The <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars Weekend</a> is happening January 14-19, 2020, and it's usually a pretty big deal if you're taking time out of your life to head into New York City for 3+ days of activities with people you haven't seen in a year (or years!) or those you may have only known online until now. Whether you're making the trip for the first or twenty-first time, you know that the Weekend provides the same level of excitement, anticipation and giddiness as Christmas morning does to a child.<br />

It's usually during those anxious moments that our brain-attic tends to forget some of the essentials that help make a great trip perfect. And for the uninitiated, it's just a matter of not knowing what you need to survive the BSI Weekend.<br />
<br />
This is the <b>eighth </b>annual installment of this post — the first of which was inspired by interviewing several members of the Baker Street Irregulars — including some newer members who might have a less distant memory of their first Weekend, and some who have been at it literally for decades. Information has been updated to reflect changes in the city as well as in technology.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6321981775136876837" name="more"></a>While we know how many well-informed and helpful readers we have, we were once again impressed with the thoughtful suggestions that can make the BSI Weekend an enjoyable and stress-free one for you.<br />
<br />

Bags 🧳</h3>
<ul>
<li>Make sure that you have plenty of room to bring home books that you bought. If you have to bring an extra bag that you can fold up and put in your suitcase, do so. </li>
<li>Some suggest bringing a plastic shopping bag to the BSI dinner, as it makes carrying the dinner packet around a little easier, especially if you plan to go to another venue afterward. </li>
<li>You might also consider <b>bringing a shopping bag to the Merchants Room</b> on Saturday to carry your various purchases. Not all merchants provide bags; carting away your haul is <i>your</i> responsibility.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<h3>
Meeting Others 📇</h3>
<ul>
<li>Bring business cards. You will be meeting a lot of new people, and you will be sharing contact information. Put as many as you think that you will need in your pack, and then double it. And be sure to include all modes of contacting you, including website, Twitter handle, etc. </li>
<li>If you're in need of a good card, the <a href="http://moo.com/">Moo</a> does a splendid job and <a href="http://vistaprint.com/">VistaPrint</a> has a fast turnaround time. </li>
<li>If you want to make sure you get your table mates to sign your menu, bring a pen to the dinner. </li>
<li>Allow yourself time to schmooze with other Sherlockians. This is the fastest way to make new friends, who will quickly become old friends. </li>
</ul>

<h3>
Comportment / Etiquette 🤝</h3>
<ul>
<li><b>Do</b> tell people how good it is to see them again — or to meet them for the first time after having known them only online. <b>Do</b> tell them that you miss them in the intervening months between BSI weekends. <b>Do</b> tell them how invaluable they are to you as a Sherlockian comrade-in-arms and friend and how much you value their friendship. </li>
<li>If you're scheduled to speak at an event, be mindful not to overdo the alcohol beforehand. Dutch courage is usually inappropriate in such circumstances. </li>
<li>In this hyper-connected world, it's easy to forget that there are those attending the weekend for whom "it is always 1895" — or nearly so. When you're taking photographs, please be mindful of those who are firmly rooted in the 20th century and who might not want to appear on your  timeline by <u>asking their permission</u> to share your photos of them online.</li>
</ul>

<h3>
Attire 🥿 🧥</h3>
<ul>
<li>Bring comfortable shoes. The weekend inevitably includes a lot of walking. </li>
<li>This one is especially for the ladies: it's useful to have a change of shoes in your handbag so the stilettos don't murder you by the end of the evening (or vice versa). </li>
<li>Bring warm clothes. It is winter in New York, and non-Sherlockian New York friends say they know when we are in town because we bring really bad weather. </li>
<li>Dress in layers. Many times the weather can be cold, but there have been instances in New York in January when we could – and did – comfortably walk about the streets without even a jacket on. </li>
</ul>

<h3>
Money 💰</h3>
<ul>
<li>Bring small bills. They will come in handy as you share taxis going from place to place, and you’ll find them handy when tipping helpful service employees. We prefer withdrawing $2 bills from the bank and bringing them with us to make things extra efficient.</li>
<li>Bring a checkbook to the Merchants Room as not everyone takes credit cards and you may find an item you must have. </li>
<li>If you see something you're interested in at the Merchants Room and you can afford it, don't wait until your second sweep of the room – it will probably be gone by then.</li>
<li>Most of the vendors in the Merchants Room are very kind and understanding people, and many are also collectors or Sherlockians themselves. If you would care to haggle with them, they're likely open to it. It can't hurt to ask.</li>
<li>The BSI and Wessex Press tables will accept <b>credit cards, PayPal and Apple Pay</b>.</li>
<li>Estimate, on the top side, what you expect to spend – and then double it. That might get you through. 💸</li>
</ul>

<h3>
Time 🕰️</h3>
<ul>
<li>If you have any health conditions, allow yourself time to go back to your hotel room for periodic rests. Many find these rests invaluable, enabling them to enjoy the weekend despite their condition. Schedule your time. </li>
<li>Know when you need to be places (including when you need to catch the train/plane back home). </li>
<li>Count on it taking some time to get a cab amongst the other Sherlockians who may be headed to events on the other side of 5th Avenue.</li>
<li>Alternatively, download a ride-hailing app (such as Uber, Lyft or Via) to help you avoid these waits. <b>See below for more details and a way to save money on rides</b>.</li>
</ul>

<h3>
Getting Around 🚕 🚇 🚶</h3>
<ul>
<li>Print out a street map of the city with the places you need to be circled or otherwise identified. Many things are within walking distance, but it is good to know you are starting out in the right direction (or know when to turn). </li>
<li>If you're smartphone-enabled, there are plenty of map apps to choose from. Aside from the standard Google Maps, there's <a href="http://citymapper.com/" target="_blank">Citymapper</a>, <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gogobot.gogodroid.cityguide.newyorkcity" target="_blank">Gogobot's York City Guide for Android</a> and iOS has the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/new-york-travel-guide-offline/id319296365?mt=8">New York Travel Guide and Offline Map</a> by Ulmon.</li>
<li>Download and print the <a href="http://www.bsiweekend.com/2019/12/summary-of-events.html" target="_blank">Summary of Weekend Events</a> from <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/">bsiweekend.com</a> (and seen below), or bookmark it on your smartphone. </li>
<li>If you want to go to Otto Penzler's <a href="http://mysteriousbookshop.com/" target="_blank">Mysterious Bookshop</a> and are staying at The Roosevelt Hotel, the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to go is by subway. From Grand Central take a <b>4</b> or <b>5</b> express train <b>two</b> stops to <b>Brooklyn Bridge Station</b>; it is a very short walk over to Otto's. Don't take a local (which makes 10 stops). The express is about five minutes. </li>
<li>Download the <b>MYmta app</b> from the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mymta/id1297605670?mt=8">App Store</a> or <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=info.mta.mymta&hl=en">Google Play</a> for navigating the subway. </li>
<li>Pool funds with others to buy regular per-ride <b><a href="http://web.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm">MetroCards</a></b>. These can be shared by up to four people on each trip and are good for one transfer between subway/bus or between buses on uptown/crosstown routes within 2 hours.</li>
<ul>
<li>If you're 65 or older, present ID for a reduced fare MetroCard – $2.75 for two rides with the same transfer provisions noted above. <b>Note:</b> a 65+ MetroCard <b><i>cannot</i></b> be shared and you must find a live 'token booth' clerk to inspect your ID – reduced fare not available in machines.</li>
<li>If you reach the end of the Weekend with a balance on your MetroCard, return to New York more frequently! Or give your card to local-area Sherlockians.</li>
</ul>
<li>Download a ride-hailing app such as <a href="https://lyft.com/i/SCOTT726787" target="_blank">Lyft</a> or Uber. </li>
<ul>

<li><b>LaGuardia pro tip:</b> Traffic to and from LaGuardia can be a bit of a gamble, and quite expensive. Consider taking a cab to the <b>Jackson Heights - Roosevelt Ave.</b> subway station in Queens, and then taking an <span style="background-color: #073763;"> </span><b><span style="background-color: #073763; color: white;">E </span></b> or <span style="background-color: orange;"> </span><b style="background-color: orange;"><span style="color: white;">F </span></b> train to <b>Grand Central Station</b>.</li>

Logistics 📝</h3>
<ul>
<li>Bring your event payment confirmations, just in case of a glitch in the system. </li>
<li>Also, everything is pretty centrally located, but it's a good idea to have a list of your schedule with the addresses of the venues so that you don't suddenly find yourself asking, where the devil am I supposed to be right now? </li>
<li>The heat during the BSI dinner has been uncomfortable in years past in the Yale Club (potentially dangerously uncomfortable 6 years ago) – if this continues, vests/waistcoats are not advised. Unless you're <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcaric/8379354330/">Mattias Bostrom</a>. </li>
</ul>

<h3>
The Unscheduled 📅</h3>
<ul>
<li>If possible, make breakfast plans with other Sherlockians (unless you prefer eat breakfast alone – saving energy for later conversations).</li>
<li>To some, the secret to enjoying the jam-packed weekend is to find private, unpublicized events for more intimate interactions. How to find these? “<i>You know my methods. Apply them</i>.” </li>
</ul>

<h3>
Dining 🍽️</h3>
What? You’re not getting enough food between events? Thankfully there are gaps that allow a Sherlockian to venture places on his or her own. And of course, there are plenty of restaurants in and near Grand Central Station, which is in great proximity to the Yale Club and the Roosevelt Hotel.<br />
<ul>
<li>Several Sherlockians like to go to the <b><a href="http://www.oysterbarny.com/">Oyster Bar</a></b> for dinner after the Thursday night lecture. </li>
<li>There is <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/qAPNSvtgGTspvz4y9" target="_blank">Urban Space</a> food court across the street from the Roosevelt, at Vanderbilt and East 45th Street, and of course Starbucks in the station and at nearly every corner. </li>
<li>For a more comprehensive listing of eateries nearby, <a href="http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2013/07/where-to-eat-near-grand-central-station-nyc.html" target="_blank">Serious Eats has a guide</a> that breaks them down by category and of course <a href="http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=restaurants+near+grand+central&find_loc=New+York%2C+NY%2C+USA" target="_blank">Yelp has many suggestions</a> as well. </li>
<li>And heaven forbid, don't forget about the <a href="http://www.redflamenyc.com/">Red Flame</a>, the perennial favorite next door to the Algonquin Hotel on W. 44th Street.</li>
</ul>

Whether you're in New York for the festivities or sequestered at home, it might be worthwhile to follow along online. Some ways to do that:<br />

An Implicit Influence on Edgar W. Smith

Most of us are familiar with Edgar W. Smith. He served as the second head of the Baker Street Irregulars, acting as an able administrator from 1940-1960, after he convinced Christopher Morley to take the organization out of its three-year hibernation (<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/03/the-1936-bsi-dinner.html" target="_blank">1936</a> was the last dinner before the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/03/the-1940-bsi-dinner.html" target="_blank">1940 dinner</a>).<br />
<br />
Smith was also the first editor of <i><a href="http://ihose.co/BSJ" target="_blank">The Baker Street Journal</a></i>, the quarterly publication of Sherlockian work that he and Ben Abramson birthed in 1946. In the Old Series (the 13 issues that ran from 1946-1948), Smith created the tradition of "The Editor's Gas-Lamp," which continues to this day.<br />
<br />
His writing belied a master wordsmith, just as he applied his administrative acumen from the industrial world to the BSI. His language was very nearly like poetry, but without being flowery. Smith's writing conjured powerful images while not seeming as if it was trying too hard. In short, each of his essays were masterpieces.<br />
<br />
What could be called Smith's cornerstone essay was his Gas-Lamp titled "<b><a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/203991035/The-Implicit-Holmes?ad_group=xxc1xx&campaign=VigLink&medium=affiliate&source=hp_affiliate" target="_blank">The Implicit Holmes</a></b>" (BSJ OS Vol. 1, No. 2, April 1946). In it, he asked  “What is it that we love in Sherlock Holmes? And then he went on to artfully describe the surroundings in which Holmes found himself:<br />

<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>"We love the times in which he lived, of course: the half-remembered, half-forgotten times of snug Victorian illusion, of gaslit comfort and contentment, of perfect dignity and grace. The world was poised precariously in balance, and rude disturbances were coming with the years; but those who moved upon the scene were very sure that all was well: that nothing ever would be any worse nor ever could be any better. There was no threat to righteousness and justice and the cause of peace on earth except from such as Moriarty and the lesser villains in his train. The cycle of events had come full turn, and the times were ripe for living – and for being lost. It is because their loss was suffered before they had been fully lived that they are times to which our hearts and longings belong. </blockquote>

Simply put, this is beautiful, simple, and evocative language. For this editor at least, it always provides something to aspire to.</div>

In <a href="https://amzn.to/2PpcwJa" style="font-style: italic;" target="_blank">Irregular Records of the Early Forties</a> by Jon Lellenberg (published in 1991 for the <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/tag/history/" target="_blank">BSI Press History</a> series), Peter B. Spivak wrote a chapter titled "Baker Street Industrialist," which was a deeper look at Smith's career at General Motors. It seems that his facility with the language was evident there as well, as he was said to be </div>

"unrivalled in his ability to make what was technical seem sensible and interesting to those who read it. He wrote in a style which made it easier for GM's large and growing staff to understand and follow the policies and future plans of General Motors. The company's archives describe him as 'a great speechwriter.' In a company which has a tradition of excellent speechwriters, Smith's style stands out, and is remembered even though he has been away from the company for well over thirty years."</blockquote>

How wonderful that Sherlockians continue to be the beneficiary of Edgar Smith's literary talents, preserved for future generations thanks to his Pamphlet House publications, the <i>Baker Street Journal</i>, and <i>Profile by Gaslight</i> which Smith edited.</div>

<b>"we saw a sudden light" [SPEC]</b></h3>
We've owned a few copies of the Heritage Press edition of the Sherlock Holmes stories for a while. This is the three-volume set that comes in black slipcases, with a raised cameo of Frederic Dorr Steele's profile of Sherlock Holmes on the cover. It was the definitive text, corrected and edited by Edgar Smith, and released between 1950 and 1952.<br />
<br />
It's one of those volumes of the Canon that we had to have, but didn't pay much attention to the text of it because...well, these are the same 60 stories we have in the Doubleday, Annotated, Oxford, John Murray and other editions that we own.<br />
<br />
Recently, we were able to add the Easton Press updated vesion to that set (printed in 1981). The covers are black with three gilt icons on the covers and spine: one volume has a magnifying glass, another a deerstalker, and the third a pipe. Clearly, adding this to our library was for the visual appeal.<br />

Despite that singular appeal, we opened up the first volume and spent some time with the introduction by Vincent Starrett (reprinted from the Heritage Press edition). It's such a pleasure to lose oneself in the joy and wonder of those early Sherlockian giants!<br />
<br />
The Starrett essay had a ring of familiarity to it, though. Pulling another book from our collection, we realized it almost instantly: it was an excerpt and agglomeration of material from <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2E2mTNA" target="_blank">The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</a></i>, published in 1933. (For an in-depth look at <i>The Private Life</i>, please see <a href="http://www.vincentstarrett.com/blog/2018/8/12/y9vshkn40quitqti37j7hj11ikaykh" target="_blank">Ray Betzner's 17-part series</a> on VincentStarrett.com.)<br />
<br />
One paragraph stood out to us from the introduction, appearing as the final paragraph of <i>The Private Life</i> from the chapter titled "No. 221B Baker Street." See if it has a familiar ring to it:<br />

"And who is Sherlock Holmes? The spirit in a town and of a time. He is the fog in that crying old street, Baker Street; the glow of sea coal in the grates, where the English servant bring in to you tea and muffins, and snug napkins of odorous toast. He is...the mystery of the house opposite; of the grubby little shop around the corner you noticed and wondered about; of the old, old lady, half perceived in her shining brougham, who passes through empty Eaton Square every Wednesday afternoon. Sherlock is he who answers when you ask the air, Who lives there, I wonder! What is the story behind that drawn blind in London?...From him you may expect something much too subtle to be advertised. Cabs slurring through the mud, sounds and sights and presences of the old nineties in Baker Street — that time and that place which above all thought itself final, and that nothing different was ever going to happen again."</blockquote>

Starrett credits this quote to <b>William Bolitho</b>: <i>The Last Bow</i>.<br />
<br />
To us, phrases like "snug napkins," "half perceived," and "cabs slurring through the mud" are eerily similar to "snug Victorian illusion," "half-remembered, half-forgot," and "cabs rolled up before a certain door." While they aren't exactly the same, there's enough there that made Bolitho's paragraph jump out to us as a possible influence on Smith's "The Implicit Holmes."<br />
<br />
Who was Bolitho and how likely would it have been that he entered into the mind of Edgar Smith before Smith penned his essay?<br />
<br />

<h3>
<b>"South African securities" [SOLI]</b></h3>
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Bolitho_Ryall" target="_blank">William Bolitho Ryall</a> was a South African journalist who wrote under the name William Bolitho. He was among one of 16 soldiers who were buried alive in a mine explosion in Somme in 1916, of which he was the sole survivor.<br />
<br />
Following the war, he became the Paris correspondent for the <i>Manchester Guardian</i>, and eventually came to New York in 1928. He had a column in the <i>New York World</i> three times a week. His book <i>Twelve Against the Gods</i> was an instant bestseller in 1929, when Ryall was also involved in overseeing a London production of his play <i>Overture</i>.<br />
<br />
With a vested interest in the theater, it's no surprise then that William Bolitho would have been well aware of <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2018/04/remembering-william-gillette.html" target="_blank">William Gillette</a>, the foremost portrayer of Sherlock Holmes at the time.<br />
<br />
In fact, in the bibliography of <i>The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes</i>, we find this citation for Bolitho's quote:<br />

Edgar Smith, that Baker Street Industrialist, whose career in communications at General Motors placed him in New York at <a href="https://www.skyscrapercenter.com/building/1775-broadway/19634" target="_blank">1775 Broadway</a>, most certainly would have been a reader of the <i>New York World</i>. And Edgar Smith, founding editor of the <i>Baker Street Journal</i> and <i>Profile by Gaslight</i>, second leader of the Baker Street Irregulars, and publisher of the Pamphlet House, would have undoubtedly followed the final appearances of William Gillette on stage.<br />
<br />
Could these two separate near-certainties have intersected? Could Smith have read Bolitho's piece and subconsciously used similar words and structure?<br />
<br />
It's just as likely that Smith read the excerpt in Starrett's <i>Private Life</i>, as Smith and Starrett were regular correspondents in the 1930s and 1940s. In fact, it was Starrett who suggested that Smith get involved with the Baker Street Irregulars. To say that Smith held Starrett in high regard is an understatement. Hey, when someone dedicates the poem "221B" to you, what more is there to say?<br />
<br />
As early as his high school years, his lifelong friend noted that Smith "<a href="https://www.bsiarchivalhistory.org/BSI_Archival_History/EWS_pt._1.html" target="_blank">had developed a retentive memory</a>."<br />
<br />
Like any good speechwriter, Smith's influences came from a variety of sources. We absorb what we read — and that in turn influences how we think and how we write. We like to think that Smith read Bolitho's essay and later Starrett's book, searing the vision into his brain.<br />
<br />
And seven decades later, we're the beneficiaries of it.<br />

We love the idea of keeping the memory of Sherlock Holmes alive every day. Invitations to the <a href="http://bsiweekend.com/" target="_blank">Baker Street Irregulars Weekend</a> in New York have been sent, and the public website was just updated.<br />

Whenever folks get their invitations, there's usually a sense of surprise, relief and even trepidation. Yes, trepidation. For some people, attending the Weekend is a difficult and onerous task.<br />
<br />
Some simply don't like to be around crowds, or perhaps detest the (often) harsh weather of New York in January. Others boycott for personal reasons. But there are some who simply can't afford the price of the accumulated events and the travel required to get there.<br />
<br />

<b>The John H. Watson Fund</b></h2>
In the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s under Tom Stix, Jr.'s ("The Norwood Builder") term as Wiggins of <a href="http://bakerstreetirregulars.com/" target="_blank">the Baker Street Irregulars</a>, Tom created the <b>Dr. John H. Watson Fund</b>, a financial assistance package for the BSI Weekend, and credited it as his most proud achievement of leading the BSI.<br />
<br />

It is a wonderful resource that enables more people to enjoy one of the most important aspects of our hobby: spending time in the company of like-minded people. And while there are plenty of opportunities around the world to do this on a local level, the BSI Weekend happens just once a year and celebrates a long-standing tradition (85 years!) that was started by Christopher Morley.</div>

Each year, the Fund is self-liquidating, meaning that assistance is granted to whatever extent is possible to the supplicants, and that generous Sherlockians are responsible for replenishing it every year. Traditionally this was done through simple check-writing, but then the BSI Cocktail Reception added <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/bsi-weekend/" target="_blank">an auction and drawing</a>, which also raise money for the Fund. Raffle tickets are sold throughout the weekend for some choice items and Peter Blau, BSI ("Black Peter") holds forth as an auctioneer nonpareil.<br />

We've received news from Ashley Polasek (whom you may recall from <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose177" target="_blank">Episode 177: Being Sherlock)</a> that she is launching a new publication: <i>The Conan Doyle Review</i>.<br />
<br />
You might be asking, "Is this necessary?" Well, hold that thought for a moment. A quick word about where we are.<br />
<br />
As you're probably aware, there is the <a href="http://www.acdfriends.org/" target="_blank">Friends of the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection</a>, a group specifically focused on the support of said collection at the Toronto Public Library.<br />
<br />
Separately, <b>The Arthur Conan Doyle Society</b> was established by Christopher Roden, BSI ("Sir Henry Baskerville") and Barbara Roden, BSI ("Beryl Stapleton"), but is now defunct. From the late 1980s through the late 1990s, they published <i>The Parish Magazine</i>, the newsletter of the Arthur Conan Doyle Society and <i>ACD: The Journal of the Arthur Conan Doyle Society</i>.<br />
<br />
But for 20 years, there has been nothing in terms of a dedicated place for scholarship about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.<br />
<br />
Certainly the Sherlockian and Doylean communities do not lack for publications, in terms of the traditional (journals, books, and newsletters) and the new (online outlets to discuss publications past an present).<br />
<br />
Dr. Polasek raises an excellent point about the scholarship that's doing nothing in the night-time:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"We don’t have a home specifically for peer-reviewed scholarship. This is in spite of the number of academics we have in our ranks, and in spite of the fact that a lot of scholars who aren’t part of the Sherlockian community write on Conan Doyle’s life and works. Most Sherlockians miss those articles because they appear scattered in discipline-specific academic journals with small, specialist readerships."</blockquote>
<br />
Therefore, she is establishing <i>The Conan Doyle Review</i> as<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"A home for scholars across disciplines to publish work on Conan Doyle’s life, works, creative afterlives, and cultural legacies in a journal with academic rigor and professional distinction—a journal that welcomes readers who don’t necessarily research and write such articles themselves, but would nevertheless be interested in reading them. The Conan Doyle Review will sit at the intersection of the academic, Sherlockian, and Doylean worlds."</blockquote>

Today, Polasek announced the launch of <i>The Conan Doyle R</i><i>eview</i>. She'll be serving as Founding Editor-in-Chief. <b>Dr. Kate Brombley</b> will be the Senior Associate Editor and <b>Mary Alcaro</b> is the Associate Editor.<br />
<br />
The editorial board is growing and the team will be working through the winter and spring to set up its peer-review management system, promote the journal’s mission, advertise, and raise funds.<br />
<br />
The expectation is that they'll begin accepting submissions from independent scholars in the summer and will publish the first issue in the spring of 2021.<br />

When we think of Sherlock Holmes, there are two visions that come to mind: one is with the trusty and stalwart Dr. Watson by his side; the other is sitting alone in his Baker Street flat, smoking and thinking through a knotty problem.<br />
<br />
Throughout much of his career, Holmes had Watson along as a trusted companion and biographer. Only occasionally did Watson leave for married life and his medical practice – but even then, Holmes would summon him to join a case ("Come at once if convenient – if inconvenient, come all the same." [CREE]).<br />
<br />
It's unusual – even unsettling – that in "The Blanched Soldier" do we find Holmes, who narrates that tale himself, sharing his feelings about Watson's absence:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"The good Watson had at that time deserted me for a wife, the only selfish action which I can recall in our association. I was alone."</blockquote>
The last three words in particular note how deeply it affected him.<br />
<br />
The dates in those two stories mentioned above (BLAN, CREE) are of particular interest. Holmes's disappointment in Watson's absence in "The Blanched Soldier" is self-reported as January 1903. It must have been a fairly fresh wound, with Watson getting married (a second time?) in late 1902.<br />
<br />
In <i><a href="https://amzn.to/33CIuqj" target="_blank">Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street</a></i>, William S. Baring-Gould dates it as October 1902. (He also claims it was Watson's <i>third</i> marriage.)<br />
<br />
But when we get to "The Creeping Man," Watson – and the internal dates that help Holmes pinpoint the nighttime activity – indicate that this case occurred in September 1903. By that time, Holmes had gotten over his disappointment and was rather curt with Watson, perhaps indicating that he was done with the self-pity and simply and unemotionally requested his comrade along for the adventure.<br />
<br />
Whatever happened in those ensuing months, we can only hazard a guess. Meanwhile, the boys of Baker Street Elementary are grappling with the pangs of loneliness...<br />

Sherlock Holmes and the legal profession are no strangers. Indeed, Holmes himself understood the law; recall Watson's list "<i>Sherlock Holmes</i>—his limits" in which Watson wrote that Holmes had "a good practical knowledge of British law."<br />
<br />
The Sherlockian world is no stranger to legal wranglings, going back to the Conan Doyle sons Denis and his hothead brother Adrian (to whom the head of the BSI at the time referred as "Adrenaline"), who contested the positioning of their father as the Literary Agent by the tongue-in-cheek Irregulars.<br />
<br />
And Sherlockians are fortunate to have a number of legal minds within the ranks of the Irregulars who can lend themselves to judicial-Sherlockian matters, including the likes of Leslie S. Klinger, Albert Rosenblatt, Andrew Peck, Betsy Rosenblatt, and many more. In fact, you can see the application of some of their work in <i><a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2018/12/28/canon-law/">Canon Law</a></i> by the BSI Press.<br />

"Women?" we hear you asking? Yes, a number of women correctly answered the famous <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/08/may-be-mere-intellectual-puzzle-to-you_28.html#.XdAyvVdKjb0">crossword puzzle</a> that was something of an entrance exam to the BSI in its formative year. <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose89">Women were finally recognized as members in 1991</a>.<br />

Burt and Scott ventured to Bloomington, Indiana for the Baker Street Irregulars' conference "Building an Archive" at the Lilly Library at Indiana University. It was an event filled with conversations and exhibitions that delighted all, collectors or not.<br />
<br />
The event was the celebration of the BSI Archive officially opening at the Lilly. It featured a walk-through the exhibition "The History of the BSI Through 221 Objects" and a number of panels about the archive, collecting, collectors and more.<br />
<br />
We bring you some of the voices from the event, including a number of presenters, the informed staff of the Lilly, the conference organizers, and more.
