Following last week's news that <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2010/09/one-of-queerest-men-gree_27.html#.Vq2mu_krLb0" rel="nofollow">Stephen Fry would play Mycroft Holmes</a>, it seems that we now have the results of the long-awaited casting of Professor Moriarty. Those of you familiar with the award-winning television drama <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Mad-Men-Season-Jon-Hamm/dp/B000YABIQ6?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><b><i>Mad Men</i></b></a> may recognize the name Jared Harris. He plays Lane Pryce, the finance chief at the advertising agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, set in 1960s New York.<br />

But it is 1890s London that will see him next as he becomes the Napoleon of Crime, Professor James Moriarty - forever known as the archenemy of Sherlock Holmes. This is difficult role to fill, as it's one of the most iconic in the Canon, yet one that's given precious little description, other than what Holmes conveys to us mostly in "The Final Problem":<br />

"He is extremely tall and thin, his forehead domes out in a white curve, and his two eyes are deeply sunken in his head. He is clean-shaven, pale, and ascetic-looking, retaining something of the professor in his features. His shoulders are rounded from much study, and his face protrudes forward, and is for ever slowly oscillating from side to side in a curiously reptilian fashion. He peered at me with great curiosity in his puckered eyes."</blockquote>

Back to Jared Harris: his acting skills have been recognized recently, as he has received two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his outstanding performances, both in <b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Curious-Case-Benjamin-Button-Single-Disc/dp/B001U0HBPG?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><i>The Curious Case of Benjamin Button</i></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=B001U0HBPG" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important;" width="1" /></b> and Mad Men. Not only that, but he actually has some interesting Sherlockian connections that we'd be remiss if we omitted them:<br />

The other point is that he was married to Emilia Fox, who is the daughter of actor Edward Fox. As anticipation for the sequel to <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Holmes-Robert-Downey-Jr/dp/B001OQCV6A?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank"><b><i>Sherlock Holmes</i></b></a> mounts, another detail has been made public: Stephen Fry will play the part of Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's older brother.<br />

There are a number of interesting tie-ins that make this particularly interesting, but we'll start with the announcement first. Mr. Fry himself broke the news on the Danny Baker show on BBC 5 Live, and the news was <a href="http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/09/25/stephen-fry-is-mycroft-holmes-see-his-resemblance-to-guy-ritchie/">immediately shared by Bleeding Cool</a>. The direct quote from Fry was:<br />

I’m playing Mycroft in the sequel to the Sherlock Holmes film Guy Ritchie directed with Robert Downey Jr., and that sort of part is fun, but just once in a while to play a genuine all round sort of lead figure with complexity and tragedy and wit and all the sort of things that Oscar [Wilde] had was a once in a lifeftime thrill.</blockquote>

We think it's an inspired casting decision for a number of reasons:<br />

<li>Mr. Fry was also deeply interested in the <a href="http://www.conandoylecollection.co.uk/">bequest of Richard Lancelyn Green to the city of Portsmouth</a> and he narrated the BBC 4 documentary "The Man Who Loved Sherlock Holmes." <li>We know that Holmes referred to his brother as "one of the queerest men" in London. That term can be taken in a couple of ways - one being quirky and the other meaning gay. Well, Stephen Fry's <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000410/bio">IMDb biography</a> includes both kinds of references: "Writer, actor, comedian, doer of good works, excellent good friend to the famous and not...Emma Thompson has characterised her friend as '90 percent gay, 10 percent other.'" He is also credited as "Cricket fan, Sherlockian, charter member Groucho Club (Soho)."</li>
<li>Stephen Fry is a noted author in his own right, so we can be sure that he is a reader as well (and we're assuming this means the Canon). We hope that his turn as Mycroft - a infrequently appearing role that has been played by the likes of Christopher Lee, Charles Gray, Robert Morley and a handful of others - will be a memorable one. We received news of the passing of a legendary Holmesian earlier this week. Bernard Davies, BSI ("<i>A Study in Scarlet</i>") passed beyond the Reichenbach. Chairman of the <a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.org.uk/press_cutting.php?id=232">Sherlock Holmes Society of London</a> from 1983-86, he was a member of the Society since 1959 and an Honorary Member. He received the investiture "<i>A Study in Scarlet</i>" from the Baker Street Irregulars in 1985 - an exalted title, as it is one of only four investitures of the original novels, and also because it was previously held by <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Private-Life-Sherlock-Holmes-Anniversary/dp/093850147X?ie=UTF8&tag=thebakerstree-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">Vincent Starrett</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=093850147X" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important;" width="1" />.<br />

Davies was a prolific writer - such that in 2008, the SHSL compiled his scholarship in the two volume collection<b><i> </i></b><a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.org.uk/shop_item.php?item_id=0"><b><i>Holmes and Watson Country</i></b></a>, which is still available for sale from the Society. One of his landmark pieces is on the location of 221B Baker Street.<br />

But his interests didn't begin and end with Holmes; Davies was also an avid scholar of Dracula, having served as Co-President and Co-Founder of the Dracula Society. As Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts, we're accustomed to people of various vocations and with a myriad of hobbies trying to shoehorn Sherlock Holmes into their particular interests. A full 13 episodes on this two-disc set will put you in a distinctly Victorian and Holmesian mood, including "The Red-Headed League," "The Six Napoleons," "The Beryl Coronet," "The Devil's Foot," "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax," "The Speckled Band" and more. This was a groundbreaking series, as they were mostly faithful to the Canon, the production values were fairly high, and the schedule was grueling on the actors (causing Wilmer to bow out, handing the reins to Peter Cushing). It was part of what Wilmer spoke about during his 1998 tour of the United States.<br />

As the old adage goes, "an elephant never forgets." But if we asked you if you could remember where in the Canon an elephant is mentioned, you'd probably have a difficult time remembering. For two reasons, really: (1) you're not an elephant; (2) it's only mentioned in one story, and in that case, it was an elephant gun, not the animal itself.<br />
<br />
Regarding elephants, this piece of news was shared in Peter Blau's <a href="http://www.sherlocktron.com/2010.pdf">Scuttlebutt from the Spermacetti Press</a> in July:<br />

<a href="http://www.elephantparadelondon.org/">Elephant Family</a> (a financial support organization for endangered Asian elephants) draws attention to its work with an Elephant Parade of decorated life-size model baby elephants displayed in major cities around the world; the parade has now reached London, where 258 elephants are to be sold in an auction that will end on July 4.  Cherrie Waltho has reported (and photographed) a Sherlock Holmes elephant in Baker Street (Nick Utechin notes that it's almost outside #109, which was James Holroyd's choice for 221B).</blockquote>

More information, along with color photographs, is <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;"><a href="http://www.elephantparadelondon.org/" target="_blank">available at their website</a></span> at where there's also a shop that sells miniature reproductions in four sizes, from 10 cm (£27.50) to 35 cm (£199.00).  The artist who created the Sherlock Holmes elephant is Turdsak Piromkraipak, and it was sponsored by the Evening Standard.  The organizers are hoping for an audience estimated at 25 million, and that the auction will raise £2 million.</blockquote>
Evidently, the online auction was very successful, as £2.4 million were raised, bringing the grand total to over £4 million.<br />

In <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2010/07/search-of-glor_3.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">one of our last posts</a>, we asked for connections between Leonard Nimoy and Sherlock Holmes, and you graciously submitted yours. Thank you for that!<br />

To those of you who were wondering what the connections are, we'll start with our own - we were thinking of three.<br />

1. After completing his run on the <a href="https://amzn.to/3tquWgf" target="_blank"><b><i>Star Trek</i></b></a><b><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=B001DHXT6G" style="border: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" width="1" /></b> television series, Mr. Nimoy returned to the stage. In 1974, he played the title character in the U.S. tour of <a href="https://amzn.to/38SeOKR" target="_blank">William Gillette's play "Sherlock Holmes."</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=thebakerstree-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=B001PDLR6M" style="border: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" width="1" /><br />

2. Around that same time, Nimoy starred in a 15-minute short educational film called "Sherlock Holmes: Interior Motive," in which the origins of the Earth were explained. Here we have a short clip from it. Thankfully, it's not a long clip.<br />
