Reilly.</p><p>The convention will be held on the weekend of March 1 – 3 in Sioux City, Iowa, at the Dakota Dunes Roadside Motel and Convention Center.</p><p>Attendees can attend panel discussions, visit the Merchandise Room to purchase apparel, collectibles, and books, cosplay as their favorite characters, and read their favorite fan fiction at live readings. Organizers recently added the event "<i>Holmes & Watson</i> After Dark," a reading of erotic fan fiction.</p><p>Attendees will also be able to get autographs and attend panel discussions by notable cast members of the film.</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Mark Anthony Dawson, who played the uncredited role "Beefeater #1," will sign autographs and lead a Q&A session about his work on the film, including questions about the craft table and his brief interactions with Will Ferrell's personal assistant.</li><li>Attendees can also attend a viewing of a pre-recorded Zoom video Q&A with Wesley Kent-Hargreaves, who portrayed Weird Child Companion.</li><li>The uncle of Hector Bateman-Harden, who portrayed Young Sherlock Holmes, will be selling original headshots of his famous nephew in the Merchandise Room for $10 apiece or two for $18.</li></ul><p></p><p><br /></p><p>"This is a big deal for us," said Dakota Dunes assistant night manager Carl Alcorn. "We haven't had any celebrities of Mr. Dawson's magnitude here in several years. Holmes & Watson was the pinnacle of their comedy genius."</p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2019/02/sherlock-holmes-brings-home-major-film.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>Holmes & Watson</i> won Golden Raspberries in 2019</a> for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Supporting Actor, and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel.</p><p>Photos of the Golden Raspberries will be on display in the Autograph Area and Breakfast Nook, where fans can take selfies with the photos for $10.</p><p><br /></p><p>"It's an honor just to have been part of this amazing cast and crew," said Jacob McGrath, who will attend H&W Con and work as the Merchant Room's overnight security guard. "I was just minding my own business, drinking and sitting in an alley, when I was picked to be an extra for the courtroom scene. Their craft table was amazing. I hadn't seen that many Twinkies and Ding Dongs in one place. And now I get to honor the memory of that wonderful production by guarding over its collectibles. It was a mixture of his background and experience, and his nearly life-long love of Sherlock Holmes.</p><p>It also helps that he lives in close proximity to the location where Conan Doyle spent his first honeymoon—a location with an eerie occurrence that may have led to the selection of the Great Detective's name.</p><p>You'll want to see if you can test your knowledge with the <b>Canonical Couplet</b>: we give you two lines of poetry that describe one of the stories, and you name it. Why do people experience Sherlock Holmes in everything from Science Fiction to Martial Arts?</blockquote> Derrick Belanger, Sonia Fetherston, BSI (""), and David Marcum are editing this volume that includes contributions from a variety of Sherlockians new and old from across the globe. Not only are critical characters and plots from the Canon seemingly ignored, but crucial elements of the anime franchise have also been completely jettisoned. There are no traces of Pokémon World to be found, as the action unfurls in a modern-day city. Ash, Pikachu’s loyal friend, has been supplanted by a young man identified on <a href="http://www.pokemon.co.jp/ex/TANTEI-PIKA/" target="_blank">the game’s website</a> as Tim. The gaming icon himself has undergone the most drastic changes; donning a deerstalker cap, Pikachu now drinks coffee and speaks full sentences in a deep baritone that is a far cry from his traditional shrill cries.<br /> <br /> <div> These surreal changes make the experience of watching Great Detective Pikachu hilariously weird, but multiple viewings of the video reveal that the creators of this game have read their Conan Doyle. Sherlockians will be pleasantly surprised to discover that the trailer captures key atmospheric details straight from the Canon. Detective and assistant still prowl foggy streets cast with ominous shadows. A glimpse of our hero’s study reveals a distinctly Holmesian style of clutter, complete with stacks of paper, leather-bound books, and a microscope perched on a nearby shelf. <br /> <br /> The ad even contains pointed nods to other prominent Sherlock adaptations; as <a href="http://www.ew.com/article/2016/01/26/pokemon-great-detective-pikachu-trailer" target="_blank">Entertainment Weekly</a> notes, the trailer’s music is remarkably similar to David Arnold and Michael Price’s celebrated score for their BBC television hit. An observer with knowledge of Martin Freeman’s role on <i>The Office</i> might wonder if it is purely a coincidence that the game’s Watson-esque character shares a name with the beleaguered Tim Canterbury. Reviews for the game are yet to come, but there are plenty of reasons to anticipate a loving, respectful, and clever result that simultaneously subverts and surpasses expectations for such a crossover.</div> <div> <br /> <br /> <div> <center> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Y9j9RWkPstc" width="640"></iframe></center> </div> <div> <br /> But perhaps one might not be too surprised to see these two beloved characters united, as Sherlock Holmes has left an impression akin to that of Pikachu upon Japanese culture. While Pokémon has risen to prominence in the last twenty years, the Holmes stories have been in Japanese circulation since 1894, becoming so popular that they rank among the most requested books in junior high libraries, according to the <a href="http://www.holmesjapan.jp/english/history.html" target="_blank">Japan Sherlock Holmes Club</a>. The Canon has also been incorporated into national learning materials, with certain stories used as examples of proper deductive methods in the “Textbook of Logic” studied by high school seniors.</div> </div> <div> <br /> Holmes's influence also goes beyond the classroom, extending into Japanese culture and media. The country boasts thirty Sherlockian societies, with its largest, the Japan Sherlock Holmes Club, supporting <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=X3OIoRbJFhAC&pg=PA283&lpg=PA283&dq=sherlock+holmes+connections+to+japan&source=bl&ots=4rw63G4oE8&sig=nYMmveSP7B9KJhwdMg2e0vl_Sso&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjvxcKpt8vKAhWERyYKHfWpCFA4ChDoAQgiMAE#v=onepage&q=sherlock%20holmes%20connections%20to%20japan&f=false" target="_blank">over one thousand members</a> and eleven separate branches. Commander Data donned a deerstalker. The Intergalactic Etc. Sherlock Bones series is arguably the first Star Trek crossover character (1975), as it predates <i>The Federation Holmes</i> (1978). These stories represent opposite ends of the crossover literature; <i>The Federation Holmes</i> is a Sherlock Holmes pastiche, while the Sherlock Bones series was a Star Trek parody.<br /> <br /> In the 22nd Century, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are recreated on the planet from the original <i>Star Trek</i> series episode “Shore Leave.” Their existence is devised to counter the evil of the previously recreated Professor Moriarty. These stories first appeared in issues of <i>The Holmesian Federation</i>, which first appeared in 1978. Later, they appear only in cameo roles. Quickly Holmes and Watson set up their agency on Memory Alpha. Holmes dives into learning alien cultures and customs; collects his scrapbooks; and resumes publishing scientific papers. Watson adopts the new medical instruments, stashing his medical tricorder, medikit and hypo spray in his Gladstone bag. Some memorable guest stars were Cyrano Jones, Denebian Slime Devils and a mention of Lord <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/08/episode-06-peter-blau-part-1.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Peter Blau</a>.<br /> <br /> The stories are well written, and have a distinct Watsonian flair for painting the scenes that bring a reader into the story. Unlike the original Canon, the stories were written in the third person.<br /> <br /> <br /> Before the Holmesian Federation, the Intergalactic Etc. first published a Star Trek Fanzine in 1975. “Sherlock Bones” appeared in the first issue; his stories were a regular feature running in each issue. Due to their popularity, three special collections of the stories were printed: <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Bones #1</i>, <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Bones #2</i>, and <i>Sherlock Bones Strikes Again</i>.<br /> <br /> With titles like “The Clandestine Adventure of the Arcane Tomato” and “From the Reminiscences of Doctor Leonard McCoy”, the stories were tongue in cheek, with Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy putting Nurse Chapel to work as his assistant, Nurse Watson. He created his own network of crewmembers to aid in his investigations, the Medical Unit Irregulars, headed by Ensign Chekov. Together they fought against the evil Professor Spockiarty. Some of the stories borrowed incidents from the Canon and adapted them to adventures onboard the Enterprise.<br /> <br /> As an editor-author of the Intergalactic Etc., it would be difficult for me to objectively review these stories. Rereading them during the writing this post has proven entertaining as well as nostalgic. They were written during the editors’ years in high school and college, spanning almost a decade. An objective review that <a href="http://www.mrhalliday.com/klhalliday/Zinedex/ContentsS.htm#SherlockBones" target="_blank">appears on Halliday’s Zinedex</a> commented “they've grown on me and now I think they're pretty fun.”<br /> <br /> These fanzines are occasionally available on eBay, but there is a rumor that the editors are considering a re-release. Since then, there have been countless stories published or posted to the web. To start learning about more recent crossovers, <a href="https://www.fanfiction.net/Star-Trek-2009-and-Sherlock-Crossovers/4863/7190/" target="_blank">check out Fanfiction.net, a database of fanfiction works</a>. <br /> <br /> <br /> These crossovers influenced both universes. Tying Sherlock Holmes into the Star Trek universe was a way to increase the buzz about a canceled series and engage more fans. In those day, fanzines and conventions were the primitive equivalent to current social media.<br /> <br /> When the first story appeared in the first issue in 1975, the series had concluded six years previously, leaving the fans wanting more. The Star Trek fan movement and the fanzines kept the franchise alive, and even influenced the naming the first space shuttle built for atmospheric test flights. At the time when these early stories were written, Star Trek’s fan movement may have influenced the Sherlock Holmes universes less dramatically, but it served as a way to keep the Canon relevant.<br /> <br /> The stories demonstrated that Sherlock Holmes can be part of any place, any time. But, alas, there is not time enough even to begin to keep up with it all. I knew that many different types of fan conventions have been held over the years – back in 1979 I was in San Francisco and accidentally walked into a Star Trek convention. As a reader of science fiction I was aware of <a href="http://www.bouchercon.info/" target="_blank">BoucherCon</a>.  I also vaguely knew that the genre ‘fan fiction’ existed – after all what Sherlockian doesn’t enjoy a good pastiche.<br /> <br /> But I really didn’t know much about the fanatics who follow the BBC's <i>Sherlock</i> and have become devotees of the Master – and in ways surprising to this old campaigner.  The city of Atlanta hosted <a href="http://www.221bcon.com/" target="_blank">221B Con</a> on the weekend of April  4-6, 2014 with over 1,000 in attendance. Not surprising, you may say. After all, Sherlock Holmes is beloved by millions, and the BBC series as well as <i>Elementary</i> and the Robert Downey, Jr. movies have generated a fair amount of commentary even amongst curmudgeonly old Sherlockians who may prefer to light up a fine cigar, sip a snifter of brandy and discuss the original stories in the comfort of an over-stuffed leather chair in their club’s private library – not that there is anything wrong with that, as they say on <i>Seinfeld</i>.<br /> <br /> 221B Con is in its second year.  In 2013 the organizers, I was informed, expected about 70 attendees – 700 showed up! The 2014 version was, to use my 1960’s parlance, mind-blowing, a real trip, and even psychedelic! Or to use the analogy of a fellow Sherlockian who is also a Lewis Carroll fan, it was a journey “down the rabbit hole” to follow a new trail that has suddenly appeared, solely for the excitement of a surprising adventure and discovery of the unusual. A fan convention, or at least <i>this</i> fan convention, was a combination of presentations, panel discussions, showings of old and new SH media portrayals, book signings, an actual tea party where Mrs. Hudson (Marilynne McKay, BSI, ASH in Victorian costume) helped serve the attendees, performances by the <a href="http://www.artc.org/" target="_blank">Atlanta Radio Theater Company</a> (shades of Friends of Bogey’s on Baker Street!) and the steam-punk band, <a href="http://www.theextraordinarycontraptions.com/" target="_blank">The Extraordinary Contraptions</a>, vendor tables and a costume contest!<br /> <br /> Even at that 1979 Star Trek fancon there were Klingons, Spocks, Kirks, Uhurus, and McCoys in abundance. But imagine my surprise when I walked into the Marriott to be greeted by Hugh Hefner and five Baker Street Bunnies (AKA Cumber-bunnies?) and an <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2012/04/episode-41-woman.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Irene Adler straight out of BBC <i>Sherlock</i></a>, with riding crop and sheer see-through dominatrix outfit. There were plenty of Sherlocks and Johns, Marys (in their black-op spy outfits), Mrs. Hudsons and even Moose-croft and Deer-lock (don’t make me explain).  Cosplay at 221B Con goes far beyond the wearing of a deerstalker or Inverness cape seen at t<a href="http://bsiweekend.com/" target="_blank">he annual birthday weekend in New York City</a>.  <br /> <br /> Programs included, but not limited to: The Napoleon of Crime, Minorities in Elementary, Canon 101, Brett vs. Rathbone, Holmes Through the Years, Art in the Blood, ACD’s Other Works, From Baker Street to the Holodeck, Teaching Sherlock Holmes, History of Fingerprinting, Burke vs, Hardwicke, Russian Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the Occult (at which I presented a recording of a conversation with ACD from the ‘beyond’!). But most of the panels I attended were more like discussions led by the panelists with the audience than they were formal presentations.  And there was SherlockImprov, a live-action combination of cosplay and improv where the audience participated in mini-dramas created on the spot. This was not a sedate discussion of finer points in the Canon. This was 1,000 people showing their love for Holmes and Watson – not to mention a substantial sub-group showing and approving of Sherlock’s love <i>for</i> Watson (shades of Rex Stout who wrote Watson was a woman!). Older generations may chafe at what they consider outlandish interpretations of Holmes and Watson. But in speaking with many of the younger, and mostly female, Sherlockians in attendance I found that as a group they were very aware of the original stories and enjoyed them immensely, that many knew of the ‘traditional’ scion societies and did participate, and were keen researchers of Doyle and all things Sherlockian.<br /> <br /> I was very envious of a young woman who had not yet finished reading all of the original stories – she could pit her deductive skills against Holmes without being aware of the solution to a story’s conundrum. I have often wished that I could have my memory of the stories selectively erased so I could read them anew again and again. Also, as a group, many were <a href="http://ihearofsherlock.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">Tumblr</a> users - a platform where they can read and post fanfic, pictures, drawings, links, video or audio clips of their favorite actors or authors.  And while I personally will never wear a hand-knitted camouflage deerstalker, I will always defend another fan’s right to do so!<br /> <br /> --<br /> <br />

Wodehouse, pin collecting, the <span style="font-style: italic;">Titanic</span>, antiques, handwriting analysis, coin and stamp collecting, woodworking, needlepoint, jewelry making, wine, pipe collecting, music, period firearms, Victorian attire - the list goes on and on.
