We've known for a while that Sherlock Series 3 would <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/10/sherlock-series-3-game-is-on.html" target="_blank">air on PBS Masterpiece on January 19</a>. And we learned that the world premiere of Series 3 would take place <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/11/first-image-and-world-premiere-date-for.html" target="_blank">during a special event at the British Film Institute on December 15</a>. But the world has been waiting to discover the actual air date of BBC One's Sherlock in the United Kingdom.<br />

Until now, that is.<br />
<br />
Yesterday, a black hearse could be seen driving around London with a floral arrangement visible in the rear compartment that read: "Sherlock 01 01 14." The first episode, "The Empty Hearse," will make its way to television sets on January 1, 2014, followed by "The Sign of Three" on January 5, and concluding with "His Last Vow" on January 12. And just like that, Series 3 will be over.<br />

The plot summary for "The Empty Hearse" is as follows:<br />

"Two years after the devastating effects of [Series 2's finale] The Reichenbach Fall, Dr. John Watson has got on with his life. New horizons, romance and a comforting domestic future beckon. It’s what his best friend wanted more than anything, but for John Watson it might well be a case of ‘be careful what you wish for’! <a href="http://alistaird221b.blogspot.ca/2013/11/sherlock-holmes-rip.html"><b>Doyleockian</b></a> author Alistair Duncan in "Sherlock Holmes R.I.P.?" wrote one of his most thought provoking essays yet - the post has garnered  21 comments so far - posing the question: "<i>Is Sherlock Holmes, by which I mean the written Holmes, on the decline?</i>" Duncan worries that the answer is yes, a conclusion he reaches based on observations like the asymmetrical discussion/interest in TV/movie adaptations of Sherlock Holmes versus the Canon on formats like Internet discussion boards. Duncan argues that this division cuts straight down the generational divide with the "younger generation" preferring Holmes on the screen and the "older generation" concentrating on the Holmes of the printed page. So where does this leave us?<br />

"Can this gap be bridged? I’ve seen younger people (under 25 years of age) turn up to events organized by <a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.org.uk/">The Sherlock Holmes Society of London</a> but I’ve rarely seen the same faces twice. I strongly suspect that many of them (not all) have turned up expecting something that revolved around the screen Holmes and have, instead, found themselves surrounded by people more enamored with the Holmes of the page. The result is that they don’t (or rarely) come back." </blockquote>
If Duncan's observations are accurate, the "younger generation" of Holmes-enthusiasts are drifting away from both the original Sherlock Holmes source material as well as the decades old Sherlockian societies, leaving the future of 'Sherlock Holmes' uncertain. So what is to be done? "<i>If the traditional society model is to survive it needs to attract new blood. However, must it change itself significantly to do so and at what cost?</i>" Perhaps Duncan is being overly pessimistic and all is not lost, but his concerns are worth taking seriously. </div>

<a href="http://bakerstreetbeat.blogspot.com/2013/11/a-full-life-and-story-often-retold.html"><b>Dan Andriacco</b></a> asks "just how many biographies of Arthur Conan Doyle does one need?" I've read many a Sherlockian's answer to this question in books, journals and monographs (an answer that ranges anywhere between all of them to none of them), with the overarching theme being that, to date, no single Conan Doyle biography can be called 'definitive', a few can be called 'informative but incomplete' and still some can barely be called 'competent'. But Andriacco isn't attempting to stir the Conan Doyle biography controversy pot here; he simply wants to point out that he picked up two of the newest biographies at his favorite used bookstore: <a href="http://amzn.to/1iVkmUu" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>Conan Doyle: The Man Who Created Sherlock Holmes</i></a> (2007) by Andrew Lycett, and <a href="http://amzn.to/17YssJM" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>The Adventures of Arthur Conan Doyle</i></a> (2008) by Russell Miller.<br />

I've heard many good things about both, particularly the Lycett tome. I'll admit that I've read very few biographies of Watson's literary agent, but if you're looking for a great place to start, I highly recommend <b>Jon Lellenberg</b>'s (ed.) <a href="http://amzn.to/1hjOU2Y" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>The Quest for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: Thirteen Biographers in Search of a Life</i></a> (1987) which is not a biography at all but a collection of reviews/essays by noted Doylean/Sherlockian scholars on each of the major biographies of Conan Doyle up to that point (c. 1987). Let's hope Mr Andriacco reviews his new acquisitions in the near future. <a href="http://gothamist.com/2013/11/13/nypd_turned_to_patrolman_to_create.php#photo-1"><b>NYPD Patrolman's Illustrations</b></a>, created  in 1974, was a pamphlet designed to help New Yorkers deal with the grim realities of city life at the time (e.g., "<i>Before entering your vehicle, make an examination of the backseat or any other place where an intruder might hide...a driver seated behind the steering wheel practically defenseless against quick attack</i>."). The NYPD tapped Patrolman Leo Poulsen whose "<i>illustrations depict a New York of shady, bell-bottomed operators, cartoonish Bowery tropes, full-figured women, and fairy tale characters, all rendered in that bizarre '70s-style caricature that is that is both playful and unsettling</i>." The below illustration is the only one that features a character in the style of Holmes and Watson, but it's a classic example of just how recognizable the form of Holmes is - even if Watson appears to be either checking out Homes' derriere or looking to score some scratch for the gambling table (assuming that Holmes won't give him his checkbook back). </div>

If you want to stay pure of heart and completely spoiler-free, you probably shouldn't watch the trailer or even go to the Daily Mail page; in fact just don't go anywhere near the Internet or any other person who has been near the Internet until late January 2014. If you happen to have magic powers and acquired a ticket to the <a href="https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/Online/default.asp?doWork::WScontent::loadArticle=Load&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::article_id=8F269F5D-31FB-49EB-98CA-083D118A4090&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_id=C7F8515F-E0B1-4385-832D-F98923E1077B" target="_blank">British Film Institute</a> screening of the Season 3 premiere on December 15, 2013, then forget everything I just said and continue gloating in whatever fashion suits you best.<br />

I've yet to watch the trailer or look overly close (I squinted) at the screenshots on the site because I sort of want to remain pure of heart - but because of editorial scrutiny, I've compromised and allowed myself to only view a single Season 3 image, that of a very wonderfully mustachioed John Watson - so how about we stop squinting at the same time, together, and just stare at Martin Freeman with a mustache? Then if at any time between now and when "The Empty Hearse" airs and you begin to have impure thoughts about 'just' looking at a few more screenshots or a 'friend' tries to show you something from Season 3, just close your eyes and think of Watson and his mustache and our hearts will remain pure. </div>

Remembering Jerry Wachs, BSI

The Baker Street Irregulars lost one of their own earlier this month. Jerry Wachs, BSI ("Sir James Saunders") passed away after a long illness. To say that Jerry was loved and respected by all who knew him is an understatement. And rather than dwell on the perfunctory details, we're going to let one of his closest Sherlockian friends remember him.<br />

We asked <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/12/episode-16-collectors-corner-jerry.html" target="_blank">Jerry Margolin, BSI</a> ("Hilton Cubitt") if he might offer a few memories of Jerry Wachs. Here's what he had to say:<br />

I do remember we got along very well, which was easy as Jerry was a funny and intelligent person to talk to. I was staying with my aunt in New York each time I came in for the <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/" target="_blank">BSI Weekend</a> and I think I mentioned that was going to have to come to an end. He immediately offered me the use of his apartment for the next year and I gratefully accepted. That grew into a regular occurrence for the next almost 20 years.<br /><br />Those annual visits to New York when I stayed with Jerry were always great fun. We would stay up until all hours talking, as I said, on various subjects. He was always so gracious in asking about my wife, Judy and our son, and to be really interested in what I told him about what was happening in their lives.<br /><br />Our Thursday night of the BSI weekend was always fun as it became a tradition for many years that a good size group of us would go out for an informal Chinese meal at <a href="http://olliesnyc.com/" target="_blank">Ollie’s</a>. There was always good talk, good food and a very relaxed informal time for all involved.<br /><br />Whenever I arrived at his door for BSI "weekend" - which for me was about 8 days -  I was always greeted at the door by Jerry with a huge hello and I always looked forward to my stay.</span><br />

He always talked about his children in glowing terms. When I stayed with him, we had great discussions on all types of subjects - except we tried never to talk politics! Which anyone who knew him well would tell you was a universal theme: "do not get Jerry started on politics!" The last thing that I want to remember about him, and anyone whoever stayed there can tell you, his love of chocolate - it was in every cabinet in his kitchen, and always two pitchers of red Crystal Light. I think that is the only thing Jerry ever drank.<br /><br />  He also had the greatest collection of 19th Century poetry in private hands anywhere in the world. It was astounding to see and I was allowed to look at some of it since he knew I knew how to handle supremely rare books. I considered it an honor to be allowed to do so.<br /><br />In addition, Jerry was a collector of Sherlockiana. His particular specialty was Sherlockian lapel pins; he had the largest collection in the world. I think it got up to over 1,000 pins and it covered every aspect of the world of Sherlock Holmes. Like most of us, he was very social, very well liked by all who knew him and was very well respected.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br />There are many things I will miss about Jerry: our late night conversations, his graciousness, talking Sherlock with him, some of his chocolate and a few glasses of red Crystal Light, of course. Most of all, I will miss not going to his home when arriving in New York, ringing his doorbell and hearing his loud and welcoming voice, “HELLOOOOO!!!!” as I walk in for my next great week of Sherlock.<br /><br />  Finally, for those who weren't fortunate enough to have known Jerry in life, I'll say that he should be remembered as a true friend who always showed the greatest kindness, generosity, intelligence, and love of family.</span><br />

And now here are the facts, as taken from his obituary:<br />

<span style="background-color: white;">Gerald N. "Jerry" Wachs, M.D. died on Nov. 8, 2013, in New York, at age 76. Jerry had many accomplishments in his life, but none more important than his four children. Jerry was the unabashedly proud and supremely loving father to his four children with Glorya: Sharon (Andy), Joel, Deborah (Andrew), and Judith (Elie). He was also the treasured grandfather to six beautiful grandchildren and the loving brother of Robert. In his nearly 20 years at Schering (now Merck) as a senior associate medical director, Dr. Wachs was responsible for the FDA's approval of over 20 new drug applications. Subsequently, he ran an innovative dermatology and cosmetic surgery practice for 18 years in Millburn and Summit, N.J., and was a past president of the New Jersey Dermatological Society. Jerry was extremely civic minded, serving for seven years on the Millburn Board of Education and as president of the Millburn Board of Health. He was also an avid collector who was most proud of his 19th-Century first edition English poetry collection. Another of his collections led him to become a published author in 2012, co-writing the standard bibliography for Tom Stoppard. Jerry was also a life master in bridge and an invested member of the Sherlock Holmes society, the Baker Street Irregulars. He was the constant companion of Gail Postal for the past 19 years. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.</span></blockquote>

The Internet erupted this afternoon when a 30-second preview for <i>Sherlock</i> Series 3 aired during the <i>Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special</i> on BBC One. We suppose it pays to have a close connection (Steven Moffat) between <i>Doctor Who</i> and <i>Sherlock</i>.<br />

While the video doesn't give too much away, other than that Sherlock Holmes is back, we're particularly pleased to see the in-story Internet fandom very prominently featured in the reaction shots.<br />

The three episodes consist of "The Empty Hearse," "The Sign of Three" and "His Last Vow," and will include Mary Morstan as Watson's love interest and archvillain Charles Augustus Magnussen.<br />

Celebrating Movember with Mustaches in the Sherlock Holmes Stories

If you're not familiar with <a href="http://us.movember.com/" target="_blank">Movember</a>, it's a social movement designed to bring awareness to and have an impact on men's health. This is accomplished by men growing mustaches for the month of November (hence "Movember") and getting the financial support of others. It's along the same lines as other charitable walks and marches, although this is less physically straining.<br />
<br />
While there is no I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere Movember team this year (as a matter of fact, <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/p/our-contributors.html" target="_blank">Burt</a>, one of our podcast hosts, has gone the other direction of late), we thought it might be an appropriate time to pause and consider the many mustachioed men in the Canon.<br />

Of course, the first person of whom we think when we consider mustaches in the Sherlock Holmes story is <b>Dr. Watson</b> himself. In "Charles Augustus Milverton" he was described as "<i>a middle-sized, strongly-built man - square jaw, thick neck, moustache</i>," and his schoolfellow Percy Phelps remarked in "The Naval Treaty" that he would not have recognized Watson "<i>under that moustache</i>." By the time we make it to "His Last Bow," Watson was "<i>a heavily-built, elderly man with a gray moustache</i>." Clearly, Watson kept his look over the years.<br />
<br />
While mustaches in Victorian times were common - so common that <a href="http://theatticbirds.wordpress.com/2012/11/03/celebrate-movember-with-moustache-cups/" target="_blank">an entirely new design of teacup had to be invented</a> - they weren't completely ubiquitous throughout the Canon.There are no fewer than 17 mustaches mentioned in the stories (other than Watson's).<br />

It may seem like sacrilege, but could it just be possible that Sherlock Holmes was the precursor to <i><a href="http://amzn.to/1bEp3Pn" target="_blank">Fifty Shades of Grey</a></i>? Now before you jump to any conclusions (we know what you're thinking and it's not like that at all), let us explain.<br />

It's not that there are sexual innuendos within the Sherlock Holmes Canon - although, Christopher Redmond made a case for that in his groundbreaking book <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0889241422/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0889241422&linkCode=as2&tag=thebakerstree-20">In Bed With Sherlock Holmes: Sexual Elements in Arthur Conan Doyle's Stories of the great Detective</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0889241422" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></i>
 in 1984. We highly recommend trying to pick up a copy on Amazon, eBay or a used bookstore if you find it.<br />
<br />
The nature of the relation between Sherlock Holmes and <i>50 Shades</i> is more along the lines of fan fiction. Yes purists, we said the 'F' word. The bottom line is that Sherlock Holmes has arguably been one of the richest sources of fan fiction, and it goes all the way back to Conan Doyle's time (think William Gillette asking "May I marry Holmes?" as he was planning the plot of his famous play in 1899).<br />

Peter G. Ashman died on August 5, 2013 at the age of 61. Although he lived in Alaska, he died at his daughter's home in California. He was born in Amarillo, Texas and traveled the world with his military family. He graduated from high school in New York, studied at Dartmouth and then the University of Maryland, where he received a Bachelor's degree in history. His fondness for the book <i>To Kill a Mockingbird</i> inspired him to attend the University of Virginia to study law.<br /><br />In 1987 Peter was appointed as a District Court Judge in Palmer, Alaska. He was on the bench for 16 years and made a significant impact on the legal community of Alaska. His professional accomplishments are numerous and distinguished. He received the Judge Nora Guinn award in 2013 by the Alaska Bar Association for his work in providing aid to rural communities, especially the Alaskan native population.<br /><br />Peter's interests included photography, poetry, music, and art. His last great love was the ukulele and he formed a ukulele group of Alaskan judges and lawyers.<br /><br />Peter was a member of <a href="http://www.redcircledc.org/">The Red Circle</a> in Washington, D.C. in the 1970s. He published articles in many Sherlockian journals, created a short-lived scion society called "The Pawky Humorists" which issued a single newsletter, and was a founding member of an epicurean scion in Washington, D.C. called "The Dining Detectives." <br /><br /><div>
Peter Ashman was invested into the Baker Street Irregulars in 1982 as "Peter Steiler the Elder."</div>

The year 2010 was an eventful one for both the Sherlock Holmes franchise and Benedict Cumberbatch's role in it. Benedict had just unleashed his brilliant, modern version of the great detective and still found sometime during that year to record a reading for a series of non-Doyle Sherlock short stories: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1609982665/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1609982665&linkCode=as2&tag=theconblo04-20">Sherlock Holmes: The Rediscovered Railway and Other Stories</a>.<br />
<br />
Some might think it odd for a mega-popular star like Benedict to do voice work (excluding the work he's doing as Smaug, for the Hobbit obviously). But you might be surprised (or not if you're as obsessive a Benedict fan as my teenage daughter is) to know that Benedict is not only an accomplished voice actor but still enjoys doing radio shows on the BBC.The whole time Benedict has been doing the Sherlock series and all of his other, increasing, acting gigs, he's been continuing to do the BBC radio show, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/mn/search/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-author=Benedict%20Cumberbatch&linkCode=ur2&search-alias=books&sort=relevancerank&tag=theconblo04-20&text=Benedict%20Cumberbatch">Cabin Pressure</a>. It's a family favorite.<br />
<br />
I'm very curious about the timing of the events around these stories, because BBC's Sherlock may or not have been released when he did the recordings, but they definitely wouldn't have reached the level of popularity that they have today. So asking Benedict to read these stories was a stroke of incredible luck.<br />
<br />
When you read the reviews on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1609982665/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1609982665&linkCode=as2&tag=theconblo04-20">Amazon</a> and <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9688584-sherlock-holmes">Goodreads</a>, it's obvious that this series owes all of it's success to Benedict's popularity.<br />
<br />
I'm not usually into audio books. But I do enjoy a good Sherlock Holmes pastiche and I really enjoy Benedict Cumberbatch's voice work so this was a win-win for me. I know some people don't like pastiches, but I always find it fascinating to read other people's take on Doyle's work.<br />
<br />
But back to the point of this review. The family and I enjoyed <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1609982665/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1609982665&linkCode=as2&tag=theconblo04-20">The Rediscovered Railway Mysteries and other stories</a> (there's four in all). As far as Sherlock Holmes pastiches, they're okay. They don't capture the spirit of Doyle as well as some but as far as stories they're better than most. But what puts these stories over the top, and makes these worthy of a family road trip, is the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch.<br />

Sherlock Holmes has had an effect not just on literature, but on intellectual inquiry and popular culture as well. An upcoming PBS series will focus on how Holmes' heirs - practitioners of criminal investigation and the criminal arts - have been influenced by the Great Detective's methods.<br />

On November 19th and 26th (<a hef="http://www.tvguide.com/listings" href="http://www.pbs.org/tv_schedules/" target="_blank">please check local listings for showings in your area</a>),  <a href="http://www.pbs.org/">PBS</a> will premiere <b><a href="http://www.pbs.org/about/news/archive/2013/sherlock-changed-world/"><i>How Sherlock Changed the World</i></a></b>, a two-hour special documenting Holmes' impact on real-life criminal investigation and upon forensic techniques. At a time when all that was needed to convict a criminal were eyewitness reports and blatant evidence, Holmes' method relied on more scientifically-based procedures, including fingerprinting, chemical, and blood stain identification. As forensic scientist Dr. Henry Lee once stated,"Sherlock Holmes is the grandfather of forensic science," and this special attempts to justify that claim.<br />

Through the use of compelling archival material and reconstruction, <b><i>How Sherlock Changed the World</i></b> tells the true stories of the scientists, detectives and even criminals who were inspired or influenced by the legend of Holmes. The special will also assess the history of Holmes’ techniques from the 1880s to the present, showing how the scientific techniques Holmes introduced to the world have evolved into the stunning CSI-style forensic labs of <a href="http://www.met.police.uk/about/branches/">Scotland Yard</a> and the <a href="http://www.fbi.gov/">FBI</a>."</blockquote>
Sherlockians live in a time when we have a diverse array of ways to enjoy Conan Doyle's tales of detection, from the straightforward adaptation of the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b018ttws">BBC's <b><i>Sherlock</i></b></a> to the action-adventure oriented movies of Guy Ritchie to the more procedural, redemptive approach of <a href="http://www.cbs.com/shows/elementary/">CBS' <b><i>Elementary</i></b></a>. Thankfully, we now have an additional opportunity to experience Holmes' impact on how we approach law enforcement and investigation, and prove once again that Holmes' method is not only learnable and applicable, but ultimately, has had a greater impact on our society....perhaps more than we can imagine.<br />

To Sherlockians, It Is Always 'The' Weekend

Which is why those of us who have been going or who have heard about it for years are always thrilled to see the invitation arrive in the mail.<br />

An email we received from Susan Rice, BSI, 2s, ASH ("Beeswing") and Mickey Fromkin, BSI, ASH ("The Missing Three-Quarter") for the William Gillette Luncheon summed it up nicely:<br />

Of course, the BSI Dinner for many is the signature event, with its invitation-only status. And while it may be tempting <a href="http://sherlockpeoria.blogspot.com/2013/11/its-bsi-invitation-charlie-brown.html" target="_blank">to sulk for those who don't receive an invitation</a> to BSI Dinner, it's important to note that <a href="http://www.bsiweekend.com/2013/11/master-schedule-of-events.html#sthash.cMSZvNDi.dpbs" target="_blank"><i>the</i> Weekend lasts from Wednesday to Sunday</a> and that there is only a single event that is closed to the public. Which is one of the reasons we call bsiweekend.com the <b>Baker Street Irregulars <u>and Friends</u> Weekend</b>.</div>

And frankly, for us, the attraction of the festivities has never been solely about the BSI Dinner. The first time we attended the dinner, it was pretty exciting, but each successive year, it's been about the entire experience of the full weekend - traveling there with friends, seeing familiar faces from a year ago, meeting up with regulars (and Irregulars), exchanging stories about families, jobs, hobbies and more. It's about cavorting with our fellow Sherlockians, regardless of who has an invitation to which dinner.</div>

<a href="http://bsiweekend.com/" target="_blank">The BSI and Friends Weekend</a> site and the <i><a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/bsiweekend.html" target="_blank">Baker Street Journal</a></i> site each have information related to the activities that will be taking place in New York City in January 2014. The Sherlock Holmes Canon is a textbook of friendship. With a relationship that spans at least 33 years - from their first meeting in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> in 1881, to standing on the terrace with each other at the conclusion of "His Last Bow" in 1914 - the colleagues and erstwhile flatmates grew to appreciate each other's talents.</div>
