The Collection preserves books, manuscripts, artifacts, and ephemera that illuminate Conan Doyle's life, his beloved Sherlock Holmes, and the cultural impact of his work.</p><p>Laura Weston is the Education and Learning Officer for the Collection at the Portsmouth City Council, making the collection accessible and engaging to a global audience. Laura joins us to discuss the annual Worldwide Doyle conference, a series of virtual talks by writers, fans, and academics who are passionate about Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes. In 1930 he drew a cartoon depicting himself as “The Old Horse,” pulling a wagon loaded with memories. This talk explores his life’s work, underscoring the characteristic decisions which made it uniquely memorable. Also <i>Investigating Sherlock Holmes</i> (with Hartley R. Nathan). He is currently editing <i>Rodney Stone</i> for the Edinburgh New Critical Editions Arthur Conan Doyle Project. </div><div><br /></div><div>His Doylean writing has been published in such places as <i>Journal of Olympic History</i>, <i>Finest Hour</i> (magazine of the International Churchill Society), <i>Journal of the Oscar Wilde Society</i> and <i>Green Bag Almanac and Reader</i>. Doyle was perhaps an unlikely champion for divorce reform which had historically been the preserve of radical thinkers from the feminist and atheist margins. Yet the unpopular divorce reforms of the 1890s helped to assemble a diverse coalition to argue for a complete reformulation and destigmatization of marriage dissolution. Debates on this topic in Britain help to reveal Conan Doyle’s key role in the fraught transition away from deep-seated Victorian attitudes on the subject. The issue formed a crucial part of his developing views on a number of issues including home rule for Ireland, free trade and female suffrage.</div><div><br /> Dr. Jonathan Cranfield is a Senior Lecturer in English Literature and Cultural History at Liverpool John Moores University. There is a whole Sherlockian industry devoted to errors in the Sherlock Holmes stories, but what about when he was writing non-fiction, as in his collection of essays called <i>Through the Magic Door</i>, a collection of charming observations about literature, boxing, and Napoleon, in which Conan Doyle recounts a series of anecdotes about Thomas Carlyle, Walter Scott, Oliver Cromwell, and himself. Often the anecdotes are wrong. And then there are his quotations: often they are wrong too.</div><div><br /> Does it matter? Should we not worry unnecessarily about precision when listening to a good story? What did Doyle himself think? In this talk, Goldfab will explore the errors and the rationale for them, and see if we should care about whether Thomas Carlyle bought a whole set of Gibbon to start his private library.</div><div><br /> Sheldon Goldfarb is editing <i>Through the Magic Door</i> for the new Edinburgh University Press edition of the works of Conan Doyle. Integrating several of these factors into a single story can lead to very irregular storytelling, focusing less on the mystery and more on the uniqueness of the theme.</p><p>Timothy Miller's <b><i><a href="https://amzn.to/41uBRYG" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Strange Case of the Pharoah's Heart</a></i></b> is a uniquely intriguing piece of Sherlockian writing, integrating real-life historical events and genre themes into a compelling read that deserves your attention.</p><p>Miller's premise is intriguing and unique: in 1923, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson had a serious falling-out over their belief systems. Sherlock Holmes has adopted the philosophy of spiritualism over his usual belief in deduction much to Dr. Watson's chagrin. Although they split, Watson is approached by Lady Evelyn Carnarvon whose father sponsored the expedition that discovered the <a href="https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/archaeologist-opens-tomb-of-king-tut" target="_blank">Tomb of Tutenkamen</a>. Soon, Holmes and Watson are joined by a third character, a woman named Estelle Roberts who is a medium who can communicate with the dead.</p><p>Miller's <b><i><a href="https://bookshop.org/a/93253/9781645060819" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Strange Case of the Pharoah's Heart</a></i></b> also takes a unique narrative approach, splitting the narration between Dr. James Watson and Estelle Roberts. While this may dismay Sherlockian purists, it provides great tension between the potentially rational and potentially supernatural. The dual narrative opens up the story, providing insights and perspectives that could be easily missed in a straightforward pastiche. As the mystery progresses, Miller introduces various characters who help both Holmes and Watson shine.</p><p>Describing the plot in greater detail would be unfair to Timothy Miller, as <b><i>The Strange Case of the Pharoah's Heart</i> </b>provides a great reading experience for Sherlockians. It's a horse race named after the iconic race that the eponymous missing horse was scheduled to run in "The Adventure of Silver Blaze."</p><p>Now, before you wonder where a horse race might be staged in Manhattan, let us spoil it by telling you the horses are not actual equines. Last month, interested parties were able to <a href="http://acdsociety.com/Cup/Stables2024.html" target="_blank">purchase a stable</a> and claim their place in the Wessex Cup. </p><p>For those present in New York City for the BSI Weekend, the race may be seen in person, hosted by Otto Penzler, BSI ("The King of Bohemia") at <a href="https://www.mysteriousbookshop.com/" target="_blank">The Mysterious Bookshop</a> — on January 11, 2024, starting at 11:15 a.m. sharp.</p><p>If you're not able to be there, the event will be carried live online. Oh sure, the crimes would be revealed, but the methods were more opaque.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">In <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, Holmes showed his disdain for literary detectives:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><blockquote><div>“Now, in my opinion, Dupin was a very inferior fellow. That trick of his of breaking in on his friends’ thoughts with an apropos remark after a quarter of an hour’s silence is really very showy and superficial. He had some analytical genius, no doubt; but he was by no means such a phenomenon as Poe appeared to imagine.”</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>And Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in <a href="https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/sir-arthur-conan-doyle-interview-1927/" target="_blank">a famous 1927 newsreel</a>, indicated his own dissatisfaction with the mysterious methods of such sleuths:</div><blockquote>“I used occasionally to read detective stories, it often annoyed me how in the old-fashioned detective story the detective always seemed to get at his results either by some sort of lucky chance or fluke, or else it was quite unexplained how he got there. He got there but he never gave an explanation how. Now that didn't seem to me quite playing the game. It seemed to me that he's bound to give his reasons why he came to his conclusions.” </blockquote><blockquote>“But when I began thinking about this, I began to think of turning scientific methods, as it were, onto the work of detection...I had as it were, a new idea of the detective and one which it interested me to work out. The program is as follows (all times are BST):</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Ross Davies and Mark Jones – 26 June @ 7pm</h3><h4 style="text-align: left;"><b><i>Arthur Conan Doyle and the Adventure of the Gaiola Malediction</i></b></h4><p>In April/May, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle vacations on his relatives' tiny paradise of an island estate (Gaiola) off the port of Naples, Italy, where he meets an Italian inventor, who claims to have automated the process of duplicating of sculptures. Conan Doyle buys the English rights to the patented machinery, partners with a colourful sculptor-contractor named W.G. Jones who turns out to be both dishonest and difficult to deal with (not quite a grifter, but pretty close!). </p><p>The whole thing turns into a business nightmare, but not before the plan and Conan Doyle's business (both ultimately unsuccessful) get widespread attention in the news media on both sides of the Atlantic. By June 1905, the madcap adventure is over.</p><p>There are many nifty visuals, and many interesting words in both the news coverage and the private correspondence (including some pretty clearly direct connections to a couple of the Sherlock Holmes stories). Smith called this short-tempered scion). Both wanted to see Sir Arthur recognized for the genius of his creation. (No doubt they also wanted to see some of that sweet royalty money for the estate, but that's a story for another time.)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But doesn't our assignment of Watson as the author acknowledge the true genius of Conan Doyle? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">His ability as a storyteller was so skilled that in some cases, contemporary readers couldn't discern fact from fiction. It has a price tag of £96,000 and is on view at his gallery at the Bluebird Garage in Chelsea, London."</p></blockquote><p>To be clear, <i>ATG</i> stated that this was Conan Doyle's design, rather than his own desk: </p><blockquote><p>"Only seven were made and two of these are owned by Goyard. One is in a French museum, three are in private collections (including this from Oulton).
