(<i>You do subscribe to us and like us there, right?</i>)<br /> <br /> After a few technical glitches, things got moving, and we were into our natural rhythm. During the first half of the show, we threw out a few of our ideas as to who were some of the characters in the Sherlock Holmes stories who faced <a href="http://ihose.co/trifles169" target="_blank">Loneliness and Isolation</a>.<br /> <br /> In the second half, we opened up the discussion to commenters and viewers, who were very kind, patient and encouraging. And they had some of the best suggestions!<br /> <br /> Little did we know that the streaming interface we were using to broadcast to both channels also allowed us to see the aggregated comments in one place (we were desperately going back and forth to Facebook and YouTube from our interface).<br /> <br /> Nevertheless, the effect of hosts and viewers coming together was a most rewarding one.<br /> <br /> We downloaded the original live video, took out the unnecessary fumbling, and added some graphics. And another tweetalong (or the more commonly-used phrase "Twitter chat") is under way.<br /> <br /> The golden age of Sherlockian tweetalongs was the two years from fall 2012 to fall 2014, when nearly every Thursday evening a Twitter account and a Web browser (or mobile app) would let you watch one of the Granada episodes starring Jeremy Brett and trade comments with fellow enthusiasts across the United States and in Canada, Argentina and the UK. There have been fewer tweetalongs since then, but it's still "a thing," as they say online.<br /> <br /> They're not all based on Brett's performances — I've been involved in tweetalongs of Peter Cushing's Holmes, <i><a amzn-ps-bm-asin="B00PX7SVRY" class="amzn_ps_bm_tl" data-amzn-link-id="67e87d6843a23763d657fb3bf45bfa09" data-amzn-ps-bm-keyword="They Might Be Giants dvd" href="http://www.amazon.com/They-Might-Giants-George-Scott/dp/B00PX7SVRY/ref=as_li_bk_tl/?tag=thebakerstree-20&linkId=67e87d6843a23763d657fb3bf45bfa09&linkCode=ktl" id="amznPsBmLink_1537530" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">They Might Be Giants</a><img alt="" border="0" height="0" id="amznPsBmPixel_1537530" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?source=bk&t=thebakerstree-20&bm-id=default&l=ktl&linkId=67e87d6843a23763d657fb3bf45bfa09&_cb=1447427253923" style="border: none !important; height: 0px !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; width: 0px !important;" width="0" /></i>, and even "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0569913/" target="_blank">The Sting of Death</a>", and there have even been tweetalongs of BBC's <i><a amzn-ps-bm-asin="B004132HZS" class="amzn_ps_bm_tl" data-amzn-link-id="0cc752e4d0141fd07c32714a0c298f64" data-amzn-ps-bm-keyword="Sherlock" href="http://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Season-1-Benedict-Cumberbatch/dp/B004132HZS/ref=as_li_bk_tl/?tag=thebakerstree-20&linkId=0cc752e4d0141fd07c32714a0c298f64&linkCode=ktl" id="amznPsBmLink_2839786" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock</a><img alt="" border="0" height="0" id="amznPsBmPixel_2839786" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?source=bk&t=thebakerstree-20&bm-id=default&l=ktl&linkId=0cc752e4d0141fd07c32714a0c298f64&_cb=1447427299421" style="border: none !important; height: 0px !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; width: 0px !important;" width="0" /></i>. But the 51-minute length of a Granada episode is comfortable for the high intensity of watching in one screen window and dashing out scholarly or smart-alecky comments in another. (Besides, many people think Brett is the greatest and most authentic of all Sherlock Holmeses.) This fall several Granada tweetalongs are being organized by <a href="http://%28artintheblood.net/" target="_blank">Art in the Blood</a>.<br /> <br /> What sort of thing do tweetalong enthusiasts say to one another? It ranges from perceptive comments about filmography ("<i>I love this piece of business: camera on JB, retelling the ritual, his graceful fingers reassembling the crown just so</i>") to affectionate remarks about Brett and Hardwicke/Burke. "<i>Epic sideburns</i>," somebody said when a minor character appeared in a full-face shot. <br /> <br /> Sometimes — tweetalongs are predominantly a female sport, it seems — there are wistful or angry comments about how women were treated by society in the 1890s and, by extension, even today. During a tweetalong of "The Musgrave Ritual," someone tweeted:  "<i>This shows how self-absorbed both Holmes/Brunton are: I can use her, but she won't catch on</i>." Or just: "<i>What a sleazeball.</i>"<br /> <br /> And sometimes the comments show a characteristic that has been attributed to Twitter as a whole: they're so cryptic, or such inside jokes, that few know what they mean. "<i>Holmes: IRL LOL #MUSG,</i>" somebody tweeted at one point. LOL is "laughing out loud", IRL is "in real life", and #MUSG, with the # at its beginning, is a "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashtag" target="_blank">hashtag</a>" identifying what Twitter conversation the comment belongs to. But with all that glossing, I'm still not quite sure what the speaker was saying.<br /> <br /> Sherlockian tweetalongs (and if there are non-Sherlockian movie tweetalongs, I'm not aware of them) started in September 2012. That was when the PBS station in Washington, DC, launched an all-British channel, WETAUK, and started broadcasting a Granada episode every Thursday. Local enthusiasts June Matics and Susan Bailey, doing business as <a href="http://twitter.com/sherlock_DC" target="_blank">@sherlock_DC</a>, started livetweeting what they were watching, and soon folks far from the District of Columbia joined in.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmcO4kOQFqk_MeJfHRhd4U626bpZRXn2ymhZwM-b40fqvrMmSXVwAaw7p4q6lckRjl0xu9pJOqDmlVrPHqoagdbvM_uwaTNinWYHajK662fO1P6fdryZpi41kLhtpsxghW5Y6snFWns4bs/s1600/Sherlock_DC.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmcO4kOQFqk_MeJfHRhd4U626bpZRXn2ymhZwM-b40fqvrMmSXVwAaw7p4q6lckRjl0xu9pJOqDmlVrPHqoagdbvM_uwaTNinWYHajK662fO1P6fdryZpi41kLhtpsxghW5Y6snFWns4bs/s1600/Sherlock_DC.png" /></a></div> It was never a big crowd, maybe a dozen on a good night, but the enthusiasm was contagious, and friendships developed, some of which continue strong. There were also running jokes — every week one participant pointed out Brett's lusciously rolled R's, another identified the many, many scenes in which Granada cinematographers made use of mirrors, and of course a few people noted every affectionate word between Holmes and Watson with the hashtag <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23consultinghusbands&src=typd" target="_blank">#consultinghusbands</a>. (Maybe that last one wasn't meant as a joke.)<br /> <br /> "After a year of this," Bailey says now, "the TV station switched up its program schedule, and I kept up the tweeting with my own schedule for almost another year. I like to think that we were both reverential and irreverent. I also enjoyed my research beforehand. I used to look up relevant factoids to tweet and Paget illustrations of scenes."<br /> <br /> But then, she says, "participation started to wane, and I wasn't free on Thursday evenings any more." The final blow came when YouTube, which had been many viewers' easiest source of the Granada episodes, was scrubbed clean of Jeremy Brett for copyright reasons. The last DC-based tweetalong came October 30, 2014, and a Sherlockian era was over.<br /> <br /> Since that time,  <a href="http://twitter.com/art_intheblood" target="_blank">@Art_intheBlood</a> has been staging #GranadaHolmes and #Elementary tweetalongs. Differing approaches are seen as passable...but somehow off-label when it comes to how a character <i>should</i> be portrayed.<br /> <br /> So when the opportunity came to view the new online <i>Baker Street</i> series (<a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/02/new-web-series-baker-street-finds-its.html#.VOVXR_nF9gQ" http:="" new-web-series-baker-street-finds-its.htm="" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" www.ihearofsherlock.com="">reviewed by another contributor here recently</a>), I eagerly took it...and I'm glad, because <i>Baker Street</i> is a very entertaining, unique take on the Holmes mythos.<br /> <br /> Created, co-written, and featuring Hannah Drew and Karen Slater as Holmes and Watson, <i>Baker Street</i> should not be dismissed as a fan-made gender-flipped <i>Sherlock</i>. Even though (as Jacquelyn mentioned in her review) the series starts off awkwardly, there is a great, playful inversion of many Sherlockian tropes. (In fact, <i>Baker Street</i> most accurately resembles the Gary Reed/Guy Davis graphic novel <i><a href="http://amzn.to/1An60EM" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Honour Among Punks</a></i>). There's a wonderful sense of immediacy to <i>Baker Street</i>, and unlike <i>Sherlock</i>, the web series takes its time in building narrative momentum despite some early, awkward moments.<br /> <br /> But <i>Baker Street</i>'s greatest asset is how it demonstrates the strength of the canon. <i>Baker Street</i> takes some great creative risks, but at no point does any of it feel inauthentic or somehow betraying the original canon. For those who prefer Conan Doyle's original work - it will still stand. But <i>Baker Street</i> takes some intriguing, clever chances, and demonstrate the ideal that now, Sherlock Holmes is <i>everyone's</i> Holmes, and that creative variations on a theme can bring about new aspects and insights. (Including, as my colleague intimated, the fact that Holmes might be involved in some less-than-legal-yet-still-moral activities before meeting Watson)<br /> <br /> The series may not have the flourishes of language that Conan Doyle's work, but <i>Baker Street</i> makes the effort to bring a real-life sensibility that even <i>Sherlock </i>and <i>Elementary </i>lack. With few exceptions, both characters have been portrayed by male actors. The CBS television show,<i> Elementary</i>, has a female Watson, as did <i>The Return of Sherlock Holmes</i> with Dr. Watson’s granddaughter, Jane, back in the late 1980s.<br /> <br /> But in <i><a href="http://bakerstreet-collective.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street</a></i>, a new video series created, written by, and starring Hannah Drew and Karen Slater, we have Holmes and Watson both played by women. Based in contemporary times as are <i>Elementary </i>and <i>Sherlock</i>, the location of <i>Baker Street</i> is neither London nor New York, but Toronto. Watson in <i>Baker Street</i> utilizes modern technology as BBC’s does by “vlogging” (video blog), and both Holmes and Watson rely heavily on their mobile phones. But here the comparison to <i>Sherlock</i> ends.<br /> <br /> There are currently three episodes of <i>Baker Street</i>, each one longer than the previous. The first episode begins rather shakily and self-conscious, as if the writers/actors are keenly aware that they are treading on hallowed ground. Somewhat contrived and awkward, the short video attempts to establish the characters—college-age women, each in need of a roommate—as initial adversaries, similar to the relationship between Holmes and Watson in the early episodes of <i>Elementary</i>. Watson seems flighty and annoying; Holmes is grumpy and distant—worse than an odd couple they seem destined to kill one another in their sleep. If you stopped there, though, you would only cheat yourself.<br /> <br /> [I must add that, like real college-age women, Watson and Holmes use profanity in conversation. This might be off-putting to some, and I offer a NSFW (not safe for work) caveat.]<br /> <br /> <div style="text-align: center;"> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="338" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5wojZx2HaHE" width="600"></iframe> </div> <br /> It is in episode two that we see Drew and Slater beginning to find their footing, both stylistically and canonically. While we are given to believe that this Watson has the wandering eye of the canonical Watson, a creepy scene with her new employer (a married professor much older than she) includes flirting and insinuation that there is a relationship outside of the office. I found this jarring and unnecessary, and its later denouement could have been reached without the creepy factor.<br /> <br /> In episode two we are generously given some canonical treats. Referencing “The Blue Carbuncle” the production offers us the “Blue Diamond of Morcar,” which has gone missing and which Holmes finds in “anser anser domesticus” or domestic goose (thankfully, the famously nonexistent crop is not mentioned). We are introduced to Constable Stan Hopkins and his puppy dog eyes for Watson, and we find out that Holmes has a sister named Mycroft, who helped get her out of some trouble with the police. [It is worth noting that what Holmes does as a profession is somewhat murky, but it involves car theft, chemical experiments, and a mysterious arrangement doing research for professors, though apparently not Watson’s employer.]<br /> <br /> <div style="text-align: center;"> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="338" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rq3FLM-W-Ig" width="600"></iframe> </div> <br /> The longest of the episodes is the final one so far released. In episode three Drew and Slater take off running. Wit and humor enter the mix, and Watson is no longer annoying but quite capable; Holmes is less grumpy and more thoughtful, and we see a friendship developing that has a welcome familiarity. <br /> <br /> While episode three continues to contain references to BLUE, there is a brief scene involving details about a case that is the kissing cousin to “The Red-Headed League.” As in moments of canonical recognition in <i>Sherlock</i>, this one made me chortle with glee. Another fine moment was in how Watson saves Holmes from a physical assault by a very unsavory character—but I will let you experience that delightful moment for yourself. [NOTE: It is briefly mentioned in a previous episode.] I did find the means to be quite clever; a delightful ground-breaking moment of contemporary efficiency.<br /> <br /> In a memorable scene we see conflict between Watson and sometime-boyfriend Hopkins, where Hopkins must arrest Holmes. This scene contains some fine acting and a delightful throwaway line from Holmes. “I’m not going to arrest myself!” she exclaims, voluntarily walking to the police vehicle as Watson and Hopkins morally struggle with his loyalty to his job and her loyalty to Holmes.<br /> <br /> <div style="text-align: center;"> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="338" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4eBMLWapTB0" width="600"></iframe> </div> <br /> There are moments of brilliance in this final episode—we meet Mary Morstan, a reporter for a college newspaper called “The Strand,” and we find out some surprising details about Watson’s employer/paramour—but as in the revelation of Watson’s manner of saving Holmes, I choose to allow you those moments unspoiled. However, one thing I will tell you is the final line of this episode of <i>Baker Street</i> (a cliffhanger). Holmes says to Watson: "The game is afoot, Jane, and I think we might have made a slight misstep."<br /> <br /> Though Drew and Slater had a few missteps in the beginning, I am confident that they stand on solid ground in <i>Baker Street</i>, and I truly hope there will be more episodes forthcoming.<br /> <br /> --<br /> <br />

To say that it was one of our most technically challenging episode yet would be a massive understatement. But we hope you find that it was pulled off with aplomb.<br /> <br /> <a href="http://bakerstreetbabes.com/babe/lyndsay/" target="_blank">Lyndsay</a>, <a href="http://bakerstreetbabes.com/babe/ashley/" target="_blank">Ashley</a> and <a href="http://bakerstreetbabes.com/babe/ardy/" target="_blank">Ardy </a>faced off against each other with Burt and Scott filling the role of Alex Trebek in what could be summed up as "the nervous tutor, the careless servant, and the three enterprising students."<br /> <br /> In our version, the game revolves around the Canonical references in the BBC's <i>Sherlock</i>. Five categories span the first five episodes of the series and are titled: Pink Profile, Myopic Money, Profound Past-time, Steamy Scandal, and Horrible Hound and range from $100 to $500 in the first half and $200 to $1,000 in the second half. Each contestant rings in with a unique audio signature:<br /> <ul> <li>Lyndsay "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dr8HDRvlKog" target="_blank">Ahhhhhh</a>" [Irene Adler's text message notification planted on Sherlock's phone.]</li> <li>Ashley "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0290712/quotes" target="_blank">I'm a big fan</a>." [Mrs. Hudson's retort to Watson]</li> </ul> <br /> <br /> With Burt's occasional difficulty with the question formulation and Lyndsay's inability to recall that Jeopardy contestants are required to respond in the form of a question, it was as much high comedy as it was a quiz show. Not to mention the Edwardian-era quiz show music we chose.
