And there are really three levels of identification: 1) inability to definitively locate a building or setting; 2) ability to take Watson's clues and descriptions and use Holmes's own methods to make an identification; and 3) a flat-out undeniable real place.<br /> <br /> For example, the exact location of 221B Baker Street has been disputed for years, made even more difficult by the destruction of pre-World War II buildings. It falls into the first category.<br /> <br /> The second category would include places like Camford (in "The Creeping Man"), or <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2018/01/the-real-house-that-inspired-birlstone.html">Groombridge Place</a>, the house that was correctly identified as Birlstone Manor from <i>The Valley of Fear</i>. James Montgomery, BSI ("The Red Circle") managed to correctly identify the setting, years after H.W. Bell, BSI ("<i>The Valley of Fear</i>") had submitted what was thought to be the correct identity.<br /> <br /> The third category is what gives the Canon its realism. It's one of the reasons that "the Game" makes sense: because Sherlock Holmes was thrust believably into our world. He lived in our city. He walked our streets.<br /> <br /> So when we read of a location where we can say, "Hey, I know that place!" (or more appropriately, as Watson noted when Holmes described Sussex: "I know that country, Holmes." [SUSS]), we get an even greater sense of satisfaction and of connection with the stories. Examples might include the Reichenbach Falls, Waterloo Station, or the Simpsons – places we can still visit today.<br /> <br /> So upon reading about the Splügen Pass in "<a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/illu.htm">The Illustrious Client</a>," that's enough to send one to the <i>Encyclopedia Sherlockiana</i> or Wikipedia:<br /> <blockquote> "I am as sure that he killed his wife when the so-called ‘accident’ happened in the Splügen Pass as if I had seen him do it."</blockquote> That passage of course refers to Baron Adelbert Gruner. you've ever wondered about the Splügen Pass, here's your opportunity to learn a little more.<br /> <br /> The Splügen Pass is a high mountain pass that marks the border between Italy and Switzerland. At its highest, it stands 6,945 feet (2,115 meters) and is recognized as the separation of the Western and Eastern Alps.<br /> <br /> The pass was already in use in the Roman era, and from 1818 to 1823 the modern road was built at the behest of the Austrian authorities. In 1840, author Mary Shelley traveled through the pass on the way to Lake Como with her son. She describes the pass in her travel narrative, <i>Rambles in Germany and Italy</i>, published in 1844:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "A few years ago, there was no path except across this mountain, which being very exposed, and difficult even to danger, the Splügen was only traversed by shepherds and travellers of the country on mules or on foot. But now, a new and most marvellous road has been constructed - the mountain in question is, to the extent of several miles, cleft from the summit to the base, and a sheer precipice of 4,000 feet rises on either side. The Rhine, swift and strong, but in width a span, flows in the narrow depth below. The road has been constructed on the face of the precipice, now cut into the side, now perforated through the living rock into galleries: it passes, at intervals, from one side of the ravine to the other, and bridges of a single arch span the chasm. The precipices, indeed approach so near, in parts, that a fallen tree could not reach the river below, but lay wedged in mid-way. It may be imagined how singular and sublime this pass is, in its naked simplicity. After proceeding about a mile, you look back and see the country you had left, through the narrow opening of the gigantic crags, set like a painting in this cloud-reaching frame. It is giddy work to look down over the parapet that protects the road, and mark the arrowy rushing of the imprisoned river. Mid-way in the pass, the precipices approach so near that you might fancy that a strong man could leap across."</blockquote> Sounds like the perfect place for an individual like Baron Adelbert Gruner to send his wife to her death.<br /> <br /> A few years ago, the forum for Italy Magazine had <a href="http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/do-see/5838-splugen-pass.html">a thread on the Splügen Pass</a>, that territory between Italy and Switzerland. It's clear that over the years, the region has retained its 'sinister air':<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "What a grim seeming place!! We never saw a single human there nor all the way down to Chiavenna. The road twists and turns thro' innumerable tunnels with many hairpin bends inside the tunnels and water dripping everywhere and the sound of falling stones."</blockquote> Should you chance to pass through the Splügen Pass, take care. However, these pastiches have used Moriarity to varying effect, portraying him as either criminal supergenius or merely serviceable villain.<br /> <br /> But <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Moriartys-Final-Problem-Sherlock-Holmes-ebook/dp/B01ILYLF32">Moriarity’s Final Problem</a></i> by Lisa and Gina Gomez (published by 18th Wall Productions as part of their “<b>Sherlock Holmes: The Science of Deduction</b>” ebook series) manages a feat many pastiches rarely attempt: a focus on Moriarity’s activities after the events of "The Final Problem" and an exceptional insight into his motivations and psyche. <br /> <br /> Unlike other efforts by John Gardner and Anthony Horowitz, <i>Moriarity’s Final Problem</i> has a very distinct focus: Moriarity’s plans for revenge against Holmes in the most cunning and devious manner…<br /> <br /> One of the great aspects of <i>Moriarity’s Final Problem</i> is how the plot unfolds while revealing Moriarity’s mindset: this is not simply a case of I’m-going-to-get-you. In many ways, this feels as dramatic a turnaround as Holmes return in "The Empty House," but what makes this story especially clever is the how Moriarity chooses to exact his revenge on Holmes.<br /> <br /> To say more would spoil the surprises: suffice it to say, Lisa and Gina Gomez manage to portray Moriarity in a manner that Conan Doyle would approve. Balancing a Machiavellian sense of intrigue with a stark anger, their Moriarity provides an extremely compelling read.<br /> <div> <br /></div> <div> There is a strong sense of inevitability about the ending, but the authors manage a strong sense of suspense as they tell their tale. The only complaint about <i>Moriarity’s Final Problem</i> is that it feels a bit short, but not because of a lack of story. Baker Street Elementary – Nothing New

But interestingly, she also added, "I often take advantage of the freedom which it gives."<br /> <br /> Irene Adler came from a theatrical background, having retired from the stage. So she must have seen her fair share of men dressed as women, in the Shakespearean tradition, where men played female roles for the first few hundred years of performances. But what about the other way around – women taking on male roles? It would seem almost unheard of in Victorian times.<br /> <br /> Or would it?<br /> <br /> <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_Terry">Ellen Terry</a>, a leading Shakespearean actress in the late Victorian / early Edwardian period, wrote that a debt was owed to Shakespeare "for his vindication of women in [his] fearless, high-spirited, resolute and intelligent heroines." Terry should know. as she played the cross-dressing Portia in <i>The Merchant of Venice</i> as early as 1875. And let's not forget the legendary Sarah Bernhardt, who played the title role in <i>Hamlet </i>in 1899.<br /> <br /> Similarly, the boys at Baker Street Elementary decide it's time to broaden their theatrical casting...<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; Brooks</a> between 1927 and 1958. There was a time when ten-year-olds stormed public libraries every Saturday morning looking for the Freddy books, and they're now considered excellent reading-aloud material. The Friends of Freddy are mostly of an age to remember reading the books when we were children, and seek to promote them to new generations.<br /><br />I found myself on the convention's program to give a half-hour talk under the title "Two Great Detectives: Freddy and Sherlock Holmes." Mostly I was sharing a few thoughts about one of the 26 books, <i>Freddy the Detective</i>, which I consider to be the best of the series. I'm not sure, after all these years, whether I first liked Detective because of my enthusiasm for Sherlock Holmes, or whether I got interested in Sherlock Holmes because of Detective.<br /><br />As the story begins, Freddy the pig is shadowing his fellow animals on the Bean farm. "I got the idea," he says, "from a book I found in the barn, <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>. It's the best book I've come across in a long time, and you'll admit I know something about literature."<br /><br />He finds himself working to solve a real mystery when the toy train belonging to the human boy and girl on the farm disappears. He unearths clues, including green paint scratches and grey hairs, and eventually brings the crime home to the perpetrators, old Simon the rat (Freddy's Moriarty) and his criminous family. It takes a while, though: "Even Sherlock Holmes couldn't do everything in a minute," Freddy tells Jinx defensively. There are, of course, complications and subplots, including the appearance of a "city detective," provocatively named Montague Boner.<br /><br /><i>Freddy the Detective</i> was published by Knopf in 1932. It was the third book in the Freddy series, but the first to set what became a pattern in the ensuing two decades with <i>Freddy the Magician</i>, <i>Freddy Goes Camping</i>, <i>Freddy the Pilot</i>, and so on. There have been a number of subsequent editions of Detective, and it is now <a href="http://www.overlookpress.com/freddy-the-detective.html">in print from Overlook Press</a>.<br /><br />As I did a little research to prepare my talk for the Friends of Freddy, I realized that Detective's appearance in 1932 was no coincidence. The death of Arthur Conan Doyle in 1930 had led to publication of Doubleday's two-volum<i>e </i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Sherlock-Holmes-Fifty-Six-Adventures/dp/B000N770O4"><i>The Complete Sherlock Holmes</i></a> and a burst of new interest in Sherlock Holmes. William Gillette was winding up his final "farewell tour" as Holmes, which had begun in 1929. <i><a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/01/sherlock-holmes-and-sleeping-cardinal.html">Sherlock Holmes' Fatal Hour</a></i>, starring Arthur Wontner, had been released in 1931, and <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Speckled_Band_(1931_film)">The Speckled Band</a> </i>with Raymond Massey followed. In Britain, three books of general Holmesiana had appeared by 1932, including T. S. Blakeney's immortal <i>Sherlock Holmes: Fact or Fiction?</i> <br /><br />In fact, 1932 was the peak of the third "Sherlock Holmes boom", after 1892 and 1902, and in that context, it's no real surprise that Brooks seized on a prominent figure in popular culture to give his pig book extra appeal. It is by no means a traditional pastiche, but it can easily be classified under the umbrella of fanfiction — Farmlock?<br /><br />As for Walter R. Brooks, he continued writing until his death in 1958: not just the Freddy books, but scores of short stories for the adult market, published in the <i>Saturday Evening Post</i> and many other magazines, as well as one novel, <i>Ernestine Takes Over</i>. His best-known legacy, apart from Freddy, is the talking horse Mister Ed, the central character in a dozen short stories that led to a television comedy series in the 1960s. <br /><br />--<div> <br /><br /></div>

Did he even have a sense of humor? It wasn't until "The Priory School" (the 31st story, part of <i>The Return of Sherlock Holmes</i>) that we read about Holmes's "admirable good humour."<br /> <br /> Not long afterward in "Black Peter" we see “Well, well,” said Holmes, good-humouredly. “We all learn by experience.” Similarly in "The Three Students," Sherlock Holmes had been performing some research on early English charters when he was interrupted by Hilton Soames with a a problem, and Holmes didn't want distractions. But soon, Watson wrote that Holmes "was recovering his good-humour as his attention became more engrossed by the case." Both stories were in <i>The Return</i>.<br /> <br /> Of course, the most frequently cited and widely recognized turn of phrase regarding humor is in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>, in which Holmes comments on Watson's little joke:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> “A touch! A distinct touch!” cried Holmes. “You are developing a certain unexpected vein of pawky humour, Watson, against which I must learn to guard myself.”</blockquote> If we can infer Sherlock Holmes's sense of humor by his physical reactions – that is, his smiles, chuckles and laughter – there are opportunities to do that. As early as <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> and "A Scandal in Bohemia," we have the simple phrase "Holmes laughed." Soon afterword we find "Holmes laughed softly to himself," [BOSC] and again "Holmes laughed" [BLUE].<br /> <br /> In other instances, Holmes laughed "heartily" [REIG], "good-naturedly" [PRIO], and "good-humoredly" [WIST]. And he seemed to chuckle quite a bit as well, including "heartily" [SPEC] and while "rubbing his hands" [SOLI, VALL].<br /> <br /> There are also numerous instances of Holmes smiling; Steven Rothman ("<i>The Valley of Fear</i>") <a href="https://twitter.com/search?l=&q=%23NationalSmileDay%20from%3ABakerStJournal&src=typd">compiled a few examples</a> of that on the <a href="http://twitter.com/bakerstjournal">@BakerStJournal</a> Twitter account on National Smile Day. The legendary Hollywood entertainer's career spanned vaudeville, radio, television, and film, and he was noted for his uncanny timing.<br /> <br /> Part of the attraction of Jack Benny's persona was that he was always being upstaged by his co-stars Mary Livingstone (his real-life wife), his butler Rochester, his orchestra leader Phil Harris, his announcer Don Wilson, and even his violin teacher, Professor Le Blanc (played by Mel "Man of a Thousand Voices" Blanc). Jack was supposed to be a cheapskate who didn't know the first thing about anything.<br /> <br /> All of this was even funnier because in real life, Jack was one of the most generous people in Hollywood who knew everything about comedy there was to know (and quite a bit about music). A raised eyebrow or a slight turn of the head with a deadpan look at the audience could turn everything upside down.<br /> <br /> So imagine when Jack and his ensemble were able to stage <a href="https://youtu.be/rhf_soW72eE?t=8m43s">their own version of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i></a> as Jack was planning to return to his hometown of Waukegan, IL. This show was originally broadcast on June 11, 1939 - just two and a half months after Twentieth Century Fox released the Basil Rathbone / Nigel Bruce version of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i> on March 31, 1939.<br /> <br /> Check out the Benny Two Tickets for the Price of One players in this very different tale. Sherlockians, of course, have another reason to remember her.<br /> <br /> A trained singer and dancer for the stage, Ms. Morison made her Broadway debut in 1933, and was an understudy for Helen Hayes in "Victoria Regina" in 1935. Hayes, of course, was very close with <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose34">William Gillette</a>. She signed a contract with Paramount Pictures in 1938 and moved to Hollywood, which only lasted about a decade before she returned to the stage.<br /> <br /> But while she was there, she appeared as the femme fatale in <i><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038494/?ref_=nv_sr_2">Dressed To Kill</a></i> with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, the last of the 14 films that the duo made together. The good doctor noted some of the peculiarities of his friend and fellow lodger Mr. Sherlock Holmes, and he put together that helpful list that has defined what Sherlock Holmes was capable of.<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> <h4> <i>Sherlock Holmes—his limits</i>.</h4> <ol> <li>Knowledge of Literature.—Nil.</li> <li>Philosophy.—Nil.</li> <li>Astronomy.—Nil.</li> <li>Politics.—Feeble.</li> <li>Botany.—Variable. Well up in belladonna, opium, and poisons generally. Knows nothing of practical gardening.</li> <li>Geology.—Practical, but limited. Tells at a glance different soils from each other. After walks has shown me splashes upon his trousers, and told me by their colour and consistence in what part of London he had received them.</li> <li>Chemistry.—Profound.</li> <li>Anatomy.—Accurate, but unsystematic.</li> <li>Sensational Literature.—Immense. He appears to know every detail of every horror perpetrated in the century.</li> <li>Plays the violin well.</li> <li>Is an expert singlestick player, boxer, and swordsman.</li> <li>Has a good practical knowledge of British law.</li> </ol> </blockquote> <br /> As an aside, isn't it interesting that Sherlockians somehow always come back to that famous list when analyzing Sherlock Holmes? As if that snapshot of life at Baker Street dictates how the Great Detective would forever exist, frozen in amber.<br /> <br /> But we know for certain that such is not the case. Holmes became quite philosophical in his 'rose soliloquy' in "The Naval Treaty":<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> “There is nothing in which deduction is so necessary as in religion,” said he, leaning with his back against the shutters. “It can be built up as an exact science by the reasoner. Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers our desires, our food, are all really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and its color are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from the flowers.”</blockquote> <br /> Watson himself was taken aback, but ascribed it more as naturalism than philosophy, noting that it was "a new phase of his character to me, for I had never before seen him show any keen interest in natural objects."<br /> <br /> Over the years, though, Holmes clearly became quite reflective. In the Preface to <i>His Last Bow</i>, Watson fills in the gaps from decades of their acquaintance:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "He has, for many years, lived in a small farm upon the downs five miles from Eastbourne, where his time is divided <b>between philosophy and agriculture</b>."</blockquote> <br /> So, once again it's that confluence of nature and philosophy we witnessed in "The Naval Treaty." Where did Holmes get it from.
