Sherlock Holmes owed much to Edgar Allan Poe's detective, the <b>Chevalier Auguste Dupin</b>, though he didn't like to admit it. "You remind me of Dupin," Watson tells him in <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, only to receive the arrogant reply that "In my opinion, Dupin was a very inferior fellow." <br />
<br />
Arthur Conan Doyle, creating the bumptious young Holmes as he wrote <i>A Study in Scarlet</i> in 1886, obviously had read Poe's detective tales (the first of them being "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," 1841) and been influenced by them. His most famous acknowledgement of that debt came in 1912 in the snappish verse "To an Undiscerning Critic," where he admitted Holmes's disdain for Dupin but maintained his own admiration for Poe:<br />

He, the created, would scoff and would sneer,<br />
Where I, the Creator, would bow and revere.</blockquote>

Conan Doyle had more to say about his debt to Poe in other contexts, particularly his 1907 book <i>Through the Magic Door</i>, where he labels Poe "the supreme original short story writer of all time" and his tales of Dupin the source of all the detective stories that have followed. <i>Through the Magic Door</i> was based on a series of articles about writers that Doyle produced in 1894, under the title "Before My Bookcase," but it is interesting to note that his comments on Poe are entirely new. The 1894 series made no mention of his supposed master at all.<br />
<br />
Those articles were published in May and June of 1894, and a few weeks later Doyle was on his way to America, where he carried out an intensive lecture tour. My book about that tour, and the places and people Doyle encountered, appeared in 1987 under the title <i><a href="https://www.dundurn.com/books/welcome-america-mr-sherlock-holmes" target="_blank">Welcome to America, Mr. Sherlock Holmes</a></i>, and contains a mass of information — much of it, I believe, reasonably accurate.<br />

I had no reason to think the chapter about the events of November 6, 1894, was any less accurate than the rest of the book, until I received an email message from a Baltimore historian, <b>Fred Shoken</b>, who delicately asked what evidence I had for that part of my narrative, since he hadn't been able to find any in the newspapers where it might have been expected.<br />
<br />
According to my chapter, November 6 — which was also Election Day — was the day Arthur Conan Doyle visited Baltimore, presumably to deliver the same lecture ("Readings and Reminiscences") that he had been giving in cities up and down the eastern United States, including Washington the night before. In addition, I wrote at some length, Doyle paid a visit to the grave of Edgar Allan Poe at the Westminster Burying Ground on West Fayette Street. <br />
<br />
Such events would surely have been mentioned in the papers, as Doyle's doings were publicized wherever he went during that tour. But the <i>Sun</i> (still Baltimore's chief newspaper) and the <i>American </i>(whose successor ceased publication in 1986) made no reference to the distinguished British visitor, as Shoken pointed out to me. Naturally I hoped I had based my chapter on a report in some other newspaper that Shoken had simply overlooked.<br />
<br />
No such luck. I consulted my files from the 1980s, made up mostly of correspondence with newspapers and local historians, and slick, faded prints from microfilm. (You're not familiar with microfilm? Oh, you're from a younger generation of researchers than I am.) For the past decade or more, it would have been hard for me to consult these records, because many of my files have been in a storage unit, but in preparation for the 300-mile move to my new home, I got everything out and organized, so the relevant file was easy to find. And what do you know: no newspaper references at all to a Baltimore visit by Conan Doyle.<br />
<br />
I reread the chapter I had written, and began to realize that it was phrased very vaguely. Clearly I assumed that there had been a Baltimore visit and a Baltimore lecture, but I avoided saying so explicitly because I had no confirmation and certainly no details. As for the pilgrimage to Poe's grave — well, where did I get that idea exactly? <br />
<br />
I still don't know, and there seems to be no evidence of it. It just feels like one of those things I've always known. In fact I turned confidently to Conan Doyle's autobiography, <i>Memories and Adventures</i>, sure that I would find a description of such a visit. Nothing. <i>Our American Adventure</i>, reporting on a later (1922) lecture tour, talks about the Poe cottage in Fordham, New York, but says nothing about Baltimore and the grave. I am beginning to think that Conan Doyle never did visit that crowded, run-down little cemetery where the inventor of the detective story found his last resting place.<br />

Fred Shoken, who pointed out to me that a good deal of what I wrote in those pages of <i>Welcome to America</i> just isn't true, gets the final word: <br />

"Doyle may have visited Poe's grave by proxy, 36 years after his alleged visit in 1894. According to (an) article in the <i>Baltimore Sun</i> of January 15, 1930, William Gillette, who had been appearing at Baltimore's Ford's Theater in a revival of his play "Sherlock Holmes," visited Poe's grave on January 14, 1930. The article states that Gillette placed a wreath on the tomb that had ribbons with his name and also that of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The article states Doyle had cabled Gillette and requested that he pay this tribute to Poe. Doyle passed away less than six months later."</blockquote>

If you know a young person that you’d like to introduce to Sherlock Holmes, but they aren’t quite ready for murderous hounds stalking the moor, then there's a different dog that they should meet.  Digby, a lovable street dog in Victorian London, is the main character of Brenda Seabrooke’s new novel, <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Scones-Bones-Street-Sherlocks-Dilemma/dp/1537352814" target="_blank">Scones and Bones on Baker Street, Sherlock’s Dog (Maybe!) and the Dirt Dilemma</a></i>.<br />
<br />
Digby is a dog living on the streets in London and looking for something to eat when he crosses paths with Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson.  After helping the famous duo with an exciting adventure at Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, Digby decides that he wants to become a watchdog and helper for the great detective.  Although Holmes is not interested in having a street dog, or any dog for that matter, living at Baker Street, Doctor Watson and Mrs. Hudson prove to be more welcoming.  Digby soon finds himself following Holmes and Watson through the events of “The Adventure of the Red-Headed League” while striving to change Holmes’ mind about having a dog around.  As Digby would say, the game is apaw.  <br />
<br />
This book follows the familiar tale from the dog’s point of view, an interesting take on a case well known to most of us.  But the target audience for this book is young readers.  By making the main character a lovable dog, young readers are sure to enjoy Digby’s adventures in London.  Digby’s blunders with Holmes and Watson while in a restaurant and a violin concert are sure to please.<br />
<br />
The text is written at an accessible level for second to fourth graders, and most words or phrases that could be confusing to the reader are explained in footnotes on the page.  <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Scones-Bones-Street-Sherlocks-Dilemma/dp/1537352814" target="_blank">Scones and Bones on Baker Street</a></i> is less than 150 pages with over 20 full page illustrations meant to please the young reader.  This would be a welcome addition to the book collection of any budding Sherlockian, dog lover, history fan, or lover of a good story.<br />

Language is one of the things that binds us together as a society. Words mean something. Although we're constantly observing language changing right before our eyes, from new words being introduced (as always) and even more visual elements being introduced (such as emjoi).<br />

But one of the most vexing things about the English language, aside from the spelling and pronunciation of certain parts of speech, must be the existence of homophones and homonyms. If you thought these words were interchangeable, the short answer is that they're not.<br />

<b>Homonyms</b> are words which have the same spelling and pronunciation, but have different meanings. <b>Homophones</b> are words which have the same pronunciation, but different spellings and meanings. Homographs are words that are spelled the same, but have different pronunciations and meanings.<br />

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's novel <a href="https://smile.amazon.com/Mycroft-Holmes-Kareem-Abdul-Jabbar/dp/1783291540/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497390883&sr=8-1&keywords=KAREEM+ABDUL+JABBAR+MYCROFT"><i>Mycroft Holmes</i></a> was a huge hit when it was released in 2015.  He spoke with Scott and Burt on <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose81" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Episode 81</a> of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere, where he shared his early exposure to the stories and his favorites therein. Abdul-Jabbar's Mycroft Holmes returned in comic book form last year with a five-issue limited run titled "Mycroft Holmes and the Apocalypse Handbook." The five issues have been collected into <a href="https://smile.amazon.com/Mycroft-Holmes-Apocalypse-Handbook-Abdul-Jabbar/dp/1785853007/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1497390883&sr=8-2&keywords=KAREEM+ABDUL+JABBAR+MYCROFT" target="_blank">a graphic novel set to come out in September</a>. I had a chance to interview Kareem about his interest in Mycroft and what made him take Sherlock's smarter brother to the world of comic books.<br />

 I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere: What drew you to the character of Mycroft Holmes?</h3>
<b>Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: </b>People have been writing Sherlock Holmes stories for over a hundred years. I wanted to approach it from another angle, one that was still fairly unknown. Mycroft is a mystery, so writing a mystery about Mycroft is a mystery within a mystery. I got to imagine his origin story and personality with only the slightest clues from Conan Doyle. I especially liked the idea that he was smarter than Holmes and applied his gifts in the service of his government.</div>

IHOSE: How did you choose your coauthors for this series?</h3>
<b>KAJ:</b> Anna Waterhouse, who co-wrote the novels, and Raymond Obstfeld, who co-wrote the comic book series, are actually friends. They are both college professors with long careers in writing movies and books. Anna’s penchant for evoking the historic era made her a natural choice for the novel. And Raymond’s encyclopedic knowledge of and passion for graphic novels made him an easy choice.<br />

 IHOSE: In this series, Mycroft Holmes is much more the man of adventure than he is in the Conan Doyle stories. This story line is more of an adventure than your Mycroft novel, also.  What drew you to the action genre for this character?</h3>
<b>KAJ:</b> In a novel, you have more time to build the subtleties of character and plot that you don’t have in a graphic novel. The graphic novel lends itself more to the visual adventure. Plus, having already imagined Mycroft as one kind of character, I was intrigued by the possibility of presenting him as an entirely different kind of character—a rogue and adventurer. The more I thought about that, the more fun I had with his character.<br />

IHOSE: You are an author who is constantly trying out <a href="https://kareemabduljabbar.com/books/">new genres in hiswriting</a>. Was that the impetus behind telling this story in a comic book format? How did you decide to make Mycroft a comic book hero?</h3>
<b>KAJ:</b> Writing a comic book is much more like writing a sonnet than writing a novel. You are limited by how many panels you can get on a page and you are limited to 22 pages in an issue. So everything you do, from the image you select to the dialogue must be precise and serve a purpose. There’s no room for indulgence that you sometimes get in a novel. I also think that the comic book, like most popular culture, is on the forefront of revealing what our values are as a society. Mycroft is pretty much the same as a Millennial right now, trying to figure out what he stands for and what he wants to do about it.<br />

IHOSE: With this being your second outing with Mycroft Holmes, what were the big changes to the storytelling process you had to address with changing from the medium of a novel to a comic book?</h3>
<b>KAJ:</b> As I said, precision is the greatest challenge. But that’s also what made the process so exciting. I wanted to tell a large sweeping story that spanned continents, included steampunk elements, had real historic figures, and was a combination of an Indiana Jones and James Bond adventure.<br />

IHOSE: Being the history buff that you are, how much of an influence did historical research play in this story?</h3>
<b>KAJ:</b> A lot of research went into every page, from the opening scene at the British Museum to details about Queen Victoria and Jesse James, to the chemicals science in some of the weapons.<br />

IHOSE: Can you describe the relationship between Mycroft and Sherlock in this story?</h3>
<b>KAJ:</b> We see Sherlock in person and in flashbacks when they were children. Sherlock is still just a college student when he appears, but there is fierce competitiveness between them. Where Sherlock has isolated himself from the world by abstaining from its pleasures, Mycroft has isolated himself by overindulging in its pleasures. Where Sherlock feels less, Mycroft feels too much and has to steel himself. Neither fits in because their brains won’t let them. But Mycroft feels it’s his responsibility to imbue some sense of humanity in his brother and that makes for some touching moments between them.<br />

<h3>
IHOSE: In both of your stories so far, Mycroft finds himself travelling the world.  First to Trinidad, and now in America. When you envisioned these stories, did you plan on him being a globetrotter or did that come about later after you developed him? And what made you think to put him in the American west this time?</h3>
<b>KAJ:</b> I always wanted him to travel the world in order to have him react to the different locales. Getting his take on these exotic locations is fun and informational and adds a level of entertainment to the mysteries. I loved the idea of Mycroft in the American West just to see how he would handle himself. He sees himself as a bit of a rogue, but when he comes face to face will real rogues, he sees himself in a whole new light.<br />

IHOSE: In your novel, Cyrus Douglas acts as Mycroft’s moral compass. With this story taking place before the novel, Cyrus is absent in the comics. We learn early on that Mycroft is not the most moral of characters. Did you ever find yourself letting Mycroft becoming too much of a cad while you were writing this story?</h3>
<b>KAJ:</b> Not at all. We add struggle between the base impulses of our ids and the divine leanings of the superego. Stories of redemption are much more interesting because there’s always suspense about whether the character will make choices based on his roguish nature or desire to be better.<br />

IHOSE: In issue 1, Mycroft says, “We Holmes brothers are not religious.” The Holmes brothers' religion or lack thereof has been a debated topic in Sherlockian circles for decades. What made you decide to place them on the atheist side of that debate?</h3>
<b>KAJ:</b> I wanted them to embody pure reason, and religion is not a choice of reason but of faith, which by definition excludes reason. Faith means to believe in something for which there is no evidence. Many people, including myself, find a way to balance faith and reason, but the Holmes brothers cannot make that leap of faith.<br />

 IHOSE: Speaking of religion, Conan Doyle wrote that Sherlock Holmes visited Mecca after his battle with Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls. Do you see an influence of the Islamic religion in Sherlock’s character?</h3>
<b>KAJ:</b> Reason and curiosity requires that one explore all religions before either selecting one or dismissing them altogether. The Holmes brothers are influenced by strong sense of human decency, which can be found in all the world’s major religions.<br />

IHOSE: The MacGuffin of this story isn’t one that you would see in a typical Sherlock Holmes story. What made you choose to use such fantastic items?</h3>
<b>KAJ:</b> Fun. I want the reader to have a lot of fun with the story and imagining these devices added a level of surprise. Each issue the reader wonders what amazing device will appear next—at least I hope so.<br />

 IHOSE: Mycroft’s accomplice in his American adventure has a familiar name to Holmes fans. What was the thought process at naming the character that way, just a nod to the original stories, or is there something deeper there?</h3>
<b>KAJ:</b> There’s definitely more to the story. That relationship with [that character (name redacted)] will be revealed in future issues.<br />

On June 13, 1892, Philip St. John Basil Rathbone was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He entered the world at a time when Sherlock Holmes was making a name for himself in the <i>Strand Magazine</i>, specifically in "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches." Little did he or his parents realize that he would go on to become one of the most famous portrayers of Sherlock Holmes on the screen.<br />
<br />
He attended <a href="http://www.repton.org.uk/" target="_blank">Repton</a> from 1906 to 1910, and by the time he left school, he was convinced he wanted to make a life for himself in the theatre. After spending some time in local theatrical productions, he entered war service in 1916, where he continued to hone his acting skills, albeit as more of a stationary object. According to <a href="http://www.basilrathbone.net/biography/" target="_blank">BasilRathbone.net</a>, Rathbone told Edward R. Murrow in a 1957 interview:<br />

<span style="background-color: white;"> "I went to my commanding officer and I said that I thought we'd get a great deal more information from the enemy if we didn't fool around in the dark so much . . . and I asked him whether I could go out in daylight. I think he thought we were a little crazy. . . .  I said we'd go out camouflaged -- made up as trees -- with branches sticking out of our heads and arms . . . . We brought back an awful lot of information, and a few prisoners, too."</span></blockquote>

Rathbone eventually moved from England to the United States, settling in New York in 1923 and then moving on to Hollywood in 1935. His <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001651/?ref_=tt_cl_t4" target="_blank">Hollywood years</a> brought him fame in <i>Captain Blood</i> and <i>The Adventures of Robin Hood</i>, where he became known as an able swordsman and a fine villain. And it was in 1938 when he joined forces with Nigel Bruce for a collaboration that lasted from 1939 to 1946 as the most <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/search/label/Basil%20Rathbone#.WT8SS2grLb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">enduring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson</a> to grace the screen.<br />

Rathbone left the role of Sherlock Holmes in 1946, fearful of typecasting (he was correct, of course, but too late). His wife Ouida wrote a stage play, "Sherlock Holmes," in 1953, but it closed after poor reviews and only three performances. He made a handful of middle-rate movies in the 1960s, toured in the one-man play "An Evening with Basil Rathbone," and wrote his biography <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Out-Character-Basil-Rathbone/dp/0879101199" target="_blank">In and Out of Character</a></i>, which was published in 1962.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basil_Rathbone" target="_blank">Basil Rathbone</a> died on July 21, 1967 at the age of 75. He is interred in <a href="http://www.basilrathbone.net/potpourri/ferncliff.htm" target="_blank">Ferncliff Cemetary</a> in Hartsdale, NY.<br />
<br />
While Holmes purists may find something to quibble about in the later 12 films of the 14-film series that Rathbone and Bruce made, it's clear that they continue to be accessible and popular. Every generation has its own Sherlock Holmes. But since the 1940s, it seems that every generation has been exposed to Rathbone's Holmes.<br />

wondered what a day in Mycroft Holmes' life was like, this well written and
pleasant read is for you. At work, Mycroft suffers from the attentions of an
overly interested cleaning lady and interacts with his eccentric coworkers. In
those times, as in these, he worries about the new administration and
the security of his employment. He even faces a cut in his pay.</span><br />

Mycroft's Diogenes Club in various ways. Their short stints of rooming together
do not go well. Their shared deductive powers are in the background as they
discuss Sherlock's prospects, their different approaches to money, and become
embroiled in the antics of their extended family. Given the colorful Holmes family
members, it is understandable that Sherlock would not desire to see them included in Dr.
Watson's tales. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">The diary
progresses irregularly through events from 1880 to 1888, skipping weeks, then
months, then years. Thankful Mycroft chose to record the events that occurred during
the period of Sherlock Holmes' life prior to meeting Dr. John H. Watson. We
find out about where Sherlock was living, his financial situation and the
events leading to his finding digs in Baker Street. Mycroft offers some
details of Sherlock's cases, but never enough to offer solutions to their disputed dates. Later, Mycroft puts pen to journal to record the
first publication of <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>, and documents his
meeting Dr. Watson, both informally and formally.</span><br />

The actor Peter Sallis <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-40165443" target="_blank">has passed away</a> at the age of 96.<br />

Sallis was best known in the UK for his role as Norman "Cleggy" Clegg in <i>Last of the Summer Wine</i> from its first episode in 1973 until the series concluded in 2010. He was the only actor who appeared on every one of the 295 episodes.<br />
<br />
Internationally — and cross-generationally — he was better known as the voice of Wallace, the cheese lover and inventor, in the Wallace and Gromit animated films by Nick Park.<br />
<br />
But in the world of Sherlock Holmes, Peter Sallis will forever hold our imagination and admiration for his turn as Dr. Watson in the stage production of <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Musical-Adventure-Sherlock-Original-Broadway/dp/B000CQQGVE?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">Baker Street</a></i> in 1965. The Jerome Coopersmith / Ray Jessel musical starred Fritz Weaver as Sherlock Holmes, Martin Gable as Professor Moriarty, and Inga Swenson as Irene Adler.<br />

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Sallis" target="_blank">Peter Sallis</a> had a long and varied career on the stage, television and film. And astute listeners and followers of the BBC Radio adaptation of Sherlock Holmes (ref. <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose68" target="_blank">Episode 68</a> and <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose69" target="_blank">Episode 69</a> with Bert Coules) may recall Sallis as Jonas Oldacre in "The Adventure of the Norwood Builder" with Clive Merrison as Sherlock Holmes and Michael Williams as Dr. Watson.<br />

Sallis stopped performing in 2010 after he gradually lost his sight due to macular degeneration. We had asked his manager for assistance in having Sallis on as a guest on IHOSE, but he graciously declined. Even so, we're fortunate to have a record of Sallis's performances in the instances mentioned above.<br />

If you're not into cryptography, codes can be vexing. In all fairness, that's what they're designed to do. And we know of a number of times that codes or ciphers are used in the Sherlock Holmes stories. Indeed, in "The Adventure of the Dancing Men," Holmes himself tells us<br />

"I am fairly familiar with all forms of secret writings, and am myself the author of a trifling monograph upon the subject, in which I analyze one hundred and sixty-three separate ciphers."</blockquote>
But when the uninitiated are on the other end of a code, cracking that code can seem a nearly impossible task. Of course, the creator of the code likely thinks its foolproof, as Abe Slaney did in DANC. But Holmes reminded him that there's always a way: "What one man can invent, another can discover."<br />

I was thinking about <i>Sherlock</i> the other day (as I so often do), and suddenly my muse poked me in the tummy (as she often does). The realization dawned on me that fashion actually plays a fairly large role in numerous episodes of <i>Sherlock</i>, and often in quite a negative way. I am not sure what to make of this trend, but take a look at some of these examples and see if you can find a deep, underlying message.<br />
<br />
Maybe Gatiss and Moffat hate the fashion world. Maybe there is an even deeper meaning that hasn't even occurred to me yet because I'm still recovering from my muse punching me in the belly. Anyway, take a gander and see if anything occurs to you.<br />

<h3>
<b>A Study in Pink</b></h3>
The title of this episode plays right into my hands, doesn't it? Actually this is what started my pondering. Even though several other "suicides" occur in the episode, much of the focus is spent on the woman in pink. Her pink outfit and the pink bag are discussed in detail as they give Sherlock ideas about her story. Beyond that though, Sherlock analyzes her wedding band and finds bad news (she takes the ring off a lot).<br />

<b>The Great Game</b></h3>
This episode concentrates on a pair of shoes tied to a very old murder case. Even more pertinent to this argument, however, is that Sherlock makes a rapid and in the end distracting evaluation of Moriarty's character based on how Jim is dressed. Sherlock assumes that Molly has managed to find herself tied up with a gay man based on Moriarty's hair styling and way of dressing. Later we find out that in fact Moriarty did that on purpose to capture Sherlock's attention. Are Gatiss and Moffat playing with fashion to capture our attention or distract us from something else?<br />

<b>The Sign of Three</b></h3>
Although one of the sweeter and more suspenseful episodes, I'm afraid to tell you fashion also plays a dreadful role here. In this case, belt buckles associated with military uniforms do the damage. Fashion does not seem to be a neutral player, now does it?<br />

<h3>
<b>The Hat</b></h3>
Perhaps all of this is a revolt against Sherlock's hat. Along with a pipe, most people, when they picture Sherlock Holmes, probably picture that cute little hat (I'm a big hat fan). In a way, it has come to define the character in our societal lexicon. In the show, Sherlock of course hates the hat and only wears it at John's pressing (and because the crowds are expecting it). Maybe the whole point is that fashion alone should not be expected to tell the whole story. The hat certainly does not tell the whole story of Sherlock, just as Moriarty's style certainly did not tell the whole story about him.<br />
<br />
On the other hand, maybe this is all just a big coincidence. Maybe my muse was a little drunk the other day, or maybe she is feeling vengeful.<br />

Remembering Roger Moore

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Moore" target="_blank">Sir Roger Moore</a> has passed away after a short bout with cancer, according to his family. He was 89 years old.<br />
<br />
The actor was most famous for his turn as James Bond in the 1970s and 1980s, filling the rather large shoes in which Sean Connery trod in six films before him. He of course also famously played Simon Templar in the television series <i>The Saint</i> in the 1960s. Two great figures in the mystery genre.<br />
<br />
But audiences in these parts also know him for another mystery role, one which may be a bit more obscure to the non-Sherlock Holmes fan: specifically his role as Sherlock Holmes in the 1976 made-for-television movie <i><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075208/?ref_=nv_sr_2" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes in New York</a></i>, with <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2015/06/remembering-patrick-macnee.html" target="_blank">Patrick MacNee</a> as Dr. Watson, Charlotte Rampling as Irene Adler, and John Huston as an unpologetically American-Irish accented Professor Moriarty.<br />

Moore had a predilection for crime-solving — one might even call it "art in the blood." [GREE] In <i><a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&an=haining&tn=The+television+sherlock+holmes&kn=&isbn=" target="_blank">The Television Sherlock Holmes</a></i>, Peter Haining relays the following:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"As the son of a London policeman, Roger Moore has always been interested in law and order, and indeed has only ever played 'good guys' in films. And despite the fact that he is one of the few actors not to have read all of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes before he played the part, his admiration for the character is considerable."</blockquote>

But convincing Moore to take on the role was not an easy one. According to Chris Steinbrunner and Norman Michaels in <i><a href="https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&an=Steinbrunner&tn=The+Films+of+Sherlock+Holmes&kn=&isbn=" target="_blank">The Films of Sherlock Holmes</a></i>, he was eventually convinced by the script:<br />

"Holmes comes to life in this story. I wear a number of different disguises and this appeals to me. I have a love affair with a beautiful actress who has a nine-year-old son named Scott and we learn that Holmes's middle name is Scott. And, of course, there is Moriarty threatening to steal all the gold in the world. But what I like most about playing Holmes is that there is more dialogue in this script that I have ever had in 120 'Saint' episodes and two 'Bond' films."</blockquote>

Steinbrunner and Michaels continue, citing a <i>TV Guide</i> review by Judith Crist on October 18, 1976:<br />

"Moore and Patrick MacNee provide attractive variations on the familiar characters. Moore's Holmes, in fact, has a dash of the debonair and the worldly...that sites well on the great detective. After Moriarty, in his rococo lair, threatens Holmes with a trap door, flying daggers, and a crashing chandelier, the great detective calmly remarks, 'A pity about the chandelier; it was the only item in the room that showed the merest modicum of style.' And when Sherlock and the lady in distress have their moments, there's an undertone of emotion new to Holmes sagas...Under Boris Sagal's direction, this is first-class entertainment."</blockquote>
