The mentions of American locales are scattered throughout the Canon. There are 25 states mentioned - quite an accomplishment, when one considers that there were fewer than 48 states while Conan Doyle was writing - with the Deep South taking up 8 of those slots.<br /><br />It was the Deep South that represented particularly mysterious and misunderstood backgrounds - think <a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/five.htm">The Five Orange Pips</a>  and <a href="http://camdenhouse.ignisart.com/canon/yell.htm">The Yellow Face</a> as prime examples. So when new technology combines with masterful insight a la Keefauver, you know it's something worth considering.<br /><br />In one of his entries last week, Brad touched on an idea that I've been considering for a while, but just haven't figured out how to put it to work. As <a href="http://www.bakerstreetblog.com/2007/06/i-hould-be-very-glad-of-little.html">I recently indicated</a>, I'm a little strapped for time. Therefore, I was thrilled when he broached - however preliminarily - the idea of a <a href="http://sherlockpeoria.net/ViewFromSP/ViewSP2007/ViewSP061707.html" style="font-weight: bold;">Sherlockipedia</a>. Take a look at his perspective and see what you think.<br /><br />The essence of a "wiki" is that the community bands together to use its collective knowledge to create a knowledge base. The most famous of these is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia">Wikipedia</a> (you can see the entry for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes">Sherlock Holmes</a>). The more edited or added to an article is, the more accurate and comprehensive it is.<br /><br />Can you imagine the day that a wiki exists for Sherlockian information? I was originally thinking it would be an online version of the Encyclopedia Sherlockiana, but I quickly realized that it can also serve as a clearing-house for events, societies, famous Sherlockians, online and offline resources, travel tie-ins, books, etc. It's very exciting.<br /><br />I'm looking forward to seeing how all of this will work out and hashing out the details with Brad. Expect to read more about it here, which will certainly include the clarion call for contributions. Let me ask you - would you be willing to apply your expertise to such a project?

Greg follows Ginny when she goes on an unexpected visit to ‘see her parents.’ Meanwhile, Philip suspects his wife, Sheila, is having an affair. Sheila is not the least bit suspicious of Philip. It was a trial, an experiment, a unique and new way of informing Sherlockians on a variety of topics.<br /><br />Couple that with the lightning-like evolution of new media in a fairly short period of time and what you've been lucky enough to witness is a revolution in the way we communicate. The different tools and widgets that have sprouted in the sidebar are testament to that.<br /><br />So when I started taking data from Ron Fish's comprehensive master <a href="http://sherlockiancalendar.homestead.com/">Calendar of Sherlockian Events</a> and  integrated it with a <a href="http://www.google.com/calendar/render?cid=sherlockian.calendar%40gmail.com">Google calendar</a>, I thought it was simply another outgrowth of the process. I liked the idea of using the Google version, because it allows me to show dates directly on this blog and has a traditional calendar-style approach.<br /><br />But I've come to a point where I can't manage the Google calendar any more. So here are my questions for you, dear readers:<br /><ol><li>Should I abandon the Google calendar entirely?</li><li>If not, is there someone who would be willing to help out with inputting the dates? (It's very basic)</li><li>If so, would the use of another application with a calendar plug-in feature, such as <a href="http://upcoming.yahoo.com/">Upcoming</a> be a feasible approach?</li></ol>I realize that some of this may sound like mumbo-jumbo to some of you. Other than early issues, The Baker Street Journal has tended to stay away from pastiches, or stories written about Sherlock Holmes in the style of Doyle. Call it the purists in us, or call it the lack of editorial space that those early volumes so plentifully offered (remember too that they bankrupted publisher Ben Abramson).<br /><br />I was recently contacted by Mark Wardecker to see if I knew if the BSJ would run a pastiche that he had written. I let him know that it wouldn't. While I don't typically enjoy that form of Sherlockian work myself, nor do I wish this blog to be a repository of the same, I did take a quick look at what he had done with "The Adventure of the Second Round." Mark describes it as follows:<br /><blockquote>This particular story is set very late, just before Watson's last marriage and Holmes' subsequent retirement.  Once again, Holmes and Watson find themselves "moving in high life" (ABBE) after they are called in by the Yard to help solve a murder in Kensington.<br /></blockquote>Like I said, I'm not a fan of this particular genre - I'm a Canonical purist. As a rule, writers that attempt to mimic Conan Doyle's unique and sparse style usually fall short. With very few words (as opposed to his Victorian colleagues such as Dickens or Trollope), he managed to set vivid scenes for us. And most writers just can't accomplish it in the same facile way the Doyle did.<br /><br />While it is an admirable first attempt, Wardecker's work is no exception to this rule. You'll find that is is about 90% dialog (I don't know the exact figures, but I know Doyle used significantly more narrative in his work). It's very believable as far as that goes, but there are certain turns of phrase that mark it as alternatively modern or stilted, which is another hallmark of pastiches.<br /><br />I'd recommend that you take a look at it yourselves, because your enjoyment of it may be far different than my own. Can it be that four years have lapsed since the "From Gillette to Brett" conference held in Indianapolis? The answer would appear to be "yes," as that remarkable event - which featured an appearance by Edward Hardwicke, who played Dr. Watson to Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes - occurred in 2003.<br /><br />Wessex Press (aka Steve Doyle and Mark Gagen, both members of the Baker Street Irregulars) have announced <a href="http://www.wessexpress.com/">From Gillette to Brett II</a>, being held in Indianapolis, Indiana from November 16-18, 2007. Their website has all of the information, but here's the official announcement:<br /><blockquote>In 2003 Wessex Press sponsored one of the most memorable Sherlockian conferences of all time. Devoted to Sherlock Holmes on stage, screen, television, and radio, From Gillette to Brett featured a film festival, Sherlockian vendors, and an all-star roster of distinguished speakers and presenters. And now, like every box office success, the time has come for a sequel!</blockquote>The cost for registration is only $99 and the Saturday evening banquet is an additional $47. Quite a bargain for admission to see a stellar cast. The Wessex Press website has the complete information, including accommodations and speaker lineup. It's like having a newspaper on your doorstep rather than having to trudge out to the corner store. You can listen right on your computer. Or your mobile phone. Or you can download it to the MP3 player of your choice. We just received a quick update from Gary Thaden, President of the Norwegian Explorers regarding the upcoming conference they're hosting in Minnesota:<br />

Spots are going quickly, but there is still room to register for the Norwegian Explorer’s conference, <span style="font-weight: bold;">"Victorian Secrets and Edwardian Enigmas"</span> on July 6-8, 2007.   The conference is committee is working on another great conference.  Confirmed speakers are <span style="font-weight: bold;">Michael Dirda, Michael Kean, Bill Mason, Dana Richards, Daniel Stashower, Sue Vizoskie</span> and a couple of local favorites.<br />

The conference will be held at Elmer L. Andersen Library at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.  The conference hotel is the Holiday Inn Metrodome. We find ourselves in a similar situation. You may have noticed that the postings to the site haven't been coming as fast and furious as they used to. Fear not! This is only a temporary matter. The truth is, we've taken a new job and took some time off in between that to spend with family and prepare for new opportunity. We hope to get back to the normal frenzied schedule of 4-6 posts a week that you've come to expect.<br />

For those of you who are curious, we're working for a company called <a href="http://www.crayonville.com/">crayon</a>, which is a "new marketing" company specializing in reaching consumers through the world of new media - blogs, podcasts, wikis, virtual worlds, etc. Obviously the perfect fit for someone who has been involved in the blogosphere one way or another for about 4 years.<br />

There are a number of posts in the hopper - topics that have been swirling around in your editor's head or that you have been kind enough to volunteer. We simply ask that you be patient as we try to get up to speed. It may take a bit, but you have our word, it will be worth the wait.<br />

One of the things that we enjoy about the Sherlock Holmes stories - the Canon, if you please - and those devotees who follow it, is the ability to weave in so many of life's other interests. If you've got another hobby or passion, odds are you'll find a way to incorporate it into your love of Sherlock Holmes.<br />
<br />
Over the years, we've met Sherlockians who are also interested in horse racing, railroads, P.G. Wodehouse, pin collecting, the <span style="font-style: italic;">Titanic</span>, antiques, handwriting analysis, coin and stamp collecting, woodworking, needlepoint, jewelry making, wine, pipe collecting, music, period firearms, Victorian attire - the list goes on and on. Really, there's no limit to the connections we can make between our interests, if we're passionate enough about them.<br />
<br />
So it was with little surprise - but with great amusement - that we looked at the above photo sent by <a href="http://www.cc-chapman.com/" target="_blank">a colleague</a> of the individual who is a Holmes Trooper.<br />

Today is a special day in the date-books of Sherlockians and Doyleans from around the world. On May 22, 1859, Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born.<br />
<br />
You may recall that on <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/05/fine-figure-of-man-tall-lithe-and-agile_22.html#.WSufpGgrLb0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this date last year</a>, Google presented one of its holiday logos, to honor his most famous creation. What will the world have in store this year for Conan Doyle?<br />

As you probably know,  the Baker Street Irregulars, the literary society dedicated to the study of Sherlock Holmes, have called New York City their headquarters since their founding in 1934. While the early membership hailed almost exclusively from the northeast, today's BSI hails largely from around North America and even from a number of other continents.<br />
<br />
And despite the infinite number of entertainment venues in New York, each year <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/bsiweekend.html">when it is time for Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts to descend</a> upon Gotham, there are a number of places that we like to visit, revisit and call our home-away-from home.<br />
<br />
When we noticed an article from the Louisville, Kentucky <span style="font-style: italic;">Courier-Journal</span> titled <a href="http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007705200367">New York has a wealth of literary landmarks</a>, our antennae went up. Upon finishing the article, it seemed that it had been written for anyone who has attended a BSI Weekend in the past. A few of the familiar landmarks that made the C-J's list:<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.algonquinhotel.com/">The Algonquin Hotel</a>, the oldest still-operating hotel in New York and the birthplace of the New Yorker. It is also the unofficial headquarters of the BSI during our January weekends.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.mcsorleysnewyork.com/">McSorley's Old Ale House</a>, which usually plays host to the conclusion of the Christopher Morley Walk, is noted for its very reasonably-priced food.</li>
<li><a href="http://mysteriousbookshop.com/">The Mysterious Bookshop</a> is Otto Penzler's book-lover's haven, now transplanted in a trendy TriBeCa neighborhood. Although it's slightly out of the way, Otto's hospitality and tremendous selection make it worth the trip.</li>
</ul>
Print out the original article and file it away for January. You'll find yourself making a checklist of these places and being able to get through quite a bit of it. And you might even find something you've previously missed that you'd like to visit this time around.<br />

One of the destinations of many Sherlockian tourists in London is the <a href="http://www.parkplazasherlockholmes.com/" target="_blank">Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes Hotel</a>, a (now) boutique hotel on Baker Street that is part of Park Plaza Hotels of Europe.<br />
<br />
Although the exterior retains that classic Baker Street look, including some very large bow windows on the first floor (that's second floor to you Yanks), the accommodations inside are much more modern. And the rates, while not outrageous by London standards, may be more than the average tourist can handle - especially given <a href="http://www.x-rates.com/">the current exchange rate</a> of the U.S. Dollar and the British Pound.<br />
<br />
Actually, the room rates are fairly reasonable, given the style and comfort of the hotel, as well as the notion that you're staying just a block or two away from 221B.<br />

The end is nigh. At least that’s what the publishing world would have us believe. With the advent of the final Harry Potter book this summer, there’s a fear that with J.K. Rowling’s long-awaited finale will come the end of the cottage industry of related Harry Potter books.<br />
<br />
The May 10 edition of the <span style="font-style: italic;">Wall Street Journal</span> ran a piece (<a href="http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB117876383431898056-GThmnkKdFTp3CJQAcEEzWOdEkHA_20080509.html?mod=tff_main_tff_top">Last Hurrah for ‘Harry’ Offshoots?</a>) in which the books about the books were called “a whole literary ecosystem,” while the original Potter canon was likened to “whales to which many barnacles have attached themselves.” With over 190 books in print, it’s easy to see why. But is there cause for concern about the demise of Potterian scholarship and publishing?<br />
<br />
I think you know where I’m going with this. We’ve seen this phenomenon before, with Sherlockian scholarship paving the way. Before Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (or was it Dr. Watson?) had completed the Canon in 1927, Ronald Knox had penned his seminal treatise <a href="http://lachlan.bluehaze.com.au/books/knox_essays_in_satire/index.html">Studies in the Literature of Sherlock Holmes</a> in 1911. Only four years after Conan Doyle’s death did the Baker Street Irregulars came into being; it was just over a decade later that they began publishing the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/"><i>Baker Street Journal</i></a>.<br />
<br />
To this day, Sherlockian scholarship has not dimmed. The BSJ is still being published some 60 years later. In England, the <a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.org.uk/journal.php"><i>Sherlock Holmes Journal</i></a> is churned out on a regular basis and has been for over 50 years. Countless societies around the world continue with their own publications; online discussion groups flourish.<br />
<br />
Of course, the characters were never under copyright, so great liberties have been taken by a variety of authors, placing Holmes with concurrent historical figures and other literary characters, as well as in unlikely situations including sailing on the Titanic and getting married.<br />
<br />
While the Harry Potter characters will be well protected from such pastiches in the short term, parodies and pure scholarship are fair game. I suppose the question remains: will the seven original books continue to hold the interest of future generations in the same way they’ve enchanted the current adolescents and adults alike? If so, is the content of such a rich type that unending scholarship can continue to be churned out, or are these simply “beach books” – sensational and fun reading - that helped sustain the publishing industry for a short time?<br />
<br />
I'll close with a more controversial question for you, dear reader: were the Holmes stories simply viewed as Victorian/Edwardian beach books? It seems like many in academia today treat them as such.<br />

First it was the politically-correct BBC bowing to current groundswell when they barred Sherlock Holmes from smoking in their recent production <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892743/"><i>Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars</i></a> starring Jonathan Pryce.<br />
<br />
Now it seems that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) - the entity that is responsible for rating movies – is using smoking as one of the factors in deciding how to rate movies. They have not delineated any specifics, but it is thought that if a film already has a PG-13 rating thanks to levels of violence, drug use and sex, smoking will tip it over the edge to make it an R movie.<br />
<br />
Evidently, anti-smoking activists think this doesn't go far enough, as they would like to see an automatic R attached to any movie that features smoking. They want to protect the children.<br />
<br />
But I ask: would a Sherlock Holmes movie with a tobacco-free Holmes help the kids? Would they be better off by seeing the first unofficial consulting detective without his pipe? Think about it: the entire world knows Sherlock Holmes because of his profile in his hat and his pipe. Remove the latter and he’s just a mad hatter.<br />
<br />
Just think of the consequences:<br />

Then you’ll have the anti-cavity lobby and the American Dental Association after you. Not to mention the creators of Kojak, who’d sue for copyright infringement.</li>
<li>What would Holmes store in his Persian slipper?</li>
<li>When he’s in a disputatious mood, what physical object would he choose?</li>
</ul>
We've seen the modern version of this taken to its logical conclusion in the BBC's <i>Sherlock</i> with the three-patch problem utilizing nicotine patches instead. But Sherlock and Mycroft do enjoy a cigarette from time to time, despite the best efforts of Watson and Mrs. Hudson.<br />
<br />
These are the ramifications if the character were forced to go cold turkey. If he retained all of his addictions as we know them, it seems that any Holmes movie would likely receive an R rating, thus keeping away the younger crowd. As if we need any more obstacles in introducing Sherlock Holmes to kids…<br />

As you can imagine, it can sometimes be difficult to come up with content for this blog. Even though we can generally find something in the news every day that mentions "Sherlock Holmes," it's not always what we would deem "blogworthy" - that is, not of high enough quality to place before you, dear reader. When you couple that with a busy work life and home life, it's amazing that we can get one post out a week, let alone one a day.<br />

Of course, not being satisfied with simply being over-committed and over-delivering, we're actually thinking of <span style="font-style: italic;">over </span>over-delivering. I'm in the process of developing something to complement <strike>The Baker Street Blog</strike> I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere and make the experience even richer for you. What could it possibly be? Interested? Curious?<br />

One thing I strongly recommend - and again, you don't need an iPod or an Apple computer to do this - is <a href="http://www.apple.com/itunes/">iTunes</a>, the free software for listening to music and podcasts. You can <a href="http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/">download iTunes here</a>. It makes subscribing to podcasts very easy.<br />
