<br />Invitations to the <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars Weekend</a> in New York have been sent, and the public website was just updated. <br /><br />Whenever folks get their invitations, there's usually a sense of surprise, relief and even trepidation. Yes, trepidation. For some people, attending the Weekend is a difficult and onerous task.<br /><br />Some simply don't like to be around crowds, or perhaps detest the (often) harsh weather of New York in January. Others boycott for personal reasons. But there are some who simply can't afford the price of the accumulated events and the travel required to get there.<br /><br /><h2>
<b> The John H. Watson Fund</b></h2>
In the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s under Tom Stix, Jr.'s ("The Norwood Builder") term as Wiggins of <a href="http://bakerstreetirregulars.com/" target="_blank">the Baker Street Irregulars</a>, Tom created the <b>Dr. John H. Watson Fund</b>, a financial assistance package for the BSI Weekend, and credited it as his most proud achievement of leading the BSI.<br /><br />According to the BSI:<div>

The Dr. John H. Watson Fund offers financial assistance to all Sherlockians (membership in the BSI is <u>not</u> required) who might otherwise not be able to participate in the weekend's festivities. A carefully pseudonymous John H. Watson presides over the fund and welcomes contributions, which can be made by check payable to John H. Watson and sent (without return address on the envelope) to <b>Dr. Watson, c/o The Baker Street Irregulars, at 7938 Mill Stream Circle, Indianapolis, IN 46278</b>; your letters are forwarded unopened, and Dr. Watson will acknowledge your generosity. Requests for assistance should also be mailed immediately to Dr. Watson at the same address, and must be received by December 3 for timely processing of requests.</blockquote>

It is a wonderful resource that enables more people to enjoy one of the most important aspects of our hobby: spending time in the company of like-minded people. And while there are plenty of opportunities around the world to do this on a local level, the BSI Weekend happens just once a year and celebrates a long-standing tradition (84 years!) that was started by Christopher Morley.</div>

<br />Each year, the Fund is self-liquidating, meaning that assistance is granted to whatever extent is possible to the supplicants, and that generous Sherlockians are responsible for replenishing it every year. Traditionally this was done through simple check-writing, but then the BSI Cocktail Reception added <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/bsi-weekend/" target="_blank">an auction and drawing</a> [<b><i>Editor's Note</i></b>: to be updated], which also raise money for the Fund. Raffle tickets are sold throughout the weekend for some choice items and Peter Blau, BSI ("Black Peter") holds forth as an auctioneer nonpareil.<br /><br /><br /><span style="color: #0e0e0e; font-family: "verdana" , "geneva" , sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px;">--</span></span><br />

Bullying is nothing new. Amid the latest anti-bullying campaigns, it's instructive to note that humans have been dealing with bullies and aggressive behavior since our earliest days.<br />
<br />
Even in the animal kingdom, we see instances of alpha male behavior and even exclusion of some weaker members of tribes by certain groups.<br />
<br />
A quick glance at the Sherlock Holmes Canon will turn up any number of mentions of bullies: <b>*</b><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Ronder</b> was remembered as "A huge bully of a man" and "a coward as well as a bully." [VEIL]</li>
<li>"A more perfect compound of the bully, coward, and sneak than <b>Master Silas Brown</b> I have seldom met with" was how Holmes referred to a suspect. [SILV]</li>
<li><b>Moriarty</b> was perhaps even more intimidating than a bully, as his conversational style had "a conviction of sincerity which a mere bully could not produce," according to Holmes. [FINA]</li>
<li><b>Jack Woodley</b> was "a dreadful person, a bully to everyone else," according to Violet Smith. [SOLI]</li>
<li>When cornered by a victim, <b>Charles Augustus Milverton</b>, one of the greatest bullies-by-blackmailing that London knew, countered with a weak and eventually ineffective "Don't imagine that you can bully me." [CHAS]</li>
<li>When instructed that one of his officers may have allowed a citizen into a crime scene, <b>Inspector Lestrade</b> demonstrated his authority: "a few moments later his bullying voice sounded from the back room." [SECO]</li>
<li>Very effective at keeping visitors away, <b>Colonel Emsworth</b> "was sometimes a bully." [BLAN]</li>
<li>And we can't forget <b>Watson</b> himself, who in his schoolboy years, participated in the bullying of Percy 'Tadpole' Phelps, the nephew of a great conservative politician. Watson admitted that "it seemed rather a piquant thing to us to chevy him about the playground and hit him over the shins with a wicket." [NAVA]</li>

Because children are pretty much the same all over the world, it should be no surprise that we find some bullies at Baker Street Elementary. But we may also find their protectors there as well.</div>

You're probably familiar with Stan Lee's work, as the Marvel universe continues to have its day in the sun. Lee is probably most famous for creating Spider-Man, but he's behind other Marvel wonders such as the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four, X-Men and more.<br />

Stan Lee, the creator who made True Believers of us all, <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/stan-lee-dead-marvel-comics-real-life-superhero-was-95-721450" target="_blank">died yesterday at the age of 95</a>.<br />
<br />

He talked about his childhood, in which he loved to read. This excerpt particularly struck us:<br />

How fascinating! It made us want to dig a little deeper and determine where there might have been some overlap in the Marvel universe and Sherlock Holmes. We're not comic book experts, so we may need your help on this one, True Believers.<br />

The first obvious stop was the Marvel Preview two-part feature of <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>, published in 1976.<br />

Then, of course we turned to our old friend Jerry Margolin, the sine qua non of Sherlockian art collectors, has some original Sherlockian artwork of Will Eisner. Stan Lee was the 1994 recipient of the Will Eisner award. But more importantly, Jerry (who was our guest on <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose16" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Episode 16</a>) has this image of Spider-Man in a deerstalker and Inverness cape:<br />

Now we turn to Sherlock Holmes impersonators. In doing so we find that Robert Downey, Jr. has played Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) in a number of Marvel films and Benedict Cumberbatch appeared as Dr. Strange.<br />
<br />
And our final connection is a trifling one, but as Sherlock Holmes said, "there is nothing so important as <a href="http://sherlockholmespodcast.com/" target="_blank">trifles</a>." [TWIS]  In his monthly column in the 1960s, Lee would sign off with his trademark motto, "<b>Excelsior</b>!" While it is also the New York State motto, we can't deny that the phrase also made its way into the Canon in "<b>The Adventure of the Creeping Man</b>," with this exchange between Holmes and Watson, respectively:<br />

"We can but try."<br />
"Excellent, Watson! Compound of the Busy Bee and Excelsior. We can but try - the motto of the firm. A friendly native will surely guide us."</blockquote>

Throughout the course of his adult life, Sherlock Holmes must have had dental problems.<br />
<br />
We're aware of the complaints he mentioned, such as getting his canine knocked out by Matthews, in the waiting room of Charing Cross Station [EMPT]. And how he would have been well-advised to take protective precautions for his teeth when he boxed against McMurdo [SIGN].<br />
<br />
Any serious dental work on Sherlock Holmes must have been easily hidden. After all, it was Arthur Pinner's gold-stuffed tooth that gave him away [STOC]. Surely Holmes's many disguises would have required inconspicuous dental work so as to keep his identity a secret.<br />
<br />
More observations like this are available in a letter from from Charles S. Wilson, D.D.S. to Charles Goodman, D.D.S. under the title "The Dental Holmes" from <i>Profile By Gaslight</i>.<br />

The name Wah Wah Watson may be familiar to music fans around the world, but to Sherlockians, his name may be a bit more obscure. But his music style was ubiquitous.<br />
<br />
Born Melvin Ragin, he became known as Wah Wah Watson after his extensive use of the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/01/obituaries/wah-wah-watson-dead.html" target="_blank">wah-wah pedal</a> that he used for his guitar which he played with dozens of bands and lead singers such as The Supremes, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, and more.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/01/obituaries/wah-wah-watson-dead.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fobituaries&action=click&contentCollection=obituaries&region=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=6&pgtype=sectionfront" target="_blank">Mr. Ragin passed away</a> last week at the age of 67.<br />
<br />
The wah-wah effect originated in the 1920s when musicians moved mutes in and out of their trumpet and trombone bells. We're sure you've <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Msh45Mruxbo" target="_blank">seen this in action</a>.<br />
<br />
Ragin used the effect on his guitar and it created a signature tune throughout the late 60s and 70s.<br />

<b>The Sherlock Holmes Connection</b></h2>
The reason we're mentioning Wah Wah Watson here isn't only because of his name. In 1976, he released his own album titled <i>Elementary</i>, featuring Watson on the cover wearing a deerstalker and with a meerschaum pipe.<br />

This would have been at the height of Sherlock Holmes fervor that was spurred on by <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose85" target="_blank">Nicholas Meyer, BSI</a> ("A Fine Morocco Case") and his book and film <i>The Seven Per-Cent Solution</i>. Without a doubt, one of the greatest Sherlock Holmes scholars of our time is Les Klinger, BSI ("The Abbey Grange"). Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, he updated and expanded the landmark <i>Annotated Sherlock Holmes</i> by William S. Baring-Gould, BSI ("The <i>Gloria Scott</i>"). His work took on two forms: The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes, published by W.W. Norton, and The Sherlock Holmes Reference Library, published by Wessex Press.</div>

The first appearance of Sherlock Holmes was in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, which appeared in <i>Beeton's Christmas Annual </i>of 1887, which the <a href="http://www.bestofsherlock.com/beetons-christmas-annual.htm#Antique"><i>Antique Trader Vintage Magazines Price Guide</i></a> called "the most expensive magazine in the world."<br />

There were 33 known copies in existence, which Randall Stock, BSI ("South African Securities") lists on his Best of Sherlock website under <a href="http://www.bestofsherlock.com/beetons-christmas-annual.htm">Beeton's Christmas Annual 1887: An Annotated Checklist and Census</a>.<br />
<br />
However, an entry on Peter L. Stern's page on AbeBooks.com recently turned up a <b>34th</b> copy of the Beeton's, <a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=22894373890&searchurl=bi%3D0%26ds%3D30%26sortby%3D17%26tn%3Dbeeton%2527s%26vci%3D38038&cm_sp=snippet-_-srp1-_-title1">listed for $75,000</a>. The description is as follows:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
First Edition; with the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes. Bound without wrappers or advertisements in contemporary paper-covered boards (very lightly rubbed) with a cloth spine titled 'A Study in Scarlet.' The text is unusually fresh. In a custom quarter-morocco slipcase. With four illustrations by D.H. Friston, two of which feature the earliest depiction of Holmes, not yet characterized by the indelible image by Paget the public has held since 1891. Most copies known lack all or part of the wrappers and ads, as the present copy does. We are aware of only two complete copies sold in the last thrity-five years or more. By now, the story of Doyle's misfortune in publishing this story is well-known; he sold the entire copyright for £25. The Annual sold out quickly, as did the 1888 book edition. The following decades saw hundreds of editions, most of them piracies. While Doyle reaped little benefit from this novel, he didn't make the same mistake twice. So far as its historical importance goes, it's all been said before. Suffice it for us to add that in the field of detective fiction (or, perhaps, for popular fiction in general), A Study in Scarlet was the equivalent of the invention of the electric light bulb. The last copy that sold as bound without wrappers or advertisements was sold at Bonhams Oxford for $36,500. There's no indication that the copy above is that same copy.<br />

There's no question that being with other Sherlockians makes things eminently more enjoyable. And that was proven to be quite true during From Gillette to Brett V in Bloomington, Indiana earlier this month.</div>

A Familiar Brand — Inspired by Sherlock Holmes?

We've previously written about <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/03/the-downside-to-having-sherlock-holmes.html#.W8AkX2hKjb0" target="_blank">the curse of being a Sherlockian</a>. You do indeed hear of Sherlock everywhere when you've become intimately familiar with the Canon.<br />
<br />
When we travel (and that's more often than we care to admit), we're very appreciative of high quality hotel bathroom amenities — that is: soaps, shampoos, and the like. And one of our favorite brands is <a href="https://www.gilchristsoames.com/" target="_blank">Gilchrist & Soames</a>. Its very name and branding make it occupy the same space in our mind as <a href="http://www.crabtree-evelyn.com/" target="_blank">Crabtree and Evelyn</a>.<br />
<br />
Both have an air of English heritage about them: the name, the packaging, the stores, and the steeped-in-tradition Victorian/Edwardian inferences; they're "<a href="https://www.cosmeticsbusiness.com/technical/article_page/Crabtree__Evelyn__British_Royalty/49110" target="_blank">quintessentially British</a>." [This is despite the fact that Crabtree and Evelyn began as The Soapbox in the 1970s in another Cambridge: Cambridge, Massachusetts.]<br />
<br />
But Gilchrist & Soames is a little more authentic, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilchrist_%26_Soames#History_and_corporate_ownership" target="_blank">tracing its roots</a> to London (also in the mid-1970s). The name, the logo that bears a passing resemblance to a <a href="https://www.royalwarrant.org/" target="_blank">Royal Warrant</a>, and various lines of amenities (<a href="https://www.gilchristsoames.com/collections/english-spa.html" target="_blank">English Spa</a>, <a href="https://www.gilchristsoames.com/collections/english-garden.html" target="_blank">English Garden</a>, <a href="https://www.gilchristsoames.com/collections/london-collection.html" target="_blank">London Collection</a>) all point to this place of origin, even though the company is headquartered in Plainfield, Indiana.<br />

But is there more to the story? We think we've found the answer.<br />

<b>"the nervous tutor, the careless servant, and the three enterprising students" [3STU]</b></h3>
"<a href="https://www.arthur-conan-doyle.com/index.php/The_Adventure_of_the_Three_Students" target="_blank">The Adventure of the Three Students</a>" is a story that is particularly dear to us. First published in June of 1904, it took place "In the year '95," making it one of those iconic stories that cemented the time and place of Sherlock Holmes as "always 1895."<br />
<br />
The manuscript of this story is owned by <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose77" target="_blank">The Speckled Band of Boston</a>, a group which we've been a member of since 1992, and we've had the opportunity to see it in person at the Houghton Library at Harvard University. It doesn't hurt that we spent countless hours listening to the <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2017/08/remembering-robert-hardy.html#.W8ArmGhKjb0" target="_blank">Robert Hardy</a>-narrated version and the BBC Radio version written by <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose69" target="_blank">Bert Coules</a>.<br />

With such familiarity, it's no surprise that we should recognize names and places in our travels. As a fan of Sherlock Holmes, you're way ahead of us on this one, but we'll be explicit. Holmes and Watson were visiting "one of our great University towns" (we can debate the merits of Oxford versus Cambridge another time), residing "in furnished lodgings close to the library," when Watson tells us:<br />

"Here it was that one evening we received a visit from an acquaintance, <b>Mr. Hilton Soames</b>, tutor and lecturer at the College of St. Luke’s."</blockquote>
Hmm. "Soames," you say? A rather unusual name. But not so unusual; Conan Doyle used it in the in "The Adventure of the Priory School" in January 1904:<br />

"The Priory is, without exception, the best and most select preparatory school in England. Lord Leverstoke, the Earl of Blackwater, <b>Sir Cathcart Soames</b>—they all have entrusted their sons to me."</blockquote>
So far, so good.<br />
<br />
But then we come across the three students for which the story is named: Miles McLaren, Doulat Ras, and <b>Gilchrist</b>.<br />
<br />
That's right. The student is <b>Gilchrist</b> and the tutor is <b>Soames</b>. Based in England, where our eponymous amenities supplier was founded.<br />
<br />
Is it possible that Anthony and Michael Karger, the original founders of Gilchrist & Soames, were closet Sherlockians? Or perhaps they were influenced by the stories at some point in their lives, and this was a nod — subtle or otherwise — to a classic English tale and classic English names?<br />
<br />
It's certainly possible. Is it probable? Well, Holmes himself said,<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."</blockquote>
We think it's quite probable that the brand Gilchrist & Soames was inspired by the Sherlock Holmes stories. We're delighted to think that two of our favorites are intertwined.<br />

If they're not, we don't want to know about it.<br />
