Have you been to the <a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/">Baker Street Journal</a> Web site recently? Last year, we redesigned it so that it was more user-friendly and a little better looking. We tried to give it a little variety by selecting images that were either visually or topically tied to the subject on the page.<br />
<br />
If you haven't had a look, now is your chance. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Until March 21 - the first day of spring - we're running a contest which will make you eligible to receive an entire year of the Journal, plus a Christmas Annual, for free</span>.<br />

Here's how the contest will work:</h4>
On the <a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/">BSJ Web site</a> are images that run across <span style="font-style: italic;">the top of the page</span>; some of these are Canonical - that is, they are illustrations from within the pages of the original stories.  There are 14 different illustrations from the Canon.<br />
<ul>
<li>Submit the name of the page on the BSJ site and the story from which its corresponding image is taken (e.g., Home Page, Name of Story)</li>
<li>Contest closes at 12:01 p.m. on March 21</li>
<li>Only one entry per person</li>
<li>3 winners will be selected at random from all submitted entries that contain the correct 14 stories</li>
<li>Current BSJ subscribers may elect to extend their subscription one year or to give away a subscription to an individual or institution</li>

Known mostly for the comedy series <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moody_and_Pegg">Moody & Pegg</a> and his work on the stage, he has a few connections to the world of Sherlock Holmes.  He played Henri Fournaye in the BBC TV production of "The Second Stain" with Peter Cushing.  He played Dr. Watson in Leslie Bricusse's short-lived "Sherlock Holmes - The Musical."<br />

In 1903, Thomas Edison produced the film in which Sherlock Holmes made his debut on the silver screen.  The silent film, just under a minute in length, was called <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eO3EbFG0ak">Sherlock Holmes Baffled</a> and we have the pleasure to share it with you here.<br />

This is the first of a couple of travel-related posts that we'd like to share with you.  For Sherlockians willing to travel (or lucky enough to live in areas with active societies or related events), there is never a dearth of activity.<br />

For those of you living in or traveling to the Mid-Atlantic area of the eastern United States, you should be aware that Cape May, NJ is holding its annual <a href="http://www.capemaymac.org/Tours-Events/Holmes/sherlockholmes.htm">Sherlock Holmes Weekend</a> from March 2-4, 2007 and again from November 2-4, 2007:<br />

Every Sherlockian we have met (and we tend to "work a room" pretty effectively at events) has his or her personal favorite Holmes and Watson pairing from the silver screen or small screen.  And invariably, I find that the emotional attachment is linked to a first exposure to Holmes.<br />
<br />
For example, there are many Sherlockians - of varying generations - who first discovered the Holmes of the screen through <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&keywords=Rathbone%20Sherlock%20Holmes&tag=thebakerstree-20&index=dvd&amp;amp;amp;linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325">Basil Rathbone</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /> and will not be swayed from thinking that he is the best Holmes to occupy celluloid. In February 2007, we discovered the blog of <a href="http://ernie-gilbert.blogspot.com/index.html">Ernie Gilbert</a>, an animation designer / art director.  He works on the animated show <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fairly_OddParents"><i>The Fairly OddParents</i></a>, which is second in popularity on Nickolodeon only to SpongeBob Squarepants. Fans of the show may be aware that he depicted Sherlock Holmes in one of the episodes.<br />

In this posting, we're violating an unspoken rule put in place for the blog.  Once we began using post titles that were Canonical quotes, we vowed to find a unique quote for every entry.  In this case, we're at a loss - how often do you come up against a Sherlock Holmes-related mustard story?<br />

Fans of Sherlock Holmes and of the stage will no doubt be saddened and shocked to learn of the death of <a href="http://imdb.com/name/nm0007183/">Ian Richardson</a> [IMBD profile]. Richardson, known for his sonorous voice and commanding presence died suddenly at the age of 72.  Details of his death <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6346301.stm">are available from the BBC</a>.<br />
<br />
Personally, we have to admit that we're devastated — Richardson was a favorite British actor.<br />
<br />
Hailing from Edinburgh, just like Conan Doyle, Richardson is known to Sherlockians for his portrayal of the great detective in two films, <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3Jinzhk">The Sign of Four</a> </i><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;l=ur2&o=1" style="border: medium none; margin: 0px;" width="1" />and <a href="https://amzn.to/3JlnoSh"><i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i></a>; he also portrayed Joseph Bell, the medical professor of Conan Doyle who served as the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes, in <a href="https://amzn.to/3rbSUfo"><i>Murder Rooms - The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B000EXZFRG" style="border: medium none; margin: 0px;" width="1" />.<br />
<br />
The role for which he'll probably be remembered best is that of Francis Urquart ("F.U.") in <a href="https://amzn.to/3JlkjBw"><i>The House of Cards</i> trilogy</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;l=ur2&o=1" style="border: medium none; margin: 0px;" width="1" />.  He based his portrayal on Richard III and deliciously includes the audience in his Machiavellian scheming to rise to and maintain his position as Prime Minister.<br />

It was just last week on "The Best of Masterpiece Theatre" — a countdown of the top 12 shows as voted by viewers — that he made an appearance related to House of Cards.<br />

There are quite a few of us who are scratching our heads at <a href="http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/other/display.var.1173860.0.0.php" style="font-weight: bold;">the latest developments with Undershaw</a>, the one-time home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.<br />

You can read <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/07/you-have-seen-pictures-and-read_6.html#.VqvJWPkrLb0" rel="nofollow">our original post on the matter</a> from last July, as well as a post that contained <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/07/us-now-see-letter-twis_20.html" rel="nofollow">a letter from a number of scholars</a> imploring that English Heritage grant Undershaw Grade II status to protect it as an historical landmark.<br />
<br />
Evidently Tessa Jowell, the Culture Minister thinks that the house is not worthy because Conan Doyle - how did she put it - does not occupy  a "position in the nation's consciousness."  No, certainly not with Sherlock Holmes being named as <a href="http://www.icons.org.uk/theicons/collection/collection/sherlock-holmes">one of the U.K.'s cultural icons</a>. Nor with Conan Doyle being the J.K. Rowling of his day. Nor with a Tube station decked out in Sherlock Holmes illustrations.<br />

Richard D. Lesh, BSI ("The Fatal Battle of Maiwand") has crossed over the Reichenbach. He was a holder of the BSI's prestigious Two-Shilling Award, given for service above and beyond the norm to the Irregulars, and also a member of the Master's Masons.  Hailing from Fort Collins, CO <a href="http://www.coloradoan.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007702030363">his obituary is available</a> from <span style="font-style: italic;">The Coloradan</span>.  I have reproduced it here:<br /><blockquote><span class="bodytext"><p>Richard D. Lesh passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Centre Avenue Health and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born May 3, 1927, in Grand Island, Neb., to Ethel Darling and Charles Wesley Lesh.</p><p>He grew up in Omaha and graduated from Benson High School in 1945. Following graduation from the University of Denver, he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn White, on June 19, 1949. They lived in Denver while he completed his master's degree at the University of Denver, and he accepted a position as an art instructor at Wayne State College in Nebraska in 1951. Together, they raised five children in Wayne, until he retired to Fort Collins in 1982.</p><p>He was a Master Mason, Scottish Rite Mason, a member of El Jebel Shrine and a Jester. He was also an active member of the Baker Street Irregulars, an international Sherlock Holmes Society. These are reproductions of the original stories as they appeared in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Strand Magazine</span>, beginning with "The Adventure of the Empty House" and continuing with 11 additional titles. Well, the first issue arrived last week and it looks fantastic. The previous run, while faithful to the original layout of the <span style="font-style: italic;">Strand</span>, was made of newsprint, which made the images a little muted and felt cheap. After the raging success of the subscriptions, Stanford is charging $20 for the set of 12, including postage. With higher quality paper inside and a glossy cover, it's well worth it. The Paget drawings are crisp and clear and the piece feels substantial.<br />

Sherlock Holmes returned to Watson after a hiatus of three years (the "Great Hiatus," as Sherlockians know it), with tales of travels across Asia and Europe.  As he recounts it:<br />

You may have read of the remarkable explorations of a Norwegian named     Sigerson, but I am sure that it never occurred to you that you were receiving news of your     friend. I then passed through Persia, looked in at Mecca, and paid a short but interesting     visit to the Khalifa at Khartoum, the results of which I have communicated to the Foreign     Office. Returning to France, I spent some months in a research into the coal-tar     derivatives, which I conducted in a laboratory at Montpellier, in the south of France."</blockquote>

With over 5,000 events scheduled across the continent, it is the largest celebration of Australia's existence.<br />

As you may know, Conan Doyle was a world traveler, and one of his journeys took him to the former penal colony.  Even before making what must have been an excruciatingly long trip, he managed to to put a number of connections to the island continent in the Canon. Here are the ones that come to mind:<br />

<li><a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/bosc.htm">The Boscombe Valley Mystery</a> - "<span style="font-style: italic;">from Ballarat to Melbourne</span>" - Turner and McCarthy met in Australia, where Black Jack of Ballarat made his money as a highway robber</li>
<li><a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/glor.htm">The <span style="font-style: italic;">Gloria Scott</span></a> - Trevor Sr., alias James Armitage was "<span style="font-style: italic;">sentenced to transportation</span>" and found himself "<span style="font-style: italic;">bound for Australia</span>" aboard the ill-fated ship when he encountered Jack Prendergast, Hudson and others.</li>
<li><a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/empt.htm">The Empty House</a> - the Hon. Ronald Adair was the son of the Earl of Maynooth, "<span style="font-style: italic;">governor of one of the Australian colonies. Adair’s mother had     returned from Australia to undergo the operation for cataract</span>" when they moved to Park Lane.</li>
<li><a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/prio.htm">The Priory School</a> - at the conclusion, James Wilder was to leave the Duke of Holderness "<span style="font-style: italic;">and go to seek his fortune in Australia</span>."</li>
<li><a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/abbe.htm">The Abbey Grange</a> - Mary Frasier and Theresa Wright came from "<span style="font-style: italic;">the less conventional atmosphere of South Australia</span>" - Adelaide, to be exact</li>
<li><a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/lady.htm">The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax</a> - Holy Peters turned out to be "<span style="font-style: italic;">one of the most unscrupulous rascals that     Australia has ever evolved</span>."</li>
</ul>
While these are the only overt references to Australia that I can remember off the top of my head, there are other entries that might imply  a connection with the land down under:<br />
<ul>
<li>Holmes doesn't say where in <a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/suss.htm">The Sussex Vampire</a>, but "<span style="font-style: italic;">a year at sea</span>" for Master Jacky Ferguson might include Australia</li>
<li>Watson wrote that his experience of women extended "<span style="font-style: italic;">over three separate continents</span>" in <a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/sign-02.htm" style="font-style: italic;">The Sign of the Four</a>; might one of those continents included the island nation?</li>
</ul>
It's a lovely country with fascinating people - a unique mix of American, British and Pan-Asian cultures over a wide variety of landscapes.  When I traveled there in 1997, I was treated like royalty by the <a href="http://www.sherlock.on.net/">Sydney Passengers</a>. If you ever have the chance to visit this great country, by all means, go.<br />

At the conclusion of the Baker Street Irregulars Distinguished Speaker Lecture earlier this month, we wrote a quick reaction to and summary of Laurie King's talk (<a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2007/01/should-like-to-see-mrs-king-danc_11.html#.WHsndvkrLb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">"I Should Like To See Mrs. King"</a>), as a Sherlockian who was lucky enough to attend. If you've been following my little entries, I hope I've given you a taste of the "blogsophere" and how it works.<br />

As luck would have it, Ms. King is a fellow blogger and has posted her own reminiscence, titled <a href="http://laurierking.blogspot.com/2007/01/holmes-and-king.html">Holmes and King</a> on her blog. Here is a brief excerpt of her reaction to receiving an invitation from <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/liveonline/style/books/dirdaonbooks/">Michael Dirda</a> to speak during the BSI Weekend:<br />

Wow.  Another BSI Weekend has come and gone. Every year, we await the festivities - particularly in the months between the invitation and the events - with great anticipation and excitement, akin to a child in the weeks and days before Christmas.  And then, before you know it, the wrapping paper is strewn all over the floor, the meat trimmings are sitting on the platter, guests have left, and you're wondering where the holiday went.<br />

We'll be adding a few separate entries to follow up, but suffice it to say that the weekend was a great success. Here are are a couple of Baker Street Irregulars and <i>Baker Street Journal</i> news items for now.<br />

Also, the Morley-Montogmery Award recipient was announced on Thursday evening at a reception just prior to the lecture.  The winner for the best article appearing in the Journal in 2006 is Harold Billings, for his piece <a href="http://bakerstreetjournal.com/morleymontgomeryaward/currentwinner.html" style="font-weight: bold;">The <span style="font-style: italic;">Materia Medica</span> of Sherlock Holmes</a>.  Congratulations, Harold.<br />
