It is exciting to report that while the <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1229605719/the-mx-book-of-new-sherlock-holmes-stories-part-iv">Kickstarter</a> campaign for the fourth volume of the <i>MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories</i> assembled by <a href="http://mxpublishing.com/">MX Publishing</a> is fully funded, and the book will officially be released on May, 22nd 2016 — not coincidentally, the 157th birthday of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.<br />

We thought it would be a great idea to give some of the participating authors a chance to reflect on their involvement. As we did for the first three volumes (see <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/08/authors-reflect-on-part-1-of-worlds.html#.VzIF4fkrLb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Part 1</a>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/08/authors-reflect-on-part-2-of-worlds.html#.VzIF5fkrLb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Part 2</a> and <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/08/authors-reflect-on-part-3-of-worlds.html#.VzIGBvkrLb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Part 3</a> here), I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere will publish the answers of two questions that we asked each author:<br />

My poem is an expression of interest, curiosity, and credit due Mrs. Hudson, the landlady and guardian of 221B Baker Street. Her presence is noted throughout the Canon, yet her purpose is never exaggerated nor promoted. I am new to reading/studying the Canon, but a woman who is mentioned briefly but repetitively, adds depth and significance to her mention. The value of refuge, tolerance, and service, to men (characters) such as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson cannot be overstated.<br />

I wanted to contribute to the anthology because my beginning, my enthusiasm, and my following, hopefully encourages others to embrace the tales of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.<br />

As a teacher, I have always wondered what Holmes would be like as a student in my classroom. This story gave me the opportunity to explore that idea, plus I thought it would be appropriate to include the tale in an anthology which will support the Stepping Stones school at Undershaw.<br />

As before, I wanted to support Undershaw and help keep Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legacy alive for many generations to come.<br />

Sherlock Holmes once authored a monograph which analyzed 160 separate ciphers, and yet in all of canon, he only used codes or ciphers five times: "The <i>Gloria Scott</i>"; <i>The Valley of Fear</i>; "The Adventure of the Dancing Men"; "The Musgrave Ritual"; and "The Adventure of the Red Circle". I have a fondness for puzzle mysteries and secret messages; what would be more appropriate than having Holmes demonstrate his prowess by cracking a double-substitution cipher before our very eyes? The Wheatstone-Playfair cipher was invented in 1854, but came into prominence during the Second Boer War and World War I. "The Adventure of the Turkish Cipher" opens in late November, 1885, but refers to a case that took place in the midst of Holmes' two years at university.</div>

This project has generated so much momentum and interest for the restoration of Undershaw. I've been impressed by the generosity and enthusiasm the readers have shown in their support for these volumes. I was happy for the opportunity to play my small part once more, and it was an honor to participate in Volume IV.</div>

As anyone who reads my literature-oriented pastiches can tell, I'm an English teacher (now retired), and I try to convey my love of great books through my stories about Sherlock Holmes.  One of my all-time favorite short stories which I used to enjoy teaching is Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace."  With Holmes gaining ascendancy in my brain, I began to think of the story in terms of a mystery.  Without giving away the plot of "The Adventure of the Missing Necklace"--let alone giving away Maupassant's--I'll just say that Holmes' encounter with a diamond necklace serves as my explanation for the basis of Maupassant's wonderful story.  Holmes' part in my  piece takes place in 1879 in London's Montague Street and its environs.  He does end up in France, however, where he meets Maupassant.  The timing is important because my intrigue involving Holmes had to occur before Maupassant's story was published in 1884.</div>

My experience with the first MX Anthology was so positive that I couldn't resist the chance to repeat the process.  With encouragement from editor David Marcum, not only could I write about Sherlock Holmes, but I would also be helping the restoration of Undershaw.  As a teacher, I'm proud to lend my support to a project destined to produce a new school.</div>

My chapter is The Case of the Rondel Dagger, which is set in London in March 1880 and narrated by Charles Stewart Mickleburgh, a research fellow at the British Museum. The tale revolves around the unexpected death of an Australian diplomat in Stoke Newington and has the great detective partnering up with Mickleburgh for a whirlwind investigation commissioned by Mycroft Holmes. Mickleburgh proves his worth, being an expert on medieval weaponry, and together the two uncover more about the mysterious Bosworth Order.<br />

I loved the idea of writing about Holmes when he was living in Montague Street, in the period before he met Watson. The relationship between Mickleburgh and Holmes gives us a glimpse of how the detective benefits from - but is sometimes seen to be struggling with - the dynamics of working in partnership. While very different to our beloved Watson, Mickleburgh nevertheless provides us with a fresh perspective on the approach and character of the consulting detective in those early years. I began writing Holmes pastiches in 2015 and my first story, "The Strange Missive of Germaine Wilkes," appeared in Volume I of the anthology. Shortly afterwards, my own collection of Holmes and Watson tales was published by MX under the title, <i>A Farewell to Baker Street</i>. While I have made my name as a non-fiction crime and history writer, I am now pursuing my real dream of penning more and more lively tales about Holmes and Watson. Ensuring that some of these appear in forthcoming volumes of the anthology is important to me as I believe passionately in the campaign to support the continued use and renovation of Undershaw.</div>

The location was chosen over Oxford in large part due to my fond memories of doing a semester abroad there while in college. The time-frame was chosen as it preceded the 1883 publication of "The Silver Hatchet" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the spirit of the Great Game, I suppose that Watson's first literary editor plainly had heard the 'true' version of this story from Watson and subsequently changed many of the details before publishing it in the <i>London Society</i> magazine. Let the truth finally be told!</div>

As for why I wanted to contribute, well, the thought of not doing so as soon as David asked me never crossed my mind! In fact, I dropped the longer tale that I was writing at the time and immediately set to work upon the Double-Edged Hoard, given his rather tight deadline. But after the great pleasure of feeling the weight of Volume I in my hands, I couldn't resist the opportunity to do so again, and all in the name of a great cause! </div>

My story is a Watson-lite story, one in which Holmes investigates a crime while the good doctor is otherwise engaged. So much of the canon is defined by their friendship and I was intrigued to see what influence Watson would exert on Holmes when the Doctor was absent. The story takes place in London, because that’s where Sherlock Holmes lived. I don’t worry much about timelines but it occurs when Holmes and Watson have known each other long enough to hear their friend chiding them even when they are not present.</div>

It recounts a brief incident at that faded grand hotel which occurred while they were on a longer case which will be recounted in my upcoming novel, <i>Unquiet Spirits</i>. Enroute to Montpelier to visit a scientist there, Holmes and Watson detour to this place, where they receive free lodgings in return for Holmes consulting for the  house detective on this small but tricky matter of a jewel theft.</div>

My first visit to Undershaw was with Luke Benjamen Kuhns organized by Steve Emecz  in 2013, and it was a highly emotional moment.  The plight of this place has troubled me since. While controversial, the restoration and repurposing will, I believe, honor the legacy of Conan Doyle.  It was very moving to stand in the very room where the Hound was written, and it is my belief that the study will be restored to resemble its original state. If I can contribute in any way to that, I am very happy to do so.</div>

The story I contributed to Volume IV concerned a request to Holmes from his brother, to come to the aid of a fellow Diogenes Club member, Rodney Trasker. The home of Trasker was the scene of an attempted burglary during which he killed the intruder, Albert Derringsham, who swore revenge with his dying breath. As Trasker was of a nervous disposition, he was particularly disturbed to see from an upstairs window the deceased Derringsham driving a coach at night. When this incident is repeated, Trasker shoots the apparition, blowing it to pieces with his shotgun. He cannot explain these happenings, still less so when Derringsham reappears yet again, no worse for the experience. Subsequently, Trasker appeals to Mycroft for help, hence the involvement of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson.</div>

I wrote this story primarily to assist the project, but I would be less than honest if I did not disclose that I also hoped for some exposure that might result in the attentions of a publisher. Although in my younger days I wrote enough weird fiction to fill a book (<i>In the Night </i>—<i> In the Dark</i>, published by MX, since you ask) I've only ever written one detective story. Unsurprisingly, it's a Sherlock Holmes story, based on two clues that still seem to me rather good. The idea for "The Adventure of the Grace Chalice" had been buzzing around in my head for a very long time before I wrote a proper version, as my entry in the the Sherlock Holmes Society of London's first and only pastiche competition. It was placed third, and was published in the Winter 1987 issue of <i>The Sherlock Holmes Journal</i>. A few years later I revised the story, bringing the style as close as I could to Conan Doyle's, and submitted it to Mike Ashley for The Mammoth Book of New Sherlock Holmes Adventures, published in 1997. It's still entitled "The Adventure of the Grace Chalice", but I changed the client's name, to link the narrative to one of the cases that are mentioned in the canon but not recounted there. Neither the story nor the subsequent audio play mentions a month or a year, but Mike Ashley dates the case to December 1895, and I'll happily agree with that. After all, "it is always 1895", is it not?</div>

The adaptation came about because in 2010 I had volunteered to provide a dramatic entertainment for the Sherlock Holmes Society of London. Rather than badger the industrious Matthew J. Elliott, I decided to see what I could do. The result, later recorded by the same cast (<a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.org.uk/category/podcasts/page/3/" target="_blank">freely downloadable here</a>), works better, I think, than the original narrative version. The action takes place at 221B Baker Street, at a large house in Highgate, near the famous cemetery, and at a mortuary at Stoke Newington, near another notable cemetery.</div>

Why do I want to contribute to the anthology? I want to see that sadly abused house Undershaw brought to life again and put to a use that Arthur Conan Doyle must surely have endorsed. And I'm deeply impressed by the dedication, the imagination and the sheer hard work that Steve Emecz, David Marcum and the MX team have put in to helping the Undershaw project become a reality.</div>

It takes place when Holmes is an established consulting detective - he is well-enough known for his name and fame to have crossed the Atlantic. I like to have Holmes' reputation known to those with whom he comes into contact, when he is at the height of his professional career, as it makes for interesting interactions between the detective and his clients, (and his quarry at times). The adventure remains untold, by the way, as it involves some unsavoury doings of Harden's in the past. Naturally, as a good Victorian gentleman, Watson refrains from giving details of these, but we may fill in the gaps for ourselves.</span></div>

The story is set in 1897, as this would have been a period when Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson were at the height of their fame and were recognisable public figures. I adore the Baker Street sitting room as the setting where so many of their adventures begin, and can quite happily write long scenes of dialogue and bickering and banter between the two friends, with occasional interjections from Mrs Hudson, before a client even knocks on the door with a problem to present for the detective's consideration. In fact, Imagination Theatre recently recorded my Holmes and Watson two-hander, "The Case of the Confounded Chronicler," which focuses entirely on the two men and occurs entirely within their familiar sitting room, for their long-running <i>The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i> radio series. So by commencing this new story in a different environment, and bringing the "client" into contact with our heroes in a different manner, I wanted to give a little shake up to my own approach to tackling a Sherlock Holmes adventure. Besides, where better to present a tale of train-travel and terror than in a compartment on an actual train?</div>

I was just one out of the many contributors to the initial project that grew in scope to three weighty volumes (my story, "The Adventure of the Seventh Stain" appears in Volume 1), and I was delighted not only by the books themselves - which are incredibly handsome editions packed to bursting with wonderful stories by some hugely talented and imaginative people - but also by the tremendous response to the collection on Kickstarter and subsequently.</div>

So when David Marcum revealed there were more volumes in the works, it wasn't a difficult choice in agreeing to contribute a further untold tale. I wrote it because Editor David Marcum came to Oxford, UK, where I live, in 2015, and I showed him around and showed interest in his pastiche project - and then asked myself why I should not try my hand again exactly 40 years after my co-author Austin Mitchelson and I published two barely adequate novella-length pastiches - The Earthquake Machine and Hellbirds.   I nod in the direction of Austin by giving his surname to a character in this new story.</div>

My story is entitled "A Game of Illusion" and takes place in 1899, when someone claiming to be 'Raffles' threatens to steal a famous emerald.  The only problem is that A.J. Raffles, the infamous Amateur Cracksman, is dead!  I chose that particular year as it was the period of time who Raffles was known to be "dead" and Watson was back living in Baker Street.</div>

Holmes sees nothing strange in this, until Collins tells him that three years ago Wargrave had taken a pistol and blown his own brains out…</div>

I chose 1888 simply because I think it is a time when Holmes is at his best.  He and Watson are established companions but the shadow of Moriarty has yet to loom over Baker Street.  Holmes is at the height of his powers and his fame is widespread, which seemed to fit with the idea of a lowly old labourer knowing about him and being able to consult him.  Also, of course, in real terms, it is the year of the Jack the Ripper murders, which is a topic which has long fascinated me since I was a young (perhaps far too young!) boy.</div>

As with volumes 1-3, I think this is an ambitious and exciting project.  I am a writer and a lifelong Holmes fanatic and the opportunity to contribute to such a continuing and important collection of new Holmes stories was too good to miss. </div>

But, as with my contribution to volume 2, it is not simply having the opportunity to contribute to a new series of Holmes stories (which is of course always a welcome thing).  There is also the added incentive of the cause behind it.  The preservation of Undershaw is an important project and being asked to assist in the preservation project by doing something which I love was a request which was impossible to turn down.  I think the calibre and the number of writers who agreed to participate is testament to the passion for (and the importance of) the cause.  I think it’s something of which everyone involved with should and will be proud.</div>

My tale is called "The Adventure of the Impossible Murders" and it is set in 1884. I have a weakness for early tales of the Holmes-Watson duo, so it is set in the early days. Peers of British Empire are simply dropping dead at an alarming rate, and when a frightened one approaches our favourite pair, they reluctantly agree to look into the matter. Holmes is a bit more involved than usual, Watson gets passionate and Lestrade suspects(?) Holmes. Er...I think that ought to be enough - any more would be spoilers!<br />

As usual when I write, I don’t know a lot when I start – I wait for Watson to tell me. In this case, I found out from listening to Watson when the adventure occurred, as I certainly didn’t plan it that way ahead of time. When the narrative begins, Holmes and Watson are visiting Lestrade’s office at New Scotland Yard on another matter when they observe a small circus that has set up across the Thames on an abandoned lot. Deciding to walk across Westminster Bridge and have a look at it, they are quickly involved – as so often happens to Great Detectives wherever they decide to visit someplace – in a murder.</div>

We have no Sherlockian centenaries in 2016 — well, that's not true, since we've just been celebrating the film starring William Gillette as Holmes, which was <a href="http://ihose.co/1916film" target="_blank">produced by Essanay in 1916</a>, but no centenaries of actual Sherlock Holmes stories, anyway. After <i>The Valley of Fear</i>, serialized in 1914-15, there would be no more Canonical tales until 1917. <br /><br />Arthur Conan Doyle was busy with other matters, chiefly in writing about the First World War. The only fiction he published during 1916 was "The Prisoner's Defence," a brief love story with a war background. His writings in magazines and newspapers that year were about air raids, the killing of civilians in battle zones, and body armor — and, towards the end of the year, the doctrine of Spiritualism, as he at last declared himself a believer.<br /><br />April 2016 does mark the centenary of a very important work by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: "The Battle of Mons," appearing in the <i>Strand</i> magazine, the first installment of what would eventually be a six-volume history, <i><a amzn-ps-bm-asin="1783946253" class="amzn_ps_bm_tl" data-amzn-link-id="bc516fb39cd4b5b673ca5d6fbf09002d" data-amzn-ps-bm-keyword="The British Campaign in France and Flanders" href="http://www.amazon.com/The-British-Campaign-France-Flanders/dp/1783946253/ref=as_li_bk_tl/?tag=thebakerstree-20&linkId=bc516fb39cd4b5b673ca5d6fbf09002d&linkCode=ktl" id="amznPsBmLink_7745384" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The British Campaign in France and Flanders</a><img alt="" border="0" height="0" id="amznPsBmPixel_7745384" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?source=bk&t=thebakerstree-20&bm-id=default&l=ktl&linkId=bc516fb39cd4b5b673ca5d6fbf09002d&_cb=1461526761553" style="border: none !important; height: 0px !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; width: 0px !important;" width="0" /></i>. The Battle of Mons had been fought in August 1914, barely two weeks after the first British troops landed in Europe at the war's beginning. It ended in a massive British retreat, a traumatic experience that helped create the enduring legend of "the angels of Mons," who guided lost soldiers to safety. Ironically, the angels were themselves fiction, created in a short story by Arthur Machen, and thus are not mentioned in Conan Doyle's historical work.<br /><br />In May 1916, Conan Doyle headed for Europe himself, invited to see the action at close range in order to write war propaganda and history more convincingly. His tour of the action in France and Italy lasted about a month and led to the short book <i><a amzn-ps-bm-asin="B00847U3CG" class="amzn_ps_bm_tl" data-amzn-link-id="2596cd8b6d663328354b6afa2b5ff673" data-amzn-ps-bm-keyword="A Visit to Three Fronts" href="http://www.amazon.com/Visit-Three-Fronts-June-1916-ebook/dp/B00847U3CG/ref=as_li_bk_tl/?tag=thebakerstree-20&linkId=2596cd8b6d663328354b6afa2b5ff673&linkCode=ktl" id="amznPsBmLink_1866739" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">A Visit to Three Fronts</a><img alt="" border="0" height="0" id="amznPsBmPixel_1866739" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?source=bk&t=thebakerstree-20&bm-id=default&l=ktl&linkId=2596cd8b6d663328354b6afa2b5ff673&_cb=1461526746362" style="border: none !important; height: 0px !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; width: 0px !important;" width="0" /></i>, published in August.<br /><br />In that reminiscence, he speaks of visiting the French army's headquarters at Montreuil and meeting General Georges Louis Humbert. "He fires his remarks like pistol shots at this man or that," Doyle wrote. <div>

"Once to my horror he fixed me with his hard little eyes and demanded 'Sherlock Holmes, <i>est ce qu'il est un soldat dans l'armée Anglaise</i>?' ['Is he a soldier in the English army?'] The whole table waited in an awful hush. '<i>Mais, mon general</i>,' I stammered, '<i>Il est trop vieux pour service</i>.' ['General, he is too old for service.'] There was general laughter, and I felt that I had scrambled out of an awkward place."</blockquote>
<br />But when he returned to England, he decided he had better write "The War Service of Sherlock Holmes" after all. That story eventually appeared under the title we now recognize, "His Last Bow" — but in 1917, not 1916. We can celebrate its centenary next year.</div>

I was delighted to learn recently that somebody has translated <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> into Latin. Such a volume may not be of much practical use to anybody except <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/05/episode-64-sherlock-holmes-in.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Don Hobbs</a>, who can add another language to his massive polyglot collection, but it's bound to be fun for those of us who can struggle through Latin text with effort and the occasional reference to a dictionary.<br />

Well, that's what I thought, anyway.<br />

Translating a popular or classic book into Latin is not a completely new idea. So I cheerfully ordered <i><a amzn-ps-bm-asin="1523911875" class="amzn_ps_bm_tl" data-amzn-link-id="ee344f0d77dbabfd8afdc7169771f074" data-amzn-ps-bm-keyword="Canis Baskervilles" href="http://www.amazon.com/Canis-Baskervilles-The-Hound-Latin/dp/1523911875/ref=as_li_bk_tl/?tag=thebakerstree-20&linkId=ee344f0d77dbabfd8afdc7169771f074&linkCode=ktl" id="amznPsBmLink_6819923" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Canis Baskervilles</a><img alt="" border="0" height="0" id="amznPsBmPixel_6819923" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?source=bk&t=thebakerstree-20&bm-id=default&l=ktl&linkId=ee344f0d77dbabfd8afdc7169771f074&_cb=1461522628311" style="border: none !important; height: 0px !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; width: 0px !important;" width="0" /></i>, with only a moment's hesitation to wonder why "Baskervilles" was pluralized in English rather than in Latin as "Baskervillium" or something of the sort. The book has arrived, a paperback with, oddly, no page numbers and no translator's name. It appears to be published by <a href="http://onyxtranslations.com/" target="_blank">Onyx Translations</a>, which, as far as I can tell from a brief web search, is not the same enterprise as <a href="http://onyxtranslation.com/" target="_blank">Onyx Translation</a>. At this point my Spidey sense (<i>sensus a tinea</i>) was tingling just a little.<br />

The technical quality of the production is not high. Even the punctuation is a dog's breakfast, with single, double and guillemet quotation marks used interchangeably. There are random capitalized words, words broken with underscores, digits in place of letters. Names and titles of characters are inconsistent: Sir Charles and Sir Henry are "Carolus" and "Henricus" and their surname is often Baskerville (but sometimes just Basker), but they are alternately addressed as "Domine" and "Sir". When Holmes, Watson and the baronet get to their destination in chapter 6, Barrymore greets them: "Salve, Henricus Welcome to Hall Baskerville?" (Yes, that's a question mark. Oh, and did I mention that Dr. Mortimer is "Dr. Mortuo"?)<br />
<br />
All these issues are noticeable even before one gets serious about trying to understand the Latin text, which, not to put too fine a point on it, is gibberish, with interpolated English words and garbled Latin syntax. Chapter 10 of <i>The Hound</i>, for example, offers the translator this sentence:<br />

Even someone with limited Latin might be suspicious at the translation Onyx offers: </div>

"Sunt lonely domos Spargentur Maurus et est Midae ausurum nothing." </blockquote>

No, "lonely" and "nothing" are not Latin words, and one would hardly expect them to be too challenging for a translator, but there you are. "Spargentur" is a verb, meaning "they are scattered", though why it's capitalized in the middle of a sentence is not clear; "Maurus" is a Moor like Othello; and as for "Midae", well, your guess is as good as mine. <br />
<br />
I'll spare you another full sentence, but chapter 11 of the translation makes reference to "gray magnam avem, gull sive Curlew", which is as much English as Latin, and chapter 12 offers "Quod Mrs vident, Laura leonum", which is incomprehensible (and turns "Lyons" into lions). This sort of thing is on every page. Flip through the book and notice "shelterless", "manorial", "fantastic", "suggestiveness", and scores of other English words in the middle of Latin sentences.<br />
<br />
The only explanation for all these oddities is that the translation was done by a computer program, and not <a href="https://youtu.be/KAfKFKBlZbM" target="_blank">checked by anyone</a> with any knowledge of Latin at all. Interestingly, if you put a couple of sentences of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> into <a href="http://translate.google.com/" target="_blank">Google Translate</a>, the text you get is imperfect, but a lot more sleek and comprehensible than what appears between these brown covers (with a reproduction of the classic hound silhouette drawing by Alfred Garth Jones). There are other Latin translators online, but I have not found one that could be responsible for this mess.<br />
<br />
The Onyx translation of <i>The Hound</i> is not in any real sense Latin text, it is of no value for anybody wanting to practice reading Latin, and it is not fit to stand on a shelf beside Pooh and Alice. It would be lovely if somebody would actually produce a Latin version of the book, but sorry, this isn't it.<br />

That is because the story focuses on teen descendants of Holmes and Watson at a boarding school in modern-day Connecticut. Jamie Watson has been sent to Sherringford School on a rugby scholarship, the very same school that Charlotte Holmes attends. He’s always known of her; after all, he is a Watson.  But he has never met this member of the Holmes family that is his own age. The Holmes family has always been different, and has taken to training their children at an early age in the whole art of deduction. By the time she is a sophomore in high school, Charlotte Holmes is obviously not like any other girl at his school. Even though she is a descendant of the famous Holmes, helping Scotland Yard solve crimes at the age of ten, and Jamie is a descendant of the famous Watson, Charlotte is not interested in his friendship.<o:p></o:p></div>

That is, until a fellow student is murdered. Both Charlotte and Jamie have bad histories with the dead student, making them suspects to the police and outcasts among their classmates. The first installment is written with a definitive voice that doesn’t try to imitate the Watsonian voice that so many pastiches are forced to use. Ms. Cavallaro gives the reader succinct but clear introductions to her two main characters, gets the story started, and lets her characters develop as the pages turn. Although the story lags a bit in the middle, the murder and canon-related crimes, family dramas in both the Watson and Holmes clans, as well as interpersonal relationships with other teenagers keeps you hooked.<o:p></o:p><br />

Many sly nods are laid out in the pages for Sherlockians, such as Jamie Watson’s real name (James), a discussion about Watson's watch, and of course, the name of their school. But if the reader is unfamiliar with the original Canon, these Easter eggs don’t detract from the real story, and it is strong enough on its own.</div>

Many times with pastiches, references to the Canon can be forced or heavy handed, enough so that they detract from the story being told. Gladly, Ms. Cavallaro doesn’t fall into this trap. The theme for the evening is <b>Sherlock Holmes: Celebrating 125 Years of Perfection in Detection</b>, marking the anniversary of Arthur Conan Doyle’s publication of “A Scandal in Bohemia” in <i>The Strand Magazine</i>, which became the first short story in the anthology <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>.<br />

As Elementary winds up its fourth season, let's touch on the news from CBS last month when they <a href="http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/elementary-season-five-renewal-cbs-drama/" target="_blank">announced the renewal of Elementary for a fifth season</a>.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>There were questions on
whether CBS would bring back the show.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> 
</span>The live ratings have taken a dip this season and the network has moved
the show from Thursdays at 10:00 PM to Sundays at 10:00 PM, a slot that been
the final resting place of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Mentalist</i>
and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">CSI: Miami</i>. After four seasons, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Elementary</i> has 96 episodes, enough for a
successful syndication.</div>

However, the <a href="http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2014/06/09/live7-dvr-ratings-complete-2013-14-season-the-big-bang-theory-leads-adults-18-49-ratings-increase-raising-hope-earns-biggest-percentage-increase-the-blacklist-tope-viewership-gains/271900/">live ratings only tell part of the story</a>. The
live + 7 day ratings <a href="http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2016/03/07/broadcast-live-7-ratings-feb-15-21-2016-week-22/">adds millions of viewers</a>, especially in the all-important
18-49 demographic. The fans of the show actively seek it out, DVRing it or watching
it on demand at their convenience. The show is made by CBS Studios, which gives
the network a financial incentive to keep the show going.<br />
<br />
One of the long-time
knocks against <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Elementary</i> has been
that it was crass ploy to cash in on Sherlock Holmes and the <span style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">BBC's</span><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"> Sherlock</i>. Such an argument seems to assume that the British
Broadcasting Corporation is a non-profit and ignores the fact that <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Sherlock</i> makes <a href="http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/3cc9afc4-2d0e-11e4-911b-00144feabdc0.html#axzz44nl7prjc">untold millions</a> for the
Beeb; Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman tchotchkes are ubiquitous. You’d
be hard-pressed to find similar Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu merch.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/columnist/2015/11/04/cbs-elementary-jonny-lee-miller-review/75105242/">Television critics</a> who are not Sherlockians consistently praise the show for its acting
and intelligent scripts. Sherlockian critics (a majority of which tend to be
BBC fans) sniff that CBS’ show is a<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"> procedural</i>,
as if the definition of the word contained a whiff of excrement, forgetting
that long ago <a href="http://wessexpress.com/html/knox.html">Father Ronald Knox</a> enumerated the Canon’s own procedural elements.
Sunday night is presently the home of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">60
Minutes</i>, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Madame Secretary</i> and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Good Wife</i> making <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Elementary</i> a good fit with CBS’ prestige
line-up.</div>

Legitimate Sherlockians — A Never-Ending Controversy

<br />Name-calling about who's a legitimate Sherlockian, and disagreement about the things the young people enjoy doing — it sounds like the culture conflicts of today's Sherlockian world, but what do you know, the same things were going on half a century ago. A lot of the controversy now is about ships, whereas in 1968 it was about crossovers, but otherwise, well, we've been here before.<br /><br /><h3>
"she went straight to her uncle" [BERY]</h3>
The story starts with the September 1966 issue of <i>Baker Street Pages</i>, a newsletter I edited during my teenage years. That issue contained a six-line letter from Barbara Goldfield, a teen in the suburbs of Philadelphia. She made a suggestion that would hardly raise an eyebrow today: she identified Professor Moriarty's criminal network with T.H.R.U.S.H., the evil organization battling U.N.C.L.E., the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_from_U.N.C.L.E."><i>The Man from U.N.C.L.E.</i></a>, starring Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo and David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin, was a hugely popular series on NBC television that year, and Barbara suggested using it as a source for a study of Moriarty. <br /><br />"If she is so interested in U.N.C.L.E., T.H.R.U.S.H. and all the books thereof," someone shot back in the next issue, "I suggest that she resign from the Pageboys and start an U.N.C.L.E. society on the happenings of that far-fetched mythical group of morons." Such invective might not be out of place on Tumblr, Facebook or other social networks today, although most Sherlockians are familiar with crossovers, linking Holmes with everybody from Doctor Who to Fu Manchu.<br /><br />In December 1967, Barbara was back in <i>Baker Street Pages</i> with what would turn out to be one of the classic pieces of Sherlockian writing, a page and a half of text under the title "Did Sherlock Holmes Have Pointed Ears?" This was crossover more enduring than anything that had been said about U.N.C.L.E., for it pointed out the parallel between <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2010/07/search-of-glor_3.html#.VxHaiTArLb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes and Mr. Spock of <i>Star Trek</i></a> (then just one year into the original series). The link between Holmes and <i>Star Trek</i> is more or less taken for granted now, especially as <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose85" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Nicholas Meyer</a>, the author of <i>The Seven-Per-Cent Solution</i>, is known to have introduced Sherlockian themes into <i>Star Trek</i> episodes. But 25 years before Spock claimed Holmes as one of his ancestors, Barbara nailed the similarities. She had also written brief pieces connecting Holmes with Batman, Gandalf, the Phantom of the Opera, and probably others.<br /><br />This was odd stuff, in a Sherlockian world largely committed to the theories of William S. Baring-Gould about <a amzn-ps-bm-asin="B0014YL4WY" class="amzn_ps_bm_tl" data-amzn-link-id="84b3bb9608cb4b9c63f5032ba762a95b" data-amzn-ps-bm-keyword="sherlock holmes of baker street" href="http://www.amazon.com/Illustrated-Caldecott-Greenaway-Historical-Baring-Gould/dp/B0014YL4WY/ref=as_li_bk_tl/?tag=thebakerstree-20&linkId=84b3bb9608cb4b9c63f5032ba762a95b&linkCode=ktl" id="amznPsBmLink_9719898" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Holmes's love affair with Irene Adler</a><img alt="" border="0" height="0" id="amznPsBmPixel_9719898" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?source=bk&t=thebakerstree-20&bm-id=default&l=ktl&linkId=84b3bb9608cb4b9c63f5032ba762a95b&_cb=1460788653704" style="border: none !important; height: 0px !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; width: 0px !important;" width="0" /> and his involvement in solving the Jack the Ripper murders, to say nothing of Watson's San Francisco marriage. (Nothing unusual here, nothing to see, but be sure to read Rex Stout's "<a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/02/watson-actually-was-woman.html#.VxHbATArLb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Watson Was a Woman</a>.") Another teenage Sherlockian said in an angry letter to <i>Baker Street Pages</i> that he was "sick of being patronized" by the older generation who took it upon themselves to tell junior Sherlockians what to do and what to write. However, he agreed that quite a bit of what the younger generation was writing was piffle, including invocations of Mr. Spock, Gandalf, and the rest. <br /><br />Generations are always in conflict (have you read "<a href="http://www.pagebypagebooks.com/Arthur_Conan_Doyle/The_Adventures_of_Sherlock_Holmes/ADVENTURE_XI_THE_ADVENTURE_OF_THE_BERYL_CORONET_p1.html">The Beryl Coronet</a>" lately?) but 1968 was the beginning of a particularly dramatic time, with student demonstrations, riots, confrontation over the Vietnam war. My generation were the baby boomers, and there were millions of us, and as we reached the age to assert ourselves in political and social change, we were also ready to stand on our dignity in the Sherlockian world as well. The letters column in <i>Baker Street Pages</i> makes it clear that we did not agree on much (there were as many people denouncing the Spock and Gandalf crossovers as there were discovering them), and we were not always setting ourselves up in opposition to the established Sherlockians, but we were definitely on the scene. <div>
<br /><h3>
"It's all been done before and will be again." [VALL]</h3>
Now, of course, we're the older generation. Unease in the Sherlockian world these days centers largely on two issues: whether there is a subtext of homosexuality in the relationship between Holmes and Watson, and whether fans of the BBC <i>Sherlock</i>   series, without an accompanying interest in the original Holmes canon, are <a href="http://www.criminalelement.com/blogs/2012/11/upon-the-clear-distinction-between-fandom-and-the-baker-street-irregulars-lyndsay-faye-sherlock-holmes-arthur-conan-doyle-elementary">legitimately Sherlockians</a>. <br /></div>
<div>
However, there is also sometimes a generational divide, complicated by the reality that the majority of younger Sherlockians, and especially BBC fans, are female, but the majority of older Sherlockians are still male. Unremarkably, there was also a strain of gender politics in the tensions of the 1960s, which surfaced when <a href="http://ash-nyc.com/">the Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes</a> actually <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose89" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">picketed the Baker Street Irregulars' 1968 dinner</a>. Even apart from that issue, there was certainly a surge of young people impatient to find their place and flex their muscles.<br /><br />No wonder, then, that in January 1969, Barbara announced in print that she was pulling back a little from Sherlockian activity. "It seems," the originator of the Holmes-and-Spock theory wrote in annoyance, "that if the most slightly out-of-the-way theory is brought up by one of the members, other members fall upon him like wolves on a lamb." </div>

This episode is a little different. As you know, we alternate between interview shows and Burt and Scott discussing whatever comes to mind. In this case, we had a number of news-related items to stitch together, but we had help in doing so. This was something of a chowder, a goulash, a salmagundi, a boullabaise, a melange of content.<br />

First, Bob Katz, BSI ("Dr. Anstruther") joined us again, but this time he told us all about <a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/sherlock2016.html">"The Mind and Art of Sherlock Holmes"</a> — the latest in the BSI's series of quadrennial conferences. This gathering at the Chatauqua Institution is not exclusive to Baker Street Irregulars; it's open to any Sherlockian who wishes to participate in a conference centered around art of all sorts. In this case, that includes theater, film, music and even podcasting (!). Plenty of food, drink, Sherlockian shopping, sightseeing and more.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://researchportal.port.ac.uk/portal/en/persons/rachel-smillie(7747eead-553b-4e1d-80e7-08865a9d2a2b).html">Rachel Smillie, Ph.D.</a> is a research assistant at the <a href="https://researchportal.port.ac.uk/portal/en/">University of Porsmouth</a>, where she's conducting a study of Sherlockians and their organizations, called "Celebrities, Fans and Muses." She is interested in getting in touch with Sherlockians from all over the world. We subject Ron Lies to a <i>Wait Wait Don't Tell Me</i>-inspired quiz in which Scott does a mediocre <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Kurtis">Bill Kurtis</a> impression, and then we get on with the news.<br />
<br />
The Editor's Gas-Lamp is "The Days We Envy" from Vol. 4, No. 3 of the <i>Baker Street Journal</i> from 1954. And our Easter egg contains some tales from Down Under and a surprise update on one of the earlier news items. Not to mention a spoken error about geography, because Scott had the wrong country on the brain.<br />

Finally, we discuss Episode 95 in which we'll interview Jamie Mahoney and Leah Guinn, authors of <i>A Curious Collection of Dates</i>. And we brainstorm what we'll do in Episode 100.
