Thinking About Money in the Sherlock Holmes Stories

For North American readers, more specifically: what would the equivalent be in today's US dollars?   <br /><br /><div>How lavish was that £6,000 cheque from the Duke of Holdernesse?   <br /><br />How pricy was that 8d glass of sherry? (Here we get into the messy calculations: twelve pence to a shilling, 20 shillings to a pound, so a pound would buy a round of sherry for 30 people at an expensive hotel.)  <br /><br />How "nicely" could Mary Sutherland get along on the annual income of £100 from her trust fund?  <br /><br /><br /> The obvious way to address this kind of question is a comparison of canonical sums with today's prices, such as the $18 rock bottom price for a glass of port (sherry doesn't seem to be available) at the Palm Court at New York's Plaza Hotel. </div><div><br /></div><div>Unfortunately, no single multiplier seems to work, especially for the luckless researcher who tries to take into account incomes (Mycroft Holmes's "four hundred and fifty pounds a year") as well as prices. It does appear that salaries were low in the Victorian era— but one must remember that hardly anybody paid income tax, and that there were no iPhones, cable packages, sushi or gym memberships to gobble up a modest middle-class income.  <br /><br /> Three or four decades ago, I used that sort of hand-waving calculation to proclaim that £1 in Sherlock Holmes's era had the purchasing power of $100 in modern times. That made the Baker Street Irregulars' daily shilling the equivalent of a $5 bill. </div><div><br /></div><div>Later, as prices kept rising, I amended my rule of thumb to say that the pound was worth $120 ("<a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2018/01/canonical-currency-in-present-day-terms.html#.YVH_u5pKjb0" target="_blank">Canonical Currency in Present-Day Terms</a>"), at the unfortunate cost of complicated mental arithmetic when the subject was, say, Watson's wound pension of eleven shillings and sixpence a day. That would work out to (brings calculator into play) $2,070 a month, not generous but unfortunately plausible.  <br /><br /> Other enthusiasts have done the calculation in other ways, such as converting the 11/6 (or the Duke's £6,000, as the case may be) to US dollars at the traditional rate of $5 to £1, and inflating the result by the 125-year inflation factor of about 3,000 per cent. </div><div><br /></div><div>Alternatively, one could calculate inflation first and transatlantic currency exchange afterwards (the pound is worth about $1.40 US these days). The calculation is a simple one, as Sherlock Holmes mendaciously said in "Silver Blaze."</div><div><br /><br /><h3 style="text-align: left;">A Value Proposition</h3> Recently, however, it struck me that there's another way to look at the matter. After all, the pound, the basic unit of British currency, is tied firmly to the value of precious metals in two different ways.   <br /><br /> First of all, it's the pound sterling. If you go back far enough £1 was the negotiable value of a "Troy pound" (373 grams) of silver. </div><div><br /></div><div>And second, it was in Victorian times almost entirely represented by a gold coin, a "sovereign", that wasn't just worth a pound, it literally was a pound. A sovereign, according to several trustworthy books of reference, contained 123.27 grains, or 7.98 grams, of gold (see also "<a href="https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2016/04/the-curious-incident-of-guinea-coin.html#.YVIAt5pKjb0" target="_blank">The Curious Incident of the Guinea Coin</a>").<br /><br /><br /> The prices of precious metals are volatile these days, to say the least. Over the past two years (which include the COVID-19 era and its severe threats to the world economy), silver has sold for as little as 37 cents per gram, as much as 94 cents. In 2020-21, the wildness has moderated a little, and the average price has been about 80 cents a gram. Multiply the weight by the price, and you'll find that a pound of silver should cost about $298 US.  <br /><br /> Similar calculations work with gold, though Neil Gibson, the Gold King, would be glad to know that the swings are not as extreme. </div><div><br /></div><div>The price per gram has been about $56 a gram over the past two years, in a range from about $47 to $67. Multiply that $56 by the sovereign's weight of just under 8 grams, and you get $447 US as the value of the gold that Irene Adler gave Sherlock Holmes at her wedding.  <br /><br /> Why aren't these numbers the same? Well, that's the effect of "the bimetallic question", that international economic conundrum on which Mycroft Holmes was available to be consulted. </div><div><br /></div><div>But either of the figures, $298 or $447, is a plausible candidate for the "real" value of an 1895 pound in today's American money. Or perhaps, given his background, how the haggis was made.</div><div><br /></div><div>He didn't create the genre of detective fiction, but he did popularize it. Greats such as Edgar Allan Poe and Wilkie Collins preceded him, but Doyle wasn't particularly fond of their heroes' abilities, as told by the authors.</div><div><br /></div><div>In <a href="https://youtu.be/tUjUZ-ASJeI" target="_blank">a 1929 movie reel</a>, he expressed his initial dissatisfaction:</div><div><br /></div><div><blockquote><div>Well, first of all, about the Sherlock Holmes stories. They came about in this way: I was quite a young doctor at the time and I had a course of scientific training, and I used to occasionally to read detective stories, it often annoyed me how in the old-fashioned detective story the detective always seemed to get at his results either by some sort of lucky chance or fluke, or else it was quite unexplained how he got there. He got there but he never gave an explanation to how. Now that didn't seem to me quite playing the game. It seemed to me that he's bound to give his reasons why he came to his conclusions.</div></blockquote><div><br /></div></div><div>So, he set out on a different path. A path that was not only possible but plausible, thanks to Dr. Joseph Bell, a professor at Edinburgh University, who taught Conan Doyle:</div><div><br /></div><div><div></div><blockquote><div>But when I began thinking about this, I began to think of turning scientific methods, as it were, onto the work of detection. And I used, as a student to have an old professor his name was Bell, who was extraordinarily quick at deductive work. He would look at the patient, he would hardly allow the patient to open his mouth but he would make his diagnosis of the disease, and also very often of the patient's nationality and occupation and other points, entirely by his power of observation. So naturally I thought to myself, "well if a scientific man like Bell was to come into the detective business, he wouldn't do these things by chance, he'd get the thing by building it up, scientifically."</div><div><br /></div><div>So, having once conceived that line of thought, you can well imagine that I had as it were, a new idea of the detective and one which it interested me to work out. Of course, William Gillette immortalized both himself and Holmes in his legendary appearances.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">But what about Holmes himself? We know that he had the ability. In <i>The Sign of Four</i>, Inspector Athelney Jones remarked: </div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">"You would have made an actor, and a rare one."</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Perhaps Holmes <i>had </i>been an actor. In "A Scandal in Bohemia," Watson wrote:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">"The stage lost a fine actor, even as science lost an acute reasoner, when he became a specialist in crime."</div></blockquote></div><div><div><br /></div><div>We could take this to mean that Holmes had indeed been employed on the stage at some point.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>We know for certain that Neville St. Clair, "The Man with the Twisted Lip," had been an actor, which made his disguise as Hugh Boone so convincing. This barely noticeable line gives us the origin of his facility with makeup:</div><div><blockquote><div>"I travelled in my youth, took to the stage, and finally became a reporter on an evening paper in London."</div></blockquote></div><div>Sherlock Holmes, a fellow actor, would have seen through this disguise had he met Hugh Boone in person. It was only by eliminating all other possibilities that he came to his conclusion; when he arrives at the Bow Street station, Gladstone bag in hand, that was his first meeting with Boone. </div><div><br /></div><div>Once he is exposed, Holmes lightly scolds St. Claire, saying he should have trusted his wife. When St. Claire breaks down over his children potentially being ashamed of him, we see a very understanding and compassionate response:</div><div><blockquote><div>"Sherlock Holmes sat down beside him on the couch and patted him kindly on the shoulder."</div></blockquote></div><div>We put it to you: does this not seem like the reaction of a fellow thespian? Like the modern-day television actor, he played Sherlock Holmes in over 40 films.</p><p>But you know him as Eille Norwood.</p><p>Most of his Sherlock Holmes films from the 1920s remain hidden from the public, so when the British Film Institute announced a major restoration project, we called Russell Merritt, BSI ("The Trepoff Murder") to enlighten us.</p><p>Russell is a silent film scholar, having recently retired from the University of California, Berkley as a professor of film. He was actively involved in the restoration of other recently discovered silent Sherlock Holmes films such as William Gillette's 1916 <i>Sherlock Holmes</i> and the German <i>Der Hund der Baskervilles</i> from 1929.</p><p>Together, we go behind the scenes of the Norwood films — a drama itself — and cover the Clive Brook film, as well as Russell's Holy Grail of lost Sherlock Holmes films.</p><p>And of course, we have another <b>Canonical Couplet</b> to challenge your acuity. I really do sometimes think that you have powers that are not human.” [ABBE]</div></blockquote></div><div>When Holmes took the effort to explain his reasoning—to a client like Jabez Wilson in "The Red-Headed League," for example—the magic vanished and it approached common sense:</div><div><br /></div><div><blockquote><div>“I thought at first that you had done something clever, but I see that there was nothing in it, after all.”</div></blockquote></div><div><br /></div><div>When it comes to terminology, however, it is interesting to note that Sherlock Holmes himself never refers to his own methods as simply "common sense."</div><div><br /></div><div>Indeed, as we look across the Canon, the term "common sense" is applied—almost universally—as a pejorative when pointing out the official police and their methods.</div><div><br /></div><div>In <i>The Sign of Four</i>, Athleney Jones self-identifies with that thread of thought: </div><div><blockquote><div>“Well, well, if it was fastened the steps could have nothing to do with the matter. That’s common sense. Man might have died in a fit; but then the jewels are missing. Ha! I have a theory. These flashes come upon me at times...Let us apply common sense to the matter.”</div></blockquote></div><div>Ironically, it was Jones who called the master "Mr. Sherlock Holmes the theorist" just a few moments before that statement.</div><div><br /></div><div>Sergeant Wilson of the Sussex Constabulary is with Mrs. Douglas and Cecil Barker at the scene of the crime in <i>The Valley of Fear</i>, his "slow, bucolic common sense was still pondering the open window."</div><div><br /></div><div>Later, Inspector MacDonald can't seem to wrap his head around the facts:</div><div><blockquote><div>“Oh, man, it’s just inconceivable! It’s clean against common sense! I put it to you, Mr. Holmes, judging it by what we have heard.”</div></blockquote></div><div>To the unnamed inspector in "The Three Gables," Sherlock Holmes remarked, "What rugged common sense!"</div><div><br /></div><div>Holmes valued common sense in his own realm, but was hailed for his analytical reasoning. It immortalizes that famous greeting.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“My experience of camp life in Afghanistan” [BOSC]</h3><p>Since Afghanistan is in the news again, we thought it might be worthwhile to reflect on it briefly.</p><p>We're already familiar with that very first greeting. It is the seminal basis of one of the greatest partnerships in literary history. Watson had returned from war, a wounded veteran, looking for a flatmate.</p><p>Holmes's explanation later on gave us a taste of how he arrived at his seemingly magical conclusion:</p><blockquote><p>“I knew you came from Afghanistan. From long habit the train of thoughts ran so swiftly through my mind, that I arrived at the conclusion without being conscious of intermediate steps. There were such steps, however. The train of reasoning ran, ‘Here is a gentleman of a medical type, but with the air of a military man. Clearly an army doctor, then. He has just come from the tropics, for his face is dark, and that is not the natural tint of his skin, for his wrists are fair. He has undergone hardship and sickness, as his haggard face says clearly. His left arm has been injured. He holds it in a stiff and unnatural manner. Where in the tropics could an English army doctor have seen much hardship and got his arm wounded? Clearly in Afghanistan.’ The whole train of thought did not occupy a second. I then remarked that you came from Afghanistan, and you were astonished.”</p></blockquote><p>England was no stranger to war in Afghanistan (nor, indeed, was Afghanistan a stranger to war). There were a number of Anglo-Afghan wars in the span of 100 years, most notably from 1839-1842 and 1878-1880.</p><p>Watson reached his regiment (the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers) safely in Kandahar, before being attached to the Berkshires. It was with this regiment that he received his wound in Maiwand, a small village in Afghanistan.</p><p><i>[Aside: if anyone ever quizzes you on <a href="https://www.sherlockholmespodcast.com/2020/04/episode-172-mystery-of-watsons-second.html" target="_blank">where Watson was wounded</a>, just answer "In Maiwand."]</i></p><p><br />

Indeed, the very first episode, <i>A Study in Pink</i>, was a play on <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>.</p><p>Here we find an army doctor, recently returned from war in—you guessed it, Afghanistan—who was looking to ground himself in London. Over to Bart's (which would figure frequently throughout the series), where he was introduced to Sherlock Holmes whose observations were once again uncannily accurate.</p><p>Lo and behold, the British (and other NATO forces, supporting the United States) were once again engaged in a long-term war in Afghanistan. The narrative fit perfectly with the repetitious nature of military engagements in the country.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">“I endeavored to interest him in Afghanistan” [NAVA]</h3><p>This is not a modern phenomenon, either.</p><p>Alexander the Great arrived in the area of Afghanistan in 330 BCE after defeating Darius III of Persia a year earlier at the Battle of Gaugamela.  His army faced very strong resistance in the Afghan tribal areas where he is said to have commented that Afghanistan is "easy to march into, hard to march out of." (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Afghanistan#Alexander_and_the_Seleucids" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</p><p>For as long as outside forces have been trying to form alliances and cohesiveness in Afghanistan, the internal forces have been fighting and rejecting them.</p><p><br /></p><p>Perhaps we should remember Holmes's words in Chapter 3 of <i>A Study in Scarlet</i>:</p><blockquote><p>“Read it up—you really should. Eliot</a> (Wikimedia Commons - <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/deed.en" target="_blank">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>)</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><br /><div>"Let us go then, you and I," said Sherlock Holmes to his companion, "when the evening is spread out against the sky." <br /><br />No, wait: that wasn't Sherlock, that was Prufrock, the speaker in a poem that continues to intrigue and infuriate, and that is recognized as one of the principal works of Modernism although it's now more than 100 years old.<br /><br /> You may have studied "<a href="https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/poems/44212/the-love-song-of-j-alfred-prufrock" target="_blank">The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock</a>" in high school, and you may remember that its author was T. S. Eliot, who also wrote "Four Quartets," "Murder in the Cathedral," "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," and much more. <div><br /></div><div>Eliot was born in St. Louis in the fall of 1888, during the season of London's Jack the Ripper murders, and (according to some chronologists) simultaneous with the Baskerville hound case on Dartmoor. He moved to London as a young man, turned British, and lived until the early days of 1965, when the musical "Baker Street" was in Boston tryouts before its Broadway run. From the early career of Holmes himself to the first murmurings of the Great Sherlock Holmes Boom a lifetime later, in fact. <br /><br /> Scholars both Sherlockian and academic have repeatedly pointed out connections between the canons of Sherlock and Prufrock, starting at least as far back as a brief item in the journal <i>Notes and Queries</i> in 1948. Vernon S. Goslin wrote in <i>The Sherlock Holmes Journal</i> in 1965, noting Eliot's death, that "Conan Doyle and Eliot share the same poetry of outer London." </div><div><br /></div><div>One issue later, A. D. Henriksen had a full-length article in the <i>SHJ</i> discussing Eliot's own 1928 essay about the Sherlock Holmes tales. (See also "<a href="https://crimereads.com/t-s-eliot-crime-fiction-critic/" target="_blank">T.S. Eliot, Crime Fiction Critic</a>" on CrimeReads)<br /><br /><br /> Your high school teacher, explaining "Prufrock" (or, more ambitiously, "The Waste Land"), probably did not point out that several of Eliot's works contain blatant references to the stories of Sherlock Holmes. </div><div><br /></div><div>The most widely known of these is the verse about Macavity, the Mystery Cat, who bears a strong resemblance to the late Professor James Moriarty, to the point that the musical "Cats," based on Eliot's poems, belongs in a comprehensive Sherlockian collection. "East Coker," the second of the Four Quartets, is notable for turning a canonical place name into a common noun: "On the edge of a grimpen, where is no secure foothold."  <br /><br /> And in "Murder in the Cathedral," a considerable passage from "The Musgrave Ritual" — literally from the questions and answers of the ritual — is quoted in a quite different context, a duel of words between Archbishop Thomas à Becket and the Tempter who is trying his soul. </div><div><br /></div><div>One of the great Sherlockians, Nathan L. Bengis, went to the horse's mouth about these lines, and was able to report in <i>The Baker Street Journal</i> in 1951 that Eliot himself said the borrowing was "deliberate and wholly conscious."</div><div><br /></div><blockquote><div>"Who shall have it? He who will come. What shall be the month? The last from the first. What shall we give for it? Pretence of priestly power." </div></blockquote><div><br /> So what about Prufrock and his love song? </div><div><br /></div><div>There is nothing that blatant, but it is not hard to read the whole 140-line poem as a Sherlockian work — a slightly surrealist pastiche, let's say. Eliot wrote this "love song" in 1910-1911, less than a decade after Sherlock Holmes's apparent retirement from active practice, and exactly contemporary with the publication of such canonical tales as "The Devil's Foot," "The Red Circle," and "Lady Frances Carfax." (It was actually published in 1915.)</div><div><br /> When it speaks of "the yellow fog" and "the soot that falls from chimneys," it is talking about the London that Holmes and Watson knew, and "the smoke that rises from the pipes of lonely men in shirt-sleeves" could be their very smoke.</div><div><br /></div><div>Prufrock, like Holmes, walks through London's "streets that follow like a tedious argument of insidious intent to lead you to an overwhelming question." The reader is not to ask what the question actually is, says Prufrock, but I think we know:</div><div><br />"What did you do with the bodies?"<br /><br /> And when Prufrock speaks of being "formulated, sprawling on a pin… pinned and wriggling on the wall," how can one not think of Peter Carey? Or, indeed, of Jack Stapleton: "A pin, a cork, and a card, and we add him to the Baker Street collection!" </div><div><br /></div><div>Many other lines in the poem have canonical connections, and the narrative of an aging, insecure man wishing but not daring to present himself as a lover might have an echo here and there. "There will be time," says Prufrock,</div><div><blockquote>          there will be time<br />          To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet;<br />          There will be time to murder and create. </blockquote><br />And it seems clear that what Eliot created more than a hundred years ago came in part from Sherlock Holmes.  </div><div><br /></div><div>--</div><div><br /></div><br /></div>
