Sherlock Holmes's clients, and even Dr. Watson on occasion, thought that the conclusions he drew were otherwise impossible to attain. Holmes of course set them straight with his explanation of the details that he observed. But to the mere common folk, it might appear as witchcraft or sorcery.<br /> <br /> If we look throughout the Canon, there are a number of mentions of the cultish. There are but two concerning witchcraft, however. For example, when Inspector MacDonald sees the message that Holmes deciphered in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>, he said,<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> “Birlstone! What’s this, Mr. Holmes? Man, it’s <b>witchcraft</b>! Where in the name of all that is wonderful did you get those names?”</blockquote> In "Shoscombe Old Place," the reference was more to the appearance of a corpse:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> He turned and tore open the coffin-lid behind him. In the glare of the lantern I saw a body swathed in a sheet from head to foot, with dreadful, <b>witch-like</b> features, all nose and chin, projecting at one end, the dim, glazed eyes staring from a discoloured and crumbling face.</blockquote> However, turning away from the distaff side and instead searching for the term "wizard, we're rewarded with no fewer than four entries in the Sherlock Holmes stories:<br /> Inspector Hopkins in "The Abbey Grange":<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> “I believe that you are a <b>wizard</b>, Mr. Holmes. I really do sometimes think that you have powers that are not human. Now, how on earth could you know that the stolen silver was at the bottom of that pond?” </blockquote> <br /> The Right Honourable Trelawney Hope in "The Second Stain":<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> “Thank you! Indeed, Holmes and Watson toss around the words "treason" and "traitor" throughout the Bruce-Partington tale, referring to the deeds of the unexpected villain who stole the secret submarine plans and attempted to sell them to European spies. <br /><br />"To treason," Holmes tells the perpetrator at the climactic point of the story, "you added the more terrible crime of murder." The reply? "Before God I swear that I did not!" True enough, for it turns out that he didn't, himself, commit the murder; and stealing government documents, while it may be espionage, isn't necessarily treason.<br /><br />British legislation on the matter dates back to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treason_Act_1351">Treason Act of 1351</a>, still in effect though many times amended. This law offers many ways of committing treason, from attempting to kill the sovereign (the King or Queen), to violating the sovereign's eldest daughter, using force or other constraint "to intimidate or overawe both Houses or either House of Parliament," and, most important, "adhering to the sovereign's enemies, giving them aid and comfort." To this day, the authors of pastiches love to see Sherlock Holmes battling treason and espionage — and, most of all, attempts to kill the sovereign. But possibly they, too, are a little hazy about what treason is.<br /><br />The phrase about "adhering" to enemies of the state was little changed when it was incorporated into <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_Three_of_the_United_States_Constitution#Section_3:_Treason">Article III, Section 3</a> of the Constitution of the United States: "Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort." This definition is elaborated, but not much, in the relevant statute, <a href="https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2381">18 US Code chapter 115 s.2381</a>. <br /><br />It was not felt necessary to make provisions in the Constitution about the sovereign's eldest daughter, and assassinating a President of the United States is not treason (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leon_Czolgosz">Leon Czolgosz</a>, the most recent presidential assassin to face trial, was convicted of murder under New York law).<br /><br />As for the lifting of those Bruce-Partington plans, stealing and spying are not "levying war," and since the story is taking place in peacetime, it would be difficult to argue that the agent Hugo Oberstein represents any particular "enemies" to whom the villain is adhering. Declare him guilty of theft and espionage, then, but not, by American standards, guilty of treason, and be grateful for a constitutional clause designed to protect the weak and misguided as well as the strong and upright. <br /><br />I suppose it might be possible to argue under British law that the sovereign can have "enemies" even in peacetime, but if there is case law to that effect, it doesn't jump out at the casual researcher. The most recent people to be convicted of treason in Britain committed their evil deeds during World War II (they include <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Joyce">William Joyce</a>, "Lord Haw-Haw"), and the most famous in modern times was Arthur Conan Doyle's acquaintance <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Casement">Roger Casement</a> during World War I. In the United States, similarly, there were a few cases after World War II. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_and_Ethel_Rosenberg">Julius and Ethel Rosenberg</a>, executed in 1953, were convicted of espionage.<br /><br />The villain in "The Bruce-Partington Plans" should have been sentenced to death if he was indeed guilty of treason, but Watson's narrative makes clear that he was not: he "died in prison towards the end of the second year of his sentence." Probably not treason then, but espionage, although it too could bring the death penalty, as could just three other crimes: murder, arson in Her Majesty's dockyards, and piracy.<br /><br />It is notable that Oberstein was sentenced to fifteen years in prison, a reminder that foreigners may spy but cannot be guilty of treason, a crime of betrayal. It is notable also that Oberstein gets minor mention in another canonical story, "The Second Stain," in which another British subject, Lady Hilda Trelawney Hope, turns over government documents to another foreign spy. One wonders exactly why Sherlock Holmes did not accuse her of treason too. <br /><br /><div> --</div> <div> <br /></div>

Really bored. So bored that he doesn't hesitate to drag Watson into a travelling freak show while they're out for a walk. They see a bizarre creature in a cage, one whose escape happens to coincide with a string of savage deaths in the area. In order to stop the killings, Holmes has to discover the creature's origins.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> <b>2.</b> The idea for the story comes from <i>The Island of Dr. Moreau</i>. I wanted to write something a little different, a little bizarre, and my mind instantly went to Moreau. It's delightfully terrifying, and almost all of the horror comes from the humans rather than the "monsters." The problem with a Moreau-based story was that I was not comfortable using Holmes as a stand-in for the protagonist, or somehow putting Holmes and/or Watson on the island, but I loved the idea of Sherlock Holmes tackling the ideas of that novel, and so instead of putting Holmes on the island, I brought the island to Holmes. I tried to give the same attention to the horrors of mankind as Wells did in his story, but tempered down to a more Doylean attitude, plus a healthy dose of good-old Watson optimism.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> <b>3.</b> I've always loved crossover Sherlockiana. Put Holmes in the future, in the past, on another planet, meeting any figure of literature or history you can think of, and I'll read it. That doesn't mean I'll like it, I do have standards, but I'll certainly read it at least once. When presented with the opportunity to participate with a collection of tales combining the greatest detective with one of the fathers of science fiction, how could I say no?</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> <b>4.</b> I'm currently working on the third book of my sci-fi mystery series "The Adventures of Watts and Sherlock," following the lives of a doctor and a detective solving crimes in a bleak futuristic world. Also, rather than utterly rework Holmes, in cases like this I do enjoy sliding him just a touch outside of his original zone, enough to open up possibilities but not absolute certainties. Wells’ story, “The Country of the Blind,” merely hints at a positive outcome. We never learn whether the protagonist successfully escapes from an isolated land where everyone is blind. Despite his love for a blind woman and his early belief that “in the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king,” his plans to gain power go awry.  Once the village elders decide to put out his eyes, those strange growths on his face deemed responsible for his maddening references to something called “sight,” he concludes it’s time to flee. My story, “An Adventure in Darkness,” explains how the protagonist successfully returns to London where, to recreate his previous experience, he marries a beautiful blind woman. When violence threatens the relationship, Holmes and Watson are called in to set matters right.</div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <b>2.</b> I chose “The Country of the Blind” as my starting point for two reasons. First, I think it’s an exquisite story, a fantasy that readers can relate to on a literal level.  In a similar situation, wouldn’t most sighted people attempt to assert authority over those who cannot see? In fact, the set up seems typical of any situation in which an individual—however wrongly—feels stronger than everyone else.  Second, though a fable of sorts, the story takes place in a believable setting, one that doesn’t clash with the realistic world of Sherlock Holmes. Even in today’s real world, we occasionally learn of the discovery of an isolated community. Who’s not to say that hidden in the mountains of Ecuador, as in Wells' story, or somewhere else there really does live a group of blind people cut off from the rest of humanity? </div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <b>3.</b>  For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a fan of H.G. Wells. In graduate school I wrote a long, analytical paper about him called “Of Science Romances and Utopian Dreams.” (As a college freshman, I wrote a paper on Sherlock Holmes.) I've gone so far as to feature Wells as a character in my Holmes pastiche, “The Baron of Brede Place,” which is about Wells’ friend, writer Stephen Crane; and I have Wells reappear in “An Adventure in Darkness.” </div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <b>4.</b> I’m currently working on two distinctly different novels. Often playing stuffy Brits, Hillerman was a Texan through and through. And "stuffy Brit" is of course the vein in which some Sherlockians knew him.<br /> <br /> According to <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/john-hillerman-dead-magnum-pi-actor-was-84-1056800">The Hollywood Reporter</a>,<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "He landed his first professional theatrical role in Middleton, Ohio, and went on to appear in productions at The Cincinnati Playhouse; it was there that he honed his British accent and natty style." </blockquote> Aside from the long-running <i>Magnum P.I.</i> (1980-88), Hillerman was no stranger to the mystery genre. He was in the 1974 noir classic <i>Chinatown</i> and on the <i>Ellery Queen</i> TV series. For Sherlockians, he'll be remembered as Dr. John H. The Season 4 Episode 18 of <i>Magnum P.I.</i> had Higgins recalling events from 1976 when a friend from Sandhurst, David Worth (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Macnee">Patrick Macnee</a>) went to Hawaii to attend a funeral of a friend. Well, we're pleased to see that <a href="https://youtu.be/comz38kRsb0">the first trailer</a> for <i><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2296777/">Gnomeo and Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes</a></i> is out and indicates that the film will arrive in theaters in 2018.<br /> <br /> For those not familiar with the premise, Gnomeo and Juliet are two garden gnomes from the <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377981/?ref_=tt_trv_cnn">eponymous movie</a> of 2011. These delightful fixtures of gardens everywhere come to life outside of the gaze of humans, and have adventures, with music by Elton John.<br /> <br /> Paramount Animation, a division of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, is producing this film, the first animated film from MGM in a decade. It stars Johnny Depp as Sherlock Gnomes and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Dr. Watson, with Mary J. Blige as Irene. But I now have reason to think that I've been inflating my credentials all these years.<br /> <br /> The story starts in 1981, when I was was already a long-time Sherlockian but not a particularly well-known one. I'd been part of the youth movement in the 1960s, a <a href="http://www.bakerstreetirregulars.com/">Baker Street Irregular</a> since 1966, a <a href="http://torontobootmakers.com/">Bootmaker of Toronto</a> since the society was founded in 1972, and since 1979 the co-editor of the Bootmakers' magazine <i>Canadian Holmes</i>. But I didn't do much Sherlockian travelling, and of course I didn't have the continent-wide network of Sherlockian friends that the internet has now made possible.<br /> <br /> So it was kind of a big deal when I was planning a business trip to Chicago (those were the days, when my employer could afford to send me places), got in touch with somebody or other about maybe having lunch with a couple of local Sherlockians while I was there, and was pleased and intimidated to find that my visit coincided with the annual dinner of <a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/">The Hounds of the Baskerville [sic]</a>. Would I like to attend the event as a guest? Duh; yes I would.<br /> <br /> And I did, on October 5, 1981, at a place on North Wells Street called <a href="http://www.prairieghosts.com/steak_joynt.html">That Steak Joynt</a> (which itself has a rather <a href="http://www.prairieghosts.com/steak_joynt.html">mysterious history</a>). Under the leadership of <a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/biographies/#Mangler"><b>Bob Mangler</b></a>, Master of the Hounds for some forty years, the program included such things as the Hounds customarily do, and a showing of the half-hour "Silver Blaze" starring Canadian actor <b>Christopher Plummer</b>. I remember very little about the evening, to tell the truth, apart from a conversation with a young woman at my table who wanted to tell me about the limitations on women's involvement in Sherlockian matters in Chicago, a topic that I understand has not yet been exhausted 36 years later. (The Hounds didn't admit women members until a couple of decades after my visit, but women guests were welcome at its one meeting of the year. [<i>More on this in <a href="http://ihose.co/ihose130">Episode 130</a> of <b>I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere</b> - ed.</i>]) <br /> <br /> Much of what I know about the traditions of the Hounds, and indeed about the details of that 1981 dinner, is based on an admirable volume that has just been published, a "<b>75th Anniversary Edition</b>" history of the society, written half by <b><a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/biographies/#Nieminski">John Nieminski</a></b> (taking the story up to 1983) and half by the present Master, <b><a href="http://www.houndsofthebaskerville.org/biographies/#Terras">Donald Terras</a></b>. Launched at the 2017 dinner a few weeks ago, a gala <a href="http://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2017/10/episode-130-hounds-of-baskerville-sic.html">celebration of the society's dodranscentenary</a>, it tells the story in some detail from the society's 1943 founding by the great <a href="http://www.vincentstarrett.com/">Vincent Starrett</a> up to the present day. I came home from Chicago with a pewter Hounds pin (which I still wear occasionally at Sherlockian events) and the distinct impression that the Master of the Hounds had awarded me an "honorary membership" in the society. I reported briefly on my Houndship at the next meeting of the Bootmakers of Toronto, and was rewarded by a call from long-time Bootmaker (and Baker Street Irregular) David Skene-Melvin: "Now you are officially a son of a bitch!" <br /> <br /> But the aforesaid page 59 lists four people who were inducted into Hounds membership at the 1981 dinner, and none of them is me. The historian also refers to "certificates", and if my loot from that evening included a certificate of any kind, I certainly don't know where it is. From which I conclude that my "honorary" status didn't really make me a Hound, and that's a <a href="http://sherlockholmespodcast.com/">trifle</a> embarrassing, since I have been claiming ever since that I was one.<br /> <br /> But who knows? Maybe some year soon, I'll get back to Chicago on the auspicious October night, and betake myself to the annual dinner of the Hounds, and we'll see if they let me in.<br /> <br /> --<br /> <br /> <br /></div>

Until that time, he had suffered (gladly or not is open for debate) at the hands of parodists who created their own versions of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in stories, comics, plays and more.<br /> <br /> But Conan Doyle's short story "<a href="http://www.bestofsherlock.com/ref/watson-trick-manuscript.htm">How Watson Learned the Trick</a>" was a unique addition to the oeuvre in that it was created specifically for <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Mary%27s_Dolls%27_House">Queen Mary's Dolls House</a> — a project that called for top artists and craftsmen to contribute to the building of and possessions within a doll house for Queen Mary, wife of George V. Conan Doyle wrote the 503-word story, taking up 34 pages, which was bound into a tiny volume for the bookshelf of the doll house, measuring 1.5 inches high by 1.25 inches wide.<br /> <br /> The "trick" Watson supposedly learned was Holmes's methods of observation and inference, which he put to work, only to have Holmes bat down his every assumption. Sometimes, however, they're burned just a little wrong. Here are two examples.<br /> <br /> <br /> <h3> <b>"The whole bed of the ocean" [DYIN]</b></h3> There's an unsurprising tendency for Sherlockians to write about the things they themselves are interested in, no matter how unrelated to Sherlock Holmes. For years I've been telling people that there was an article somewhere, decades past, making fun of that tendency and citing the likelihood that somebody who loves deep-sea diving will ransack the Canon for proof that Mr. Holmes, too, would don diving gear and descend into the depths of the ocean.<br /> <br /> But I could never get back to that reference. Even the editor of the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/"><i>Baker Street Journal</i></a>, where I was pretty sure I had seen the passage, couldn't find it, and he is more adept than I am at searching the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/ebooks/ebsj.html">electronic edition of the BSJ</a>. (I begin to think that everybody is more adept than I am at searching the eBSJ, actually.)<br /> <br /> Well, I stumbled onto the original recently, and it turns out that nobody could find it because I was misremembering it. The key word isn't "diving," it's "fishing". The source is a letter to the editor of the BSJ from <b>Howard Brody</b>, published in 1981, who describes what he calls "the Egotistical methodology" of Sherlockian scholarship:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "I (the author of this hypothetical piece) am very interested in deep-sea fishing. I am very fond of myself and think of myself as a very sagacious and perceptive individual. I am very fond of Sherlock Holmes and think of him as a very sagacious and perceptive individual. Therefore, Sherlock Holmes must have been very interested in deep-sea fishing. Furthermore, by various mental gymnastics, I can locate a passage in the Canon to support this idea." </blockquote> He cites "A Scandal in Bohemia," where we learn that Holmes had in his index the biography of "a staff-commander who had written a monograph upon the deep sea fishes." Conclusion: "it is established as clear truth that Holmes spent every spare minute in deep-sea fishing."<br /> <h3> <b>"What perverted love can bring about" [THOR]</b></h3> My other memorable, but mis-remembered, passage was a letter to the editor complaining about references to sex. I couldn't find it in the <i>Baker Street Journal</i>, and the editor of the BSJ couldn't find it even with his electronic aids, for what turned out to be a simple reason: it didn't appear in the BSJ, but rather in the <i><a href="http://www.sherlock-holmes.org.uk/category/journal/">Sherlock Holmes Journal</a></i>, in 1979.<br /> <br /> Again, the source was a letter to the editor, this one complaining about an article on the subject of "Thor Bridge" that had appeared in the previous issue. J.B. Tatum wrote in part:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "Should I wish to read about sexual perversion and penises there are many other readily available magazines to which I might subscribe. One reason that I enjoy Sherlock Holmes so much is that… the Canon is so utterly free of such modern filth."</blockquote> <br /> It was 1979, remember, before explicit fanfic, before "consulting husbands," before <i>In Bed with Sherlock Holmes</i> — though not before Sam Rosenberg's <i>Naked Is the Best Disguise</i> or Larry Townsend's <i>The Sexual Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</i>, so Tatum was being a trifle selective.<br /> <br /> Still, his (her?) indignant protest is highly quotable, and next time I have occasion to refer to it, I'll try to get it right.<br /> <br /> <i>Image credit: Photoshop by <a href="https://twitter.com/rosie_ww">Rosie W</a> for IHOSE</i><br /> <br /> --<br /> <br />

Nobel Prize Winner Kazuo Ishiguro: Inspired by Sherlock Holmes

And there is, of course, a Sherlockian connection.<br /> <br /> <div> Ishiguro was born 1954 in Nagasaki, Japan. Six years later, his family moved to Guildford in Surrey, England, when his father began research at the National Institute of Oceanography.<br /> <br /> <div> It was in Surrey young Ishiguro first discovered Sherlock Holmes. Before he found the Holmes books in the local library he had, like so many other young boys, hardly been reading books at all.<br /> <br /> In a 2015 interview, Kazuo Ishiguro told a reporter from the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/08/books/review/kazuo-ishiguro-by-the-book.html"><i>New York Times</i></a>:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "I was around 9 or 10, and I not only read obsessively about Holmes and Watson, I started to behave like them. I’d go to school and say things like: 'Pray, be seated' or 'That is most singular.' People at the time just put this down to my being Japanese."</blockquote> <br /> Soon after, he began writing his own stories. He had previously created a James Bond type of spy called Mr. Senior, but when he got into Sherlock Holmes in a big way, he started writing a pastiche of a Victorian detective story, beginning with a client arriving and telling a long story. He went to a primary school where they were experimenting with modern teaching methods and there were no defined lessons.<br /> <br /> In "<a href="https://www.theparisreview.org/interviews/5829/kazuo-ishiguro-the-art-of-fiction-no-196-kazuo-ishiguro">The Art of Fiction No. 196</a>" in the <i>Paris Review</i>, Ishiguro said:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "You wrote a bit, then you read each other's things, and you read out loud. […] But a lot of the energy went into decorating our books to look exactly like the paperbacks we saw in the shops, drawing bullet holes on the front and putting quotations from newspapers on the back."</blockquote> <br /> This Sherlock Holmes-inspired primary school writing affected him as a writer later in life as well:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "It was good fun, and it made me think of stories as effortless things. I think that stayed with me. I've never been intimidated by the idea of having to make up a story. It's always been a relatively easy thing that people did in a relaxed environment."</blockquote> <br /> Kazuo Ishiguro's favorite Sherlock Holmes story was – and still is – <i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i>. "It was scary and gave me sleepless nights, but I suspect I was drawn to Conan Doyle’s world because, paradoxically, it was so very cozy", he said in the <i>New York Times</i> interview.<br /> <br /> After his childhood Sherlock Holmes obsession, Kazuo Ishiguro stopped reading – he got interested in pop music instead – until his early twenties. His Holmes interest still exists, however, which he showed in a 2015 conversation with Neil Gaiman, published in the <a href="https://www.newstatesman.com/2015/05/neil-gaiman-kazuo-ishiguro-interview-literature-genre-machines-can-toil-they-can-t-imagine"><i>The New Statesman</i></a>. After some comments made by Gaiman regarding Sherlock Holmes and copyright, Ishiguro said:<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "Since Sherlock Holmes went out of copyright, certainly, he has started to mutate and evolve in a very energetic way. I don’t know if it would have been possible, for instance, to have the Cumberbatch modernised series, had it been under copyright.
