If you've got another hobby or passion, odds are you'll find a way to incorporate it into your love of Sherlock Holmes.<br /> <br /> Over the years, we've met Sherlockians who are also interested in horse racing, railroads, P.G. Wodehouse, pin collecting, the <span style="font-style: italic;">Titanic</span>, antiques, handwriting analysis, coin and stamp collecting, woodworking, needlepoint, jewelry making, wine, pipe collecting, music, period firearms, Victorian attire - the list goes on and on. Really, there's no limit to the connections we can make between our interests, if we're passionate enough about them.<br /> <br /> So it was with little surprise - but with great amusement - that we looked at the above photo sent by <a href="http://www.cc-chapman.com/" target="_blank">a colleague</a> of the individual who is a Holmes Trooper.<br /> <br /> We couldn't help but think:<br /> <br /> <div style="text-align: center;"> <h3> <span style="font-style: italic;">"May the force be with you, old chap."</span></h3> </div> <br /> <i>Star Wars</i> and Sherlock Holmes. Upon finishing the article, it seemed that it had been written for anyone who has attended a BSI Weekend in the past. A few of the familiar landmarks that made the C-J's list:<br /> <ul> <li><a href="http://www.algonquinhotel.com/">The Algonquin Hotel</a>, the oldest still-operating hotel in New York and the birthplace of the New Yorker. It is also the unofficial headquarters of the BSI during our January weekends.</li> <li><a href="http://www.mcsorleysnewyork.com/">McSorley's Old Ale House</a>, which usually plays host to the conclusion of the Christopher Morley Walk, is noted for its very reasonably-priced food.</li> <li><a href="http://mysteriousbookshop.com/">The Mysterious Bookshop</a> is Otto Penzler's book-lover's haven, now transplanted in a trendy TriBeCa neighborhood. Although it's slightly out of the way, Otto's hospitality and tremendous selection make it worth the trip.</li> </ul> Print out the original article and file it away for January. You'll find yourself making a checklist of these places and being able to get through quite a bit of it. We can't always have good days. Occasionally we have dark hours that proceed better times. Jeremy Brett, a notorious sufferer of bipolar disorder, was no stranger to that. His friends, colleagues and fans saw the disease take its toll on him over time.<br /><br />Fortunately for us, he was able to grace us with some very excellent appearances as Sherlock Holmes. At least that’s what the publishing world would have us believe. With the advent of the final Harry Potter book this summer, there’s a fear that with J.K. Rowling’s long-awaited finale will come the end of the cottage industry of related Harry Potter books.<br /> <br /> The May 10 edition of the <span style="font-style: italic;">Wall Street Journal</span> ran a piece (<a href="http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB117876383431898056-GThmnkKdFTp3CJQAcEEzWOdEkHA_20080509.html?mod=tff_main_tff_top">Last Hurrah for ‘Harry’ Offshoots?</a>) in which the books about the books were called “a whole literary ecosystem,” while the original Potter canon was likened to “whales to which many barnacles have attached themselves.” With over 190 books in print, it’s easy to see why. But is there cause for concern about the demise of Potterian scholarship and publishing?<br /> <br /> I think you know where I’m going with this. We’ve seen this phenomenon before, with Sherlockian scholarship paving the way. Before Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (or was it Dr. Watson?) had completed the Canon in 1927, Ronald Knox had penned his seminal treatise <a href="http://lachlan.bluehaze.com.au/books/knox_essays_in_satire/index.html">Studies in the Literature of Sherlock Holmes</a> in 1911. Only four years after Conan Doyle’s death did the Baker Street Irregulars came into being; it was just over a decade later that they began publishing the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/"><i>Baker Street Journal</i></a>.<br /> <br /> To this day, Sherlockian scholarship has not dimmed. The BSJ is still being published some 60 years later. In England, the <a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.org.uk/journal.php"><i>Sherlock Holmes Journal</i></a> is churned out on a regular basis and has been for over 50 years. Countless societies around the world continue with their own publications; online discussion groups flourish.<br /> <br /> Of course, the characters were never under copyright, so great liberties have been taken by a variety of authors, placing Holmes with concurrent historical figures and other literary characters, as well as in unlikely situations including sailing on the Titanic and getting married.<br /> <br /> While the Harry Potter characters will be well protected from such pastiches in the short term, parodies and pure scholarship are fair game. I suppose the question remains: will the seven original books continue to hold the interest of future generations in the same way they’ve enchanted the current adolescents and adults alike? If so, is the content of such a rich type that unending scholarship can continue to be churned out, or are these simply “beach books” – sensational and fun reading - that helped sustain the publishing industry for a short time?<br /> <br /> I'll close with a more controversial question for you, dear reader: were the Holmes stories simply viewed as Victorian/Edwardian beach books? They have not delineated any specifics, but it is thought that if a film already has a PG-13 rating thanks to levels of violence, drug use and sex, smoking will tip it over the edge to make it an R movie.<br /> <br /> Evidently, anti-smoking activists think this doesn't go far enough, as they would like to see an automatic R attached to any movie that features smoking. They want to protect the children.<br /> <br /> But I ask: would a Sherlock Holmes movie with a tobacco-free Holmes help the kids? Would they be better off by seeing the first unofficial consulting detective without his pipe? Think about it: the entire world knows Sherlock Holmes because of his profile in his hat and his pipe. Remove the latter and he’s just a mad hatter.<br /> <br /> Just think of the consequences:<br /> <ul> <li>His <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1842329308?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1842329308">three-pipe problem</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1842329308" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /> would become a three lollipop problem. Not to mention the creators of Kojak, who’d sue for copyright infringement.</li> <li>What would Holmes store in his Persian slipper?</li> <li>When he’s in a disputatious mood, what physical object would he choose?</li> </ul> We've seen the modern version of this taken to its logical conclusion in the BBC's <i>Sherlock</i> with the three-patch problem utilizing nicotine patches instead. But Sherlock and Mycroft do enjoy a cigarette from time to time, despite the best efforts of Watson and Mrs. Hudson.<br /> <br /> These are the ramifications if the character were forced to go cold turkey. If he retained all of his addictions as we know them, it seems that any Holmes movie would likely receive an R rating, thus keeping away the younger crowd. As if we need any more obstacles in introducing Sherlock Holmes to kids…<br /> <br /> --<br /> <br />

"It was a ship which is associated with the giant rat of Sumatra, a story for which the world is not yet prepared."</blockquote> <br /> We have no other information about the <span style="font-style: italic;">Matilda Briggs</span>. But there are some theories that there was a connection with the real-life mystery ship, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Celeste" style="font-style: italic;">Mary Celeste</a>.<br /> <br /> <span id="fullpost"><br />The <span style="font-style: italic;">Mary Celeste</span> was an abandoned ghost ship found off the coast of Portugal in 1872. If you'd like more background about the ship, check the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Celeste">Wikipedia article</a>.<br /><br />The connection to the <span style="font-style: italic;">Matilda Briggs</span>? In actuality, there was a woman on board named Sophia</span><span id="fullpost"> Matilda Briggs. And in 1884, Arthur Conan Doyle popularized the myth by making it the basis of his story "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Habakuk_Jephson%27s_Statement" title="J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement">J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement</a>."<br /><br />And the reason for mentioning it all all right now? There are news reports that a "ghost yacht" <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6574547.stm">was found off the coast of Australia</a> with its crew missing, a battered sail, computers functional, and table set for dinner. Could it be another case of the Mary Celeste? We have previewed a copy and recommend it with our highest regard. Stick with us. This is a long, but worthwhile post to read.<br /> <br /> <span id="fullpost">While the "Classic Themes" version was at least representative of the theme, that orchestra was<a href="http://www.filmreference.com/images/sjff_04_img1597.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://www.filmreference.com/images/sjff_04_img1597.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; width: 200px;" /></a> tinny in comparison to what is now available from Tadlow Music. As well it should, since the music is performed by the <a href="http://www.city-of-prague-philharmonic-orchestra.org/en/article.asp?article_id=29&lang_id=2" target="_blank">City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra</a> with the same orchestral line-up that Rózsa used: 26 violins, 10 violas, 10 celli, 5 basses, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, harp, piano, celesta and timpani plus 4 percussion. The original Rózsa sketches were obtained from Syracuse University, containing not only the complete music as heard in the film, but additional and alternate cues never used.<br /><br />With over 77 minutes of music, the richness and emotion of Rózsa's score is more evident than ever. Solo violinist Lucie Svehlova truly captures the depth of loneliness, melancholy and quirkiness of Holmes through her interpretation. One can almost feel him longing for a relationship other than the cerebral, never to find it. There are alternate cues for some of the Scottish music in the film, and the original version of the main titles.<br /><br />The liner notes that accompany the CD are extensive - the booklet is 24 pages long and filled with information about the life of Rózsa, notes on the cues, and details about the production of this new recording. In it, Rózsa's daughter Juliet writes:</span><br /> <blockquote> <span id="fullpost">Father was extremely overjoyed at the prospect of scoring the life of Holmes. As he says in his autobiography <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0922066175?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0922066175" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>Double Life</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0922066175" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" />, "the script had the wit, the imagination and the charm of Wilder's best films and I was certain that this was going to be the best of them all...as to the music, I enjoyed adapting my Concerto."</span><br /> <span id="fullpost"><br /></span></blockquote> <span id="fullpost">Billy Wilder had a grand vision for the 260-page shooting screenplay with a $10 million budget. <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005JKHF?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00005JKHF" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00005JKHF" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /></i> was set to be three hours and twenty minutes with an intermission, but was drastically cut after studio executives demanded a shorter version. Wilder acquiesced, taking out what Rózsa considered some of the best material. According to the composer, what resulted was:</span><br /> <blockquote> <span id="fullpost">...two episodes were cut and hacked about in an attempt to make one story out of two. The weakest story, about a submarine disguised as the Loch Ness Monster was left intact, but elsewhere all the best bits were eliminated. And a common difficulty is locating that book that you know you just saw and making sense of an ever-increasing library.<br /><br />By day I work in the marketing world where my specialty is social media - the convergence of marketing, advertising, PR and technology - taking the forms of blogs, podcasts, online communities, wikis, RSS feeds, etc. The Baker Street Blog in its current form exists because of my interest/expertise in this area. As a by-product of this work, I get to see a lot of social networking sites that can enhance productivity, make our lives easier, or are just plain fun.<br /><br />Here are three new solutions for book lovers that I thought you might want to check out for yourself. Nor is it one of the tasks of this blog to which I look forward. But I believe it's a part of the responsibility I've taken on in the Sherlockian community.<br /><br />Ely M. Liebow, BSI ("Inspector Gregory") passed away this weekend. For those who knew him, Ely was a deeply thoughtful and intellectual man with a superb sense of humor and a deep knowledge of Sherlock Holmes. I didn't know him well, but I did manage to raise a few glasses with him in a suite at the Iroquois Hotel some 10 or 12 years ago after my first BSI Dinner (and before the Iroquois went upscale). He was quiet in that room of rabblerousers (you know who you are!), but when he spoke, he was heard. And then there was usually heard a thunder of laughter.<br /><br />In addition to the Baker Street Irregulars, Ely was a member of Hugo's Companions, the Hounds of the Baskerville and 140 Varieties of Tobacco Ash. He appeared at a number of conferences over the years and was known for his signature Sherlockian book:<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0879721987?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0879721987">Dr. Joe Bell: Model for Sherlock Holmes</a>, which has just been re-released. And the estimable Brad Keefauver has him listed at #70 on the <a href="http://www.sherlockpeoria.net/Report_pages/top100writers.html">Hundred Hottest Sherlockian Writers of the Last Century</a>.<br /><br />Ely's obituary ran in the <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.legacy.com/ChicagoTribune/Obituaries.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=87044995">Chicago Tribune</a> and the <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.legacy.com/ChicagoSunTimes/DeathNotices.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=87006080">Chicago Sun-Times</a>:<br /><blockquote>Ely M.
