It’s usually a comic, theatrical retelling of a fairy tale — like Cinderella or Aladdin — with slapstick for the kids, cheeky innuendo for the adults, and a cast that includes a campy "Dame" (a man in an over-the-top dress). </p><p>Now Holmes, Watson, and the world of 221B have been lovingly added to the panto tradition in <i><a href="https://www.birmingham-rep.co.uk/whats-on/sherlock-holmes-and-the-12-days-of-christmas/" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes and the 12 Days of Christmas</a></i>, playing through January 18, 2026, at England’s Birmingham Rep. The show is also a genuine whodunnit: West End stars are being murdered in mid performance. Can Sherlock Holmes solve the case?</p><p>It’s all the work of our guests <b>Humphrey Ker</b> and <b>David Reed</b>, writers and stars whose love of the Victorian Age, history, and classic literature has infused almost twenty years of collaboration. You’ll hear about their work creating radio plays for the BBC, stage shows for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and their adventures as two-thirds of the comedy troupe “The Penny Dreadfuls.” </p><p>You’ll also learn how <i><b>Sherlock Holmes and the 12 Days of Christmas</b></i> came about, and how it came to inspire new songs by <b>Tim Rice</b> and <b>Andrew Lloyd Webber</b> — creators of some of the most enduring musicals in history.</p><p>Then it’s on to our review of Sherlockian society activities in the second half of January in "The Learned Societies" segment. Lee Eric Shackleford is a man of many talents. So many, in fact, that we don't have time to get into all of them in a single episode.<br />

</span><span style="font-weight: normal;">To Sherlockians, Llewellyn was best known for his work in the one-may plays </span><b><i>Sherlock Holmes: The Last Act</i></b><span style="font-weight: normal;"> (1999-2014) and </span><b><i>Sherlock Holmes: The Death and Life</i></b><span style="font-weight: normal;"> (2014), both written by </span><b>David Stuart Davies, BSI</b><span style="font-weight: normal;"> ("Sir Ralph Musgrave"). According to <a href="http://www.davidstuartdavies.co.uk/sherlock-holmes">Davies' website</a>, the former premiered at Salisbury Playhouse in 1999 and won an award at the Edinburgh Festival that same year. The latter was commissioned by Llewellyn and opened at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford.</span><br />

Sherlock Holmes has been associated with the stage since Charles Brookfield was the first to play the character in <i>Under the Clock</i> in 1893. Since that time, the great detective has been portrayed countless times by hundreds of actors in big productions from the West End to Broadway, as well as in community theaters everywhere.<br />
<br />
In this episode, we spoke with playwright David MacGregor, who is a resident artist at Jeff Daniels' Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea, Michigan. He has written for the stage and film and his inspiration includes Shakespeare, Dickens, and of course, Conan Doyle. David's latest work is an intriguing tale called <i><a href="http://www.purplerosetheatre.org/sherlock-holmes-and-the-adventure-of-the-elusive-ear/">Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Elusive Ear</a></i>.<br />
<br />
David doesn't give away the plot, but he did tell us that Oscar Wilde, Vincent van Gough and others find themselves in the presence of the great detective, and the result is a mixture of comedy, tragedy, romance, adventure and more. Directed by Guy Sanville and holding previews on March 29, the play opens to the public on April 6, 2018.<br />

From his home base in Memphis to 221B Con and the BSI Weekend, he's been seen in exquisite and faithful costumes inspired by William Gillette, Jeremy Brett an Basil Rathbone. Tim is an award winning Sherlockian, having been honored with the Beacon Award from the <a href="http://www.beaconsociety.com/" target="_blank">Beacon Society</a> and the <a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/morleymontgomeryaward.html" target="_blank">Morley Montgomery Award</a> for the best article in the <i>Baker Street Journal</i> in 2014.<br />

Tim's specialty is the theater, and he shares his inspiration with us, ranging from the difficulty in physically portraying a cerebral character to the proper staging and set decoration of the sitting rooms at 221B Baker Street. Sherlock Holmes has been presented on stage in one way or another for 125 years and there continue to be many interpretations and inspirations ahead.<br />

This week, David Arquette has been starring in Greg Kramer's "Sherlock Holmes" at Washington, D.C.'s Warner Theatre for a limited engagement that runs November 17-22.<br />
<br />
The show premiered in Montreal in 2013 at The Segal Centre directed by Andrew Shaver, who is remounting the show for a North American tour which launches in Los Angeles, followed by engagements in Toronto, Washington, D.C. and Chicago, with other cities planned into 2016 and to be announced shortly.<br />

This production received five prestigious Montreal English Theatre Awards, including Outstanding Production and Outstanding Director.<br />

Plans for a film version and other live day-date viewing or streaming options are being considered.<br />

The play has already been staged in October at the Ricardo Montalban Theater in Los Angeles and the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto. Next week, the troupe heads to Chicago for an engagement at the Oriental Theatre from November 23-29.<br />

Theatrical Sherlockians probably know Ken Ludwig best for his play <a href="http://www.kenludwig.com/the_games_afoot/the_games_afoot.php"><i>The Game's Afoot</i></a>, which focused on William Gillette and won an Edgar® Award from the Mystery Writers of America for the best play of 2012. <div><br /></div><div>More widely cultured individuals know that he is an internationally-acclaimed and Tony® Award-winning playwright whose work has been performed in more than 30 countries in over 20 languages. He has had six shows on Broadway and six in the West End - including <i>Lend Me a Tenor</i>, <i>Moon Over Buffalo</i>, and <i>Crazy For You</i>.<br />

Ken Ludwig was kind enough to join us on the show to discuss his latest project: <i><b>Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery</b></i> directed by Amanda Dehnert, which opens the <a href="http://arenastage.org/shows-tickets/the-season/productions/baskerville-a-sherlock-holmes-mystery/" target="_blank">Arena Stage</a> in the Kreeger Theater in Washington, DC before moving along to <a href="http://www.mccarter.org/ticketoffice/eventdetail.aspx?page_id=7&event_id=9034" target="_blank">McCarter Theater Center</a> in Princeton, NJ. The previews run January 16 - 21, 2015 and <b>tonight</b> - January 22 - is its official opening night at Arena, running through February 22. The play runs at McCarter Theater from March 10 - 29, 2015.<br />

He describes the production as an adventure with comedic exuberance, and one that is as much about the theater as it is about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. And with just five actors playing 40 parts in a variety of accents and disguises. But Ludwig is quick to note that it is respectful of the characters and of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.<br />

Questions naturally arose as the discussion continued: How does one represent such various settings as railway stations, Dartmoor, Baskerville Hall, the streets of London, etc. that are vastly different from the traditional "living room / sitting room" setting we're used to seeing in the theater? How is the hound brought to life? We also probed at what initially drove Ludwig to Sherlock Holmes and discovered that he managed to work the character into his professional life fairly quickly.<br />

When we asked Ken answered to the questions of why The Hound of the Baskervilles and why now with: "There's a Hound in all of us."<br />

This year saw lectures about ACD at the Arthur Conan Doyle Centre, Edinburgh Medical Detectives featuring Dr. Joseph Bell, the inspiration for Holmes, two different productions of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, and even a Forensic Mind Reader who promised to deduce personal information about you <i>a la </i>Sherlock. Besides the scheduled Fringe events the National Library of Scotland has the original manuscripts of <i>The Illustrious Client</i>, and Doyle’s first short ghost story <i>The Haunted Grange of Goresthorpe</i>, written possibly in 1877 or 1878, plus select ACD correspondence. And across from the Conan Doyle Pub on Picardy Place there is a statue of Holmes commemorating the birthplace of <strike>his author</strike>  Watson’s literary agent, Doyle.<br />

But this year’s Fringe premiered <i><a href="https://www.pleasance.co.uk/event/potted-sherlock" target="_blank">Potted Sherlock</a></i> – all sixty stories told in a fast moving seventy minute comedic production of farce, word play, sight gags, pop culture references, frantic costume changes, seltzer bottle slapstick, skits and songs. The longer skits focus on the <i>Hound</i> (hoooooowwwwwwlllll), <i>The Sign of Four</i>, "The Speckled Band" and <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> with appearances of the demi-puppet Moriarty at inopportune times.  The family-friendly show glosses over Holmes's use of a seven-percent solution and manages to condense 21 stories to a few lines each in a musical number parodying Billy Joel’s <i>We Didn’t Start the Fire</i>:<br />

I attended <i>Potted Sherlock</i> twice – it was that much fun and the lines flew by so quickly that I wanted a second opportunity to try to catch them all (and discovered that some of those <i>ad lib</i>s were in name only and worked because of clever scripting and the performers’ great timing). Dan Clarkson, one of the authors, played Holmes, Watson, Moriarty and whoever-else-was-needed. His longtime partner, Jeff Turner, and Lizzie Wort, an old classmate of Dan’s from Bretton Hall, University of Leeds, also madly traded deerstalker, pipe and bowler as required as the three alternately played Holmes, Watson, Mrs. Hudson and also whoever-else-was-needed. The enthusiasm they brought to this comic re-telling of the Canon was infectious and the hammy asides Dan made to the audience created a warm rapport with young and old.<br />

<i>Potted Sherlock</i> follows the award winning <i>Potted Potter</i>, all seven Harry Potter books told in seventy minutes, which debuted in 2006, had five sold-out Fringe seasons, five sold-out London runs, extensive United Kingdom and international tours prior to its critically-acclaimed US premiere at the Little Shubert Theater in New York City in 2012. <i>Potted Sherlock</i> will be opening in London’s West End at Christmas time. Let us hope that the troupe brings their talent to NYC once again.<br />

I was fortunate enough to be able to interview the writers, Dan Clarkson and his brother Tom, after one of the performances. Before seeing the show and meeting them I was a bit cynical about how they came to write a comedic show about Holmes and Watson. The Harry Potter series, much loved as the stories are, was complete and <i>Potted Potter</i> had run its course. With the great entertainment media interest in Holmes the last few years, I initially thought that they might be just jumping on a bandwagon.<br />

I quickly discovered that these two brothers are true Holmes fanboys – the show was created from the heart, with their love and admiration for the stories showing through the on-stage shenanigans. In fact, when they learned that I was a BSI member, they said they were nervous about hearing from a Sherlockian expert ("My blushes, Watson!"), asking if I thought they were being faithful to the stories. Dan told of reading the tales growing up and even arguing with a teacher that the most venomous snake in the world was the Indian swamp adder – Sherlock Holmes said it was so!<br />
<br />
The two of them wrote a few skits making fun of some of the inconsistencies (?!) in their favorite stories when Dan’s producer suggested doing all 60 stories in a Potted version. They welcomed the challenge and began researching and writing.They spent weeks re-watching the Granada Jeremy Brett series and Basil Rathbone movies and re-reading the stories.They also spent a day or two in Dartmoor to experience the gloomy atmosphere as they were writing the script. Despite the silliness inherent in the show, I think their love for Holmes and Watson comes through clearly.<br />
<br />
As popular and successful as <i>Potted Potter</i> was, I predict that <i>Potted Sherlock</i> will be even more popular.  If you are fortunate enough to be in London this Christmas season, do not miss it. As soon as I learn of its US debut I will be purchasing my ticket!<br />

Playwright Steven Dietz was commissioned by the Arizona Theatre Company in 2005 to write a Sherlockian play; the result was <i>Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure. </i>The world premier of <i>Sherlock Holmes </i>was produced in 2006 by the Arizona Theatre Company and the play was awarded an <a href="http://www.playbill.com/news/article/dietzs-sherlock-holmes-wins-2007-edgar-award-for-best-mystery-play" target="_blank">Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Play in 2007</a>. My wife and I were fortunate enough to attend the Ethington Theatre's recent production of the play. The Ethington Theatre is a small, intimate venue on the campus of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona.<br />

Adapted from the 1899 play by William Gillette and Conan Doyle, Dietz's <i>Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure </i>retains some of the same plot points as the Gillette play while at the same time repackaging them with some new elements. Dietz's adaptation is a clever blending together of the major plots from <i>A Scandal in Bohemia</i> and <i>The Final Problem</i>, but unlike the Gillette script Dietz keeps the name of Irene Adler for the female lead character.<br />
<br />
<i>Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure </i>is at heart still a mystery/adventure story, but Dietz also incorporates elements of romance and humor involving the characters of Holmes and Watson, which are themes that are not typically as prominent in the Canon. Holmes is portrayed as somewhat of a smug, condescending character who enjoys a joke at Watson's expense. As for the Doctor, he comes across as a bit of a bumbling oaf. It doesn't ruin his character, but that aspect of the Watson persona is certainly played up more than is typical. One of the most notable departures from the Canon is Holmes' romantic involvement with Irene Adler.<br />

The story is narrated throughout by Doctor Watson, as one would expect, and chronicles the tale of the scandal involving the King of Bohemia and the desperately sought after photograph of the king and Miss Adler. The photograph and the character of Godfrey Norton play a much larger part in the grand scheme of this adaptation than in <i>A Scandal in Bohemia. </i>After several attempts at retrieval of the photograph and just as many run ins with Professor Moriarty and his minions, the play culminates in that iconic struggle at Reichenbach Falls.<br />

<i>Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure </i>is a masterful meshing of the plots from two of the most well known stories from the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle short stories. The audience is also presented with an interesting perspective on Holmes' two rivals; the evil Moriarty and the beautiful Irene Adler. Each of them outwit Holmes in various ways, but yet the contrast between their characters is very striking.<br />
<br />
Steven Dietz does a fine job of marrying the quintessence of the Holmes and Watson characters with a few new characteristics resulting in a play which provides a couple of hours that are quite entertaining. And while Canonical purists may not appreciate <i>Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure </i>most folks will find it quite enjoyable; even those who are not hard-core Holmes fans.<br />
