might also consider <b>bringing a shopping bag to the Merchants Room</b> on Saturday to carry your various purchases. Not all merchants provide bags; carting away your haul is <i>your</i> responsibility.</li>
</ul>

<h3>
Meeting Others 📇</h3>
<ul>
<li>Bring business cards. You will be meeting a lot of new people, and you will be sharing contact information. Put as many as you think that you will need in your pack, and then double it. And be sure to include all modes of contacting you, including website, Twitter handle, etc. </li>
<li>If you're in need of a good card, the <a href="http://moo.com/">Moo</a> does a splendid job and <a href="http://vistaprint.com/">VistaPrint</a> has a fast turnaround time. </li>
<li>If you want to make sure you get your table mates to sign your menu, bring a pen to the dinner. </li>
<li>Allow yourself time to schmooze with other Sherlockians. This is the fastest way to make new friends, who will quickly become old friends. </li>
</ul>

Comportment / Etiquette 🤝</h3>
<ul>
<li><b>Do</b> tell people how good it is to see them again — or to meet them for the first time after having known them only online. <b>Do</b> tell them that you miss them in the intervening months between BSI weekends. <b>Do</b> tell them how invaluable they are to you as a Sherlockian comrade-in-arms and friend and how much you value their friendship. </li>
<li>If you're scheduled to speak at an event, be mindful not to overdo the alcohol beforehand. Dutch courage is usually inappropriate in such circumstances. </li>
<li>In this hyper-connected world, it's easy to forget that there are those attending the weekend for whom "it is always 1895" — or nearly so. When you're taking photographs, please be mindful of those who are firmly rooted in the 20th century and who might not want to appear on your  timeline by <u>asking their permission</u> to share your photos of them online.</li>
</ul>

<h3>
Attire 🥿 🧥</h3>
<ul>
<li>Bring comfortable shoes. The weekend inevitably includes a lot of walking. </li>
<li>This one is especially for the ladies: it's useful to have a change of shoes in your handbag so the stilettos don't murder you by the end of the evening (or vice versa). </li>
<li>Bring warm clothes. It is winter in New York, and non-Sherlockian New York friends say they know when we are in town because we bring really bad weather. </li>
<li>Dress in layers. Many times the weather can be cold, but there have been instances in New York in January when we could – and did – comfortably walk about the streets without even a jacket on. </li>
</ul>

<h3>
Money 💰</h3>
<ul>
<li>Bring small bills. They will come in handy as you share taxis going from place to place, and you’ll find them handy when tipping helpful service employees. We prefer withdrawing $2 bills from the bank and bringing them with us to make things extra efficient.</li>
<li>Bring a checkbook to the Merchants Room as not everyone takes credit cards and you may find an item you must have. </li>
<li>If you see something you're interested in at the Merchants Room and you can afford it, don't wait until your second sweep of the room – it will probably be gone by then.</li>
<li>Most of the vendors in the Merchants Room are very kind and understanding people, and many are also collectors or Sherlockians themselves. If you would care to haggle with them, they're likely open to it. It can't hurt to ask.</li>
<li>The BSI and Wessex Press tables will accept <b>credit cards, PayPal and Apple Pay</b>.</li>
<li>Estimate, on the top side, what you expect to spend – and then double it. That might get you through. 💸</li>
</ul>

Time 🕰️</h3>
<ul>
<li>If you have any health conditions, allow yourself time to go back to your hotel room for periodic rests. Many find these rests invaluable, enabling them to enjoy the weekend despite their condition. Schedule your time. </li>
<li>Know when you need to be places (including when you need to catch the train/plane back home). </li>
<li>Count on it taking some time to get a cab amongst the other Sherlockians who may be headed to events on the other side of 5th Avenue.</li>
<li>Alternatively, download a ride-hailing app (such as Uber, Lyft or Via) to help you avoid these waits. <b>See below for more details and a way to save money on rides</b>.</li>

Getting Around 🚕 🚇 🚶</h3>

<li>Print out a street map of the city with the places you need to be circled or otherwise identified. Many things are within walking distance, but it is good to know you are starting out in the right direction (or know when to turn). </li>
<li>If you're smartphone-enabled, there are plenty of map apps to choose from. Aside from the standard Google Maps, there's <a href="http://citymapper.com/" target="_blank">Citymapper</a>, <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gogobot.gogodroid.cityguide.newyorkcity" target="_blank">Gogobot's York City Guide for Android</a> and iOS has the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/new-york-travel-guide-offline/id319296365?mt=8">New York Travel Guide and Offline Map</a> by Ulmon.</li>
<li>Download and print the <a href="http://www.bsiweekend.com/2019/12/summary-of-events.html" target="_blank">Summary of Weekend Events</a> from <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/">bsiweekend.com</a> (and seen below), or bookmark it on your smartphone. </li>
<li>If you want to go to Otto Penzler's <a href="http://mysteriousbookshop.com/" target="_blank">Mysterious Bookshop</a> and are staying at The Roosevelt Hotel, the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to go is by subway. From Grand Central take a <b>4</b> or <b>5</b> express train <b>two</b> stops to <b>Brooklyn Bridge Station</b>; it is a very short walk over to Otto's. Don't take a local (which makes 10 stops). The express is about five minutes. </li>

What? You’re not getting enough food between events? Thankfully there are gaps that allow a Sherlockian to venture places on his or her own. And of course, there are plenty of restaurants in and near Grand Central Station, which is in great proximity to the Yale Club and the Roosevelt Hotel.<br />

<li>Several Sherlockians like to go to the <b><a href="http://www.oysterbarny.com/">Oyster Bar</a></b> for dinner after the Thursday night lecture. </li>

Most of us are familiar with Edgar W. Smith. He served as the second head of the Baker Street Irregulars, acting as an able administrator from 1940-1960, after he convinced Christopher Morley to take the organization out of its three-year hibernation (<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/03/the-1936-bsi-dinner.html" target="_blank">1936</a> was the last dinner before the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/03/the-1940-bsi-dinner.html" target="_blank">1940 dinner</a>).<br />
<br />
Smith was also the first editor of <i><a href="http://ihose.co/BSJ" target="_blank">The Baker Street Journal</a></i>, the quarterly publication of Sherlockian work that he and Ben Abramson birthed in 1946. In the Old Series (the 13 issues that ran from 1946-1948), Smith created the tradition of "The Editor's Gas-Lamp," which continues to this day.<br />
<br />
His writing belied a master wordsmith, just as he applied his administrative acumen from the industrial world to the BSI. His language was very nearly like poetry, but without being flowery. Smith's writing conjured powerful images while not seeming as if it was trying too hard. In short, each of his essays were masterpieces.<br />
<br />
What could be called Smith's cornerstone essay was his Gas-Lamp titled "<b><a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/203991035/The-Implicit-Holmes?ad_group=xxc1xx&campaign=VigLink&medium=affiliate&source=hp_affiliate" target="_blank">The Implicit Holmes</a></b>" (BSJ OS Vol. 1, No. 2, April 1946). In it, he asked  “What is it that we love in Sherlock Holmes? And then he went on to artfully describe the surroundings in which Holmes found himself:<br />

<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>"We love the times in which he lived, of course: the half-remembered, half-forgotten times of snug Victorian illusion, of gaslit comfort and contentment, of perfect dignity and grace. The world was poised precariously in balance, and rude disturbances were coming with the years; but those who moved upon the scene were very sure that all was well: that nothing ever would be any worse nor ever could be any better. There was no threat to righteousness and justice and the cause of peace on earth except from such as Moriarty and the lesser villains in his train. The cycle of events had come full turn, and the times were ripe for living – and for being lost. It is because their loss was suffered before they had been fully lived that they are times to which our hearts and longings belong. </blockquote>

In <a href="https://amzn.to/2PpcwJa" style="font-style: italic;" target="_blank">Irregular Records of the Early Forties</a> by Jon Lellenberg (published in 1991 for the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/history/" target="_blank">BSI Press History</a> series), Peter B. Spivak wrote a chapter titled "Baker Street Industrialist," which was a deeper look at Smith's career at General Motors. It seems that his facility with the language was evident there as well, as he was said to be </div>

"unrivalled in his ability to make what was technical seem sensible and interesting to those who read it. He wrote in a style which made it easier for GM's large and growing staff to understand and follow the policies and future plans of General Motors. The company's archives describe him as 'a great speechwriter.' In a company which has a tradition of excellent speechwriters, Smith's style stands out, and is remembered even though he has been away from the company for well over thirty years."</blockquote>

<b>"we saw a sudden light" [SPEC]</b></h3>
We've owned a few copies of the Heritage Press edition of the Sherlock Holmes stories for a while. This is the three-volume set that comes in black slipcases, with a raised cameo of Frederic Dorr Steele's profile of Sherlock Holmes on the cover. It was the definitive text, corrected and edited by Edgar Smith, and released between 1950 and 1952.<br />
<br />
It's one of those volumes of the Canon that we had to have, but didn't pay much attention to the text of it because...well, these are the same 60 stories we have in the Doubleday, Annotated, Oxford, John Murray and other editions that we own.<br />
<br />
Recently, we were able to add the Easton Press updated vesion to that set (printed in 1981). The covers are black with three gilt icons on the covers and spine: one volume has a magnifying glass, another a deerstalker, and the third a pipe. Clearly, adding this to our library was for the visual appeal.<br />

Despite that singular appeal, we opened up the first volume and spent some time with the introduction by Vincent Starrett (reprinted from the Heritage Press edition). It's such a pleasure to lose oneself in the joy and wonder of those early Sherlockian giants!<br />
<br />
The Starrett essay had a ring of familiarity to it, though. Pulling another book from our collection, we realized it almost instantly: it was an excerpt and agglomeration of material from <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2E2mTNA" target="_blank">The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</a></i>, published in 1933. (For an in-depth look at <i>The Private Life</i>, please see <a href="http://www.vincentstarrett.com/blog/2018/8/12/y9vshkn40quitqti37j7hj11ikaykh" target="_blank">Ray Betzner's 17-part series</a> on VincentStarrett.com.)<br />
<br />
One paragraph stood out to us from the introduction, appearing as the final paragraph of <i>The Private Life</i> from the chapter titled "No. 221B Baker Street." See if it has a familiar ring to it:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"And who is Sherlock Holmes? The spirit in a town and of a time. He is the fog in that crying old street, Baker Street; the glow of sea coal in the grates, where the English servant bring in to you tea and muffins, and snug napkins of odorous toast. He is...the mystery of the house opposite; of the grubby little shop around the corner you noticed and wondered about; of the old, old lady, half perceived in her shining brougham, who passes through empty Eaton Square every Wednesday afternoon. Sherlock is he who answers when you ask the air, Who lives there, I wonder! What is the story behind that drawn blind in London?...From him you may expect something much too subtle to be advertised. Cabs slurring through the mud, sounds and sights and presences of the old nineties in Baker Street — that time and that place which above all thought itself final, and that nothing different was ever going to happen again."</blockquote>

Starrett credits this quote to <b>William Bolitho</b>: <i>The Last Bow</i>.<br />
<br />
To us, phrases like "snug napkins," "half perceived," and "cabs slurring through the mud" are eerily similar to "snug Victorian illusion," "half-remembered, half-forgot," and "cabs rolled up before a certain door." While they aren't exactly the same, there's enough there that made Bolitho's paragraph jump out to us as a possible influence on Smith's "The Implicit Holmes."<br />
<br />
Who was Bolitho and how likely would it have been that he entered into the mind of Edgar Smith before Smith penned his essay?<br />
<br />

<b>"South African securities" [SOLI]</b></h3>
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Bolitho_Ryall" target="_blank">William Bolitho Ryall</a> was a South African journalist who wrote under the name William Bolitho. He was among one of 16 soldiers who were buried alive in a mine explosion in Somme in 1916, of which he was the sole survivor.<br />
<br />
Following the war, he became the Paris correspondent for the <i>Manchester Guardian</i>, and eventually came to New York in 1928. He had a column in the <i>New York World</i> three times a week. His book <i>Twelve Against the Gods</i> was an instant bestseller in 1929, when Ryall was also involved in overseeing a London production of his play <i>Overture</i>.<br />
<br />
With a vested interest in the theater, it's no surprise then that William Bolitho would have been well aware of <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2018/04/remembering-william-gillette.html" target="_blank">William Gillette</a>, the foremost portrayer of Sherlock Holmes at the time.<br />
<br />
In fact, in the bibliography of <i>The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</i>, we find this citation for Bolitho's quote:<br />

Edgar Smith, that Baker Street Industrialist, whose career in communications at General Motors placed him in New York at <a href="https://www.skyscrapercenter.com/building/1775-broadway/19634" target="_blank">1775 Broadway</a>, most certainly would have been a reader of the <i>New York World</i>. And Edgar Smith, founding editor of the <i>Baker Street Journal</i> and <i>Profile by Gaslight</i>, second leader of the Baker Street Irregulars, and publisher of the Pamphlet House, would have undoubtedly followed the final appearances of William Gillette on stage.<br />
<br />
Could these two separate near-certainties have intersected? Could Smith have read Bolitho's piece and subconsciously used similar words and structure?<br />
<br />
It's just as likely that Smith read the excerpt in Starrett's <i>Private Life</i>, as Smith and Starrett were regular correspondents in the 1930s and 1940s. In fact, it was Starrett who suggested that Smith get involved with the Baker Street Irregulars. To say that Smith held Starrett in high regard is an understatement. Hey, when someone dedicates the poem "221B" to you, what more is there to say?<br />
<br />
As early as his high school years, his lifelong friend noted that Smith "<a href="https://www.bsiarchivalhistory.org/BSI_Archival_History/EWS_pt._1.html" target="_blank">had developed a retentive memory</a>."<br />

We love the idea of keeping the memory of Sherlock Holmes alive every day. Our <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose181" target="_blank">most recent interview</a> was with Levi Stahl and Stacey Shintani, editors of <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2sp90Xh" target="_blank">The Daily Sherlock Holmes</a></i>, which takes the idea to the extreme.<br />

<i><a href="http://strandmag.com/" target="_blank">The Strand Magazine</a></i> has another approach — one they've been taking for a number of years now: the <b>Sherlock Holmes Calendar</b>.<br />

The <a href="https://strandmag.com/product/sherlock-holmes-calendar-2020/" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Calendar 2020</a> goes beyond traditional Sherlock Holmes calendars we've seen previously, that have all Paget or Steele illustrations, or all purely dedicated to Basil Rathbone films or to the Granada series with Jeremy Brett.<br />
<br />
The Strand notes that the Sherlock Holmes Calendar is consistently their bestselling item, largely due to never using the same illustrations from year to year.<br />
<br />
This year, they have a treat in store for fans of the art of Sidney Paget, famous for first bringing Holmes to life for the original <i>Strand Magazine</i>. By the kind permission of several collectors, they have included the original paintings that Paget supplied to the Strand — in full color.<br />

In addition to the Pagets, there is art by Jeffrey McKeever including his painting “Sherlock Holmes on the Prowl for Gift” and three other paintings that were commissioned by the Strand featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Also included are paintings by our friend Australian illustrator Phil Cornell who created a tribute to "The Dancing Men," and “Sherlock on Trains.”<br />

Invitations to the <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars Weekend</a> in New York have been sent, and the public website was just updated.<br />
<br />
Whenever folks get their invitations, there's usually a sense of surprise, relief and even trepidation. Yes, trepidation. For some people, attending the Weekend is a difficult and onerous task.<br />
<br />
Some simply don't like to be around crowds, or perhaps detest the (often) harsh weather of New York in January. Others boycott for personal reasons. But there are some who simply can't afford the price of the accumulated events and the travel required to get there.<br />
<br />

<b>The John H. Watson Fund</b></h2>
In the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s under Tom Stix, Jr.'s ("The Norwood Builder") term as Wiggins of <a href="http://bakerstreetirregulars.com/" target="_blank">the Baker Street Irregulars</a>, Tom created the <b>Dr. John H. Watson Fund</b>, a financial assistance package for the BSI Weekend, and credited it as his most proud achievement of leading the BSI.<br />

It is a wonderful resource that enables more people to enjoy one of the most important aspects of our hobby: spending time in the company of like-minded people. And while there are plenty of opportunities around the world to do this on a local level, the BSI Weekend happens just once a year and celebrates a long-standing tradition (85 years!) that was started by Christopher Morley.</div>

Each year, the Fund is self-liquidating, meaning that assistance is granted to whatever extent is possible to the supplicants, and that generous Sherlockians are responsible for replenishing it every year. Traditionally this was done through simple check-writing, but then the BSI Cocktail Reception added <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/bsi-weekend/" target="_blank">an auction and drawing</a>, which also raise money for the Fund. Raffle tickets are sold throughout the weekend for some choice items and Peter Blau, BSI ("Black Peter") holds forth as an auctioneer nonpareil.<br />
