We've always been fascinated with the use of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_fever" target="_blank">brain fever</a> as a malady in the Canon. Brain fever is a medical condition where a part of the brain becomes inflamed and causes symptoms that present as a fever.<br />
<br />
As such, diagnoses might range from encephalitis to meningitis to scarlet fever. But if we look at the sufferers of brain fever in the Sherlock Holmes stories, this was something else entirely.<br />
<br />
Think about the conditions under which each of these individuals came down with brain fever:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Sarah Cushing</b> ("The Cardboard Box") received an unpleasant delivery related to her sister and brother-in-law.</li>
<li><b>Alice Rucastle</b> ("The Copper Beeches") was harassed and mentally abused by her father.</li>
<li><b>Nancy Barclay</b> ("The Crooked Man") was visited by a past love she thought long dead.</li>
<li><b>Rachel Howells</b> ("The Musgrave Ritual") knew that the butler did it, but had other plans.</li>
<li><b>Percy Phelps</b> ("The Naval Treaty") had the responsibility of the Empire on his shoulders when he lost his homework.</li>
</ul>

Each of them had a severe mental shock before contracting brain fever. These were all what we would today call a nervous breakdown or something more specific of a mental illness: anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, etc. </div>

Interestingly, four of these occurred in <i>The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes</i> (CARD, CROO, NAVA, MUSG), with the other (COPP) being the final installment in <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>. What was happening in Arthur Conan Doyle's life at the time he wrote these (c. mid-1892–mid-1893)? </div>

<div>
Was someone in his life under particular duress that caused them to exhibit such symptoms, and that in turn influenced his writing? We're not aware of anyone previously exploring this hypothesis (although we'd be glad to hear if we're wrong).</div>

We've been seeing lots of posts around the internet about Watson's birthday today, and we thought we'd add some perspective here to bring it all together.<br />
<br />
We were tipped off by a post from David Marcum's <a href="https://17stepprogram.blogspot.com/2016/08/happy-164th-birthday-dr-john-h-watson.html?fbclid=IwAR2G88xxR3aS66sQG6y-yncBD3e6Wr0gz9MMDFaNOsNKh6oEH8riMnYBS5s" target="_blank">A Seventeen Step Program</a> blog, from August of 2016. There he did a good job of noting that August 7 was a widely-accepted date, first claimed by William S. Baring-Gould in his groundbreaking biography <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2GSVoIk" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street</a></i>. (However, as Marcum notes, there are no reasons given for that date.)<br />
<br />
Watson's presence was a necessity to Sherlock Holmes. The detective encouraged his participation in their adventures, once remarking, "I am lost without my Boswell."<br />
<br />
And so too would we be.<br />
<br />
For without Watson's stalwart nature and descriptive prose, we'd miss so much about Sherlock Holmes. From his very cases to his moods and activities throughout, Watson's observations of Holmes gave us just about everything we know about the world's first consulting detective.<br />
<br />
Holmes once chided Watson's abilities, saying, "You see but you do not observe," but that's really not the case, is it? After all, Watson's keen observations gave us all of the tone and color of the Canon. He is the heart and soul of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, while Holmes is offstage for the majority of the book.<br />
<br />
When a journalist once called Watson "underdeveloped" and "boring and slow and lifeless," we jumped at the opportunity <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2012/04/friend-and-colleague-dr-watson-nobl_4.html?fbclid=IwAR0PaH79G_HPAXVYUSs4idwWLmiIyGOR8TKJ5ShU1UvIFIcY8k9eVQarRik#.XUskrOhKjb1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">to defend the good doctor</a>. Because he is worthy of our respect and love.<br />
<br />
Edward Hardwicke famously portrayed Watson in the Granada series, and <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2011/05/and-went-out-houn_17.html?fbclid=IwAR3wjTpoRxOxe1I2Btr8g2JkB9eSAv_0zkOChXNnFpcCzrcXovjokX2w8Mg#.XUskv-hKjb0" target="_blank">our remembrance of him</a> spanned visual and audio media.<br />
<br />
Over the course of some 136 episodes of <a href="https://www.sherlockholmespodcast.com/" target="_blank">Trifles</a> (so far), we talked about Watson and various aspects of his life. We've just received notice that the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars</a> (BSI) will be hosting a conference in the summer of 2020.<br />
<br />
The conference is titled <b>Sherlock Holmes and the British Empire</b> and will be held from July 17–19, 2020 at <a href="https://visitbearmountain.com/" target="_blank">Bear Mountain Inn</a> in West Point, New York. More details will be forthcoming, and registration will open in January.<br />
<br />
The BSI is a literary society dedicated to keeping green the memory of Sherlock Holmes. Did you ever have a moment when you were trying to remember the origin of a Sherlock Holmes quote, but you just couldn't quite place it?<br />
<br />
Maybe you remember the quote exactly. Or perhaps just the gist of the quote, but not the exact words. And you go to your favorite source for searching the stories, putting in a variety of search terms, but nothing comes up.<br />
<br />
Then you spend some time trying to recall if you got the quote just right, and where you may have come across it. Was it something Holmes said? Was it an exchange with Watson? Or with a client? Was it uttered in Baker Street, or out at the scene of an investigation?<br />
<br />
Where did I see it? Where did I see it?<br />
<br />
I had one of those moments recently. I wanted to source this (ostensibly) Canonical quote and insert it into some conversation thread on Facebook or Twitter, and in those instances I like to have the story from which the quote is taken.<br />
<br />
The quote in question was was:<br />

"A small occurrence perhaps, but only small I think in a way that a vibrating needle may signal an earthquake."</blockquote>
<br />
But I just couldn't find it.<br />
<br />
I remembered the quote vividly. I searched every iteration of how I seemed to remember it. And still, nothing.<br />
<br />
And then it hit me.<br />
<br />
The quote wasn't from the Canon at all. It was from one of the Granada episodes with Jeremy Brett. It was from the opening scene with Dr. Huxtable coming to after having passed out on the hearth rug. Here's the context:<br />

"In speculating what storm had blown you here, I took the liberty of searching your person, I hope you will forgive me."<br />
"Oh yes, yes of course."<br />
"Your watch. Unblemished for at least thirty years, suddenly this morning scratched—when you thrust those coins, unthinkingly into your waistcoat pocket. The stern habit of a lifetime trampled under foot.<br />
A small occurrence perhaps but own small think in a way that a vibrating needle may signal an earthquake."</blockquote>
It's a testament to the team at Granada that they were able to adapt a scene from the original story, but add their own details and dialog in such away that it fit perfectly with what we would expect to read on the page.<br />
<br />
That was certainly the case with the writing team for BBC Radio when <a href="http://bertcoules.co.uk/">Bert Coules</a> was the head writer for the project that resulted in the entire Sherlock Holmes canon being dramatized for radio. There were instances when the team had to create situations for listeners that were not expressly written out by Watson. The writers had to infer and invent. Bert explains the entire process in <i><a href="http://wessexpress.com/html/221bbc.html">221 BBC: Writing for the World's Only Completely Dramatised Canon and Beyond</a></i>.<br />

<br />
When a writing team is fully invested in the project and has an intimate knowledge of the characters and style of the original material, it's more likely that a new scene or dialog will be just as believable (if not more so!) than the source material.<br />
<br />
It certainly has fooled me more than once. How about you?<br />

Several years ago, I saw author <a href="http://www.petehautman.com/" target="_blank">Pete Hautman</a> speak at a Young Adult Writer's conference in Denver. Hautman explained to the crowd that when he submitted his book <i>How to Steal a Car</i> to his agent, his agent was surprised that Pete had written a young adult novel. The agent explained to the author that it was young adult because it had a fifteen year-old protagonist. Hautman replied that he just wrote a book. He didn't intend for it to be considered "young adult" in nature.<br />
<br />
The same could be said for Jeff Falkingham's excellent <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2le3kvN">Murder in Minnesota!</a></i> a book combining two of his Sherlock Holmes adventures and both with the same narrator, Petey Smith who is 12 years old in the first story and then 22 in the second.  The stories are well researched, capture the local flavor of life in both small towns and cities in late 19th century Minnesota, and are excellent Sherlock Holmes mysteries. For those who don't mind seeing the great detective outside of England, this is a must have collection.<br />
<br />
The first adventure, <i>Sherlock Holmes and the County Courthouse Caper</i>, takes place in 1886 when Holmes helps solve a series of grisly murders in The Minnesota River Valley.  The narrator of this adventure is 12 year old Petey Smith who, along with his family, befriends Holmes.<br />
<br />
Petey makes for a fun narrator, giving us a child's eye view of a complex mystery. Imagine if Wiggins had narrated part of <i>The Sign of the Fou</i>r, and you get an idea of the tone for this book. Falkingham does a particularly good job of blending in historical facts about Minnesota and includes an authentic historic railroad map of Western Minnesota which is important to the story.  Falkingham also has good knowledge of Sherlock Holmes lore. Fans of Baring-Gould's take on Holmes will know why Holmes was in America in 1886.<br />
<br />
I only caution that the murder victims in the book are described in savage detail and may be disturbing for sensitive young readers. I'd give the book a PG-13 rating, definitely okay for teenagers, but may be too intense for tweens.<br />
<br />
<br />
The second adventure, <i>Sherlock Holmes: In Search of the Source</i> takes place ten years after the Courthouse Caper. Petey is still the narrator, but he is older, on the verge of getting married. The mystery of this adventure involves a murder committed at the Schutte building, a boarding house in St. Paul. This story feels much more like a traditional Holmes adventure.<br />
<br />
Petey, at age 22, sounds much more like a young Watson, and the adventure plays out more like a typical Doyle story with grumbling police, a mysterious man following Holmes, and Petey telling the reader of Holmes's incredible skills of deduction. Falkingham also keeps up with blending in his historical facts about Minnesota into the narrative.<br />
<br />
We learn that St. Paul could have been named Pig's Eye if fate had taken a different turn, and much about the beer barons in the St. Paul area. My only complaint with this story is that at times I felt that the historic information got in the way of the narrative and the story was a little padded. That is a minor quibble, and I would still give this adventure five stars.<br />

For those of you who don't mind reading Sherlock Holmes adventures away from the foggy streets of London and sans Watson as narrator, <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2le3kvN">Murder in Minnesota!</a></i> is a book for you. Falkingham is a talented writer, and I hope he writes more Holmes adventures with Petey Smith. After all, there is plenty of time in the twentieth century when Holmes could have returned to Minnesota.<br />
<br />
<i><b>Jeff Falkingham </b>has been a fan of Sherlock Holmes since he first saw Peter Cushing in The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959). The same might be said of the background and style of Henry Ward Beecher. According to Wikipedia,<br />

"Henry Ward Beecher was the son of Lyman Beecher, a Calvinist minister who became one of the best-known evangelists of his era. Several of his brothers and sisters became well-known educators and activists, most notably Harriet Beecher Stowe, who achieved worldwide fame with her abolitionist novel <i>Uncle Tom's Cabin</i>. Henry Ward Beecher graduated from Amherst College in 1834 and Lane Theological Seminary in 1837... He soon acquired fame on the lecture circuit for his novel oratorical style in which he employed humor, dialect, and slang. Given that many evangelical leaders of the time preached fire and brimstone, the Beecher approach must have seemed quite unorthodox. Unorthodox in the way that a certain consulting detective's work was considered.<br />

The opening of "The Cardboard Box" and later repeated in "The Resident Patient," are known to Sherlockians as "the mind-reading incident." Sherlock Holmes observes Dr. Watson for some minutes and in explaining his train of reasoning, describes how Watson stared at the photograph of clergyman and social reformer <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Ward_Beecher" target="_blank">Henry Ward Beecher</a>:<br />

"But now your thoughts went back to Beecher, and you looked hard across as if you were studying the character in his features. Then your eyes ceased to pucker, but you continued to look across, and your face was thoughtful. You were recalling the incidents of Beecher's career. I was well aware that you could not do this without thinking of the mission which he undertook on behalf of the North at the time of the Civil War, for I remember your expressing your passionate indignation at the way in which he was received by the more turbulent of our people."</blockquote>

A modern biography, titled <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2SzNkRg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Henry Ward Beecher: The Most Famous Man in America</a></i>, shows how Beecher was a superstar of his day. He managed to insert himself into many important issues of the day in America: anti-slavery and women's suffrage movements, the rise of the tabloid press and entertainment industry, and controversies from Darwinism to presidential politics.<br />
<br />
So how was it that John H. Watson, M.D., late of the Army Medical Department, held Beecher in such high esteem? Watson was a stalwart defender of honor, and seeing a man ridiculed for his deeply-held beliefs must have irked him.<br />
<br />
Was it the outrage over Beecher's adulterous affair with one of his most devout parishioners that set off the good doctor? Perhaps John "Three Continents" Watson felt a twinge of sympathy for this Lothario.<br />

The gem of Gillette Castle State Park in East Haddam, Connecticut is the quirky and stately Gillette Castle.<br />

The park and its manor house are both named for the original owner of the estate, actor and playwright <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2018/04/remembering-william-gillette.html#.XTnu6OhKjb0">William Gillette</a>. Gillette gained worldwide fame as a portrayer of Sherlock Holmes in his own play by the same name—a play for which he sought Arthur Conan Doyle's permission to take liberties with great detective, as quoted in Vincent Starrett's <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2SDb1Z7">The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</a></i>:<br />

"May I marry Holmes?" Gillette inquired. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Doyle replied with resigned detachment, "You may marry him, or murder him, or do what you like with him."</blockquote>

Gillette Castle is as unique as the man himself. Gillette put in secret doors, special hard-carved locking mechanisms, and surrounded the property with a special narrow-gauge railroad. In recent years, Baker Street Irregulars Tyke ("The Man on the Tor") and Teddie ("Carina") Niver have become William and Helen Gillette, and have welcomed visitors to the Castle. <b>The current situation</b></h2>
A correspondent has informed us that things at the Castle are not quite so rosy any more. In fact, "things are fairly dire up at the Castle. The old stone heap needs repairs and a person to replace Phil Yuris who did his best to keep it from falling down these last years."<br />
<br />
Our correspondent also reminds us:<br />
"It’s 100 years old now, and the Friends [of Gillette Castle] want to give a birthday party for it, Roaring Twenties style, but they need some sponsors."<br />
<br />
"The State of Connecticut doesn’t seem to be exhibiting any great pride in one of its chief theatrical landmarks, as far as chipping in to keep it standing up..."<br />
<br />
Gillette's last will and testament was clear about his fears of the estate being mismanaged:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I would consider it more than unfortunate for me – should I find myself doomed, after death, to a continued consciousness of the behavior of mankind on this planet – to discover that the stone walls and towers and fireplaces of my home… my railway line with its bridges, trestles, and tunnels… my locomotives and cars…that these and many other things of a like nature should reveal themselves to me as in the possession of some <b><i>blithering saphead</i></b> who had no conception of where he is or with what surrounded."</blockquote>
It's hard to think of an industry other than government that is consistently filled with "blithering sapheads," but here we are.<br />

Nils Clausson, to paraphrase the autobiographical blurb on the back of his latest book, is Professor Emeritus at the University of Regina, Canada, specializing in Victorian and early 20th-century British literature, and has written extensively on detective fiction, fin-de-siècle aestheticism, genre theory and many of the authors of that era.<br />
<br />
<i><a href="https://amzn.to/2ljJfnC" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Arthur Conan Doyle’s Art of Fiction: A Revaluation</a></i> is Clausson’s attempt to take Doyle out of the sub-literary category of genre fiction by not reading him through the lens of Foucault, Marx, Derrida, Freud or other literary theorists, which find nothing but faults which cannot explain Doyle’s and Sherlock Holmes’ enduring popularity, but through the lens “of literary criticism, unfashionable as that may be today.”<br />
<br />
Clausson does not cover the whole of Doyle’s oeuvre or life but confines himself “to his best works, those that reveal his art of fiction,” including the Holmes stories. He dissuades the reader of the commonly posited notion that Holmes’ adventures are an optimistic Victorian view of the power of positive science.<br />

"No, the stories do not reflect the power of positivist science. Holmes does. This is the view Holmes takes of himself, frequently endorsed by Watson, who in the first tale, A Study in Scarlet, proclaims that Holmes has ‘brought deduction as near an exact science as it ever will be brought in the world’ (SiS 36). A close reading of the stories reveals that all the science in them, as opposed to scientific posturing, can be written on both sides of one of Holmes’s index cards. Through a bifurcated narrative structure that combines a solvable puzzle with an insoluble mystery, the best Holmes stories critique Holmes’s science of deduction and analysis." (p. xiv)</blockquote>

Clausson demonstrates the puzzle/mystery duality in the first chapter with "The Cardboard Box." The puzzle of who sent Susan Cushing a cardboard box with two human ears by post is quickly solved by Holmes. “The words clear/clearing up and simple occur ten times in the story, eight of them by Holmes,” Clausson points out. But "The Cardboard Box"<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"conforms to a pattern that is repeated again and again not only in the Holmes stories but in Conan Doyle’s gothic tales as well: a manifest mystery, which is rally a puzzle, counterpointed with a latent mystery that Holmes’s much vaunted science of deduction and analysis in incapable of fathoming, and in some stories one that Holmes is not even aware of. The ending of ‘The Cardboard Box’ does not, as might be expected of a conventional detective story, restore equilibrium by securing justice (although the murderer is arrested and will certainly be punished), but rather plunges Holmes and the reader into a new, unexpected state of disequilibrium."  (pp. 35-6)</blockquote>
That mystery is Jim Browner’s confession, whose grizzly crime is committed by a rather sympathetic figure tormented by his crime; a reformed alcoholic, who, along with his wife Mary, is cruelly manipulated by his jealous sister-in-law Sarah. When Browner spurns Sarah’s advances, Sarah guides Mary into an affair with another sailor. Browner breaks his blue ribbon, that is falls off the wagon, and follows the lovers to New Brighton where they rent a boat to paddle out to sea. Browner follows suit. A fog forms and to Browner it seems that Providence has lent a hand in his quest for violent revenge.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"For the victims of this crime are not entirely innocent. In this story, as in the two stories mentioned in it by Holmes, Study in Scarlet and The Sign of the Four, moral (as opposed to strictly legal) guilt is clouded in a ‘haze’ of ambiguity. The contrast between Holmes’s confident use of the world clear—‘nothing could be more clear’—and Browner’s later, twice repeated use of ‘haze’ in his narrative provides a clue for understanding the moral complexity and ambiguity of the story. Guilt is rarely simple in the Holmes stories." (p. 39)</blockquote>

This, then, is the mystery that Holmes fails to solve and that Doyle wants the read to contemplate:<br />

“What is the meaning of it, Watson?” said Holmes, solemnly, as he laid down the paper. “What object is served by this circle of misery and violence and fear? It must tend to some end, or else our universe is ruled by chance, which is unthinkable. But what end? There is the great standing perennial problem to which human reason is as far from an answer as ever.”</blockquote>

In chapter five, Clausson reads BLUE, SIXN, and REDH as “double-coded narratives—at once popular and literary—about the fate of art and the artist in a society of mass-marketed popular fiction of the sort that appeared in the Strand and its competitors.” Sherlockians know that Doyle held the popular Holmes stories in low regard and felt they kept the spotlight away from what he regarded as his serious work. Clausson marshals the evidence that when one looks beyond these adventures as formulaic detective stories and read them within the historical and cultural debates of the popular and literary in fin-de-siècle aestheticism, that Doyle devised an artistically complex and sophisticated form that works within the popular and transcends it.<br />
<br />
<br />
Clausson also shatters those literary critics who only see Holmes as defender of Victorian middle-class values and protector of social order or Doyle as defender of the white privileged British Empire. Many is the time, more so than Clausson actually points out, that Holmes eschews helping the police or lets the criminal go free. <i>The Sign of the Four</i>, instead of holding up West over East values, shows white English Empire defender such as Major Sholto acting less honorably than criminal Small and the Muslim members of the Four; or as in the savagely anti-colonial satire that is <i>The Lost World</i>.<br />

<br />
Clausson reminds us that readers today come to <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> expecting a detective story come away distracted by its twin stories, while reviews at the time had no problem with its structure “Reviews were predominantly favourable.” (p. 53) The detective story was in its nascent form in 1887 and readers had few expectations. Clausson drops genre expectations and reads STUD as Doyle intended it to be read before the form of the Holmes short stories were formulated, as a unified whole. Clausson sees it as Doyle combining genres, the detective story, the crime story and the Gothic tale, with “The Country of the Saints” section a crime story (with a criminal/hero protagonist as Patricia Highsmith might write) and the Gothic tale (specifically Thomas De Quincey’s “The Avenger”). <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"The generic hybridity of Conan Doyle’s novella suggests that its focus is as much on the moral ambiguity of guilt, vengeance and justice as it is on detection. When [STUD] is approached as a hybrid crime-detective story about guilt, justice and revenge, rather than a failed ratiocinative detective story, the double narrative structure ceases to be an artistic flaw and becomes a form integral to its artistic success." (p. 58)</blockquote>
The second half is a revenge tragedy with Jefferson Hope a hero who must exact justice for John Ferrier and his adopted daughter Lucy when the law cannot, as in corrupt (and wholly fictional) Utah past or an out-of-jurisdiction London present. The novella contrasts the obsessed Hope who believes in the justness of his cause (Providence guides the hand of the guilty in choosing the correct pill in his trial-by-poison) and Holmes’ obsession in the intellectual puzzle solving through science and analysis. Again, the duality of the mystery/puzzle presented in the two halves shows Holmes easily solving the puzzle of who killed the visiting Mormons but not the why of how the crimes came to be. <br />
<br />
In fact, the events of  “The Country of the Saints” section is unknown to Holmes and Watson, and Holmes show a distinct  disinterest in finding it out, leaving the reader with more knowledge than Holmes and able to judge the scope of events in a way that calls into question Holmes’ reliance on science. Both SIGN and HOUN in their individual chapters benefit from Clausson’s close reading.<br />
<br />
<br />
Many of Clausson’s chapters were published earlier in slight different form in various journals and tighter editing would have help in making the necessary repetitions between chapters less <i>repetitious</i>. It may also have caught the errors of calling Jim Browner <i>John</i> Browner, attributing a piece of writing to <i>Holmes</i> instead of Doyle, or in comparing "The Noble Bachelor" with "The Man with the Twisted Lip," referring to Lady St. Simon as Lady St. <i>Clair</i>.  Worse there are dozens of typographical errors, from having “Lustrade” and “Lestrade” uncaught mere words away from each other to missing open or close quotes or missing open or close parentheses or the occasional missing period. Even titles such as <i>A Life in Letters</i> and "Lot No. 249" are <i>A Life in Letter</i> and "Lost No. 249." I'm not sure what happened to the scholars at Cambridge Scholars, but for <a href="https://amzn.to/2ljJfnC" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">$72.11 at Amazon</a>, I expect more academic rigor and do not want to be part of the crowdsourcing of a corrected second edition.<br />

Clausson sums up Chapter One “The Conan Doyle Problem” this way:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Most readers evince the same predictable response to the Holmes stories as to detective stories generally: they know what they are going to find in them and so they never fail to find it. If, however, we read ‘The Cardboard Box’—and the rest of Conan Doyle’s fiction—alert to signs of formal artistry, moral ambiguity, and intellectual depth, then we will have no more difficulty finding these qualities in it than we do in, say, James Joyce’s Dubliners (even if we still think Joyce is the better fiction writer). It can be debated just how good Conan Doyle is, but I see no way that any discriminating and discerning critic cannot but conclude he is more than a teller of tales, a master of genre fiction….The fact that the Holmes stories are still read by legions of appreciative readers and that even new historicists and cultural materialists write about them, rather than the deservedly forgotten stories featuring the rivals of Sherlock Holmes (as several out-of-print collections dub them), suggests that Conan Doyle’s stories may in fact possess some value beyond providing recreational diversion to casual readers or documentary evidence for cultural historians. Despite the ‘death of the author,’ Conan Doyle still, it would seem, has more cachet than Jacques Futrelle. The obvious reason is that whereas the author of ‘The Problem of Cell 13’ gives us nothing but the clever solution to a manufactured puzzle, Conan Doyle gives us works of art." (p. 49)</blockquote>

This is how I’ve seen Doyle, first intuitively for many years (Doyle is good, but, really, more than good) but gradually coming to the conscious realization that Doyle is a great writer. I’m sure I’m not alone; that many Sherlockians have felt various versions of that thought. </div>

It’s nice to have Clausson confirm my thoughts and lay out the evidence for Doyle’s rescue from “popular author” in the sub-literary basement to his place in in the canon of English Literature. More, Canonical Sherlockians and Doyleans will find much to mull over and digest in this very readable (aside from its many typos) work.<br />

This maybe old news to some but I caught the video to Billie Eilish's song "You  Should See Me In A Crown" on Friday, June 7, and the lyrics and video imagery seemed partially  inspired by BBC <i>Sherlock's</i> "Reichenbach Fall" episode. Sure enough, in the time it takes to type "billie eilish you should see me in a crown bbc sherlock" into Google and read <a href="https://genius.com/a/billie-eilish-s-new-single-you-should-see-me-in-a-crown-is-inspired-by-an-episode-of-bbc-s-sherlock">the first item listed</a>, my hunch was confirmed.<br />
<br />
Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell was born on December 18, 2001. Home schooled by parents who work in the entertainment industry. She told <a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/billie-eilish-pops-next-it-girl">Vogue</a>:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I’ve been in the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus since I was 8. And my  brother [Finneas O'Connell, born July 30, 1997] has as well. That’s where I’ve gotten all my singing technique,  even though it’s mostly choral stuff. It’s helped me learn the proper  way to sing and not ruin my voice completely. But I’ve just always sung,  all the time. I sang so much that my family had to shush me. Then I  started writing when I was about 11." </blockquote>

Finneas writes songs, has his own band and acts. He's been on <i>Modern Family</i> and <i>Glee</i>, to name two. Billie and Finneas also work together on Billie's career (an older generation might think of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTaWayUE5XA">Karen and Richard Carpenter</a>) when Billie's home-studio recording of Finneas' "Ocean Eyes" became a SoundCloud hit in 2016 and reached 84 on Billboard's Hot 100 in May, 2019.<br />

Billie and Finneas were watching BBC <i>Sherlock's</i> "Reichenbach Fall" when, <a href="https://genius.com/a/billie-eilish-s-new-single-you-should-see-me-in-a-crown-is-inspired-by-an-episode-of-bbc-s-sherlock">says Billie</a>,<br />

As a rule, Sherlockians and Holmesians are a welcoming bunch. But occasionally you'll see arguments spring up about why a certain book, film, television show, play, or other related project is rubbish. Well, that's completely subjective, isn't it?<br />

The guiding light of the Sherlockian movement since its earliest days is rooted in having fun. And who is one person to tell another person how they can have fun? Such is the motivating factor behind <b>Doyle's Rotary Coffin</b>, a concept of Paul Thomas Miller.<br />
<br />
Paul joined us to discuss his quest to acknowledge that anyone's Holmes has something to offer. And to preview his upcoming project: a chronology of the Sherlock Holmes stories titled <i><b>Watson Does Not Lie</b></i> (available soon from Wildside Press). Paul set out to create a chronology that didn't rely on excuses like Watson's poor handwriting, a slip of the memory, or outright fabrications. And he's created quite a convincing argument.<br />

If you mention whaling to any student of the Sherlock Holmes stories, they'll easily point out the story "The Adventure of Black Peter," which concerned a former whaling captain who was found dead in his shack with a steel harpoon driven right through his chest to the wall, where he was "pinned like a beetle on a card." This of course follows Holmes's return to Baker Street with "a huge barbed-headed spear tucked like an umbrella under his arm."<br />
<br />
Whaling is an odd choice of profession for a victim in a Sherlock Holmes story. Where did the inspiration come from? In fact, Conan Doyle had some first-hand experience with whaling.<br />
