Redmond, one of the more prolific Sherlockians of his generation. He is best known in many quarters for his two scholarly books — <i><a href="https://affiliates.abebooks.com/c/2670720/77416/2029?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.abebooks.com%2Fservlet%2FSearchResults%3Fkn%3DSherlock%2520Holmes%252C%2520a%2520Study%2520in%2520Sources%26sts%3Dt%26cm_sp%3DSearchF-_-topnav-_-Results%26ds%3D20" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes, a Study in Sources</a></i> and <i><a href="https://affiliates.abebooks.com/c/2670720/77416/2029?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.abebooks.com%2Fservlet%2FSearchResults%3Fkn%3DSherlock%2520Holmes%2520Among%2520the%2520Pirates%26sts%3Dt%26cm_sp%3DSearchF-_-topnav-_-Results" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes Among the Pirates</a></i> — but he wrote much more as well, including articles in Canadian, British and American journals and newsletters over four decades.<div>  <br />I have been working lately to compile a bibliography of his writings, and then assemble an anthology to make some of the gems available to today's Sherlockians. I know I haven't found everything he wrote (and I never will), but there are at least 250 discrete items, from technical research to Sherlockian "grand game" speculation and some fragments of flippant verse: <br /><br /></div><div><blockquote>I suspect of Sherlockians very few<br /> Excepting John Clay (perhaps Merridew)<br />   Can tell at a glance<br />   At the knees of their pants<br /> A tired old limerick from a clerihew. </blockquote><br /><br /></div><div>That one was typewritten on a recycled catalogue card, and never published — just as his essay "The Case of the Builders Bodies", identifying some sources for the plot of "The Norwood Builder", apparently never saw print. Some day maybe it will, along with a sheaf of others. <br /><br /></div><div>Shortly after my father's death in 2014, I wrote <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/11/remembering-donald-redmond-bsi-2s.html#.YnfWFS0ZOxA" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">a summary of his life and Sherlockian career</a> for I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere<br /><br />A chemistry graduate of Mount Allison University, he went on to study library science at McGill University and the University of Illinois, and worked in library administration in Nova Scotia, Ceylon, Turkey and Kansas (where we both caught the Sherlockian bug) before becoming chief librarian of Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, 1966-77. Railways, Meccano, and church administration and history were among his enthusiasms in addition to Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle.</div><div>  <br />He was admitted to the Baker Street Irregulars in 1969, with the title "Good Old Index" in recognition of his work as an indexer. A Two-Shilling Award from the BSI followed. </div><div><br /></div><div>His first major Sherlockian index, covering <i>The Baker Street Journal</i> from 1946 to 1969, appeared in 1970, and he continued to index the <i>BSJ</i>, with cumulations, until 2012. Other indexes followed, knocked out on a series of manual and then electric typewriters — he never had the slightest desire to touch a computer. </div><div><br /></div><div>And then there was <a href="https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/books-video-music/specialized-collections/literature-genre-doyle.jsp" target="_blank">the Bigelow Index at the Toronto Reference Library</a>, an attempt to index the universe of Sherlockian literature, launched in the 1960s by S. Tupper Bigelow and carried on by my father as a volunteer.</div><div>  <br />The volume of words he knocked out on those typewriters was immense: those indexes and books, cards for the Bigelow Index, articles, verses, quizzes, and even one or two parodies, not to mention correspondence. </div><div><br /></div><div>To take just one example, in the late 1990s he was conducting what amounted to a monthly column for the <i>Baker Street Dispatch</i>, a newsletter out of Ohio. One of those columns took its title from a phrase in "The Musgrave Ritual": "Month After Month His Papers Accumulated." In it, my father described a little of his methods of indexing:</div><div>  <br /></div><blockquote><div>"The Sherlockian periodicals flow steadily into the mailbox, and when the in-tray is full, seldom before, I set to with index cards, thesaurus of Sherlockian subjects, and typewriter, to bring some semblance of order out of the Sherlockian Chaos. When the tray has been reduced so that the inward flow will not submerge my desk, I transfer the cards to the Metropolitan Toronto Reference Library (some 160 miles away) and the Sherlockiana itself (themselves?) to the file tray. There it further mellows until it too threatens to overflow, and I reluctantly set about to dispose of it somehow.</div><div>  <br />"Nominally the disposal is to a filing cabinet, alphabetized almost as arcanely as Jabez Wilson's volume of the <i>Britannica</i>, from Abbots to Architecture and on to the Van Herder Airguns (compare with the V entries in Holmes's own index) and the <i>Whitechapel Gazette</i> and the Wigmore Street Post Office. <br /><br />"But the filing cabinet is full. It is always full. It always has been full."</div></blockquote><div></div><div>  <br />So are the bookshelves, he added, especially when he had handfuls of newsletters converted into bound volumes. </div><div></div><blockquote><div>"I am not a successor to John Bennett Shaw; I know that what gathers is not a complete collection of Sherlockiana, and I have no interest in its being such. I could not afford to make it complete; the prices attached by dealers to items lacking in this collection could readily be attached to choice items for sale out of Windsor Castle.</div><div><br /></div><div>"But I think there is an eventual value to this collecting. How few are now and will in future be the collections which reflect, not the outstanding gems of the annals of Sherlock Holmes, but the ceaseless activity, energy and enthusiasm of the almost countless Sherlockian devotees, and societies of devotees, who are actively keeping green the Master's memory. <br /><br /></div><div>"There is too a real danger that the wheel will be endlessly re-invented, unless the endless bits of scholarship, the grains of knowledge carried by countless Sherlockian ants, are in some way collected and stored. There will always be a need for collections of papers, and for indexes to them."</div></blockquote><div></div><div>  <br />I have the filing cabinet now, though the Toronto library has its contents and will someday have all these manuscripts I have been wrangling. In it, he discussed the entirety of the Sherlock Holmes canon, plus two apocryphal tales.</p><p>But Dakin also acknowledged that he was probably missing the discovery of scholarship that had happened prior to his time. Bruce Harris, in his <i>Anticipations in D. Martin Dakin’s A Sherlock Holmes Commentary</i>, digs deeper into the older scholarship and has found earlier commentary on the points that interested Dakin.</p><p>This is a fine companion volume to a cornerstone of Sherlockian scholarship. Review: Mr Doyle's Class Presents A Study in Scarlet

The goal is to introduce the novel, originally written in Portsmouth, to readers of all ages. </p><p>A group of present-day schoolchildren are learning about <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>. Under Mr. Doyle's direction, they're staging it as a play. Through the magic of imagination, the kids meet the originals, with the incorporation of the classic train car image from "Silver Blaze" in which Sherlock Holmes, in deerstalker and caped coat, explains to Dr. John Watson. </p><p>The comic format is used gracefully. The book opens with the modern-dressed kids peering around a Victorian street as snatches of dialogue float by. This illustrates the clash of cultures and times while still putting the reader in the center of the action. The current characters are drawn against classic settings, the blend making the story feel fresh. </p><p>The colors are all shades of a soft red. Although monochrome, the variety of tones adds depth to the art. The teacher is used to clarify some artistic choices. </p><p>The setting, on the stage, allows for focus on the most famous or most exciting moments, while stepping back, as necessary, to set context. For example, Sherlock Holmes is played by Scarlet Achary. Another student complains that Sherlock Holmes should be a boy, only to be told, "This is a play... Anyone can be anything they want." In a story about imagination, that's a welcome piece of advice. </p><p>The Utah section is abbreviated, accompanied by original illustrations, and summed up with the children concluding that anyone who doesn't listen to a woman's wishes is a creep. That's a nice way to highlight the still-relevant messages from this long-ago tale of revenge. </p><p>My only complaint is that the lettering is awfully small. The stories evoke city life.</div><div><br /></div><div>And yet, we find a few instances of farm life that creeps into the tales from time to time.</div><div><br /></div><div>Consider the very first time the public met Holmes in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>: we're taken to a place very different from London: the Great Alkalai plain and eventually to Utah, where John Ferrier sets up as...a farmer. He eventually became "the richest of the farmers," making his daughter Lucy an attractive object for many a suitor.</div><div><br /></div><div>Next, we find Jonathan Small recounting his tale in <i>The Sign of Four</i>, expressing how different he was from his family:</div><blockquote><div>"They were all steady, chapel-going folk, small farmers, well known and respected over the country-side, while I was always a bit of a rover."</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>It isn't until we reach stories in The Return of Sherlock Holmes that we encounter farmers again. In "The Dancing Men," we discover that Norfolk farmers are something of a Victorian Airbnb: "And the farmers take in lodgers."  </div><div><br /></div><div>And then there are the few "moor farmers" who rear sheep and cattle in "The Priory School," and "two moorland farmers" in <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Anyone who's familiar with farming — at least the agricultural type — has heard of bushels and pecks as a form of volumetric measurement. However, we don't seem to encounter a single instance of those in the Canon, even from young Francis Prosper, the greengrocer in "The Beryl Coronet."</div><div><br /></div><div>The Baker Street Irregulars do have a peck, though: Andrew J. Peck ("Inspector Baynes, Surrey Constabulary"), who made a very different measurement in his scholarship: a chronology of the 60 stories, published together with Les Klinger, BSI ("The Abbey Grange"), titled <i><a href="https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail.jsp?Entt=RDM365052&R=365052" target="_blank">"The Date Being—?" What a rag-bag of singular happenings! But surely the most valuable hunting-ground that ever was given to a student of the unusual!</span><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">”</span></blockquote></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">In "The Three Garridebs," Holmes recommended that John Garrideb use such a resource for finding his quarry:</span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"><div></div><blockquote><div>“I should have thought, sir, that your obvious way was to advertise in the agony columns of the papers.”</div><div>“I have done that, Mr. Holmes. No replies.”</div></blockquote></span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">Of course, Holmes scanned the columns daily, so if something so unusual were to appear, he would have certainly seen it and added it to his clippings.</span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;">Nor was Holmes averse to personal communication to achieve his goals. In "The Solitary Cyclist," he chided Watson for missing an obvious opportunity to gather intelligence:</span></div><div><span style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 16px;"><div>“What should I have done?” I cried, with some heat.</div><blockquote><div>“Gone to the nearest public-house. That is the centre of country gossip. (The ACD Collection officially opened late in 1971, and the Bootmakers became a thing a few months later.) <br /><br /> The Bootmakers will co-sponsor the Jubilee event along with the <a href="http://acdfriends.org" target="_blank">Friends of the ACD Collection</a>, a group that raises money and awareness as a unit of the Toronto Public Library Foundation. <br /><br /><br /><br /> The Friends were in the spotlight a few months ago, when (for the second year in a row) their flagship event, the <b>Cameron Hollyer Memorial Lecture</b>, took place online because of public health restrictions. The speaker was playwright Jeffrey Hatcher, who has put Sherlock Holmes on the stage more than once, was invested in the Baker Street Irregulars in 2018 as "The Five Orange Pips," and incidentally gave <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2017/06/the-2016-bsi-dinner.html" target="_blank">another major lecture</a>, this one for the BSI itself, in New York in January 2016. <br /><br /><br /><br /> The Friends event has been a fixture for more than twenty years now, but this year I noticed that not a great deal was said on the Zoom presentation about Cameron Hollyer himself, whose name it honors. He was also a Sherlockian scholar of note, a friend to just about everyone who crossed his path, and such a representative of Sherlock Holmes that when Colorado State University decided to award Mr. Holmes an honorary degree, Cameron was invited to show up (in deerstalker and Inverness) to accept it on his behalf. <br /><br /> Said one tribute in <i><a href="https://www.torontobootmakers.com/canadian-holmes/" target="_blank">Canadian Holmes</a></i>, the magazine of the Bootmakers of Toronto, in 1991: </div><blockquote><div>"Though he has never been our president — for it seems generally acknowledged that his talents lie elsewhere than in administrative efficiency — he has always been our presiding genius."</div></blockquote><div><br /></div><div>His many contributions were traced by several writers in that issue of <i>Canadian Holmes</i> on the occasion of his retirement, as well as in his own reminiscence, "The Curator's Egg," an informal history of the Toronto collection. </div><div><br /></div><div>Born in 1926, he joined the staff of the Toronto library as a young man, and in 1969 was involved in the inspired decision to form an Arthur Conan Doyle collection, as well as the 1971 <b>Weekend with Sherlock Holmes</b> that launched it. </div><div><br /></div><div>He was subsequently not only an influential Bootmaker but a respected figure across the Sherlockian world, known for his gentle humour, his kindness, his way with words, and his vast knowledge. <br /><br /> When I had the opportunity to give the Cameron Hollyer Memorial Lecture at the Toronto library in 2005, I said a few words about the man whose name it bears:</div><blockquote><div>"It is not easy, for me at least, to separate the atmosphere of the Arthur Conan Doyle Room here from the image of Cameron Hollyer, tall, stooped and tobacco-stained, ready with information and anecdote and literary allusion. He once told a story of a visitor, not exactly one of the initiates, who wandered into the ACD Room, spotted Cameron and asked in something like awe, 'Are you Arthur Conan Doyle?' Cameron, who did not like to say no to anybody, decided to temporize. 'What does it say on the door?' he asked, and the visitor nodded in satisfaction — and, fortunately, wandered out again. <br /><br /> "Cameron did not look like the broad and beefy Conan Doyle, or share his booming voice and sporting tastes, and it is something of a wonder that Cameron ended up specializing in the life and work of a man so unlike him.
