Sherlock Holmes and the legal profession are no strangers. Indeed, Holmes himself understood the law; recall Watson's list "<i>Sherlock Holmes</i>—his limits" in which Watson wrote that Holmes had "a good practical knowledge of British law."<br />
<br />
The Sherlockian world is no stranger to legal wranglings, going back to the Conan Doyle sons Denis and his hothead brother Adrian (to whom the head of the BSI at the time referred as "Adrenaline"), who contested the positioning of their father as the Literary Agent by the tongue-in-cheek Irregulars.<br />
<br />
And Sherlockians are fortunate to have a number of legal minds within the ranks of the Irregulars who can lend themselves to judicial-Sherlockian matters, including the likes of Leslie S. Klinger, Albert Rosenblatt, Andrew Peck, Betsy Rosenblatt, and many more. "Women?" we hear you asking? Yes, a number of women correctly answered the famous <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2006/08/may-be-mere-intellectual-puzzle-to-you_28.html#.XdAyvVdKjb0">crossword puzzle</a> that was something of an entrance exam to the BSI in its formative year. <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose89">Women were finally recognized as members in 1991</a>.<br />
<br />
According to the Baker Street Irregulars website:<br />

"This book presents capsule biographies and photographs of the earliest, “aboriginal,” Irregulars, — many of them remarkably accomplished individuals — including heretofore obscure solvers of the crossword puzzle that conferred membership to a fortunate few."</blockquote>
Harrison (Terry) and Linda have created sections that recognize the different levels of involvement of these individuals over time: <b>The Stalwarts</b>, <b>Dinner Attendees</b>, <b>The Irregular Irregulars</b>, and <b>Crossword Puzzle Solvers</b>.<br />

Reading through these summaries of their lives brings a number of surprises (at least to this writer).<br />

Today marks what would have been Jeremy Brett's 86th birthday. It seems unthinkable to imagine the definitive Sherlock Holmes from the Granada productions of the 1980s and 1990s as an octogenarian, and even more unthinkable that it has been 24 years since he left us.<br />
<br />
For an entire generation (perhaps more!), Jeremy Brett <i>is</i> Sherlock Holmes. It's difficult to underestimate his impact on Sherlockians, as his imagery and influence is still prevalent today. Imagine what his impact would have been if we had the Internet and social media with us during the run of the Granada series.<br />

Both are excellent accounts behind the scenes of the show and the actor.<br />

For those following these pages, next weekend marks the <a href="http://bsiarchivelilly.org/">BSI Archive event</a> at the Lilly Library at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.<br />

The <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/">BSI Archive</a> itself is an important repository of items related to the history of the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetirregulars.com/">Baker Street Irregulars</a>, the foremost literary society dedicated to Sherlock Holmes.<br />

And celebrating its new location will include a special exhibit of 221 items of significance from the collection. What will be among those 221 pieces? Glen Miranker, BSI ("<i>The Origin of Tree Worship</i>") shared some of those secrets, as well as the significance of the Lilly Library in <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose175">Episode 175: Building an Archive</a>.<br />

Usually things run like clockwork around these parts. But with both Burt and Scott on the road for work, and trying to coordinate daytime, evening, and even weekend schedules with various guests, sometimes it doesn't work out.<br />

So, we're returning to our roots and just having a chat with each other. While it's the largest of the 48 contiguous states on the USA, Texas warrants only one mention in the Sherlock Holmes stories. The ship that carried the perpetrators of the Openshaw murders was named <i>Lone Star</i>, and Holmes recognized its significance:<br />

"...the name is that which is given to one of the states of the Union."</blockquote>
Watson replied, "Texas, I think."<br />

Holmes clearly didn't care:<br />

“I was not and am not sure which; but I knew that the ship must have an American origin.”</blockquote>
Well! Texas is having none of that. <a href="https://www.dfw-sherlock.org/about.html">The Crew of the Barque Lone Star</a> was founded in 1972 as a Sherlockian society in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and after having revived itself in 1996, is a thriving group. Their members are the very crew that bring us Baker Street Elementary every two weeks.<br />
<br />
But Dallas is also the site of <a href="https://www.bouchercon2019.com/">Bouchercon 2019</a>, the annual mystery conference named for Anthony Boucher, BSI ("<i>The Valley of Fear</i>"). Boucher was an eminent Sherlockian of his time, based in San Francisco. Most famously he wrote scripts for the Basil Rathbone / Nigel Bruce radio series <i>The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>. He received his investiture in the Baker Street Irregulars in 1949.<br />

Virtually every Sherlockian knows the poem "<a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2013/10/celebrate-national-poetry-day.html#.XarWOuhKjb0">221B</a>" by Vincent Starrett, BSI ("<i>A Study in Scarlet</i>").<br />
<br />
Starrett was one of the giants in the early Sherlockian world, and his works are still remembered today. Some of them (particularly his non-Sherlockian work) may be unfamiliar to many, but that's been changing in recent years, thanks to the intrepid and tireless efforts of Ray Betzner, BSI ("The Agony Column").<br />
<br />
Ray writes and edits <b><a href="http://www.vincentstarrett.com/">Studies in Starrett</a></b>, the blog dedicated to exploring the life and works of Charles Vincent Emerson Starrett. Ray is probably the foremost expert on Vincent Starrett, along with Susan Rice, BSI ("Beeswing"). You may recall that the pair appeared on <a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2014/02/episode-61-private-life-of-vincent.html#.XarWPuhKjb0">I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere Episode 61: The Private Life of Vincent Starrett</a>.<br />
<br />
Ray's work on Studies in Starrett has made it abundantly clear how much passion he has for his subject and how much enjoyment he derives from it. Through meticulous research — and a little Sherlockian deduction — Ray is able to discern details about books, inscriptions, and other related items that are part of the Starrettian lore.<br />

<b>The Netflix of Sherlockian Blogs</b></h2>
Today, Ray launched a series of entries all about the origins of what it probably Vincent Starrett's most famous work among Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts: his iconic poem from 1942 titled "221B."<br />
<br />
This is a poem that is almost universally read at Sherlockian gatherings. The line "and it is always 1895" has become synonymous with the time and place of Sherlock Holmes, and at this point is nearly Canonical in its usage and recognition.<br />
<br />
Ray has written eleven chapters that chronicle the poem, from a background of the time and place in which it was written, to Starrett's struggles and hopes and his love for Sherlock Holmes, early origins of the verses, its dedication and first appearance, and its spread and ultimate fame.<br />

The chapters are laid out below, each one seamlessly leading to the next. They are amply complemented with illustrations, scans, manuscripts, photos, and even audio clips. It's a delightful multimedia journey through Starrett's work.<br />

The case takes us to January of 1905, when Holmes and Watson are summoned by Mycroft to undertake a clandestine investigation. A British Secret Service agent was found floating in the Thames with a manuscript smuggled into England that cost her life. The pages are supposedly the minutes of the meeting of a secret group intent on taking over the world: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Holmes and Watson are sent to determine whether it's a hoax, what the perpetrators are trying to accomplish, and why they want to keep their work out of the hands of the Secret Service.<br />

What's different this time around, some 19 years after his previous Holmes novel? Where did he get his inspiration? We talk to Nick about these things, plus his view of storytelling. As scholars of the Holmes canon, many Sherlockians often find themselves exploring the other literary work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Despite the canon being his “highlight,” there are many intriguing novels and stories that highlight Arthur Conan Doyle’s writing style.<br />

Two such examples are found in Elizabeth Crowen’s novels in the <b>Time Traveler Professor</b> series: <i><a href="https://amzn.to/35tFf6O" target="_blank">Silent Meridian</a></i> and the recently published follow up <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2qbTrRN" target="_blank">A Pocketful of Lodestones</a></i>.<br />
<br />
Both books center around John Patrick Scott, a man who partners with Conan Doyle around issues of spiritualism...and time travel. <i><b>Silent Meridian</b></i> consists of a series of adventures in time travel with a healthy dose of intrigue (including a shift in Scott’s relationship to Conan Doyle, the activities around a mysterious red book, and shifting encounters with a variety of Victorian-era historical figures).<br />
<br />
As the initial entry into the series, <i><b>Silent Meridian</b></i> reads more like several vignettes rather than a single novel, but that plays to Crowen’s strength as a writer. Ideas, plot strands, and characters are woven into the narrative in prose that reads like an approximation of Conan Doyle’s style yet maintaining a unique tone and voice.<br />

But <i><b>A Pocketful of Lodestones</b></i>, the second book, is where Elizabeth Crowens solidifies her voice and vision. Building on the events of <i>Silent Meridian</i>, Crowens crafts a more cohesive story by documenting Scott’s activities during World War I. Both books have a unique charm due to their wide panoply of clever and imaginative ideas that never feel forced or self-conscious. Elizabeth Crowens tells a very unique story across both volumes that serves as a delightful, enjoyable read.<br />
<br />
One of the delights of the book is how Crowens uses Arthur Conan Doyle as one of the lead characters. Although many Sherlockian pastiches integrate historical characters into their tales, Crowens’ inclusion of Conan Doyle never feels forced — in fact, Conan Doyle becomes a very intriguing character throughout both books.<br />
<br />
Although difficult to explain without spoiling, some of the events surrounding Scott’s and Conan Doyle’s relationship will be especially intriguing to Sherlockians. (And yes, Sherlock Holmes plays a key role throughout both books, but not in the way you might imagine). And there’s a passage in <i>A Pocketful of Lodestones</i> that will have you rethinking—and possibly revisiting—Conan Doyle’s work on <i>The Lost World</i>.<br />

Both books in the Time Traveler Professor series are available in <a href="https://amzn.to/2VFZVUH" target="_blank">softcover</a> and <a href="https://amzn.to/35vXcBz" target="_blank">Kindle</a> form and both books provide for great, pleasurable reading.<br />
<br />
Elizabeth Crowens deserves kudos for crafting a unique story through both <i>Silent Meridian</i> and <i>A Pocketful of Lodestones</i>, and will make you eager to catch a potential volume three. <br />

Early on in the Sherlock Holmes stories, we learn about Sherlock Holmes's aptitude with regard to philosophy. In his famous list titled "<i>Sherlock Holmes</i>—his limits," Watson lays out Holmes's strengths and weaknesses.<br />
<br />
Holmes's philosophical bent was the second item on Watson's list, and Holmes didn't fare well:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
2. [Knowledge of] Philosophy.—Nil.</blockquote>
<br />
And yet, he didn't have difficulty in defeating Professor Moriarty, who, as a professor of mathematics, Holmes also called "a genius, a philosophy, an abstract thinker." [FINA]<br />
<br />
Perhaps because Holmes himself was also an abstract thinker.<br />
<br />
Yes, he relied on data to form his opinions (“Data! data! data!” he cried impatiently. “I can’t make bricks without clay.” [COPP]), but he also was imaginative enough to consider different perspectives or possibilities that didn't occur to the traditional police.<br />
<br />
Take "Silver Blaze" for example. Holmes knew to look for the wax vesta that was buried in the mud, he observed animals (the dog, the sheep, etc.), and had this to say about the inspector who was in charge of the case:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“Inspector Gregory, to whom the case has been committed, is an extremely competent officer. Were he but gifted with <i>imagination </i>he might rise to great heights in his profession.” [Emphasis ours.]</blockquote>
We're reminded of a quote from <i>Young Sherlock Holmes</i>:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"A great detective relies on perception, intelligence, and imagination."</blockquote>
<br />
And in that triumvirate of traits is much of what makes up a philosopher's approach.<br />
<br />
It's difficult to imagine Sherlock Holmes applying reason and perspective without using philosophy. Perhaps he picked up what he knew at Baker Street Elementary...</div>

Nearly a year and a half ago, we shared <b><a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2018/07/remembering-joel-senter.html#.XZf4TkZKjb0" target="_blank">a remembrance of Joel Senter</a></b>, founder of the online Sherlockian shopping site Classic Specialties. His widow Carolyn wanted to do something to remember him to the Sherlockian world as well and approached the <a href="http://www.beaconsociety.com/" target="_blank">Beacon Society</a> to express her desire.<br />

If you know the Beacon Society as we do (as co-founder and first Head-Light, I qualify), you'll know that its leadership is made up of the most selfless, creative and generous people of our corner of the world.<br />
<br />
They decided, thanks to generous contributions to people from around the world who knew Joel, to endow the <b><a href="http://www.beaconsociety.com/joel-senter-essay-contest.html">R. Joel Senter, Sr. Essay Contest</a></b>. The essay contest brings together two worlds that meant so much to Joel: education and the great detective.<br />
<br />
Designed for students <b>between 4th and 12th grades</b> who have an interest in Sherlock Holmes, the award will be granted in three categories (based on grade level) for an essay concerning one of the selected stories authored by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.<br />
<br />
<br />
The primary rules for entering the contest:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Eligible entrants must be students in 4th to 12th grade in the United States and Canada.</li>
<li>Each Entrant must have an adult sponsor, 21 years of age or older (parent, teacher or family friend).</li>
<li>Sponsors may not write or edit the essay for Entrants. The essays must be entirely the work of the students.</li>
<li>The entrant must complete and submit the cover sheet/entry form and include it with the essay.</li>
<li>Sponsors and Entrants should read the section of the booklet for their grade, entitled Essay Questions carefully before starting the essay.</li>

<li><b><a href="http://www.beaconsociety.com/uploads/3/7/3/8/37380505/joel_senter_essay_content_--_7th-9th_grade_--_the_copper_beeches.pdf">7th to 9th Grade</a></b> – Essay based on “The Adventure of the Copper Beeches” from <i>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>. Essay length: 500 words minimum; approximate maximum: 750 words.</li>
<li><b><a href="http://www.beaconsociety.com/uploads/3/7/3/8/37380505/joel_senter_essay_content_--_10th-12th_grade_--_the_greek_interpreter.pdf">10th to 12th Grade</a></b> – Essay based on “The Greek Interpreter” from <i>The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes</i>. Essay length: 750 words minimum; approximate maximum: 1000 words.</li>

Prizes for each category are a plaque, plus: $300 cash (1st prize); $200 cash (2nd prize); $100 cash (3rd prize).<br />
