Those who have been around our site for some time know that we have a show on which we interview notable Sherlockians. It's called I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere (go figure!) and it's like <i><a href="https://www.npr.org/programs/fresh-air/" target="_blank">Fresh Air</a></i> for Sherlock Holmes fans.<br />

We release two interview episodes each month, on the 15th and 30th, and since our <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose01" target="_blank">very first episode</a> in June 2007, we've made it available on traditional podcast outlets. This initially included only <a href="http://bit.ly/ihearofsherlock" target="_blank">iTunes</a>, but over the years has expanded to pretty much wherever you can get podcasts, namely: <a href="https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cDovL2loZWFyb2ZzaGVybG9jay5saWJzeW4uY29tL3Jzcw%3D%3D">Google Podcasts</a>, <a href="https://play.radiopublic.com/i-hear-of-sherlock-everywhere-WRjkZW">RadioPublic</a>, <a href="https://soundcloud.com/ihearofsherlock">Soundcloud</a>, <a href="http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/i-hear-of-sherlock-everywhere?refid=stpr">Stitcher</a>, <a href="https://www.iheart.com/podcast/263-I-Hear-of-Sherlock-Everywh-27577121/">iHeartRadio</a> and <a href="http://www.spreaker.com/user/ihearofsherlock">Spreaker</a>.<br />

Today we're pleased to share that I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere is now available on <a href="https://open.spotify.com/show/30WtRn1mnXfAtX7YaeRY5Y?si=0z1oIxvsT8-FZUhLFoYFmg" target="_blank">Spotify</a>.<br />

Previously, we were prevented from being on this platform because our show didn't air frequently enough. The guidelines indicated that shows needed to daily or weekly to be considered for Spotify. Which meant that our other show, <a href="https://open.spotify.com/show/6SF8y5sXSfWPBnH2W7WmKc?si=bg7M8Xb2TGW6VR5aeWwowQ" target="_blank">Trifles</a>, a weekly discussion of elements in the Sherlock Holmes stories, was immediately accepted.<br />

Over the course of the holiday season, some watchers on Facebook may have seen images of an I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere mug pop up from time to time.<br />

These were gifts from the creators of the show to our patrons from 2018 who supported the show to a certain level throughout the year.<br />

We've long wanted to offer transcriptions, but the technology that provided them was immature, too expensive, or the post-transcription editing process required too much time. As the monetary support for the show has grown, we've taken the leap—despite being short on funds—to have each show transcribed (more on that in a moment).</div>

We have a number of followers who have hearing issues, and they expressed an interest in the show, but also voiced their frustration in not being able to follow along with a transcription. So we made it our priority to find the right vendor and get this done.</div>

We pay per minute of show, so we need to account for the expense of transcribing them—particularly the longer ones. We have <a href="http://patreon.com/ihearofsherlock">Patreon</a> and <a href="http://paypal.me/ihose">PayPal</a> set up to make it possible to accept funds.</div>

Patreon works like an ongoing support plan—much like monthly NPR or PBS support works. We simply charge patrons per show that we produce; if you don't produce a show, patrons aren't charged. We need to reach the <b>$100 per episode</b> level to make transcriptions affordable. We're currently $33 per episode short of that goal.</div>

Over the course of a dozen years, things can fly by when we're busy. On the other hand, time seems to come to a standstill when we're waiting for something. This seems to be the case between our recording sessions and the releases of our episodes.<br />

Somehow, another year has managed to slip past us seemingly in the blink of an eye. Current geopolitical rumblings, from Brexit to the U.S. presidential election may have left the world in tumult, but here in the world of Sherlock Holmes, things remain constant. In the words of Vincent Starrett, BSI ("<i>A Study in Scarlet</i>") in his storied poem "<a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/10/celebrate-national-poetry-day.html#.WGdkovkrLb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">221B</a>,"<br />

Here, though the world explode, these two survive,</h3>

And it is always eighteen ninety-five.</h3>

At I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere, we had another successful year, thanks in no small part to our contributors and to you, our readers. We thought we would take a look at just what made up that success, by breaking things down into a few different categories.<br />

By the Numbers</h3>

It's always difficult to take the passion and emotion behind a hobby and convert it into numbers, but numbers are data points and when viewed properly, data can tell a story. After all, Sherlock Holmes himself said "Data! data! data! I can't make bricks without clay," in "The Copper Beeches." So let's have a look.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>1,244:</b> The number of posts that have been published on IHOSE since our inception in 2005.</li>
<li><b>142:</b>  In terms of the number of posts we published, 2016 will place a very respectable third, with 142 entries for the year. Only 2007 and 2015 had more, with 160 and 199 entries, respectively.</li>
<li><b>45%:</b> Our contributors (more about them below) accounted for 45 percent of those 142 entries on the site.</li>
<li><b>19:</b> We had occasion to be in Sydney, NSW, Australia in late April, marking 19 years since we had last visited. As any such visit should include, we connected with <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose97" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Sydney Passengers</a>.</li>
<li><b>24:</b> The number of new episodes of the IHOSE podcast, published the 15th and the 30th of every month.</li>
<li><b>8:</b> We published eight "terraces," or obituaries in 2016. While a number of members of the BSI passed away again this year, most of the terraces we published were celebrities, an editorial decision on our part, to avoid making the site too morbid.</li>
<li><b>5:</b> We counted five sponsors to the show this year, from our faithful two, <a href="http://wessexpress.com/" target="_blank">Wessex Press</a> and <i><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/" target="_blank">The Baker Street Journal</a></i>, to newcomers the <a href="http://johnhwatsonsociety.com/" target="_blank">John H. Watson Society</a>, Paula Berinstein's <a href="http://amandalester.net/" target="_blank">Amanda Lester series</a>, and <a href="http://bakerstreetbeat.blogspot.com/p/dans-books.html" target="_blank">Dan Andriacco</a>.</li>
<li><b>4:</b> We were asked by MASTERPIECE to host the #SherlockPBS live tweet for a fourth time, for the premiere of <i>Sherlock: The Abominable Bride</i> in January. We'll reprise that role <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/12/join-us-as-we-live-tweet-sherlock.html#.WGdzVvkrLb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">for a fifth time tomorrow night with Series 4</a>.</li>

This was the first full year of the new show schedule, which we revamped in October 2015. The clockwork-like release of our podcast episodes on the 15th and 30th of every month, alternating one interview and one commentary show, mean predictability for our listeners. It also means stretching for topics for those commentary shows and scrambling to record, edit and post episodes when work, travel or family commitments are looming over us.<br />

Passings</h3>

In the wider world, a number of celebrity deaths made 2016 seem like a particularly cruel year. Partially because some of them were icons in their industries, like David Bowie or Alan Rickman; and partially because some of them were particularly young, like George Michael (53), Prince (57), Carrie Fisher (60). And the tragic two day span in which both Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds died left an indelible mark in 2016.<br />
<br />
In the Sherlockian world, we felt the impact as well:<br />

<li><a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/01/remembering-alan-rickman.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Alan Rickman</a>: this one took many people by surprise, and occurred during the BSI Weekend, leaving us scrambling to cover it.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/02/remembering-frank-finlay.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Frank Finlay</a>: occupying non-consecutive decades of Sherlock Holmes association, Finlay was a staunch performer.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/03/remembering-douglas-wilmer-bsi.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Douglas Wilmer</a>: not only did Douglas Wilmer portray Sherlock Holmes on film, television and audio books, but he was also a member of the BSI. And your editor hosted him in Boston.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/08/remembering-gene-wilder.html" target="_blank">Gene Wilder</a>: another surprise to many, Wilder was fondly remembered for his manic peformances, of which <i>Sherlock Holmes's Smarter Brother</i> was an underrated one.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/11/remembering-fritz-weaver.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Fritz Weaver</a>: we were fortunate to have interviewed Weaver on Episode 26 of our program. He was a delight.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/12/remembering-andrew-sachs.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Andrew Sachs</a>: following in Michael Williams' footsteps on the BBC radio series with Clive Merrison would have been daunting for any actor. Sachs was not only up to the task, but he gave a solid and believable performance.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/12/remembering-peter-vaughan.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Peter Vaughan</a>: more widely recognized of late because of his Game of Thrones role, we can say, "we knew him when..."</li>

Meanwhile, what will the future hold for IHOSE? It may not be all that far away, actually. As Bill Watterson wrote, "The problem with the future is that it keeps turning into the present." We'll continue to cover the news of the Sherlockian world and its intersections with popular culture, as we've been doing for a decade. We'd like to make it easier for Sherlockians everywhere to discover events near them, and we're working on a solution for that.<br />

It can be difficult to keep up with all of the goings-on of Sherlock Holmes online. As 2015 draws to a close, we have much to be thankful for. It's been a banner year here at I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere, thanks in no small part to our growing community of contributors, readers and listeners.<br />

As such, we thought it might be a decent time to reflect on how far we've come and share that progress with you. And rather than take you through the calendar year, we thought we'd divide things up into categories, because that makes for more interesting reading.<br />

While it may seem trifling and silly to sum up the team's considerable efforts with a few figures, we thought it might help put things in perspective. You see, when the causal reader sees an email here, a tweet there, a Facebook update there, it's a piece of content that's simply passing by. We don't have the advantage of sitting on a shelf like so many issues of <i><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/" target="_blank">The Baker Street Journal</a></i>, so the cumulated IHOSE works may not seem as impressive. But we assure you, they are.<br />
<ul>
<li><b>1,000:</b> we reached a milestone of 1,000 entries <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose1000" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">on June 4, 2015</a> (<a href="http://ihose.co/ihose1000" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">ihose.co/ihose1000</a>) and took some time to reflect on what we accomplished.</li>
<li><b>199:</b> entries we posted in 2015. This is our highest ever — the previous being 160 entries in 2007.</li>
<li><b>44%:</b> the percent of those 199 entries that were written by contributors to the site (more on our contributors below).</li>
<li><b>17:</b> contributors who added their own unique stamp on IHOSE content this year.</li>
<li><b>15:</b> podcast episodes of our audio program, which changed format toward the end of the year. We're now up to 87 episodes since we launched the show in 2007.</li>
<li><b>11:</b> terraces on which we stood for those who passed beyond the Reichenbach this year, although there were many more we chose not to publish because of editorial priorities.</li>
<li><b>10:</b> years since we began this little experiment. We purchased the ihose.co domain this year, which we've been using for link shortening through the Bitly service. The convention with our podcast is ihose.co/ihose[shownumber], such as <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose85">ihose.co/ihose85</a> for Episode 85. Similarly, we've used other abbreviations for frequently referenced links, such as <a href="http://ihose.co/flipsherlock">ihose.co/flipsherlock</a> for our Flipboard magazine or <a href="http://ihose.co/221Bstickers">ihose.co/221Bstickers</a> for our oval stickers. A significant change we elected to make was to increase the frequency of the show. Because of the number of topics and interview guests we'd like to cover and interact with, it made more sense. So rather than one show a month, we're now producing two shows a month — one on the 15th and one on the 30th — that alternate between interviews and commentary between Burt and Scott.<br />

One thing that we added specifically for the listeners of our show is an option to support us on a regular basis through <a href="http://patreon.com/ihearosherlock" target="_blank">Patreon</a>. There were a handful of articles on our site that popped this year, either because we broke news, had an exclusive, or simply got lucky in our efforts.<br />

Following our <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/10/breaking-long-lost-william-gillette.html#.VoTnXRUrLb1" target="_blank">breaking news item in 2014</a> about he discovery of the lost 1916 Sherlock Holmes starring William Gillette, we were given <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/07/exclusive-video-trailer-to-william.html" target="_blank">an exclusive opportunity to run the trailer for the DVD released this year</a> by Flicker Alley, who also chose to run a giveaway with us.<br />
<br />
The second largest item for our site was <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/11/bombshell-interview-with-author-mitch.html" target="_blank">an interview that Derrick Belanger conducted with Mitch Cullin</a> following the legal settlement with the Conan Doyle Estate (for more, see below). Cullin was quite candid in his assessment of the situation, to say the least.<br />

But the single article that got us the most coverage — including international newspapers and the front page of Reddit — was <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/02/conan-doyle-didnt-write-lost-sherlock.html" target="_blank">Mattias Bostrom's article about the lost Sherlock Holmes story found in Scotland</a>. It afforded us an opportunity to follow up with celebrated author <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/02/interview-author-lyndsay-faye-on-art-of.html" target="_blank">Lyndsay Faye, BSI ("Kitty Winter") on what makes a successful pastiche</a> and for <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/02/a-stylistic-analysis-of-lost-sherlock.html" target="_blank">Vincent Wright to provide a styistic analysis</a>, before <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/03/the-final-word-on-lost-sherlock-holmes.html#.VoTprxUrLb0" target="_blank">Mattias had a final word</a>.<br />

As you know, there are many Sherlockian events happening around the world. These include regular society meetings, of course, but also screenings, exhibitions and more. We fanned out this year to cover some of them and asked our correspondents to serve as Holmes asked of the Irregulars: to "go everywhere, see everything, overhear everyone." [SIGN]<br />

We began the year with <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/01/your-bsiweekend-coverage.html#.VoTdrxUrLb0" target="_blank">coverage of the 2015 BSI Weekend</a>, including a multimedia summary of photos, tweets and other updates from a wide variety of attendees. The spring gave way to the premiere of the long-lost 1916 silent film <i>Sherlock Holmes</i> starring William Gillette and <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/06/sherlock-holmes-in-san-francisco.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Tim Greer was on the ground in San Francisco</a> to cover the event. Shortly thereafter, Crystal Noll was our intrepid reporter at <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/06/mr-holmes-first-review.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">a press conference and screening of <i>Mr. Holmes</i></a> in London.<br />

But there were a couple of items that stood out that we weighed in on this year. Those included the <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/05/conan-doyle-estate-sues-mr-holmes.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">lawsuit brought by the Conan Doyle Estate, Ltd.</a> against the studio behind Mr. Holmes, the director, and author Mitch Cullin. We took the time to discuss it on <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose78" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Episode 78: Legal and Leisure Ramblings</a>.<br />

But we'd be remiss if we failed to mention the biggest surprise in the legal doings this year: the discovery that <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/08/conan-doyle-sues-own-estate-from-beyond.html#.VoTiohUrLb0" target="_blank">Conan Doyle was suing his own estate from beyond the grave</a>.<br />

We celebrated, mourned and had the opportunity to speak with a number of celebrities of varying sorts this year. The BSI's own <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/02/celebrating-50-years-of-douglas-wilmer.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Douglas Wilmer marked 50 years</a> since his first turn as Sherlock Holmes on the BBC. And Graham Moore, author of <i>The Sherlockian</i> and our guest on <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose30" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Episode 30</a>, won an Oscar for <i>The Imitation Game</i> and <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/02/sherlockians-are-weird.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">his speech became national news</a>.<br />

The world of entertainment — particularly film and television — is rife with Sherlock Holmes news. We mentioned the Gillette film above, as well as <i>Mr. Holmes</i>, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/07/mr-holmes-emotional-and-somber-sherlock.html" target="_blank">of which we provided another review</a>. We also took the time to mark <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/09/remembering-jeremy-brett-20-years-later.html" target="_blank">the 20th anniversary of the passing of Jeremy Brett</a>, who was an influential impersonator of Sherlock Holmes for a whole generation.<br />

We tend to focus our efforts on Sherlock Holmes news, and while this update may seem a little navel-gazing, we'd still like to take the time to reflect.<br />

With this post, we mark <b>our 1,000th entry</b> here on I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere.<br />

It all started nearly 10 years ago with our <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2005/08/the-baker-street-blog_10.html#.VW-xj89Viko" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">first entry introducing The Baker Street Blog</a> - as we were called at the time. Some of the early posts seem downright primitive in comparison, and some of them simply don't withstand the test of time, as other sites and technologies to which they refer are now defunct. But we still keep those posts up, because they act as something of a time capsule and a digital archaeological record of our efforts.<br />
<br />
In mid-2007 we added an audio program (a podcast, if you must) called I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere that ambitiously attempted to commit to weekly or biweekly shows. We burned hot and bright for 18 episodes, then had our own hiatus for over a year. Now we're back on a regular (and sensible) monthly cadence that allows us to give serious thought to our guests and our topics.<br />
<br />
Along the way, we picked up sponsors: <a href="http://wessexpress.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Wessex Press</a> and <i><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/" rel="" target="_blank">The Baker Street Journal</a></i> continue to be our longest-running and most loyal sponsors, along with others who have joined us for s short while. And to them we are thankful.<br />

Ours is a hobby, and as such, we can't cover the news full time - although we have had some lucky breaking news items like the <a href="http://ihose.co/1916film" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">discovery of the 1916 William Gillette film</a> and the <a href="http://ihose.co/ACD_not" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">discovery of a Sherlock Holmes-like story</a> that was purported to have been written by Conan Doyle. As work and family life kept us busy, we shared a goal with Peter Blau at the 2011 BSI Weekend: to turn our site into a group-effort, sharing writing, reporting and commentary responsibilities with as many contributors who would raise their hands. And we welcomed our first contribution from <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/search/label/Gordon%20Dymowski#" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Gordon Dymowski</a>, who has proven to be one of our most profilic writers.<br />
<br />
We created a form to allow anyone to throw his or her hat in the ring to contribute (see it at <a href="http://ihose.co/writeforihose" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">ihose.co/writeforihose</a>) and our stable of writers has grown. You can <a href="http://ihose.co/ihoseteam" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">meet the entire team</a> at <a href="http://ihose.co/ihoseteam" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">ihose.co/ihoseteam</a>. Among those who write for us are Chris Redmond, BSI ("Billy") proprietor of the ground zero for Sherlock Holmes on the web, <a href="http://sherlockian.net/" target="_blank">Sherlockian.net</a>; <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/search/label/terrace" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Francine Kitts</a>, BSI ("Lady Hilda Trelawney Hope"), the BSI's "Angel of Death; and the analytical and thoughtful James O'Leary, who always has a contribution of note.<br />

But it was our syndication of <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/search/label/Matt%20Laffey#.VW-4JM9Vikp" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Matt Laffey</a>'s Weekly Sherlockian Links Compendium that helped to make IHOSE a required destination. Syndicated from Matt's <a href="http://always1895.net/" target="_blank">Always 1895</a> site, we credited Matt with being the Peter Blau of the Internet (although <a href="http://redcircledc.org/" target="_blank">Peter does pretty well online</a> as well) and helping us to stay current with the news. With Matt's participation on his <i><a href="http://wessexpress.com/html/newspaper.html" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes and Conan Doyle in the Newspapers</a></i> project with Mattias Bostrom, BSI ("The Swedish Pathological Society"), we understand his priorities while we miss his updates.<br />
<br />
From reviews of books, comics, television, film and even apps, and interviews, analyses and commentary, our team aims to cover as much ground as we can. And like the original Baker Street Irregulars, we "go everywhere, see everything, overhear everyone." [SIGN]  Hopefully our writers aren't finding life as difficult as Neville St. Claire, who was a reporter for an evening paper in London and whose "<b><i>editor wished to have a series of articles.</i></b>" [TWIS]<br />

Along the way, we've developed apps for our audio show, we've created the now-defunct Sherlock Holmes Social Network and then <a href="http://bit.ly/SHCommunity" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">an online community</a> that now has over 2,600 members, <a href="http://www.feedblitz.com/f/?Sub&publisher=445106&sitescope=45933" target="_blank">three options for subscribing by email</a>, a Sherlockian <a href="http://ihose.co/scoopsherlock" target="_blank">link-collecting site</a>, and even <a href="http://ihose.co/flipsherlock" target="_blank">an online magazine</a> that was <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/12/ihose-featured-on-flipboards-magswelove.html#.VW_BKc9Viko" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">featured by its technology founder</a>s.<br />

We've had our fun over the course of 1,000 articles - from the time <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/04/is-long-row-veil_1.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">we fooled some Hollywood media</a> to <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2010/10/to-me-than-twitter-illu_25.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">our live-tweeting of the first series of <i>Sherlock</i></a> on behalf of PBS (and the subsequent series as well), and ongoing series such as our coverage of <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/search/label/%23FreeSherlock#.VW-63c9Viko" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Conan Doyle Estate's legal issues</a> and the important <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/search/label/Undershaw#.VW-8Os9Viko" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">efforts to preserve Undershaw</a>. We were recently at a Sherlockian society meeting and we met a number of our listeners, which we always love doing. We told him that he didn't have to do that; he could download our episodes to his smartphone and take it on the go with him - on walks, at the gym, on his commute, etc.</span><br />
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span><span style="font-weight: normal;">Smartphone use has grown exponentially since we first began broadcasting in 2007. In fact, that was the year that the iPhone launched, and with it, the app marketplace that has given rise to everything from Angry Birds to apps that can control your hotel TV with your phone. So it should be no surprise that I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere is mobile app-enabled as well.</span><br />
