When it converges with the world of Sherlock Holmes, it becomes all the more interesting.</p><p>Joshua Harvey lives at that convergence and has some wonderful stories to tell about his history with music, with Sherlock Holmes, and with Patrick Gowers, the composer of the score of the Granada/ITV Sherlock Holmes series.</p><p>In addition to his work with Gowers' material, Josh threw himself into a Canonical composing fit during the pandemic, writing theme songs for a variety of Sherlockian societies (aka "scions") that met both online and in person. We have samples of his work that may give other societies ideas about future commissions.</p><p>There's a BIG surprise with regard to the <b>Canonical Couplet</b> quiz — one that you won't want to miss. Baker Street Elementary – A Generous Spirit

He was, as he said, "the only one in the world," [STUD] and because of those special powers, he had every reason to believe he would remain unique.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And yet, we find him again and again, demonstrating his willingness to share his secrets in an effort to advance the profession. He was more than willing to make it clear how he knew the things he knew.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Consider the times he recommended to Watson his monographs. In <i>The Sign of Four,</i> he mentioned his monograph <i>Upon the Distinction between the Ashes of the Various Tobaccoes</i>, following it up with others: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">"Here is my monograph upon the tracing of footsteps, with some remarks upon the uses of plaster of Paris as a preserver of impresses. Here, too, is a curious little work upon the influence of a trade upon the form of the hand, with lithotypes of the hands of slaters, sailors, corkcutters, compositors, weavers, and diamond-polishers. In "The Abbey Grange," Watson was hurt by Sherlock Holmes's criticism over his dramatization of certain cases. He asked Holmes with some bitterness, "Why do you not write them yourself?" The reply made it clear:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I will, my dear Watson, I will. At present I am, as you know, fairly busy, but I propose to devote my declining years to the composition of a text-book which shall focus the whole art of detection into one volume. Our present research appears to be a case of murder.”</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">True experts are not afraid to be generous with their time and knowledge, for they appreciate seeing their industries advance. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">At the same time, they know how much diligence and hard work go into being at the top of their field. Since that time, the detective has been portrayed hundreds of times on the screen.</div><div><br /></div><div>And in recent years, there have been several female incarnations of Sherlock Holmes and/or Dr. Watson. Let's track how we got here and take a deeper look at one particular series.</div> <div><br /></div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">They Might Be Giants</h3>It began as far back as 1971 in <i><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067848/" target="_blank">They Might Be Giants</a></i>, when George C. Scott played Justin Playfair, a judge who retreats into fantasy and thinks he is Sherlock Holmes after his wife's death. When attempts are made to institutionalize him, he catches the attention of Dr. Mildred Watson, a psychiatrist. <div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rSD5yKu27es" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></div><div><br /> <br /><br /><h3 style="text-align: left;">Elementary</h3></div><div>In September of 2012, CBS aired <i><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2191671/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1" target="_blank">Elementary</a></i>, a modern interpretation with a female Dr. Joan Watson played by Lucy Liu. It is set in New York City. Dr. Watson had been a surgeon but was never in the military. In this, Holmes is portrayed by Jonny Lee Miller as a petulant and obnoxious post-rehab drug addict. Aiden Quinn is dependable as Captain Thomas Gregson.  <br /> <br /><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ff-XiZzJLxw" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /></div><br />James O'Leary, BSI ("James, Son of the Grimpen Postmaster") spoke was interviewed about <i>Elementary</i> on <a href="https://ihose.co/ihose150" target="_blank">Episode 150 of IHOSE</a>.<br /><br /></div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">221B</h3><div> In July 2013, the <a href="https://youtu.be/tcby_Fc1yko" target="_blank"><i>221B</i></a> web series premiered. It is a period setting with a female Sherlock Holmes. This was an interesting take with a female Holmes and a male Watson sharing digs at 221B. While not a big-budget production,  the series was interesting, intelligent and done with care.<div>   <br /><center><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tcby_Fc1yko" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></center> <br /><br /> <br /><h3 style="text-align: left;">Herlock</h3> Around 2015, the <i><a href="http://herlock.us/" target="_blank">Herlock</a> </i>web series went  for broke with a modern interpretation using females for both lead characters. In this incarnation, Watson is a veterinary student.</div><div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KKm2maRCpLc" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div><br /> <br /><i> Herlock </i>was written by Lee Eric Shackleford, BSI ("Woodman's Lee"), a guest on <a href="https://ihose.co/ihose152" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Episode 152 of IHOSE</a>.<br /> <br /> <br /> <h3 style="text-align: left;">Miss Sherlock</h3> Then, in 2019, I came across another incarnation of the Master and the Boswell that was part of an HBO subscription.  This program, <i><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7755494/" target="_blank">Miss Sherlock</a></i>, was created in 2018 and with it came with a female Sherlock and a female Dr. Wato-san, set in modern-day Tokyo. <br /><br /><center><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/V0FIUz5OpT4" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></center> <br /> <br /> <br /> Unless you speak Japanese, you might need a bigger screen to read the subtitles. The subtitles will not concern you because your eyes will already be riveted to the screen. Smart scripts and clean direction keep the action moving.  <br /> <br /> <br /> You will recognize the stories, but just as you recognize one and think about the original tale, it will unfold in unexpected ways. The writing is very good, the visual impact of every scene is so well done.  <br /> <br /> <br /> Sherlock and Wato-san rent an apartment from Kimi Hatano, in a house that looks like a Victorian throwback in the midst of a Tokyo neighborhood. Their digs are cluttered with what you would expect from Sherlock. All of the places and homes they visit are the expected minimalist, which provides a stark contrast. There are chemical experiments there too, but one of the results is a cucumber-based beauty cream.  <br /> <br /> <br /> Sara "Sherlock" Shelly Futaba is every bit the genius detective, playing the most intense version of the Master. She is a fashionista, solving each crime in catwalk-ready but practical outfits and chasing down leads in stiletto heels. She is ruthless and unfeeling in her pursuit of the truth. Her instrument is the cello, which she plays flawlessly. The dressing gown has been replaced by delightful pajamas. She is superbly played by Yūko Takeuchi. <br /><br /> Dr. Wato ("Wato-san") has been a surgeon in Syria with PTSD who is now trying to find herself and romance. Sherlock is completely offended by her sense of fashion. She is definitely the long-suffering type, well portrayed by Shihori Kanjiya. <br /><br /> This version of the landlady is Kimi Hatano who is played by Ran Ito. Wato-san cooks traditional meals in her kitchen. She adds a lot to the ladies' lives, and is involved more than Mrs. Hudson was in the Canon. <br /><br /> Season 1 of <i>Miss Sherlock</i> contains 8 episodes. During the season we see their relationship evolve as their partnership grows. However, both are still insisting they are not friends.</div><div>  <br />The style of these episodes, and the stories, compare favorably to BBC's <i>Sherlock</i>. Although it is hard to do a side-by-side comparison,  I found <i>Miss Sherlock</i> to be more riveting, with better stories, and less impressed with itself.  <br /> <br /> <br /> Familiar characters abound, with their own modern and Japanese take. Among them, you will meet irresistible versions of Mycroft and Lestrade. It's like the familiar faces Dorothy saw when she woke up after the tornado in the scene from "The Wizard of Oz". They all seem so well cast, and make you happy to recognize them. As with the plots, there will be twists in the lineup.</div><div>  <br />When you can, give this smart, great, modern interpretation of Sherlock Holmes and his <br /> world a try. Unless you speak Japanese, be sure to watch when you can focus on the screen. <br /><br /> The English subtitles of this Japanese program remind of a story from the attempts at language translation during the Cold War, which may be apocryphal. Scientists had a computer translate "the spirit was willing, but the flesh was weak” to Russian, then translated the result from Russian back to English to the phrase “the vodka was good, but the meat was rotten.” </div><div><br /></div><div>In the case of <i>Miss Sherlock</i>, the results are astonishingly good. "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" translates to Japanese and back as "Eliminate the impossible…and you are left with the unlikely truth".  <br /><br /></div><div> As of this writing, HBO has not responded to my question about Season 2 of <i>Miss Sherlock</i>. Even if there were one planned, it would have to be recast, due to the untimely death of Yûko Takeuchi, who played Sherlock, in September 2020.<br /><br /></div><div><i>Miss Sherlock</i> is available on HBO Max, HBO Asia, and Hulu Japan. Here's what member Ro had to say after playing the demo version: </p><p></p><blockquote><p>Frogwares, the studio behind all the best Sherlock Holmes video games, gave access to their demo of <i>Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened</i> game remake to certain tier <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/frogwares/sherlock-holmes-the-awakened" target="_blank">Kickstarter</a> backers last week. I spent some time playing through it on regular and master difficulties and I can say I’m pretty impressed. </p><p>It’s a huge step up from the original and builds on what the devs have been improving over the years on all their Sherlock Holmes games! The most obvious evidence of this is the opiate drug named for him: morphine, administered to relieve pain and induce calmness.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">When slumber—that most peaceful of activities—is interrupted and we're forced to leave the warm embrace of such a warm and comfortable cotton cocoon, the effect is jarring. Disruptive. Perhaps even violent. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Consider a handful of sleep-interrupting moments in the Sherlock Holmes stories.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "<b>The Speckled Band</b>," the story opens with Watson being roused from sleep:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I woke one morning to find Sherlock Holmes standing, fully dressed, by the side of my bed. He was a late riser, as a rule, and as the clock on the mantelpiece showed me that it was only a quarter-past seven, I blinked up at him in some surprise, and perhaps just a little resentment, for I was myself regular in my habits.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Very sorry to knock you up, Watson,” said he, “but it’s the common lot this morning. Mrs. Hudson as been knocked up, she retorted upon me, and I on you.”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In that very same story, we hear of Julia Stoner being woken up in the dead of night:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Because during the last few nights I have always, about three in the morning, heard a low, clear whistle. I am a light sleeper, and it has awakened me.”</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Of course, Watson is the victim once again in "<b>The Abbey Grange</b>," but all is forgiven, because Holmes utters one of his most iconic phrases:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It was on a bitterly cold and frosty morning during the winter of ’97 that I was awakened  by a tugging at my shoulder. It was Holmes. The candle in his hand shone upon his eager, stooping face and told me at a glance that something was amiss.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Come, Watson, come!” he cried. “The game is afoot. Not a word! Into your clothes and come!”</div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Recall that Heidegger, the German master in "<b>The Priory School</b>" was roused from bed: “His bed had also been slept in; but he had apparently gone away partly dressed...”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">In "The Beryl Coronet," Alexander Holder was on edge from bringing the precious item home with him. In this state of anxiety, he left the confines of his bed:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“I am not a very heavy sleeper, and the anxiety in my mind tended, no doubt, to make me even less so than usual. About two in the morning, then, I was awakened by some sound in the house...I slipped out of bed, all palpitating with fear, and peeped round the corner of my dressing-room door.”</div></blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Other instances involving beds and bedding include Professor Coram, from "<b>The Golden Pince-Nez</b>," described as “an invalid, keeping his bed half the time,” whom Holmes and Watson found him in it, “propped up with pillows.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Beryl Stapleton was found at Merripit House in <b><i>The Hound of the Baskervilles</i></b>, “tied to a post swathed and muffled in the sheets which had been used to secure it.”</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And who can forget Sherlock Holmes himself, bedridden and seemingly mortally ill in "<b>The Dying Detective</b>"? The bed gave Watson refuge when Culverton Smith paid Holmes a visit. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">There are many other instances of things that go bump in the night in the Canon, but it's almost time for lights out at Baker Street Elementary, and the boys seem hesitant to enjoy the comfort their sheets should bring...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; It has a price tag of £96,000 and is on view at his gallery at the Bluebird Garage in Chelsea, London."</p></blockquote><p>To be clear, <i>ATG</i> stated that this was Conan Doyle's design, rather than his own desk: </p><blockquote><p>"Only seven were made and two of these are owned by Goyard. One is in a French museum, three are in private collections (including this from Oulton). The whereabouts of the seventh is unknown."</p></blockquote><p><br /></p><p>Now we've discovered that one of these (ostensibly one of the three from a private collection) is <a href="https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/more-furniture-collectibles/home-accents/trunks-luggage/extremely-rare-20th-century-arthur-conan-doyle-goyard-desk-trunk/id-f_23571432/" target="_blank">available for sale on 1stDibs</a> from a seller in Hong Kong.</p><p>Below are images provided by the seller (click to enlarge).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both;
