Even for those who don't know his name, his iconic rendering of Sherlock Holmes (as partly inspired by William Gillette) has left us with distinctive imagery.</p><p>Sadly, Steele was buried in an unmarked grave in his family plot at the Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, NY. But the Frederic Dorr Steele Memorial Committee was assembled to solve that. Frederic Dorr Steele is as closely associated with Sherlock Holmes as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, William Gillette, and Sidney Paget—all of whom were consequential figures in making Holmes spring to life for millions of people over the ages.</div>

For more than 40 years, Steele showed the moments that mattered in the Sherlock Holmes stories, illustrating Holmes's appearances in <i>Collier's Weekly</i> beginning with "The Adventure of the Empty House." Would it surprise you to know that <b>Frederic Dorr Steele has no gravestone</b>?</div>

When he died, nearly penniless in 1944, he had been living hand to mouth and in conditions that would have seemed out of sorts for this master illustrator. His ashes were interred in the Steele/King family plot in Albany Rural Cemetary in Menands, New York.</div>

Steele's name should be remembered for generations to come, and this includes his final resting place as well as his artwork. This is why a group of Sherlockians have assembled to form the Frederic Dorr Steele Memorial Committee.</div>

<li>Steele was a Michigander, born near Marquette in the Upper Peninsula (perhaps those "lumber camps of Michigan" that Birdy Edwards was so familiar with [VALL]).</li>
<li>He studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy when he came to New York.</li>
<li>Steele was the first living illustrator to have representation in the Cabinet of American Illustration of the Library of Congress.</li>

The above image may be familiar to long-time Sherlockians. Is is the Folio Society's box set of the complete Sherlock Holmes stories, first published in 1993. Divided into two cases — one containing the four novels, the other the containing the five collections of short stories — the spines of the volumes form a profile of Watson and Holmes, respectively.<br />

[<b>Editor's note:</b> <i>when the Baker Street Journal <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2010/05/fresh-spec_31.html#.WnlnFainHb0">went from stapled to perfect-bound</a> we advocated creating a silhouette over the course of multiple volumes, thus ensuring that those who wished to display a similar illustration on their shelves would continue to subscribe, lest the image be broken. Alas, our suggestion was turned down</i>.]<br />

<a href="http://www.foliosociety.com/">The Folio Society</a> is preparing to release a new set of Sherlock Holmes stories and late last year put out a call for illustrations to accompany it, in conjunction with <a href="http://www.houseofillustration.org.uk/">House of Illustration</a>, as part of its eighth annual <b>Book Illustration Competition</b> (#BIC2018). There were 450 entrants, and 24 have been selected to move to the longlist. Entries came from 48 countries including the USA, Singapore, Iran, Spain and Guatemala, and over 35% of them were from students.<br />

The winner will receive a prestigious £5,000 commission from The Folio Society to illustrate their new edition of <i>The Selected Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes</i>. The five other entrants who complete the shortlist will each receive £500. As part of the Book Illustration Competition’s commitment to nurturing new talent, the judging panel ensures that students form part of the shortlist.<br />

Did you manage to make it to London between October 2014 and April 2015? Neither did we. What we missed was the <a href="http://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/archives/sherlock-holmes/" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes exhibit at the Museum of London</a>. However, we heard from many readers and listeners who did, and they were universally thrilled at the visit.<br />

The exhibition was remarkably well done, and it included everything from props and costumes from the BBC's <i>Sherlock</i> to original Conan Doyle manuscripts and Sidney Paget illustrations. Material was culled from around the world, from collectors and institutions alike, and it made for what was probably the most heralded Sherlock Holmes display since the Festival of Britain of 1951 that brought us the recreation of the sitting rooms at 221B Baker Street - a set that is now housed by the Sherlock Holmes Pub.<br />

But don't fret if you missed the opportunity to see all of these remarkable items together in one place. Now, courtesy of the Baker Street Irregulars Press is a remarkable catalogue - <i><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/london.html" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes: The Man Who Never Lived and Will Never Die - The Museum of London Exhibition</a>.</i></div>

Highlights include the two most important sheets regarding the birth of Sherlock Holmes, three original Holmes manuscripts, two Beeton's Christmas Annuals, eight Sidney Paget original drawings and one by Frederick Dorr Steele. Accompanying the illustrations are the compilers' comments, as well as selected Museum of London captions and contributions by Glen Miranker, BSI ("<i>The Origin of Tree Worship</i>") and Constantine Rossakis, BSI ("St. Bartholomew's Hospital").</div>

We seem to recall a number of times when the Batman / Sherlock Holmes superiority was called into question previously:</div>

<li>It was brains vs. brawn in the 8-panel sketch by 9GAG in <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2011/08/concealed-his-own-formidable-identity_19.html#.VSXmoPnF-mE" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Why Batman Hates Sherlock Holmes</a> in August 2011.</li>
<li>The battle took a musical turn in <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/06/sherlock-holmes-is-everywhere-except.html#.VSX28_nF-mE" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Is Everywhere Except...</a> in June 2014 as Epic Rap Battles of History pitted the two caped crusaders against each other.</li>

One of my friends gave me a collection of comic books they found at a used-books store: the “<b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001HXLURQ/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001HXLURQ&linkCode=as2&tag=thebakerstree-20"><i>Cases of Sherlock Holmes</i></a></b>” series by Dan Day. It was run by Renegade Press from 1986 til ‘88 and then by Northstar Publishing from ‘89 til 1990. I expected these to be a set of original tales featuring the Great Detective, based solely on the cover images. Open up the first issue, and the first page looks like the image seen on the right.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">The illustrations were rich in detail and very evocative of a Victorian setting. Particularly pleasing is the amount of detail given to the characters - more than even the best Sidney Paget drawings could hope to give us, as we view them in reprints. The only drawback to the early issues of the Cases of Sherlock Holmes series is that the text was in ALL CAPS. No need to shout at me while I'm reading a graphic novel.</span><br />

Some of you probably know about these already - for those of you who don’t, they’re worth looking for. They are, simply, the stories from the Canon put to illustration. The illustrations themselves are wonderfully detailed, and the layout is generally easy to follow. Most of the time the illustrations simply decorate the columns of text, but every now and then the reader comes across a dynamic spread - <br />

This is also from the first issue, “The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet”, and shows the confrontation between Holmes and the thief. Granted, there is some artistic license taken with the scene, such as Holmes wrestling over a knife, but it is stunning nonetheless. <br />
<br />
While I’m on the subject of ‘artistic license,’ I should mention an aspect of these comics I find particularly entertaining: the covers. My initial supposition that these comics would be original stories was wrong, but I think I can be forgiven. The title of the story is not printed on the cover, and the illustrations tend towards pulp.<br />

This one isn’t too bad, as “The Adventure of the Six Napoleons” does feature small statues of Napoleon, who is dead, hence the skeletal figure on the horse with the funny hat. <br />

It is the only pastiche in the series.</span></span></div>

Writer Ken Janssens and artist Matthew Martin were gracious enough to offer some of their insights around the upcoming series. For many Sherlockians who read this blog, this is a great opportunity to learn <i>how</i> writers and artists approach the canon when reinterpreting the character for a modern audience.<br />
<br />
According to Ken Janssens, the four-issue <b><i>Sherlock Holmes: Victorian Knights</i> </b>is actually "<i>...two interconnected stories. The first two issues deal with the murder of a prostitute and a haunting by a black spectre. The second two issues deal with the murder of one of the suspects from the first story.</i>" As a lifelong Sherlockian who was introduced to the canon via the Brett series (and who counts <a href="http://librivox.org/the-hound-of-the-baskervilles-by-arthur-conan-doyle/"><b><i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i></b></a> as his favorite Holmes novel), Janssens saw a unique challenge in writing the characters:<br />

<i>Writing them together in a scene is easier than writing them alone. There is a give and take, a yin and yang, that you get to play off of that is extremely fun. They love each other like brothers, but just like vastly-different brothers, they are constantly annoyed and rag on each other.</i></blockquote>
Artist Matthew Martin, who resides in England with his wife and daughter, grew up with Holmes as part of his culture (and he, too, considers <b><i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i></b> his favorite novel). For him, capturing not only the characters of Holmes and Watson - but the era in which they live - presented unique challenges:<br />

Thankfully, both Janssens and Martin are not only fans of the character, but have some very unique tastes when it comes to adaptations of the canon. For Janssens, his personal favorite is "<i>...the 1985 Barry Levinson-directed <b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AUHPC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B0000AUHPC">Young Sherlock Holmes</a></b>. Not only is it a fun ride, the story and atmosphere just pulls me right in"</i>. Although Martin enjoys the Downey film, he admits, <i>"Harking back to my youth though I still have a real soft spot for Disney’s Basil the Great Mouse detective"</i><br />

The refrain "<a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/">I hear of Sherlock everywhere</a>" was first muttered by Sherlock Holmes's elder brother Mycroft, who possessed the deductive faculty to an even greater degree than his younger sibling.<br />
<br />
And while it may be that we do in fact hear of Sherlock everywhere these days, thanks to a resurgence of interest in the character and with new works on television, screen and on the printed page, there are other areas we can point to as well.<br />
<br />
In this case it would be in fan-generated art. And when you have a fan who combines two interests, the result can be fascinating, macabre or even fun. We're delighted to see the inspired casting for the Griffin family. We'd be even more thrilled to see it brought to the small screen, as the Simpsons did in the Treehouse of Horror XV episode "Four Beheadings and a Funeral," featuring Lisa as Eliza Simpson and Bart as Dr. Bartley. The plot concerned the Mutton-Chop Murderer, who was killing prostitutes; it also included such gems as eel pie, steampunk and an opium den. Not yet available for purchase on DVD, it was part of Season 16.<br />

Last year, we celebrated a landmark event: the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetblog.com/2009/05/man-of-excellent-birth-and-education.html">150th anniversary of the birth of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle</a>. Now in 2010, we have another sesquicentennial to highlight: the 150th anniversary of the birth of famed illustrator Sidney Paget.<br />

Paget's influence cannot be underestimated, as he gave Sherlock Holmes life through the visual medium. His illustrations were the first - and likely the most impressionable - images of Holmes that many readers saw, as they helped to visually tell the stories in the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Strand/dp/B000062XRV?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank"><i>Strand Magazine</i></a><i><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=B000062XRV" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important;" width="1" /></i>. To many, just as Basil Rathbone is held in the mind as the definitive Holmes of film, Paget's Holmes is the definitive Holmes of illustrations.<br />

And now to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of this influential artist, the Toronto Public Library is holding a virtual exhibit titled <a href="http://ve.torontopubliclibrary.ca/sidney_paget/index.html"><b>Sidney Paget: Iconic Illustrator of Sherlock Holmes</b></a>. In addition to his non-Sherlockian work, there is also non-Doylean work that the TPL calls out, such as other detective stories and current events in illustrated newspapers. But the images that struck us as the most interesting are those that show Paget's work on Sherlock Holmes spilling over into other illustrations.
