It seems that Conan Doyle is in the news again, and all for the wrong reasons. Earlier this week it was the news that a Sherlock Holmes comic would inspire a new movie (check the Shared Articles in the right column below for rumors on who might play Holmes).<br />

This time, <a href="http://www.scotsman.com/lifestyle/culture/the-classic-whodunnit-did-arthur-conan-doyle-plot-the-murder-of-harry-houdini-1-692395" target="_blank">Conan Doyle's name is being mentioned</a> in connection with the death of Harry Houdini. It seems that a relative of Houdini's wants his body exhumed for examination, to determine if he was murdered. This subject came up last year, when the biography <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0743272072?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0743272072"><i>The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0743272072" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> was released. As you may know, Houdini died of a ruptured appendix after receiving a blow to the abdomen when he wasn't properly prepared.<br />
<br />
But because of Houdini's work on debunking frauds, the Spiritualists didn't appreciate his work. The book, which I believe was the impetus behind Houdini's great-nephew pushing for the autopsy, claimed that the Spiritualists essentially put out a hit on Houdini and that Doyle was one of the instigators.<br />
<br />
Pure sensationalism, if you ask us. And using Conan Doyle's name in connection with it is pure showmanship. Ironic, but Houdini, the master showman, would probably approve of the publicity method, were he alive.<br />

This comes from the sad, but true department. If you've been lucky enough to attend the Baker Street Irregulars' <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/04/prime-favorite-with-racing-public-silv_14.html#.WDiWavkrLb0">Silver Blaze</a> festivities every other year, you are probably familiar with <a href="http://www.professormoriartys.com/ABOUT.HTM">Professor Moriarty's</a> restaurant.  Well, the next time you walk in, be sure to say<br />

Because Professor Moriarty's is being sold. According to <a href="http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=573495&category=BUSINESS&BCCode=&newsdate=3/20/2007">the article from the Albany Times-Union</a>, "The 23-year-old restaurant and tavern, known for its cozy cherry-wood walls and English pub-like ambience, will be purchased by a former California businessman who wants to open <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">an upscale Mexican eatery</span>."<br />

To which we can only say, "Ai yai yai!" We have to wonder if they're working on renaming the entrees?  Here are a few suggestions:<br />

It's all over the news and the blogosphere today: Warner Brothers is bringing an upcoming Sherlock Holmes comic book to the big screen. It's being reported by the <a href="http://blogs.nypost.com/movies/archives/2007/03/and_michael_cai.html">New York Post</a>, the <a href="http://www.themovieblog.com/archives/2007/03/sherlock_holmes.html">Movie Blog</a>, and <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117961256.html?categoryid=13&cs=1">Variety.com</a>, which wrote:<br />

"Exact storyline is being kept under wraps, but creative execs at Warners say they are looking for the "Sherlock" team to reinvent the sleuth and his loyal No. 2 Dr. Watson in much the same edgy way that Christopher Nolan has reimagined Batman for Warners."</blockquote>
Interesting. This could be a big break for the Sherlockian world, bringing much-needed publicity to our hero.  The character received a revival in the 1970s, thanks to Nicholas Meyer's book and subsequent movie <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/6305078009?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=6305078009">The Seven Percent Solution</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=6305078009" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /></i>.<br />

<a href="http://www.themovieblog.com/archives/2007/03/sherlock_holmes.html">John Campea</a> aptly puts what we've known all along:<br />

We all know that Hollywood has taken liberties with the characters - Basil Rathbone as Holmes in the 1940s with Nigel Bruce as the bumbling Dr. Watson - but I wonder if they'll give us something closer to the true Holmes that we know.  Perhaps that's what they mean by "reinvent."<br />

Most of the activities there were geared toward my toddler, so there weren't any opportunities to tie in Sherlockian interests. No sign of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005T7H5?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00005T7H5">Basil of Baker Street,</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00005T7H5" style="border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /> alas.<br /><br />The last time I was there, I had the opportunity to stop in at the <a href="http://www.grosvenorresort.com/the_grosvenor.html">Grosvenor Resort</a>, which features a few Sherlockian-themed dining areas: <a href="http://www.grosvenorresort.com/baskervilles.html">Baskervilles</a>, a restaurant with 19th century decor and a Sherlock Holmes museum; and <a href="http://www.grosvenorresort.com/moriartys.html">Moriarty's</a>, an English-style pub.<br /><br />I should take my deerstalker with mouse ears (is that a mousestalker?) out for a photo some time...<br /><br />P.S. He sent me a copy and this is my review of the book after having read it to a test audience - my 3 1/2 year-old.<br />

This delightful book is illustrated with cute drawings that are very welcoming to children. The story, told in verse, is easy to follow and keeps the reader in suspense all the way to the ending, which thankfully, was a happy one.<br />
<br />
It concerns a mystery - who shot Saville Row and ripped Tiffany Ball Gown?  Along the way, we meet a variety of characters such as Rags, General Homestore Blazer, Poly Esther Dress and the gloves Fingers and Thumbs. The hero of the story, as you may have guessed, is a costume appropriately called Sherlock. There is a hint that there may be further adventures to come...<br />
<br />
According to a book review from <a href="http://www.childrenwebmag.com/content/view/268">Children's Webmag</a>, it's "an unusual book, but really good fun." The write that their readers - children - have had a very positive response to it:<br />

"[The children] loved the illustrations and the story  made them laugh out loud. Very entertaining for children and parents alike."</blockquote>

Every Sherlockian we have met (and we tend to "work a room" pretty effectively at events) has his or her personal favorite Holmes and Watson pairing from the silver screen or small screen.  And invariably, I find that the emotional attachment is linked to a first exposure to Holmes.<br />

In February 2007, we discovered the blog of <a href="http://ernie-gilbert.blogspot.com/index.html">Ernie Gilbert</a>, an animation designer / art director.  He works on the animated show <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fairly_OddParents"><i>The Fairly OddParents</i></a>, which is second in popularity on Nickolodeon only to SpongeBob Squarepants. Fans of the show may be aware that he depicted Sherlock Holmes in one of the episodes.<br />

In this posting, we're violating an unspoken rule put in place for the blog.  Once we began using post titles that were Canonical quotes, we vowed to find a unique quote for every entry.  In this case, we're at a loss - how often do you come up against a Sherlock Holmes-related mustard story?<br />

Fans of Sherlock Holmes and of the stage will no doubt be saddened and shocked to learn of the death of <a href="http://imdb.com/name/nm0007183/">Ian Richardson</a> [IMBD profile]. Richardson, known for his sonorous voice and commanding presence died suddenly at the age of 72.  Details of his death <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6346301.stm">are available from the BBC</a>.<br />
<br />
Personally, we have to admit that we're devastated — Richardson was a favorite British actor.<br />
<br />
Hailing from Edinburgh, just like Conan Doyle, Richardson is known to Sherlockians for his portrayal of the great detective in two films, <i><a href="https://amzn.to/3Jinzhk">The Sign of Four</a> </i><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;l=ur2&o=1" style="border: medium none; margin: 0px;" width="1" />and <a href="https://amzn.to/3JlnoSh"><i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i></a>; he also portrayed Joseph Bell, the medical professor of Conan Doyle who served as the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes, in <a href="https://amzn.to/3rbSUfo"><i>Murder Rooms - The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B000EXZFRG" style="border: medium none; margin: 0px;" width="1" />.<br />
<br />
The role for which he'll probably be remembered best is that of Francis Urquart ("F.U.") in <a href="https://amzn.to/3JlkjBw"><i>The House of Cards</i> trilogy</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;l=ur2&o=1" style="border: medium none; margin: 0px;" width="1" />.  He based his portrayal on Richard III and deliciously includes the audience in his Machiavellian scheming to rise to and maintain his position as Prime Minister.<br />

It was just last week on "The Best of Masterpiece Theatre" — a countdown of the top 12 shows as voted by viewers — that he made an appearance related to House of Cards.<br />

There are quite a few of us who are scratching our heads at <a href="http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/other/display.var.1173860.0.0.php" style="font-weight: bold;">the latest developments with Undershaw</a>, the one-time home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.<br />

You can read <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/07/you-have-seen-pictures-and-read_6.html#.VqvJWPkrLb0" rel="nofollow">our original post on the matter</a> from last July, as well as a post that contained <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/07/us-now-see-letter-twis_20.html" rel="nofollow">a letter from a number of scholars</a> imploring that English Heritage grant Undershaw Grade II status to protect it as an historical landmark.<br />
<br />
Evidently Tessa Jowell, the Culture Minister thinks that the house is not worthy because Conan Doyle - how did she put it - does not occupy  a "position in the nation's consciousness."  No, certainly not with Sherlock Holmes being named as <a href="http://www.icons.org.uk/theicons/collection/collection/sherlock-holmes">one of the U.K.'s cultural icons</a>. Nor with Conan Doyle being the J.K. Rowling of his day. Nor with a Tube station decked out in Sherlock Holmes illustrations.<br />

Richard D. Lesh, BSI ("The Fatal Battle of Maiwand") has crossed over the Reichenbach. He was a holder of the BSI's prestigious Two-Shilling Award, given for service above and beyond the norm to the Irregulars, and also a member of the Master's Masons.  Hailing from Fort Collins, CO <a href="http://www.coloradoan.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007702030363">his obituary is available</a> from <span style="font-style: italic;">The Coloradan</span>.  I have reproduced it here:<br /><blockquote><span class="bodytext"><p>Richard D. Lesh passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Centre Avenue Health and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born May 3, 1927, in Grand Island, Neb., to Ethel Darling and Charles Wesley Lesh.</p><p>He grew up in Omaha and graduated from Benson High School in 1945. Following graduation from the University of Denver, he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn White, on June 19, 1949. They lived in Denver while he completed his master's degree at the University of Denver, and he accepted a position as an art instructor at Wayne State College in Nebraska in 1951. Together, they raised five children in Wayne, until he retired to Fort Collins in 1982.</p><p>He was a Master Mason, Scottish Rite Mason, a member of El Jebel Shrine and a Jester. He was also an active member of the Baker Street Irregulars, an international Sherlock Holmes Society. These are reproductions of the original stories as they appeared in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Strand Magazine</span>, beginning with "The Adventure of the Empty House" and continuing with 11 additional titles. The series is <a href="http://sherlockholmes.stanford.edu/readings.html">available for download here</a>; there are also <a href="http://sherlockholmes.stanford.edu/2007/notes1_1.html">story notes here</a>.<br />

Well, the first issue arrived last week and it looks fantastic. The previous run, while faithful to the original layout of the <span style="font-style: italic;">Strand</span>, was made of newsprint, which made the images a little muted and felt cheap. After the raging success of the subscriptions, Stanford is charging $20 for the set of 12, including postage. With higher quality paper inside and a glossy cover, it's well worth it. The Paget drawings are crisp and clear and the piece feels substantial.<br />

Sherlock Holmes returned to Watson after a hiatus of three years (the "Great Hiatus," as Sherlockians know it), with tales of travels across Asia and Europe.  As he recounts it:<br />

You may have read of the remarkable explorations of a Norwegian named     Sigerson, but I am sure that it never occurred to you that you were receiving news of your     friend. I then passed through Persia, looked in at Mecca, and paid a short but interesting     visit to the Khalifa at Khartoum, the results of which I have communicated to the Foreign     Office. Returning to France, I spent some months in a research into the coal-tar     derivatives, which I conducted in a laboratory at Montpellier, in the south of France."</blockquote>
